Fish: Fish is one of the dishes and it is usually eaten for the New Year dinner. Fish sounds like “yu” in Chinese and it is a word that means “surplus(盈余)”. So eating fish stands for “always having more than you wish for”.
Pork:In some rural areas of China, it is a tradition to kill a pig for the Spring Festival. They kill the pig in order to comfort a year's hard work. Some people who don't raise pigs regard eating pork at the family reunion dinner as a symbol of rich life.

Shrimp: Your mouth looks like you are saying “hahaha” when saying shrimp “xia” in Chinese. People eat shrimp at this most important dinner to wish a happy life for the coming new year.

Do other countries in the world love red? Yes, but maybe no one loves it so much as China. There are some countries that see the color red as a bad symbol because blood is red, too. Others even think that the color red always brings bad luck.
All in all, the color red stands for one of the most important parts of China. So, you could say that the more you know about the color red, the more you know about China.

Lessons Themed on China Red
Last week our school held a series of crosssubject activities themed on “China Red”.
China red is a traditional Chinese color. It is a symbol of happiness, wealth and good luck. That's why China red is widely used in traditional festivals and weddings.
We had many lessons about China red, ranging from history to labor. Our history teacher told us some inspiring revolutionary stories.

We also read aloud some revolutionary poems in the Chinese lesson. Then came my favorite part—art and labor. We drew the Chinese national flag and designed red Chinese things like red packets and red lanterns. We had fun making red Chinese things such as Chinese knots.
We have learned that China red stands for national spirits from these lessons. It is meaningful for Chinese people.
