Facebook’s parent Meta said it had built a technology tool to directly translate between English and the Hokkien language, a spoken language without a widely used written form.
Meta said it trained its AI models on written text examples from Mandarin Chinese. In addition, developers used an encoding tool designed to compare spoken Hokkien to similar English text. Method to identify Parkinson’s disease
Researchers announced a new AI method to identify Parkinson’s disease. The system works by measuring a person’s breathing patterns during sleep. With just one night of sleep, the AI system was able to correctly identify Parkinson’s up to 86 percent of the time. With 12 nights of data, the rate went up to 95 percent. Researchers announced they had created a technology tool that uses pig sounds to interpret different emotions.
The tool is based on thousands of recordings collected from more than 400 pigs throughout their lives. The scientists developed an AI-driven approach to identify a series of emotions pigs could be experiencing. It is expected to lead to further systems farmers can use to improve the productivity and well-being of their animals. Tool to fill in missing words in ancient writings
Researchers—led by Alphabet’s AI company Deep Mind—said they developed an AI system to help fill in missing words in ancient writings. The tool, called Ithaca, is designed to help historians repair the writings and identify when and where they were written.
The team said that when historians work on their own, the success rate for repairing damaged writings is about 25 percent. But when humans teamed up with Ithaca to assist in their work, the success rate jumped to 72 percent.

Medha Pappula, an eighth-grader at Brambleton Middle School, is using her skill set to solve a problem — bullying(霸凌). She recently earned an award (获奖) from National Bullying Prevention Center (NBPC) for her anti-bullying efforts in software development and animation (动画).
Pappula, 13, said she discovered that a classmate had experienced cyberbullying(网络霸凌), which was painful for her to learn about. “Even though I didn’t experience it, I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, even my worst enemy,” Pappula said.
Then she developed a program that recognizes when digital and text-based messages include bullying language. The program takes a message, and then recognizes signs of bullying and gives a rating to the cyberbullying, the teen said. If the rating is high, she said, “the program can be used to carry out things like removing that message or reporting it.”
Pappula first designed and tested the program for Discord, a popular community-based messaging platform (平台), and said she plans to develop it for even bigger platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
In addition to this program, the NBPC awarded Pappula for a three-minute animated video about Unity Day, which she created and shared on YouTube last October. Unity Day, according to the video, was started by the NBPC in 2011 to raise bullying awareness among school-age children. Schools encourage their students to wear orange on Unity Day, as it is “a color that is connected with safety,” the website reads.
Pappula visited different websites to develop her animation skills several years ago. She spent more than a month creating her 2-D animated video using an animation software called Krita. The effort paid off, as nearly 6,000 people have already viewed the “Unity Day” video on YouTube. Along with being posted to the NBPC webpage, her animation was also shared by Cartoon Network. Moving forward, Pappula hopes to continue to work with the NBPC and to use her skills to lift those around her.
24.How did Pappula feel about bullying?
A.It upset her life a lot. B.It could be stopped easily.
C.It happened online most often. D.It shouldn’t happen to anyone.
25.How does Pappula’s program work?
A.By sending voice messages.
B.By removing useless messages.
C.By sending its users important reports.
D.By grading messages according to the language used.
26.What did Pappula do to make the animated video?
A.She asked the NBPC for help. B.She taught herself animation.
C.She learned from an expert. D.She created Krita.

