In 1998, a group of friends was making soup together when inspiration struck: they wondered if they could turn their vegetables into musical instruments. The idea started as a joke, but they decided to test it out since they were signed up to perform at an upcoming music festival. That’s when the Vegetable Orchestra was born. In the 25 years since, the group has used fresh carrots, pumpkins, and other vegetables to create around 100 instruments, release four albums, and perform more than 300 concerts all over the world.
Not all vegetables are suitable for music; they need to be fresh enough to handle drilling and shaping and the right size and shape to produce the required sound. The most challenging part is preparing for each performance, as the musicians have to constantly make new instruments. Fresh vegetables only last a few hours after being cut and handled. Therefore, for each city on their tour, they need to buy fresh vegetables that look and sound interesting in local markets. They then use drills (钻头), knives, and other kitchen tools to turn the vegetables into violins, flutes, and other instruments.
Over the decades, the Vegetable Orchestra’s performance style has changed significantly. Even though the carrot flute and leek violin that appeared at the first concert remain dependable parts of the collection, the way the orchestra approaches them has matured and transformed over the years. “In the early days, we were trying to make the vegetables fit our musical compositions; now, it tends to be the other way around,” explains Ingrid Schlögl, a classically trained musician and singer who joined the orchestra in 2004. “We are developing towards exploring the music of the vegetables and digging deeper into this element.”
Today, the group engages in a variety of musical styles — from free jazz to experimental electronic. Each member builds their own instruments and develops their specialties over time. They create their musical compositions through an intensely collaborative process and have developed their own system of musical notation (音乐符号). They have no leader and perform without a conductor, relying on body language to communicate during performances. “We are such individual people, but when we are on stage, we are like one body,” says Schlögl.
4. What inspires the formation of the Vegetable Orchestra?
A. A cooking experience. B. A joke about soup.
C. A music festival. D. A performer’s suggestion.
5 What is the most challenging part for the group of musicians?
A. Finding suitable vegetables.
B. Making vegetables sound interesting.
C. Creating new instruments for each show.
D. Keeping vegetables fresh during their tours.
6. What does Ingrid Schlögl reveal about their current performances?
A. They are experimenting with more types of vegetables.
B. They are exploring the musical potential of vegetables.
C. They are trying to perform classical music with vegetables.
D. They are improving the appearance of vegetable instruments.
7. Which of the following words can best describe the group?
A. Disciplined and talented. B. Thoughtful and humorous.
C. Ambitious and conservative. D. Cooperative and innovative.

