人与自我:身心健康,抗挫能力,珍爱生命的意识
Andrew has a mental illness. He doesn't speak. He had used a picture chart to communicate. The pictures stand for words—people, places, food and activities.
Years ago, Andrew's parents discovered that he could communicate more by a letter board. He could point to and spell out words and thoughts. Using the letter board needs time and effort for Andrew. He hated to use the letter board, so his parents always offered it to him.

On Andrew's 15th birthday, his mother took him to a shoe store. After buying the shoes, she said. “It's Andrew's birthday today. Fifteen! Now we're off to celebrate.”
The salesmen said happy birthday to Andrew. Instead of having Andrew point to the “thank you” on his picture chart, his mother held up his letter board and asked Andrew how he'd like to respond. Andrew pointed to each letter one by one on the board— “Thank you.” Andrew's mother smiled.

One of the salesmen asked what it was. “This is a letter board that Andrew uses to communicate,” his mother replied. “We've practiced it for years. It's amazing. It's changed everything for us.” Then the salesman told them he had a brother called Jason. “Jason is 30 and doesn't speak,” he said.
“Andrew, what do you think?” his mother turned to Andrew. Andrew started pointing to letters, “Tell Jason…” She was excited. Andrew continued, “Tell Jason he will change everyone's opinion of him in 26 letters.” Andrew's mother and the salesmen were all moved and happy.

Organize a cleanup program. People often throw litter in the place where there is already litter. This leaves the community in a mess. The environment will become better if someone volunteers to help. You could pick up the rubbish with your friends once a week in your neighborhood. You could also help take care of the plants every few days. Surely, a clean and tidy neighborhood will be worth the work.

Show your love to the old. Our city has some old people's homes. Without children around them, the old people there might feel lonely once in a while. Maybe they need your help. In fact, you can do a lot for them. For example, you can talk with them or play games with them. Listening to them carefully is also a good idea. Some old people can't see clearly and they would like you to read to them. No matter what small things you do, you can make them feel loved.

Set up a reading project with your friends. Share your favorite books with them. Besides, you may read aloud to each other and talk about what you read. Either a book or an article can spark a lively discussion and your further thinking. The process often challenges more people to take action. The project is also a good way to welcome newcomers. At the same time, you may find new friends with similar hobbies.

Did you know that a seed(种子) can have its own “identity card(身份证)”? The “card” shows that the seed is at the national crop germplasm bank(国家作物种质库) in Beijing, known as China's seed bank.
A seed's journey to the seed bank starts with a census(普查). China's latest census of agricultural seeds started in 2021 and ended in January this year, reported CCTV News. Workers collected more than 139,000 new seeds from all over the country. They then arrived at the seed bank.
第1课时 阅读选择 二、短文阅读

When seeds first come in, they each get a number for their “physical examination”(检测). For example, workers put all kinds of Job's tears(薏米) from different farms together. Then they put them into groups according to the seeds' look or taste.
Next, workers check the seeds to make sure they're healthy and all the unhealthy ones are given up. A worker at the seed bank showed CCTV News a seed that had a large insect inside it. “A seed like this should not be saved,” he said.

With the bad seeds gone, researchers then test the good ones to see how likely they are to grow. The seed bank has a quick, smart way of doing this: Workers test the seeds and use the information they get to predict(预测) their growth. Workers dry and weigh the best seeds after several tests. Then, they're stored in a super cold freezer(冰箱) at -18 ℃.

China's seed bank keeps all the seeds' information safe and helps people learn about them. This can help develop new plants that can grow better and deal well with hard environments, ensuring the food security(安全) of the country.

Have you ever imagined what bees can do with their tiny brains? Now scientists are looking into a bee's brain.
第1课时 阅读选择 二、短文阅读

Clint Perry, a scientist, has spent much time studying how bees think. He says studying bees is not very different from studying other animals. “The main difficulty is to design(设计) an experiment(实验) bee and get what we want,” he says. “With humans, we can ask them a question and get an answer. But we can't use the same way to get an answer from bees. They are just trying to get sugar. Bees like sugar.”
第1课时 阅读选择 二、短文阅读

The fact that bees like sugar is helpful for scientists to design experiments. For example, in one experiment, Perry gave bees a task: to find delicious sugar on a landing place above a black bar(棒). Perry made the task easier or harder by moving the landing place farther from or closer to the black bar. He found that bees would avoid the task when it was difficult. And when the task was easy, bees would try it.

As for humans, we might choose not to take a test when we weren't ready for it. And we might choose to take the test when we were well prepared. In the same way, bees seemed to make decisions like humans.
Perry points out that we are not sure whether bees actually make a thoughtful choice from experiments. Now scientists still do not know how bees manage to do so much with their tiny brains. But learning more about how bees' brains work could help us learn more about how our own brains deal with information.

Since thousands of years ago, Chinese people have dreamed of going to the moon. Chang'e Flies to the Moon is one of the most popular stories. As you can see, China's first manmade satellite to circle around the moon was named Chang'e Ⅰ. More interestingly, the moon rover(巡视器) was named after the Jade Rabbit, who is the partner of Chang'e in the story. These old stories carry people's best wishes and dreams. With the development of science and technology, our scientists have made them come true.

Kua Fu Runs After the Sun is another story to show how much ancient Chinese people wanted to know about the unknown world. Now, Kua Fu is going with the scientists to “visit” the sun, because we have a space project called Kua Fu Mission.
Besides the ancient stories, space scientists also get ideas from ancient famous people. For example, Mozi, an ancient scientist, discovered that light travels in a straight line over 2,000 years ago. His discovery made space study take a big step at that time.
