The Dead Sea might be the most famous saline (盐的) body in the world, but it’s by no means the only one. Here, we uncover some other salt lakes around the world.
Dead Sea
The most famous of the lot, the Dead Sea — also known as the Salt Sea — is a natural place to start. It’s technically not a sea at all, but a land salt lake. Its waters are mainly drawn from the Jordan River, and the high salinity means no life can survive here, so don’t expect any colorful fish. However, much amusement results from the sea’s buoyancy (浮力): Bring some reading material to the waters and lie back — nature will do the rest.
Lake Assal
Surrounded by black volcano rocks, Lake Assal takes the title of being the lowest point in Africa. Vast salt fields mark its edges; the lake has long been at the centre of the area’s salt trade, on which the region’s African locals still rely. Though the area might not be suitable to live in, the waters are rich in minerals and related to health benefits.
Great Salt Lake
The biggest salt lake in the western Hemisphere, and the one that gave Salt Lake City its name, the Great Salt Lake finds its home in northern Utah. What makes the lake well-known is not only the lake’s blue and green waters and white-sand beaches, but also Great Salt Lake State Park and Antelope Island State Park both offer super hiking and biking trails, and great long views.
Don Juan Pond
Don Juan Pond might not win any prizes for its beauty — at four inches deep, it’s little more than a pond, but worth visiting. Its salinity content of almost 40 percent makes it one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth, meaning it doesn’t freeze even when Antarctic temperatures drop to -50℃. And with suggestions that water in a similar form could exist on Mars, there’s more than one reason for scientists to study this fascinating dry, cold environment.
1. What is a unique feature of the Dead Sea?
A. It is a real sea with a large amount of sea life.
B. Its buoyancy allows people to lie on the water easily.
C. It gets its water mainly from underground springs.
D. The water there has a very low salinity.
2. What can we learn about the Great Salt Lake?
A. It’s from the Jordan River and has no life in it.
B. It finds its home in the southern part of Hemisphere.
C. It’s famous for its great scenery and various activities.
D. It got its name from the Salt Lake City.
3. Which of the following is true about Don Juan Pond?
A. It is very deep and has a large area.
B. It is the saltiest body of water on Earth.
C. It has similarities to water form on Mars.
D. It freezes easily when the temperature drops to -50℃.
【答案】1. B 2. C 3. C

After a hard battle with serious injuries, Marc Marquez, a 32-year-old Spanish motorcycle racer, has made a successful comeback to the circuit (赛道). On March 16, the six-time world champion gained his second win in the 2025 MotoGP season at the Argentina Grand Prix.
Born in Cervera, Spain, in 1993, Marquez asked his parents for a bike before he turned 4 years old. In 2013, he launched his MotoGP career with the famous team Repsol Honda, winning his first MotoGP World Championship in his first season. From 2014 to 2019, he dominated the sport, getting five out of six championships with Honda.
Standing at 1.68 meters tall, Marquez earned the nickname “the Ant of Cervera” due to his small build but excellent ability to control the heavy and powerful motorcycle. He pioneered the “elbow (手肘) down” riding style that is popular today, where riders lean over with their elbows close to the ground. A focus on core body strength and flexibility allows Marquez to control a 160-kilogram motorcycle at speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour.
Just when Marquez was on course to even greater success, a serious accident in the 2020 MotoGP season broke his right arm. Since then, he has struggled with a long, slow comeback from a terrible series of crashes and injuries.
It seems that nothing could stop Marquez from trying to return to his peak form. During his recovery, Marquez’s team had to take the wheels off his bike and hide them so he wouldn’t try to ride. He’s not even afraid of the terrible crashes that nearly ended his career. “Maybe sometimes I’m taking too much risk but I cannot ride a bike worrying about the crashing. It is the only way I know to ride a bike fast,” Marquez told The Guardian.
With two continuous wins this season, Marquez has had a strong start to his attempt to secure his first world title since 2019. “I continue fighting because, in the end, my passion for racing is more than what I was suffering,” he added.
4. What can we learn about Marquez’s performance from 2014 to 2019?
A. He was not as excellent as in his first season.
B. He failed to win any championships.
C. He won all six championships with Honda.
D. He dominated the sport with five championships.
5. Why is Marquez called “the Ant of Cervera”?
A. Because he has small build and looks like an ant.
B. Because he has small build and fine control over the motorcycle.
C. Because he has the determination and hard work just like an ant.
D. Because he comes from a place called Cervera alive with ants.
6. What can we infer about Marquez from his words to The Guardian?
A. He thinks it’s not necessary to take risks in racing.
B. He will change his riding style to avoid crashing.
C. He believes taking risks is the only way to ride a bike fast.
D. He is afraid of crashing but it won’t stop him from riding fast.
7. What can we learn about Marque z from the text?
A. He cares more about his safety rather than racing.
B. He is not confident about winning the world title.
C. His passion for racing helps him overcome difficulties.
D He won’t take risks any more when riding a motorcycle.
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. C 7. C

