It is often said that you can't have too many friends. But it seems that there is a natural limit to the number of people we stay in touch with. A study found that when we make new friends, by starting a new job or going to university, we downgrade or even drop old ones. And while the friends may change, the number stays almost the same.
Oxford University researcher Felix Reed-Tsochas asked 24 students in the final months of school to list all their friends and relatives and say how close to them they were. The pupils filled in the questionnaire(问卷) twice more after starting work or going to university. They were also given free mobile phones and agreed that researchers could use their bills to work out who they called, when and for how long.
Putting the two pieces of information together showed, unsurprisingly, that most people have a small circle of close friends, who they spend most of their time talking to. This inner circle is surrounded by group after group of ever more distant friends. As the volunteers' lives changed, this overall pattern, including the number of best friends, remained almost the same, meaning that some close friends from childhood were dropped or downgraded as new friendships were built.
Dr Reed-Tsochas said: "Maybe my best friend is no longer the same person but the amount of time I allocate(分配) to my best friend is still the same." He added that this finding suggests that even with the coming of modem technology we are only capable of forming a limited number of true friendships.
Chester University researcher Dr Sam Roberts said: "Our results are likely to reflect limitations in the ability of humans to keep emotionally close relationships both because of limited time and because the emotional capital(情绪资本) that individuals can allocate between family members and friends is limited. "
24. What is a popular belief about making friends?
A. A friend in need is a friend indeed. B. We should treat friends as our family
C. The more friends we make, the better. D. A friend to everybody is a friend to nobody
25. Which is the method Dr Reed-Tsochas used in his study?
A. Checking the volunteers’ call records. B. Learning about the volunteers’ hobbies
C. tracking the volunteers’ job performance D. Interviewing the volunteers’ schoolmates
26. What did the researchers find from the study?
A. One’s attitude to friendship remains the same.
B. People attach great importance to friendships.
C. People rarely drop their old friends to make new ones.
D. The number of one’s best friends doesn’t change much.
27. What is the function of the last paragraph?
A. To add background information B. To give a possible explanation
C. To offer some suggestions D. To introduce a new topic
C
Hello! Wait! Don’t run away. Yes, I know I am a roach. So, what’s wrong with that?
You are speaking to the most successful species on the planet, you know! We’ve been around for 350
million years!
So what’s the secret of our success? Sure, we’ve had plenty of enemies. If you’re small and full of
protein, everything wants to eat you. So what did we do? We got quick, is what. We learned to hide, is what.
We can squeeze so flat that we can fit through a gap no bigger than a coin. Really! I dare you, try it.
And we never skip a meal! What do we eat? What have you got? Rotting leaves, garbage, glue, paper,
leather…and if you like to eat dead things, I tell you, the world is your refrigerator! But just don’t offer me a cucumber or plastics!
Once humans came along, we went everywhere humans went. In ships, on planes, in camel packs across the desert. Roach road trip! We even followed them to space! That’s Uncle Anton. He hid on board the Apollo capsule --- he was so mad when they just came right back to earth.
You can’t have too many roaches, I say. Now there are 4,000 species of us: Asian, American, German…I hope you get to meet them all someday.
Some of the family get pretty strange. That’s Reginald. He thinks if he pretends to be a firefly, birds won’t eat him. That’s tough old Aunt Flo. She worked for some scientists trying to figure out ways to get rid of us… ha! Poison, radiation, heat, cold… whatever they throw at us, we just get tougher. Bring it on!
Aw, look, that’s me just after my 15 brothers and sisters and I hatched (孵化) out from our egg case. Yeah, I look pretty much the same. That’s another roach wonder --- we skip the larva stage (幼虫期). Our eggs hatch all ready to roll! Still pretty cute, though.
Yep, that’s how we got to be the most successful species on the planet!
28. What may contribute to a roach’s success?
① being flexible ② running like wind ③ being full of protein ④ raising many babies
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①③④ D. ①②④
29. According to Paragraph5, who is Uncle Anton?
A. A hero. B. A spaceman. C. A roach. D. A traveler.
30. What can we learn about roaches from the article?
A. They can almost roll when they are brought to the word.
B. Their number is coming down thanks to scientist’ efforts.
C. Their home is usually equipped with a refrigerator full of foods.
D. They are getting along quite well with other species on the planet.
31. What is the tone of the passage?
A. Pitiful. B. Anxious. C. Serious. D. Humorous
D
What makes preschoolers eat their vegetables? Raise their hand? Wait their turn? “Because I say so” is a comment that parents often repeat. But when it comes to getting kids to behave, a recent study by Duke University researchers suggests that the voice of adult authority isn’t the only thing that matters. Around age three, fitting in with the group starts to count big too.
To understand what cause preschoolers to fall in line, the researchers conducted a test in a lab, where they invited 3.5-year-olds to help set up for a pretend tea party. Each of the 104 children was given a blue sticker(贴纸)to wear at the start of the study, and told that the people with that color sticker were part of the same team. Next the researchers watched as the children decided among different kinds of teas, snacks, cups and plates for the tea party, first on their own and then after listening to the choices of other team members.
Sometimes the other team members considered their choice as a matter of personal preference (“For my tea party today, I feel like using this snack.”) Other times they presented it as a need shared by the whole group. (“For our tea parties today, we always use this kind of snack.”)
After listening to the choices of others, most of the time the children stuck with their first choice. In other words, children who had said they felt like using, say, the cookie finally picked the cookie no matter what the other person said they were using. But 23% of the time the children changed their choice to accept someone else’s. And when they did, they were more likely to go along with the other person when a choice was presented as a group need rather than just a personal preference. The finding held up even when the other person was another child, not an adult.
32. What’s the recent study mainly about?
A. Parent training. B. Social rules. C. Child behavior. D. Eating habits.
33. What does the underlined word “fall in line” refer to in paragraph 2?
A. Stand in a line. B. Join the group. C. Listen to the parents. D. Attend a party.
34. What made children accept others’ choice?
A. The common need. B. The advice of adults.
C. The delicious cookie. D. The individual preference.
35. Which of the following is suitable title for the text?
A. Adults Are Losing Their Authority
B. 3-Year-Olds Want to Fit into the Group.
C. Children Are Not Born Knowing What to Do
D. Kids Are Acting Out of a Sense of Copying Adults.

