And so do dogs. Work is good for us. While holidays are great, after a while, we can miss our sense of daily life and work, of duty and purpose. This is what happened to the German Shephard, Dorka. She was a bomb-detection (探测炸弹的) dog with the US Army in Afghanistan. Every day, with her owner Monte, she looked for bombs to protect the soldiers (士兵). When the dog and her owner’s duties were over, Monte brought Dorka home with him. But he soon found that Dorka was depressed. She missed her job and the sense of purpose it gave her. Her owner tried different things to cheer her up but nothing seemed to work. Then Monte had an idea. He began hiding objects for Dorka to find. The objects had a similar smell to what Dorka had been trained to look for. He’d hide them under parked cars or other hidden places. On their walks, it would be Dorka’s job to find these hidden objects. Soon, Monte noticed Dorka’s ears stand up and that her young energy had returned. “I immediately saw she was back to her happy self,” said Monte in a video he made for their TikTok channel, shared by the animal lovers’ site, The Dodo. “Seeing her happy makes me happy,” said Monte in the video. But why did this make Dorka so happy? It seems that she once again felt her purpose in life. Dorka had kept Monte safe in the war, and now Monte was looking after Dorka. What a beautiful friendship Monte and Dorka share! 5. What was the job of Dorka with the US Army in Afghanistan? A. She cheered soldiers up. B. She was a bomb-detection expert. C. She looked for bombs to protect the soldiers. 6. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “depressed” in Paragraph2? A. Tired. B. Upset. C. Worried. 7. What can we know from Paragraph 3? A. What Monte did to cheer Dorka up. B. Where Monte usually hid the objects. C. How Dorka found the hidden objects. 8. What does the writer want to tell us? A. Humans and dogs are good friends. B. Dogs need the purpose of life as humans. C. Humans need to take good care of dogs. 【答案】5. C 6. B 7. A 8. 根据“She was a bomb-detection (探测炸弹的) dog with the US Army in Afghanistan. Every day, with her owner Monte, she looked for bombs to protect the soldiers (士兵).”可知,她每天搜寻炸弹以保护士兵,故选C。 【6题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词后的“She missed her job and the sense of purpose it gave her. Her owner tried different things to cheer her up but nothing seemed to work.”可知,后文描述“Dorka想念工作”、“主人尝试多种方法使其振作无效”,因此depressed意为“难过的”。故选B。 【7题详解】 细节理解题。根据“Then Monte had an idea. He began hiding objects for Dorka to find…On their walks, it would be Dorka’s job to find these hidden objects.”可知,该段详细描述他设计寻物游戏以让Dorka开心的。故选A。 【8题详解】 主旨大意题。根据“We all need purpose in our lives. And so do dogs.”可知,首段首句点明主题:“人类需要生活目标,狗亦如此”;结尾再次强调“It seems that she once again felt her purpose in life.”,因此选项B“狗和人类一样需要生活目标”是全文核心观点。故选B。 C Fighting Food Waste The Chinese people have developed the habit of ordering more dishes than they can eat when inviting friends or relatives for dinner in a restaurant. If all the plates are empty at the end of the dinner, it would be considered a matter of shame for the host. Surveys show that, on average (平均), 93 grams of food is wasted by each person having dinner in a restaurant. This is about 12% of the food they order. For parties, the leftovers (剩饭) can be as high as 38% of the total dishes ordered. According to China Daily, as much as 35 million tons of grain (粮食) — that’s 6% of the total grain output in China — is wasted every year. Therefore, people came up with different ways to fight food waste. In 2013, the “Clean Your Plate” activity was started in China. Restaurant owners, food associations (食品协会), the public and different levels of governments all liked this activity. There are small papers on more and more restaurant tables. They tell diners to order only the food they can eat. And more waiters and waitresses will tell customers not to order more if they think the customers have ordered enough. Moreover, the awareness (意识) of reducing food waste is also increasing among customers. During the eight-day Spring Festival holiday in 2024, which is usually full of big meals, Liu Han, a 24-year-old in Beijing, tried not to waste food in many holiday get-togethers. Liu went out to eat with friends four times during the holiday. He planned each meal carefully to avoid food waste. He used restaurant review apps to find group-buying deals. He looked at the dishes on nearby tables to know the size of the dishes. He also asked the staff to make sure he didn’t order too much. Liu said, “People sometimes have big eyes but a small stomach.” All in all, what people do nowadays shows a great change from past years, because “saving face” often led to too much ordering. Food waste is a big problem. Every grain counts. If people all save food, we can make our world a better place. 