“Eco-mermaid” Merle Liivand broke her own world record for swimming with a single
fin(鳍) on May 7, 2022. She even picked rubbish out of the water as she swam.
Ms Liivand was born in Estonia. As a child, she had health problems, and began swimming
to make herself stronger. She was soon taking part in open water swimming competitions,
sometimes even in cold water.
Years ago, Ms Liivand moved to Miami, Florida, where she went swimming in the sea. In
one training class, she nearly swallowed(吞) some plastic on the sea. It made her think of the sea
animals that faced similar problems every day. She decided to work to make people know more
about plastic pollution, which she called a “plastic pandemic”.
Thinking about sea animals gave her the idea of swimming like one. She began swimming
with a special single swimming fin with both of her feet in it. This rubbery fin allowed her to
swim by kicking both of her legs together.
“Swimming with the rubbery fin without using my arms is similar to how dolphins and other
sea animals swim,” said Ms Liivand. She believed that swimming with a rubbery fin “sent a
bigger message”.
The water was rough, and she ran into a few problems, but she didn’t stop. To keep her
energy up, a friend followed her in a kayak(皮划艇) and gave her food and water from time to
time. Along the way, Ms Liivand picked up all the rubbish she found and put it in the kayak. By
the end of her marathon, the kayak had held three bags full of rubbish.

In many countries, you must make your drone legal(合法) before you put it in the sky. Some
countries also require drone owners to get third-party liability insurance(安全责任险 ). Even
drones are prevented from flying in city areas to protect the right to privacy(隐私 ), and from
entering “no-fly” areas, such as airports and government buildings. If a drone has been illegally
checked to enter a no-fly area, it could be shot down by the government.
Today, drones play an important role in the war. As well as being used for watching, army
drones have also been used to strike others or drop food and medical supplies. Along with cameras
and sensors(传感器) that can feel body heat, search-and-save drones help locate missing people
and animals. They’re used in hard-to-reach areas such as a thick forest, and can even search under
rubble. Researchers are using them to watch endangered living things. Besides, drones can also
help reforest areas destroyed by wildfires; tree seeds(种子) can be dropped across landscape that’s
too dangerous for humans to arrive. They can help humans in other ways, too. For example,
drones can be a more environmentally friendly delivery method. Maybe one day they send your
online order to your door.
Army drones cost more than £12 million, but mini drones cost as little as £30. Most drones
are operated by either a controller or a smartphone app, but some models can either turn around
and go back to the user, or land by themselves with the help of GPS, sensors and software as well
as cameras that help them avoid running into things. Perhaps one day we’ll take one to work and
fly over rush-hour traffic without needing a pilot’s licence.
63.Why are the drones prevented from flying in city areas?
A. City areas are “no-fly” areas.
B. The owners of drones are illegal.
C. The drones have no third-party liability insurance.
D. People have rights to protect personal information.
64.What can we learn about the drones from Paragraph 2? Check and choose the right answer.
①Search-and-save drones can help to strike others.
②Missing people and animals can be located by some drones.
③Researchers watch the endangered living things with drones.
④Drones can reach some places that are too dangerous to arrive.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
65.What does the underlined word “delivery” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Send B. Watch. C. Search. D. Explore.
66. How can drones avoid running into things?
A. Use GPS, sensors, software and cameras.
B. Use GPS, sensors, cameras and a controller.
C. Use sensors, a controller and some software.
D. Use sensors, a controller and a smartphone app.
67.What can we get according to the text?
A. It’s free to fly your drones in the sky.
7
B. Drones can be used to carry things to people in trouble.
C. We can use drones to cut down the trees in the thick forest.
D. Mini drones are much more expensive than army drones.
D
Water is important for all living things on Earth. The water cycle is a natural process that
takes water from the ground and the sky and brings it back to the earth again. It is a cycle that
happens the whole year and is most active from March to May in China. In this article, we will
explore the water cycle and discuss its importance for Earth.
The water cycle always begins with water vapour(蒸汽). When it’s hot outside, you can see
clouds forming in the sky. These clouds are made of water vapour that comes from the ground,
plants and rivers. As water vapour rises into the sky, it cools down and becomes clouds. After that,
clouds travel through the sky and fall back to Earth as rain or snow. Then, water runs through
rivers and oceans and finally returns to the earth again in different forms like rainwater or snow.
The water cycle plays an important role in protecting our Earth’s climate. It provides us with
water to drink and keeps our climate healthy. On top of that, it takes water from rivers and oceans
and brings it to the areas that don’t have enough water. Without the cycle, we would face many
problems. When there is too much water in one place, it becomes a flood. When water is badly in
need, it becomes a drought(旱灾). Besides, water vapour can take heat from the sun and keep our
planet cool. The water cycle is a natural process that keeps our planet alive. It’s important for
plants and animals to drink water and for our rivers to stay flowing with water.
Understanding the water cycle can help us enjoy the beauty of nature, know how our planet
works and develop better methods to protect our Earth. And that is a responsibility(责任 ) we
should take on.
68.Which season might have the most active water cycle in China?

China is the hometown of kites. Making and flying kites is one of the ancient Chinese folk
skills. Kites are also an important part of Chinese culture.
Kites were invented by the Chinese during the Spring and Autumn Period, having a history of
over 2,000 years. It is said that Mozi, an ancient Chinese thinker, made a wood bird after the work
of three years. This might be the earliest kite in human history. 73 Some folk custom experts
said that ancestors(祖先 ) invented kites mainly to memorize their family members and friends.
74 They hope that their sadness can be passed to the dead through the kites. In the Northern
and Southern Dynasties, kites began to be used for the purpose of sending messages. Since the
Sui-Tang Period, paper has been used to make kites because of paper making. 75
According to research, kites spread to Korea in the tenth century and then to Japan. 76
It was said the time when it spread to Europe was the thirteenth or fourteenth century.
77 The controlling string(绳 ) and the pulling force are decided by the size and the
shape of the kites, the environment and the wind. Right wind often blows in spring, making it the
perfect season for flying kites. If we want to play for fun, flying kites should avoid cloudy days,
and rainy days. Safety is also important. Flying kites should be done on an open ground and it is
not wise to fly kites in dangerous places such as the water side and tops of buildings.
A. Flying kites needs skills.
B. Kites are popular all over the world.
C. But they weren’t spread to Europe at that time.
D. So at the Qingming Festival people would make and fly kites.

Dear teachers and fellow students,
A good environment can make everyone feel happy and everyone has a duty to protect the
environment. So how can we help protect it? Here are some ways.
First, we can stop using cars. We can go to school or work on foot or by bus. It not only can
protect the environment, but also is good for our health. Second, we are supposed to sort the
rubbish into different kinds because some can be reused or recycled. Third, we had better plant
trees. What’s more, stop littering! It’s necessary to put things you don’t need in the bin.
There’s a lot for us to do to help. I think if everyone does something, our environment will
become better and better.