When we talk about ancient Egypt, mummies (木乃伊) are one of the first things that come to mind. In a new research paper, scientists from the UK and Slovenia studied nine mummies at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The finding? They actually smell nice!
The research, carried out by scientists from University College London and the University of Ljubljana, was the first to properly look into the smells of ancient Egyptian mummies. The study aimed at looking at the materials and methods used in mummification. The team also hoped to develop smell as a way to check if the mummies are well-protected without damaging them.
Smells are chemical molecules (化学分子) that are given off by things and “float” in the air. To know how mummies smell, the scientists opened the “coffins (棺材)” and collected some of the air inside using small pipes. The air was then studied with several methods, including gas chromatography (气相色谱法).
Since it works like an electronic “nose”, gas chromatography can tell the difference between gases contained in a mixture. The process begins by pushing the mixture through the machine’s long, thin pipe filled with a special material. When the mixture flows, various gases move at different speeds due to different reactions with the material. Gradually, the gases separate to be tested, explained Technology Networks.
In this way, the team identified certain things used in mummification, such as conifer oils (针叶树油) and cinnamon (肉桂). In addition, some scientists smelled the air themselves. To their surprise, the scents were quite pleasant. Some of the mummies even smelled like flowers and black tea. This suggests “the environment in this museum is actually quite good in terms of preservation”, Matija Strlic, a team member, told AP. The smells might suggest the social class of a mummy, he added.
Now, the scientists are recreating the smells. They plan to present them in the Egyptian Museum in 2026 to improve visitor experience, wrote Cecilia Bembibre, another team member. She is also developing a list of important smells in British culture, such as those found in traditional dishes. “Hopefully, our work with mummified bodies is an example of how you can bring back another dimension (维度) of heritage,” she wrote.
8. What is the main purpose of the research?
A. To develop a new way to keep mummies.
B. To recreate the smells of mummies.
C. To uncover the social class of mummies.
D. To study how the mummies can be protected well.
9. How did scientists study the smells of ancient Egyptian mummies?
A. By using gas chromatography. B. By smelling the mummies directly.
C. By relying on historical records. D. By breaking the mummies apart.
10. What does the underlined word “preservation” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Decoration. B. Destruction. C. Exhibition. D. Protection.
11. What is the main idea of the text?
A Scientists have found that mummies smell nice.
B. Gas chromatography is an important method.
C. The research on the smells of mummies and its significance.
D. The Egyptian Museum will present the recreated smells of mummies.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. D 11. C

Have you ever heard of the term “seasonal color analysis”? It is a personal styling tool helping people find colors that match their natural features, such as skin tone, hair color and eye color. This method divides people into four types — spring, summer, autumn and winter — each with a matching set of colors to help them look better.
The process was so complex that it took me an entire weekend to figure out which season I belong to. Finally, the tool stated that I am a “summer person” and picked the “right” colors for my hair and clothes. But then came the next challenge: I spent nearly eight hours and over 2,000 yuan at the barbershop.
Beauty seems to be an increasingly time-consuming, expensive and tiring effort. The term fu meiyi was even created to describe this phenomenon and has gained popularity on Chinese social media. Many people debate what should be considered part of beauty duty. Some argue that things like wearing makeup, and spending money on fashion are unnecessary and that women should abandon these frivolities (无聊之事). Others believe that women buy clothes and makeup simply because they enjoy them.
From my perspective, we are all influenced by beauty duty because our views of beauty are unavoidably shaped by society’s unrealistic beauty standards. These ideas often promote a single, narrow definition of beauty that is difficult — if not impossible — for people to achieve. For example, I love the color black, but according to seasonal color analysis, it doesn’t suit me. To appear more “beautiful”, I should give up wearing black and only wear light-colored clothing. This so-called beauty standard ignores (忽视) personal preferences and limits self-expression. Furthermore, it ignores the variety of beauty in the world. People come in all shapes, sizes and colors. True beauty should be about accepting and celebrating these differences, not forcing everyone to follow a single standard.
I believe people should be free to dress however they like, as long as it makes them happy. However, we must be aware of how beauty standards are created and imposed (把……强加于) on us, shaping the way we present ourselves — often without us even realizing it.
12. What is “seasonal color analysis” according to the text?
A. A tool to help users figure out what colors suit them best.
B. A tool to help people choose their favorite colors.
C. A tool to divide people into different seasons.
D. A tool to analyze people’s personalities.
13. Why does the author mention her own experience at the barbershop?
A. To show the popularity of seasonal color analysis among people.
B. To show her unwillingness of following beauty standards.
C. To show how time-consuming and expensive beauty duty can be.
D. To prove that having a new hairstyle is a part of beauty duty.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards the so-called beauty standards?
A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Indifferent. D. Curious.
15. Which of the following is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Seasonal color analysis: match your colors perfectly
B. Beauty duty: time-consuming, costly and tiring
C. Beauty duty: different people have different opinions
D. Beauty duty: be careful not to be trapped in it’s cage
【答案】12 A 13. C 14. A 15. D