You forget to bring your water bottle to the airport, so you buy a plastic one and keep refilling it. Or you order takeout for dinner and save the black plastic container to pack your lunch the next day. Reuse is one of the core rules of sustainability. But should you be reusing these single-use plastics? Experts say no.
Single-use plastics leach (滤出) chemicals and shed (释放) microplastics into your environment. Though studies have not directly compared single-use and reusable plastic, experts say they are more concerned about single-use plastics because of how they’re made. A single-use plastic water bottle sheds micro-and nanoplastics into your water when you refill it, and a takeout container or frozen meal tray sheds these particles into your food. Chemical exposure increases if plastic is heated, typically in a microwave, a dishwasher or even by placing hot food in a takeout container. When heat is applied, molecules move faster, meaning it could be easier for some of these particles to make its way into your food.
The danger of heating your plastic also applies to reusable plastic, like baby bottles and plastic storage containers, according to Judith Enck, president of Beyond Plastics. Research found that black plastic in sushi trays, and other objects contain high levels of flame retardants (延缓剂). These poisonous chemicals have been linked to physical and mental problems.
Concerns with chemicals and microplastics primarily apply to food, experts said, because you are swallowing them. Reusing single-use plastics like grocery bags is not a major concern, they added. The most important thing you should do is avoid subjecting your plastic to heat, experts agreed. “A pretty hard-and-fast rule is to never microwave plastic,” Enc k said. “And there’s also a recommendation not to put plastic into the dishwasher if it’s on a hot cycle.”
If you order takeout, it’s best to transfer the food to a nonplastic dish as soon as possible, and you should use a plate when microwaving your food.
28.Why does the author list examples in the first paragraph?
A.To lead in the topic. B.To prove the experts’ opinion.

29.What can we learn from the research?
A.Plastic bottles of good quality is encouraged to use.
B.It is the chemicals in the materials that cause trouble.
C.High temperature makes little difference to takeout food.
D.Reusable plastic is more dangerous than single-use plastic.
30.Which situation poses the biggest threat to human’s health?
A.Heating fast food in a glass bowl.
B.Filling the grocery bag with meat.
C.Packing cold drink with single-use plastics.
D.Ordering hot soup contained in a plastic bag.
31.What is a suitable title for the text?

Or you order takeout for dinner and save the black plastic container to pack your lunch the next day. Reuse is one of the core rules of sustainability. But should you be reusing these single-use plastics? 故选A。

(一次性塑料会向环境中滤出化学物质并释放微塑料。)”以及“A single-use plastic water bottle sheds micro-and nanoplastics into your water when you refill it, and a takeout container or frozen meal tray sheds these particles into your food.
根据第二段中“Chemical exposure increases if plastic is heated, typically in a microwave, a dishwasher or even by placing hot food in a takeout container. (如果塑料被加热,通常是在微波炉、洗碗机中,甚至是把热的食物放在外卖容器里,化学物质的暴露就会增加。)”以及第三段中“Research found that black plastic in sushi trays, and other objects contain high levels of flame retardants (延缓剂)。These poisonous chemicals have been linked to physical and mental problems. (研究发现,寿司托盘和其他物品中的黑色塑料含有高水平的阻燃剂。这些有毒化学物质与身体和精神问题有关。)”可知,用塑料袋装热汤对人体的危害最大。故选D。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中“Reuse is one of the core rules of sustainability. But should you be reusing these single-use plastics? Experts say no. (再利用是可持续发展的核心原则之一。但是你应该重复使用这些一次性塑料吗?专家说不。)”和第二段中“Single-use plastics leach (滤出) chemicals and shed (释放) microplastics into your environment. (一次性塑料会向环境中滤出化学物质并释放微塑料。)”以及“A single-use plastic water bottle sheds micro-and nanoplastics into your water when you refill it, and a takeout container or frozen meal tray sheds these particles into your food. (当你给一次性塑料水瓶加水时,它会向水中释放微塑料和纳米塑料,外卖容器或冷冻餐盘也会将这些颗粒释放到你的食物中。)”可知,文章主要说明了重复使用一次性塑料用品的危害,B选项“Reusing Single-use Plastics Is Harmful (重复使用一次性塑料是有害的)”最符合题意。故选B。

