Abby Jaramillo, along with another teacher, started Urban Sprouts, a school garden program at four schools where students don’t have much money. Abby saw that the kids in these schools couldn’t get fresh food and green spaces. Fast food places were everywhere. The students often came to school with bags of snacks and big bottles of soft drinks. They thought vegetables tasted terrible. Digging in the soil (土壤) and picking leaves might seem like hard jobs for them. Abby wanted to change this. She started the Urban Sprouts program.
In the Urban Sprouts classes at two middle schools and two high schools, students do all kinds of hands-on things. They test the soil to see what it’s made of. They cut open flowers and seeds (种子) to learn about them. They taste fresh or dried fruits and vegetables. And of course, they work in the garden. A few times a year, they even cook the vegetables they grow. Sometimes, they make salads for everyone in their schools.
A study of the program showed that it’s really working. Students are eating more vegetables now. Some students said they went home and talked to their parents, and their families are eating differently because of it.
Abby says the program has advantages that go beyond just eating better. Some students like gardening so much that they take seeds home to start their own little vegetable gardens. In addition, for Abby’s special education students, who often have trouble controlling their emotions (情绪), working in the garden helps them calm down. “They get outside, and they feel successful,” she says.

A. Children’s parents distrusted her. B. Students had little time for her classes.
C. Some children disliked garden work. D. Schools had few spaces for gardening.

Two years ago, I worked in a rural police station, with the job of registering or canceling household registrations (户籍).

When we arrived, we were warmly welcomed. First, we cleaned their rooms and did some washing for them. Then, we sat together and had heart-to-heart talks. We listened to their life stories and shared ours. We also taught them some simple hand-making skills. Everyone had a great time.

Two years ago, I worked in a rural police station, with the job of registering or canceling household registrations (户籍).
One cloudy morning, when I was working as usual, a girl who was about 10 years old, walked in slowly. After walking up to my workstation, she gave me an ID card of a mid-aged man. She told me the man in the ID card was her father who had died last week. She came to cancel her father’s household registration. I checked the information quickly and did it. When I reached for the ID card to process the cancellation, she stopped me timidly (胆怯地).
She told me she was the only child of her parents. Her mother left five years ago, and so did her father last week. She asked if I could give back the ID card so that she could see him when she missed her father. Her words shocked me, so I did as she said after cutting off the lower right corner of the ID card. She thanked me. I hugged her, and my eyes were full of tears. At that moment, I could feel the deep love this girl had for her father.