W: It’s such a pretty day out here in the woods. I love hiking, but I also like board sports.
M: What do you mean? Like sports that you do with a board?
W: Exactly. If you could choose from surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding, which one would be your favorite?
M: Well, when I was little, my dad was a ski instructor, so I grew up snowboarding. But I got really good at surfing when I moved to my seaside town 10 years ago. That’s pretty much all I do these days. What about you?
W: I’d probably have to say skateboarding. There are many fun things to do in the city, but everyone I know loves to skate. It is pretty easy to pick up (7).

M: Hi, Megan. How are you?
W: Not too good, actually.
M: Oh? Why’s that?
W: Well, something terrible happened this morning
M: What? I’m so sorry. Take your time, and tell me what happened when you’re ready.
W: Well, I was playing with Bonzo in the garden with a basketball, and the ball went over the fence into the road, and...
M: Yes?
W: And Bonzo jumped over the fence after it and he got hit by a car. (8)
M: Oh, no! And is he...
W: Yes. We took him to the animal doctor immediately, but.··
M: Oh, poor Bonzo! And poor you! I know how much he meant to you. (9) At least he had a happy life.
W: But his life was too short!
M: You’re right. That was a really bad thing to say. Listen, I have to go home now, but I'll come around and see you later, OK?

W: I think my hearing is getting worse. I wonder if that usually happens as we get older.
M: I don’t think so. My father is 75 and he has very sharp hearing. (10)
W: Maybe it’s related to the family. I wonder if anyone in my family has this problem, maybe my sister...
M: I doubt it. Did you get very sick when you were a child? Maybe a sickness caused some hearing loss. You have never really been able to hear me well when I speak.
W: I just choose to ignore some things, dear.
M: Well, then.. .maybe it was from when we lived in southern France. The winds were very strong in our area. And you spent a lot time outdoors. In any case, you should probably get checked by a doctor to see if you have a problem. Maybe you’ll need a hearing aid. (11) (12)
W: No way! I’m only 36 years old. I won’t go around looking like an old person! (12)
M: If you feel that way... Honey, is dinner ready yet?
W: What did you say? I can’t hear you.
M: I said, can I help you get dinner ready?
W: Thank you, dear. That would be wonderful.

W: Hey, Michael. Did you have trouble finding the apartment? (13) I called your phone but you didn’t pick up.
M: Oh, yeah. Sorry, Rachel. I left my cell phone at home.
W: That’s OK. My friend from school is here, keeping me company. (13) So what happened? I thought you got off work at 4:00.
M: There were so many shoppers today (15), So I stayed a little later than usual. It wouldn’t be fair to leave my colleagues when it was that busy.
W: I understand. The mall is always busy this time of year (15). You know, you didn’t have to come straight here. You could have gone home first.
M: I felt bad that I didn’t come when said I would. Actually I probably would have arrived a little earlier, but I saw a man who was stuck on the side of the road. Luckily, I had a spade in my car soI was able to dig him out of the snow. (14)
W: Well, I’m glad you could make it. The others will be arriving shortly. They’re just outside looking for a place to park. (13) Would you like some hot chocolate?
M: That sounds good, but first I need to get out of my uniform. I brought some extra clothes.
W: Don’t be silly. I already have some ready for you. Sit down and relax. The hot chocolate will warm you up (16).
M: OK, if you insist.