9. What was considered a shame for the host in the past when having dinner in a restaurant? A. Ordering too many dishes. B. Not inviting enough friends. C. Having all the plates empty at the end of the dinner. 10. How does Paragraph 2 show the fact of food waste? A. By telling a story. B. By comparing facts. C. By listing numbers. 11. What does “People sometimes have big eyes but a small stomach” mean? A. People are always very hungry. B. People seem very hungry but can’t eat much. C. People have big eyes and a small stomach. 12. When it drops you off, it drives itself back home, so you don’t have to worry about parking. These are what self-driving cars can do. According to Wired magazine, it’s a whole system with different parts that need care. Things like road networks (网络) influence it. Although making self-driving cars takes a lot of time and money, the advantages are worth it. For example, self-driving cars could reduce (减少) road accidents. The US government’s data shows that 94 percent of accidents happen because of drivers’ mistakes. Using self-driving cars means spending less money on the payment of medicine, less missed work and fewer car repairs. Besides, these cars could also use less fuel (汽油) and produce less pollution by cutting down on traffic problems and not running when they’re not needed. What’s more, these cars can give more freedom to disabled people. Many big companies such as Baidu and Tesla are making self-driving cars. Wired magazine said this technology could add $7 trillion (more than 49 trillion yuan) to the world economy (经济) soon. Goldman Sachs, a global bank, said self-driving cars could make up 10 percent of new car sales by 2030. Anyway, be open to new things and welcome their coming! 13. What can a self-driving car do according to the first paragraph? A. It can drive people to the place without directions and return by itself. B. It can teach people how to park in a proper place. C. It can help people plan the best route to save time. 14. What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about? A. The standards of self-driving cars. B. The advantages of self-driving cars. C. The problems of making self-driving cars. 15. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Only Baidu and Tesla are working on self-driving technology. B. He created his own electronic Braille reader (电子盲文阅读器). Mehta’s journey began when he visited his grandfather in India, who helps run a school for the blind. He found that none of the students had a modern electronic braille reader. Then he learned that most braille readers cost around $3,000, with some costing as much as $15,000. Mehta, who loves engineering and helping others, decided to make a model that cost less than $50. After overcoming problems such as coding (编程), the young engineer finally invented a small reader that only cost $35, with 86 percent accuracy (准确率). Mehta noticed the serious situation for the blind around the world. “There are now 36 million people with eyesight problems around the world. Also, 89percent of blind people live in low and medium-income (中低收入的) countries, where it is very hard to find electronic braille reader.” said Mehta. Having cheaper braille readers is necessary for the education of the blind because they can’t pay for the expensive braille readers. “Cutting down the cost of braille readers is very important to make education more possible for everyone,” Mehta said. For Mehta, cutting the cost of the machine is not enough. He also wants to make the machine more convenient to use, such as by improving its WiFi connection. He is now working with schools and hopes to provide 1,000 free readers to blind people in developing countries each year. 41. C Fighting Food Waste The Chinese people have developed the habit of ordering more dishes than they can eat when inviting friends or relatives for dinner in a restaurant. 12. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage? (P = Paragraph) A. B. C. D Imagine this: You jump into a car on a weekend morning, and it takes you to the place you want to go, without needing any directions. When it drops you off, it drives itself back home, so you don’t have to worry about parking. These are what self-driving cars can do. A self-driving car, also called a driverless car, is a car that can sense the environment around it and drive itself. Depending on how advanced (先进的) the car is, it might need different standards (标准) of human help. At the highest standards, a person might not need to control the car at all. But at lower standards, a person might still need to control it sometimes. However, making self-driving cars isn’t simple. B. Self-driving cars will take the place of traditional cars completely. C. The development of self-driving cars can help economic grow. 16. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. The History of Making Cars. B. The Development of Self-Driving Cars. C. The Big Companies of Making Cars. 41.
