When people cross their fingers, they usually hope for good luck. For example, if you have an exam, you can cross your fingers and wish for a good result. In the UK and the US, it’s a common way to show hope. But in some Asian countries, people may not understand this gesture at all.
Besides, making a “thumbs up” sign, with your thumb pointing upwards, shows that you like something in many western countries. It’s a way to say “good job” or “excellent.” However, in the Middle East and some West African countries, this gesture is very rude(粗鲁的), just like using bad words.
When you travel or meet people from other cultures, it is really important to learn about their gestures. This helps you talk with others better and avoid disagreement(避免分歧). Remember, a small gesture can tell a big story!

Huangshan is in southern Anhui Province, China, is a world-famous mountain known as “the Loveliest Mountain under Heaven”. As a UNESCO(联合国教科文组织) World Heritage Site, it’s famous for its four wonders: strange pine trees, rocks, sea of clouds, and hot springs. The mountain is like a magic painting, with peaks rising into the sky and clouds floating(漂浮) around them all year round.
Now, I’m climbing up the stone steps, and clouds are dancing around my feet like soft cotton candy. The pine trees here look so funny — some stretch out(伸出) branches like arms waving at me, and others grow from the rocks, their roots holding the mountain tightly. It makes me think: how strong they are! Now I’m standing in front of “Crucian Carp’s Back”(鲫鱼背). The road is as narrow(狭窄的) as a ruler, and below are deep valleys that make my legs shake. Finally! I reach the top. The sun suddenly shines through the clouds, and the mountains below are covered in golden light. White clouds are flowing like a big river — wow, it’s like I’m in a cartoon! I jump up and shout: “Huangshan, I made it!” My legs were tired, but seeing this amazing sight, I feel so happy that I want to fly like a bird. This is really the coolest trip ever!

第二节 书面表达
Dear Penny,
Thanks for your email! My holiday was great. I’m excited to share my Dragon Boat Festival holiday activities with you.
On the festival day, my mom and I first made five-colour ropes, which are believed to bring good luck. We also hung mugwort leaves on the door for good health. Then, we got busy making zongzi. It’s not easy, but it’s really fun. There are zongzi with different flavors. These zongzi are filled with special rice and various fillings. My favorite is zongzi with duck egg yolk.
In the afternoon, I watched the wonderful dragon boat races. Players rowed hard to the exciting drumbeats, people shouted loudly and cheered for the team. All to remember the great poet Qu Yuan.
It was a wonderful festival full of traditional charm.
Yours,
Li Hua