How do you read? Some people only read dialogue, while others might skip long sections of text or only read the first and last sentences in a paragraph. Others say they read each word and revisit the same section two or three times to ensure that they don’t miss anything.
The digital age has had a significant impact on how we read. Surveys show that Americans read fewer books per year than 30 years ago. Although the rise of social media communities has increased book sales over the last few years, the average American spends about 26 minutes reading per day, compared to three hours on the Internet or watching TV.
Nowadays, we spend more time skimming (略读) and scanning rather than close reading. Some experts worry about the loss of our ability to slow down and read deeply. So, is there a “right” way to read?
Skimming is a common strategy that involves skipping over words and sections to grasp the main idea. According to Daniel Willingham, a psychologist at the University of Virginia, skimming is fine as long as it doesn’t affect understanding. That is sufficient for most beach reads. For example, they don’t require us to recall details of a scene or deal with many complex words. Familiarity with the text type also influences reading strategies. Those who read a lot of mystery novels can skip sections while still understanding the plot.
Experts often contrast skimming with “close” reading. Close reading requires greater focus and is typically more time-intensive, making it challenging to maintain attention. When readers engage in close reading, they actively analyze and interpret the text, make connections, and critically evaluate the information presented. This level of cognitive (认知的) processing is believed to activate various regions of the brain involved in comprehension, memory, and problem-solving, leading to a more extensive and integrated neural (神经的) response.
In today’s fast-paced digital world, balancing between skimming for efficiency and close reading for depth can improve our reading experience and learning abilities.
8. What do surveys show about Americans?
A. They tend to skim long articles. B. They spend less time on reading.
C. They read texts with high efficiency. D. They prefer e-books to printed books.
9. In which situation is skimming most suitable?
A. Preparing for an academic exam. B. Reading a light novel for pleasure.
C. Recalling a key scene of beach reads. D. Understanding the plot of a mystery story.
10. How does close reading differ from skimming reading?
A. It requires quickly scanning the text. B. It aims at memorizing specific details.
C It involves multiple recognitive activities. D. It helps improve readers’ attention quickly.
11. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To discuss different ways of reading. B. To stress the benefits of close reading.
C. To encourage people to read more books. D. To show the change in people’s reading habits.
D
From an airplane, cars moving slowly down the highway look like ants. But unlike cars, actual ants somehow manage to avoid stop-and-go traffic. Researchers are now studying these insects’ cooperative strategies to learn how to program self-driving cars that don’t jam up.
The previous research by Katsuhiro Nishinari, a mathematical physicist at the University of Tokyo, had shown that foraging (觅食的) ants can maintain their flow even when it’s very crowded. So what’s their secret? In a recent study, researchers recorded Ochetellus ants on foraging paths and used traffic-engineering models to analyze their movement. They found that the ants don’t jam because they travel in groups of three to twenty that move at nearly constant rates while keeping good distances between one another — and they don’t speed up to pass others.
Human drivers at rush hour are hardly likely to follow such rules. “We’re maximizing the interest of individuals, which is why at a given point you start to have a traffic jam,” says study co-author Nicola Pugno, who studies solid mechanics at the University of Trento in Italy. However, self-driving cars could have more cooperative programming if they one day become widespread. In one vision of this future, autonomous vehicles would share information with nearby cars to enhance traffic flow by prioritizing (优先考虑) constant speeds and time intervals or by not passing others on the road. This vehicle network would be similar to ants on a path, which use scent to coordinate behavior while interacting with one another.
However, today’s drivers can learn at least one thing from ants to avoid causing a traffic jam: don’t tailgate. By leaving room between their car and the one ahead of them, drivers can prevent small slowdowns from turning into big traffic jams. Maintaining a steady speed rather than frequent speed-up and braking (刹车) can also help reduce the likelihood of traffic jams, making the journey smoother and safer for everyone on the road.
12. Why do ants never get caught in traffic jams?
A. They are small and travel slowly. B. They have a special sense of direction.
C. They always move in a similar foraging path. D. They keep a steady speed and a suitable distance.
13. How might self-driving cars reduce traffic jams?
A. By adjusting routes in real time. B. By moving along the dedicated lanes.
C. By sharing data with surrounding vehicles. D. By monitoring road conditions with sensors.
14. What does the underlined word “tailgate” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A Brake suddenly. B. Follow closely. C. Drive quickly. D. Turn sharply.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Reasons for Modern Traffic Jams B. Methods to Manage Traffic Flow
C. Ant-Inspired Solutions for Smoother Traffic D. Interaction-Based Traffic Systems on City Roads

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Preparation for a music festival doesn’t have to take a lot of time. ___16___ It’s actually as easy as having a rough plan for transportation schedule. And, of course, you always need to check over the festival rules to make sure you’re planning for any restrictions you may encounter. Here are my tips for music festivals:
Bring sun protection. It was hot and outside. I usually forget to put on sunscreen, but this time I did. ___17___ In general, getting burned will make your experience a lot more painful, so it’s a good idea to set a reminder for yourself to bring sun protection to a music festival.
___18___ It was cheap, and stress-free. I highly recommend getting to your music festival by public transit if it’s available. Sometimes, cars and ride-shares just aren’t worth the headache or price. But remember to always check the transit schedule so you don’t have to wait too long!
Have a designated (指定的) meeting spot and time. I think that this is a music festival must. If you’re meeting friends at the venue, have a dedicated place and time for when you’re meeting up. ___19___
Read the rules. ___20___ But right before I left, I checked the festival rules and realized that my type of camera wasn’t allowed in! Generally, if there’s anything you don’t want to get confiscated (没收) at the festival entrance, check the rules to make sure it’s allowed in before you bring it.
A. Wear strong shoes.
B. Use public transportation.
C. Bring a portable phone charger.
D. I also brought sunglasses and a hat to stay cool.
E. And it certainly shouldn’t add extra stress to your life.
F. I like using my camera for photos and was excited to record the festival.
G. If you get separated, have a place that you know you can go to find each other.