How Do Birds Determine Directions?
When it comes to how migratory (迁移的) birds navigate (导航) during long-distance flights, the scientific community still hasn’t reached a final conclusion. However, researchers commonly believe that birds’ navigation system results from a combination of multiple senses. ____16____
Birds generally have excellent vision. Environmental indicators like the daytime sun, stars in the night sky, the positions of sunrise and sunset, and noticeable landforms all help birds identify directions. For instance, by observing the sun’s movement, birds can adjust their flight paths throughout the day. ____17____ Their visual power serves as a primary method for direction-finding. Yet vision depends on clear weather; clouds or darkness can limit it.
Apart from visual navigation, certain birds can sense the Earth’s magnetic field (磁场). ____18____ This special ability acts like an internal compass, enabling them to figure out altitude and direction accurately. But how exactly they use it remains unclear to scientists.
____19____ Take homing pigeons as an example — they can identify routes through smells. Even in unfamiliar areas, they pick up specific scent signals in the air, such as natural gas hints or regional plant odors, to find their way. However, not all birds have this strong sense.
Different migratory birds also have varied preferences for migration routes. ____20____ These routes usually provide abundant food, ensuring they have enough energy for the journey. In contrast, some small birds prefer different routes, often to make better use of wind conditions. Understanding these navigation secrets not only reveals nature’s wonders but also offers inspiration for human technological research.
A. Each method of determining their direction is perfect.
B. Birds sometimes mix natural elements with artificial signals for navigation.
C. This inner sensing ability helps their navigation in any weather.
D. Some birds stick to the same path when migrating to and from.
E. Such ability also allows them to recognize distant landmarks.
F. Smell also plays a key role in most birds’ daily activities.
G. These methods put together form their navigation system.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My dad passed away during the fall of my sophomore year in high school. The loss felt like a gaping hole in my heart, and the following months were filled with a deep sense of emptiness and sadness.
That January, I flew to another state to visit a family for whom I had baby-sat since junior high. I had watched the two boys grow into young gentlemen and was very close to their mom, Sarah. I had also spent a great deal of time with their dad, Carl, who was still very thoughtful, always offering a listening ear and a warm smile.
During my weeks of stay with them, I spent with them at their cozy (惬意的) cabin at Lake Tahoe, going on hikes, having conversations about life and sharing laughter around the campfire. Before I left, Carl had pulled me aside, telling me if I ever needed anything, and I should never hesitate to call him. I was deeply touched and felt strengthened knowing there was someone else supporting me.
That summer, I again spent two weeks with them at Lake Tahoe. While time was hard for me after losing my dad, it was nice to visit their family and feel at home with them. Then one day, my mom drove up to visit. As I helped unpack the car for her, I noticed a box with my dad’s Hawaiian shirts. One thing my dad, Russell Robbins, loved was his Hawaiian shirts. His shirts weren’t tacky (俗气的). They were colorful and fun but also tasteful, each one a reflection of his vibrant (充满生气的) personality.
In complete shock, I asked my mom what she was planning on doing with them. I wasn’t ready for her to clean out my dad’s side of the closet yet, and to me, items like his Hawaiian shirts held too many precious memories. My mom explained that Carl had mentioned he would love to have the Hawaiian shirts and she had decided to give them to him.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I couldn’t believe she would even consider doing such a thing.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, when I saw Carl wearing a Hawaiian shirt, I was shocked.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
I couldn’t believe she would even consider doing such a thing. A wave of surprise washed over me, and for a moment, I stood there, frozen in place. I knew Mom had her reasons, but those Hawaiian shirts of Dad’s were so much more than just pieces of clothing to me. It took me long to think it through. Maybe she was trying to find a way to let go of the past. And Carl had always been like a second father to me. If anyone could appreciate those shirts, it was him. With a heavy heart but a newfound understanding, I told her it would be OK, and Carl graciously accepted them.
The next morning, when I saw Carl wearing a Hawaiian shirt, I was shocked. For an instant, my eyes widened in disbelief. It seemed as if I had seen my father himself, standing right before me, a gentle smile playing on his lips. He walked over, looking a bit sheepish. “I hope you don’t mind,” he said softly. “Your dad’s shirts have a special charm.” I took a deep breath and nodded. As he talked about how he admired my dad’s style and spirit, I began to see the shirt not as a loss, but as a way for my dad’s memory to live on in a new way.
①希望:hope/wish

A
The Dead Sea might be the most famous saline (盐的) body in the world, but it’s by no means the only one.
B

B Birds sometimes mix natural elements with artificial signals for navigation.

His shirts weren’t tacky (俗气).
