When she was 14 years old, Remya Jose’s life was turned upside down by a family crisis(危
机).
Remya, who lived in a small village in India, learned that her mother was ill and her father
would have to spend his time caring for her. As a result, she and her twin sister had to do most of
the housework— including washing clothes. To make things even more difficult, the Jose family
couldn’t afford an electric washing machine. Instead, the two girls would have to do the washing
all by hand in the local river, and then carefully carry everything back to their home—a task that
took several hours.
Being a good student interested in engineering, Remya wanted to make a washing machine
which could be used without electricity. She started studying electric washers to learn how they
worked. Remya then designed(设计) a machine that used bicycle pedals(踏板) and chain. To find
those items, she and her father went to a local auto shop. Workers there not only gave her the parts,
they helped her make the machine!
Here’s how the machine works: Remya used a cylinder(圆桶) to hold the clothes and put it in
a cube(立方体). Next, she connected the bicycle pedals and the chain to the cylinder. As Remya
pushed the pedals with her legs, the cylinder cleaned the clothes just like a regular washing
machine.
Remya’s invention worked! She had created her own human-powered washing machine—
and now a task that used to take several hours took only 30 minutes. Remya’s washing machine
was chosen from among 25,000 entries(参赛作品 ) as India’s best innovation! She was given
India’s National Award and honored by the nation’s former president.
The story of this young woman’s creative invention spread around the world.

DID YOUR FAMILY moved before? How did you adjust to life in a new place? Nowadays,
scientists helped some Burrowing Owls settle(安置) into their new homes.
Burrowing owls are small brown long-legged birds. They make homes in underground
burrows(洞穴) and prefer to live in groups. In California, U.S.A., there is another kind of owls
called the Western Burrowing Owl.
In the past, these owls lived in the grasslands. Later, people began building cities on many of
the grasslands. This drove the owls off their burrows. Some of these birds were unable to find new
homes. As a result, the number of Western Burrowing Owls in California was fewer than that in
1965. If the number keeps falling, they will be at risk of dying out.
Luckily, scientists found out the problem some years ago. They soon began trying to move
these owls to some protected grasslands. In order to make the birds feel more “at home”, scientists
played the recording sound of owl calls in these areas. They also used white paint to make fake
droppings(假粪便) of the owls. This made the birds believe that other owls were living there. As a
result, they accepted their new home and stayed there.
Scientists returned to check on the owls. Most of them seemed to like their new homes. Good
luck to them enjoying their new lives there!
63.What can we know about Burrowing Owls according to Paragraph 2?
A. They like living in groups. B. They only stay in California.

65.What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Playing the recording. B. Painting owls white.
C. Making fake droppings. D. Recording the sound of owl.
66.What can we probably infer from the passage?
A. People won’t build their cities on the grassland.
B. Scientists won’t find ways to protect these owls.
C. Burrowing Owls will die out in the near future.
D. More Burrowing Owls will live in new homes.
67.Which of the following can be the best title?
A. Burrowing Owls.
B. People and Nature.

A smile shows that a person is happy. For example, a person may smile when he or she is
happy with a grade on a test. Or a person might smile if a friend told a funny joke. People smile
for many different reasons. But smiles are more than just a way for people to show that they are
happy. There are other good reasons to smile often.
First, it is easier to smile than to show unhappiness. In fact, it only takes 17 muscles(肌肉) to
smile. On the other hand, it takes 43 muscles to show unhappiness. So give the muscles in your
face a rest and smile!
Second, smiles are nice. People may try to look nice on the outside by exercising or wearing
nice clothes. However, there is a famous saying: . That is because it is easy to be around
someone who is smiling and happy. Almost no one wants to be around someone who is unhappy
all the time.
Third, smiles are helpful. Both smiling and laughing can quickly spread from one person to
another. If one person smiles, people around him or her want to smile, too. Similarly, when a
person laughs, people tend to laugh with them. If a person is sad, the best thing to do is to share a
smile or laugh. It is the easiest and cheapest way to cheer someone up.
Finally, smiling and laughing are very good for the body. Even if you are mad or sad, try
smiling. You’ll find that it will be hard to stay mad or sad for very long.
68. In what situation does a smile show that a person is happy?
A. When he makes 43 muscles on the face work together.

Great Inventions of ancient China. But have you heard of another important invention—the
abacus(算盘)?
It’s said that Li Shou(隶首 ) invented the abacus. 73 Some researchers believe the
abacus has a longer history than the other calculators(计算器) in the world. In China, people used
abacuses to do calculations for thousands of years before people use electronic calculators in daily
lives.
74 It has many beads(珠子 ). Each bead above the abacus stands for five, and each
bead below stands for one. By moving the beads up or down, one can do all kinds of calculations.
It is a joy to watch a skilled hand use an abacus. Fingers move, beads knock, and after a few
seconds, the result comes out. 75 So it was taught in many schools. Wherever there was a
need for calculations, an abacus would come into sight.
Today, because we are used to using electronic calculators, we don’t have many chances to
see an abacus in our daily lives. 76 However, the abacus still plays an important role in
certain situations.
The abacus is one of the important inventions in Chinese history. It used to make a big
difference to Chinese people’s lives. 77 It is our national treasure. It is one of the reasons
why we are proud of China.
A. The abacus is usually made of wood.
B. It has been around for over 5,000 years.
C. More and more people are using abacuses nowadays.
D. In the past, the use of the abacus was a necessary skill.
E. So the abacus is a symbol of wealth for traders in China.
F. It shows the great wisdom of the ancient Chinese people.
G. Many young people have not even heard of the word “abacus”.

A smile is the most beautiful language of human beings. A smile shows you are kind and
friendly. It helps you get on well with others. It also brings good luck and makes others feel warm.
When I was in Grade 8, a new student came to our class. He did badly in schoolwork. No one
talked with him. He felt very lonely.
When I learnt this, each time I met him, I gave him a big smile. Afterwards, he often asked
me questions about study. We became good friends and he did better and better in his study. He
said that it was my smile that made him more confident and outgoing. Smiles are so important in
our life, so let’s try to smile more.
If we smile at life, life will smile back.