Like those who love science fictions, I’ve spent a lot of time wondering how society will greet true artificial intelligence. Will we panic? Or will we ignore it and go about our daily lives?
So it was fascinating to watch ChatGPT, a new cutting-edge A.I. chatbot opened for testing last week. Built by OpenAI, ChatGPT, the best A.I. chatbot ever released to the general public, landed with a splash. In five days, more than a million people signed up to test it and hundreds of screenshots of ChatGPT conversations went viral on Twitter.
For the past decade, A.I. chatbots have been terrible. While a few have gotten good at doing narrow and well-defined tasks, like writing marketing copy, they don’t function well when taken outside their comfort zones. But ChatGPT feels different. Smarter. Weirder. More flexible. It can write jokes, work computer code and compose college-level essays. It can also guess at medical diagnoses, and explain scientific concepts at multiple levels of difficulty. On top of that, ChatGPT can remember what a user has told it before, which sets it apart from other A.I. chatbots.
However, ChatGPT isn’t perfect, by any means. The way it responds to users’ inquiries — by making possible guesses about which bits of text belong together in a sequence, based on a statistical model trained on billions of examples of text pulled from all over the internet-makes it likely to give wrong answers, even to seemingly simple math problems. Plus, unlike Google, ChatGPT doesn’t crawl the web for information on current events, and its knowledge is restricted to things it learned before 2021, making some of its answers feel outdated.
Despite its existing flaws, ChatGPT, from my perspective, is a useful tool — a tool that is already being compared to the iPhone in terms of its potential impact on society. ChatGPT isn’t yet OpenAI’s best A.I. model. I think I won’t be surprised again by GPT-4, the company’s next large language model, which is rumored to be coming out sometime next year.
32.What do the underlined words “with a splash” mean in the second paragraph?
A.Receiving negative reviews from its users.
B.Restricted only to a selected group of people.
C.Drawing a great deal of interest and attention.
D.Causing a wave of disturbance among people.
33.What is the most distinctive feature that makes ChatGPT stand out?
A.It can compose jokes and college-level articles.
B.It can do well in narrow and well-defined tasks.
C.It can recall what has been told to it previously.
D.It can interpret more difficult scientific concepts.
34.What can we learn about ChatGPT from paragraph 4?
A.It generates responses with the help of a statistical model.
B.It fails to refer to prior knowledge it acquired before 2021.
C.It can sometimes surf the internet for up-to-date information.
D.It has no difficulty in answering complicated math problems.
35.What’s the author’s attitude towards ChatGPT?
A.Positive and hopeful. B.Negative and fearful.
C.Neutral and conservative. D.Mixed and Skeptical.
【答案】32.C 33.C 34.A 35.A
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了ChatGPT这一人工智能聊天机器人的特点、优势、不足以及作者对其未来发展的积极态度。
32.词句猜测题。根据划线短语下文“In five days, more than a million people signed up to test it and hundreds of screenshots of ChatGPT conversations went viral on Twitter. (一炮而红。五天内,超过一百万人注册测试,数百张ChatGPT对话截图在推特上疯传)”可推知,划线短语“with a splash”意为“引起巨大关注和兴趣”。故选C。
33.推理判断题。根据文章第三段“While a few have gotten good at doing narrow and well-defined tasks, like writing marketing copy, they don’t function well when taken outside their comfort zones. (虽然有些擅长完成狭窄而明确的任务,比如写营销文案,但当他们走出舒适区时,他们的表现并不好)”以及“On top of that, ChatGPT can remember what a user has told it before, which sets it apart from other A. I. chatbots. (此外,ChatGPT能记住用户之前告诉它的内容,这使其与其他AI聊天机器人区别开来)”可推知,其最显著的特点是记忆用户对话历史,其他选项虽然正确,但并非最独特的特征。故选C。
34.推理判断题。根据文章第四段“ The way it responds to users’ inquiries — by making possible guesses about which bits of text belong together in a sequence (它通过基于数十亿文本样本训练的统计模型,猜测文本片段如何组合来响应用户查询)”可推知,其回答依赖统计模型生成。故选A。
35.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Despite its existing flaws, ChatGPT, from my perspective, is a useful tool (尽管存在缺陷,我认为ChatGPT是一个有用的工具)”和作者对其社会潜力的肯定(类比iPhone)以及“which is rumored to be coming out sometime next year (据传将于明年某个时候推出)”可推知,作者态度是积极且充满希望的。故选A。