Growing up I wanted to be just like my mom. She was kind and caring, and always made people comfortable in her presence. For years she was a volunteer in our community. I love going to the local nursing home to help with her when I was a child. However, once I became a teenager, I was too caught up in my adolescent world to worry about helping others.
One particular summer day when I was 12, Mom came into my room and told me to get up and meet her at the car. But I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything? At last, I made my way outside with my mother. Angry and annoyed, I climbed into the car and shoot the door loudly. I sat in silence, too upset to talk. “Tasha, do you know where we are going?” Mom asked calmly. I remained silent. “Sweetheart, we’re going to the children’s shelter. I have been there before and I think it would benefit you,” she explained.
I feel a pain slowly form in my stomach. How was I supposed to help there?
When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. As we approached the front door, wind bells played a calming tune while trees and flowers welcomed us. Maybe this wasn’t going to be so.
Mom rang the doorbell. We were led to the front room, where all of the children were playing. Toys were spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby whose body was seriously wounded. Most of the children had noticeable physical scars such as cuts, burns and scratches. What a terrible life they must had had before they moved here! My heart sank. As I was looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt.

C. It involves multiple recognitive activities. D. It helps improve readers’ attention quickly.
11. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To discuss different ways of reading. B. To stress the benefits of close reading.
C. To encourage people to read more books. D. To show the change in people’s reading habits.
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. C 11. A

A. Brake suddenly. B. Follow closely. C. Drive quickly. D. Turn sharply.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Reasons for Modern Traffic Jams B. Methods to Manage Traffic Flow
C. Ant-Inspired Solutions for Smoother Traffic D. Interaction-Based Traffic Systems on City Roads
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. C

【答案】One possible version:
Getting to Know the Intangible Cultural Heritage Around Us
Last weekend, our school’s Student Union organized the “Intangible Cultural Heritage on Campus” event, bringing fascinating traditional arts to students.
For three hours, master artisans showcased traditional skills ranging from delicate paper-cutting to rhythmic dough sculpture shaping. We learned the history of shadow puppetry through a live performance and practiced basic ink brush techniques in calligraphy workshops. The interactive displays allowed us to touch, create, and ask questions directly to inheritors of these disappearing arts.
The event was eye-opening. Not only did we appreciate the beauty of these ancient arts, but we also understood their cultural significance. It made me realize that protecting intangible heritage is everyone’s duty — a bridge connecting past and future.

Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom.

【答案】One possible version:
I looked down to see a little girl with brown eyes looking up at me. Her angelic face lighted, although there were some scars on her little arms. “Hi. I’m Ashley. Do you want to play dolls with me?” she asked. I looked over and saw Mom nodding to me with a smile. I bent toward Ashley and whispered, “Sure. I’d love to.” Her tiny hand reached up and took mine, and we walked toward the doll house. Our time together brought her great joy and fun and she also made my day.
I returned to the sheer with Mom several times. During those visits, some of the children including Ashley shared their troubled pasts with me in great detail. I felt sorry for what had happened to them and treasured the friendship between us. I would like to do everything in my power to help the children there. At the same time, I learned to be grateful for all that I had. It was a meaningful time in my young life that I will never forget. It was Mom who taught me the valuable lesson that summer.
