The world’s strangest coastal celebrations
There’s no better way to tap into the soul of a destination than by diving headfirst into a local festival.
Fiesta de la Candelaria, Puno, Peru (February)
Set on the shores of Lake Titicaca, Peru’s Fiesta de la Candelaria is a blend of Indigenous rituals and traditions. During this two-week celebration, folkloric bands will drum, dance, drink, sing and celebrate from morning until nightfall, when fireworks illuminate the skies. Festivities end with la diablada, the devil dance, performed by panpipe-playing dancers in Andean costumes and masks.
Tremor, The Azores (April)
Turn up the sound system — there are few neighbours to disturb at this music festival on the island of São Miguel, far out in the Atlantic Ocean. The line-up includes both homegrown talent and experimental artists from abroad playing an eclectic medley of genres, from folk and jazz to rock. Performances and installations take place in unusual spots around the island, like churches and abandoned quarries, as well as beside hot springs and volcanic lakes.
Ocean Scilly Festival, Isles of Scilly, UK (August)
The 3rd Ocean Festival is already making waves. With events held across all five islands of the archipelago, some 30 miles off the Cornish coast, the festival celebrates the islands’ rich marine culture heritage. Expect rock pool safaris, gig(rowing boats) racing, shipwreck tours, sunset swims, seal-spotting and kayaking.
Hermanus Whale Festival, South Africa (September)
After months in the icy waters of the Southern Ocean, hundreds of splendid southern right whales make their way to the warmer shores around Hermanus, a coastal spot 75 miles west of Cape Town, famous as one of South Africa’ s best whale-watching locations. Its three-day, late September festival combines opportunities for whale sightings with an eco-minded programme of talks and exhibits that tell the story of local marine life and conservation efforts. Live music, seafood trucks and local arts and crafts fairs add to the festival’s fame.
21. Which festival combines Indigenous rituals with devil dances?
A. Tremor. B. Fiesta de la Candelaria.
C. Ocean Scilly Festival. D. Hermanus Whale Festival.

According to a report by China Daily on April 29, 2022, Wu Ming, a young German born after 1995, is a big fan of Chinese culture.
As he thought some diseases can’t be treated thoroughly with Western medicine, he decided to dig into TCM. Wu came to Central China’s Henan province in 2015, where a profound TCM culture can be enjoyed.
In the early stages, Wu always tasted some Chinese herbal medicine by himself, just like Shen Nong, a character in Chinese legend. He also conquered the language barrier by learning and practicing Chinese. Without a language barrier, Wu read some of the ancient Chinese medical classics, such as Huangdi Neijing. He has been learning traditional Chinese medicine since 2016. Now he is studying for his master degree at Henan University of Chinese Medicine.
Studying TCM changed Wu’s mind and lifestyle. He used to be addicted to electronic devices and stay up late every night, trapped in this fast-paced but unhealthy daily routine. But now, according to the Yin-Yang theory in TCM, he lives a balanced and peaceful life, practicing good habits such as drinking tea and meditating, as well as reading ancient books.
Wu also uses what he has learned to help his family. Previously, acupuncture(针灸)tools and Chinese medicine were necessities when he went back to his home in Germany. With acupuncture and Chinese-style massages(推拿), various physical disorders of his families have been well-treated. Over time, his family gradually began to understand his passion about TCM.
He plans to run a traditional Chinese clinic in China or Germany after graduation, which could serve as a bridge between the two countries and publicize TCM and its culture.
24. Why did Wu Ming choose to study TCM?
A. He wished to obtain a master’s degree.
B. He wanted to promote Chinese culture.
C. He intended to obtain the charm of Henan province.
D. He hoped to make up for Western medicine’s limitations.
25. What can we learn about Wu Ming’s study of TCM?
A. His family opposed TCM. B. He ran a traditional Chinese clinic.
C. He broke barriers to study TCM. D. He learned TCM via Chinese legend.
26. What was Wu Ming’s lifestyle like before studying TCM?
A. Balanced with Yin-Yang theory. B. Addicted to electronics and late nights.
C. Engaged in meditating and reading. D. Interested in acupuncture practice.
27. What is Wu Ming’s attitude toward TCM?
A. Positive. B. Critical. C. Skeptical. D. Indifferent.