How to Develop a Sense of Humor
A good sense of humor can make you the life of the party and help you go easier on yourself. Using different forms of tricks, you’ll have people around you roaring with laughter.
Learn to tell the sort of jokes you find funny. Once you’ve learned what kind of humor you enjoy, try including it in your conversations with friends. Try to tell your jokes as if commenting on the weather. 36
Have fun. 37 Remember, you are more than your humor. Try to find the world engaging, new, and strange. This will help improve your overall mood and make it easier for you to find humor in things if you allow yourself to play. So get out there and have fun with yourself!
38 If the way you tell a story goes a long way toward making it funny, practice it as you talk. Smile and laugh along with everyone. If you’re telling a shocking part of the story, widen your eyes and lean forward for a dramatic effect. You can also use your hands to be more expressive and get a laugh on others, too.
Joke kindly and carefully. 39 If you are making fun of a friend, try to joke about a positive aspect of that person rather than a weakness. If a colleague is always on time, say you set your watch by him or her. If your children write a good paper for school, say they’ll be promoted to a teacher next. 40
A.Surround yourself with funny people.
B.Use your body language to be more engaging.
C.Remember, humor should brighten days, not darken them.
D.Jokes about friends should not show them in a negative way.

第二节 (满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头请续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Jack had just moved to a new town with his parents and he was new at Emerson School. He was really worried because he had a speech (演讲) problem. In the past, his old classmates often laughed at him because of it.
Luckily, Katherine, Jack’s science teacher in the new school, quickly saw why Jack was so nervous and didn’t want to speak in class. She decided to help him. Whenever Jack had trouble speaking, this kind teacher would give him an encouraging smile and say, “You are so great!” The teacher hoped that with her encouragement, Jack could get the confidence. But unfortunately, all her efforts didn’t work.
One day in class, Katherine said that every student had to stand in front of the class and give their answer to a question in their own special way. When Jack heard this, that familiar fear and worry came back. He kept thinking about how he could stand in front of his classmates and explain his answer clearly. He was also worried that his classmates would laugh at his speech problem again. He just sat there, watching his classmates go up to the front one by one. Most of them did their speech smoothly (顺利地) and went back to their seats with big smiles. But Jack was so nervous while waiting for his turn to come (轮到他), it felt like he was sitting on needles (针).
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Finally, his turn came.

When Jack finished his speech, everyone in the room started to clap(鼓掌).
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Finally, his turn came. Jack’s knees were knocking as he walked to the front. His mind went blank for a moment, but then he remembered Katherine’s countless kind words. He forced himself to focus on the task. As he started speaking, his voice was barely above a whisper, yet he continued. Midway, he stuttered on a complex term, and his face flushed. But glancing at Katherine’s unwavering support, he found the strength to correct himself. Slowly, his voice grew louder and steadier.
When Jack finished his speech, everyone in the room started to clap. Tears welled up in Jack’s eyes. He couldn’t believe it; the applause was deafening. His classmates rushed forward to pat his back and offer words of praise. Katherine came up and gave him a big hug, whispering, “You surpassed yourself, Jack.” From that day, Jack actively participated in class. Whenever he felt scared, he’d recall that moment of triumph. Throughout the past year, we followed some interesting new inventions in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) . Here is a look back at some notable AI developments in 2022. Meta’s speech-to-speech translation
Tool to interpret pig emotions

27.Which word can best describe Pappula?
A.Honest. B.Caring. C.Polite. D.Proud.

C.To analyse the reason. D.To introduce background information.
A.Stop Using Single-use Plastics
B.Reusing Single-use Plastics Is Harmful

E.A casual delivery is often the funniest part of an unusual comment.

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
