Does the Dead Sea sound like a place to go swimming? What do you expect to see in it? Do you believe that there are dead things in the Dead Sea?
Lying in the south-west of Asia, the Dead Sea stretches(绵延)for about 80 km. At its deepest point, it is about 400 metres deep. If you happen to be in the area, you might hear people call it by another name, such as the Salt Sea, the East Sea or the Sea of the Plain.
Even though it is called the Dead Sea, it isn’t a sea at all. It is a lake. Different from other lakes that you have seen, the Dead Sea is a very salty lake. In fact, the Dead Sea is one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world. Nothing can survive in it. That is why it is called the Dead Sea. Why is it salty? That is because it gets only a little rain, and very little fresh water gets into the Dead Sea each year. ▲ The Dead Sea is an amazing place to visit, and many people go there each year on holiday. Because of its high salinity, the Dead Sea’s water is denser(密度更大) than ocean water or the water in a swimming pool. That means anyone can float on the Dead Sea. So, if you walk on the beach of the Dead Sea on a warm day, perhaps you can see many people floating in its water. You might even see many of them reading books or magazines!

C.The Dead Sea is getting smaller because of water pollution.
D.Always keep your eyes open while you are in the Dead Sea.
17.What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To ask for ideas on living in the Dead Sea.
B.To share travelling experiences around the Dead Sea.
C.To introduce an amazing wonder in the world.
D.To invite more people to take a holiday at the Dead Sea.

One day Smith drove to the railway station. Afterwards he took me to the White Lion hotel. He left me in the stable there and said he was coming back at four o’clock. In fact, it was nearly nine o’clock when he returned. A nail in one of my front shoes was coming out. When Smith arrived the groom told him about the nail.
“I can fix it for you”, he said. “NO”, said Smith, “leave it. I need to get home.”
He spoke in a very loud, strange way. He seemed to be in a bad temper.
We began to gallop along road. It was very dark and the roads were stony. My shoe became looser, and suddenly it fell off. But Reuben Smith was too drunk to notice.
As I galloped faster and faster along the road with only one shoe, Smith hit me with his whip. Faster! Faster! he shouted. The stones cut my foot and the pain was terrible. Suddenly, I fell down on my knees.
Smith fell off onto the ground, and lay on the road by the light of the moon. I stood there and listened for the sound of horses, or wheels, or men’s footsteps! It was a beautiful April night. I thought of the summer nights long ago, when I lay next to my mother in the green field at Farmer Grey’s.
It was nearly midnight when I heard the sound of a horse’s feet. I neighed(嘶鸣) loudly, and a neigh back. It was Ginger! There were men’s voice too. I heard Robert from our tanled. The men arrived and looked at Reuben’s body on the ground.
“Smith is dead”, said one of the men. His hands are very cold. Then the men saw my cut kneed.
Robert tried to lead me forward. I tried to walk, but almost fell again.