2024 was the hottest year on record and the first year Earth’s temperature surpassed 1.5℃. A warmer planet doesn’t just raise temperatures. From wildfires to floods, here’s how the climate is changing.
Climate change encompasses not only rising average temperatures but also natural disasters, shifting wildlife habitats, rising seas, and a range of other impacts. All of these changes are emerging as humans continue to add heat-trapping greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide and methane (甲烷), to the atmosphere.
When fossil fuel emissions are pumped into the atmosphere, they change the chemistry of our atmosphere, allowing sunlight to reach the Earth but preventing heat from being released into space. This keeps Earth warm, like a greenhouse, and this warming is known as the greenhouse effect. Carbon dioxide is the most commonly found greenhouse gas and a majority of all the climate warming pollution in the atmosphere. Methane is another common greenhouse gas. Sources of this gas include agriculture, leaks from oil and gas production, and waste from landfills.
One of the most concerning impacts of global warming is the effect warmer temperatures will have on Earth’s polar regions and mountain glaciers. The Arctic is warming four times faster than the rest of the planet. This warming reduces critical ice habitat.
Limiting the rising in global warming is theoretically achievable, but politically, socially, and economically difficult. For example, oil and gas used to generate electricity or power industrial manufacturing will need to be replaced by net zero emission technology like wind and solar power. Transportation, another major source of emissions, will need to integrate more electric vehicles, public transportation, and innovative urban design. Restoring nature may also help limit warming. Trees, oceans, wetlands, and other ecosystems help absorb extra carbon. Ultimately, we’ll need to adapt to warming temperatures, building homes to withstand sea level rise for example, or more efficiently cooling homes during heat waves.
32. What does the word “encompasses” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. includes. B. excludes. C. controls. D. reduces.
33. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. Causes of global warming. B. Types of greenhouse gases.
C. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. D. Methane sources in agriculture.
34. What can we infer about limiting global warming?
A. Carbon dioxide removal is the key to success.
B. Natural ecosystems can absorb extra carbon.
C. Adapting to warming is more effective than preventing it.
D. Economic development will unavoidably be affected during the process.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To criticize the impacts of human activities.
B. To compare the effects of greenhouse gases.
C. To promote the use of solar energy in transportation.
D. To illustrate the diverse elements of climate change issues.

Many people bite their nails when they are stressed, excited, bored, or inactive. For example, students might bite their nails when facing exam pressure or when they are sitting through a boring class. If a child sees someone else biting their nails, they might pick up the habit too. ____36____. However, this seemingly harmless habit can actually cause several problems.
In the long term, nail-biting can prevent normal nail growth and lead to odd-shaped nails. It can also raise the risk of nail and mouth infections. Some people may feel ashamed or self-conscious about their nail-biting habit, which can affect their self-esteem. If you’re struggling with this habit, don’t worry. There are effective ways to break this habit.
One effective approach is to cut your nails short and smooth the edges. ____37____. Wearing artificial nails can also protect your nails and stop you from biting them.
____38____. This could include taking deep breaths, doing exercise, or practicing mindfulness. Another practical solution is to paint a bitter-tasting polish on your nails. The awful taste will make you less likely to continue the behavior.
Moreover, you can replace the nail-biting action with other activities. When you find yourself biting your nails, try substituting another activity, such as clenching your fist, squeezing a stress ball, or playing with a small fidget toy. Finally, don’t forget to get support. Let your family and friends know about your plan to stop biting your nails. ____39____.
Remember, changing a habit takes time and patience. ____40____. Keep trying, and you will eventually be able to break the habit.

B. Engage in regular hand-care routines
C. Nail-biting is a common habit with various causes

Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a small village. The village thrived in the heart of a big jungle. Surrounded by the towering mountains and in the shade of green trees, the villagers happily lived a life of extreme happiness.
All of them were used to their robotic daily tasks and none of them had the imagination or the will to try something new, except for one girl named Hannah. Very few people in the village could read let alone write, and Hannah was one of them. Her parents had made sure that their only child gets everything possible.
Hannah was an adventurous spirit with an imagination far beyond her time. She loved to explore and would spend hours in the woods looking for new things. She loved to create stories in her head and used to imagine herself as one of her characters.
One afternoon, when Hannah was on one of her adventurous explorations, she came upon an abandoned cottage. The cottage looked very old in its condition.
The door was barely hanging and the wood was peeling off. Even though Hannah’s mother had strictly warned her not to go wandering in abandoned places, her curiosity got the best of her.
She tip-toed slowly to the door and slowly opened it and she was left astonished. In front of Hannah was a room full of books! Books glistering in the dust enjoying in the warm sunlight just waiting to be explored. Hannah’s excitement was visible on her face as she jumped up and down with delight!
Hannah was breathless as she realized that she had found a hidden treasure. She knew in her heart that she had to read all of them so she quickly got to work. She dusted the books, the shelves, and what was left of the furniture. Hannah broomed, and swept, and dusted all day long until she realized that it was dark and she had to go back to her home. But the books, oh she couldn’t get herself to leave without at least reading one.

22. What can visitors experience at the Hermanus Whale Festival?

With acupuncture and Chinese-style massages(推拿), various physical disorders of his families have been well-treated. Over time, his family gradually began to understand his passion about TCM.
He plans to run a traditional Chinese clinic in China or Germany after graduation, which could serve as a bridge between the two countries and publicize TCM and its culture.

D
【答案】32. A 33. A 34. D 35. D

This keeps Earth warm, like a greenhouse, and this warming is known as the greenhouse effect.(当化石燃料排放物被排放到大气中时,它们改变了我们大气的化学成分,使阳光能够到达地球,但阻止热量释放到太空中。这使得地球像温室一样温暖,这种变暖被称为温室效应)”以及后文对二氧化碳和甲烷等温室气体的介绍可知,第三段主要讲了全球变暖的原因。故选A项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“Limiting the rising in global warming is theoretically achievable, but politically, socially, and economically difficult. For example, oil and gas used to generate electricity or power industrial manufacturing will need to be replaced by net zero emission technology like wind and solar power.(从理论上讲,限制全球变暖的加剧是可以实现的,但在政治、社会和经济方面却很困难。例如,用于发电或为工业生产提供动力的石油和天然气需要被风能和太阳能等净零排放技术所取代)”可知,在限制全球变暖的过程中,需要用风能和太阳能等净零排放技术来替换石油和用于发电或为工业生产提供动力的石油和天然气,在这一过程中,经济发展不可避免地会受到影响。故选D项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,结合第一段“2024 was the hottest year on record and the first year Earth’s temperature surpassed 1.5℃. A warmer planet doesn’t just raise temperatures. From wildfires to floods, here’s how the climate is changing.(2024年是有记录以来最热的一年,也是地球温度首次超过1.5℃的一年。地球变暖不仅仅是气温上升。从野火到洪水,以下是气候正在发生的变化)”、第二段“Climate change encompasses not only rising average temperatures but also natural disasters, shifting wildlife habitats, rising seas, and a range of other impacts.(气候变化不仅包括平均气温上升,还包括自然灾害、野生动物栖息地的变化、海平面上升以及一系列其他影响)”以及后文对气候变化原因和应对措施的介绍可知,本文主要目的是说明了气候变化问题的多个方面。故选D项。

A. Try stress-management techniques

Books glistering in the dust, enjoying in the warm sunlight just waiting to be explored.

【答案】参考范文:
On the way home, Hannah met her friends who were interested by what she was carrying. Holding the book tightly, her palms sweating with a mix of excitement and nervousness, she tried to explain the wonder of the hidden books. Surrounded by her skeptical friends, Hannah, with eagerness, turned the pages, her eyes shining with passion. “These books are full of wonderful tales,” she exclaimed, “They can take us to different places and times!” Some friends rolled their eyes, considering her tales mere fantasies. Despite their doubts, Hannah’s enthusiasm remained unchanged.
Inspired by the books, she decided to share them with the villagers. Transforming the abandoned cottage into a cozy library, Hannah arranged the books neatly. Standing at the entrance, she waited for villagers to explore the treasure. Initially, only a few children walked in, fascinated by her vivid storytelling. Gradually, adults were drawn in, their curiosity aroused. The once-dull village came alive. Through Hannah’s perseverance, she not only bridged the gap between the old-fashioned and the new but also proved that knowledge, when shared, has the power to transform lives and communities.
