W: But society has changed so much over the past 100 years, and many of the big challenges we’re facing today are completely new. Shouldn’t we be focusing on the present?

W: I guess so…
M: By studying the past, we’re able to make better decisions for the future.
W: That’s true. We shouldn’t get stuck in the past, but I guess it can help guide us forward.

As long-time viewers will know, we’ve visited Legoland theme parks everywhere from Germany to Japan. But LEGO House was a totally new experience. We bought timed entry tickets to the “Experience Zones”. The Red Zone is where we can build anything we want. Here’s Oscar creating his own castle. Since he’s only five, I was worried that he might get bored, but this kept him busy for ages! The Blue Zone has car racing and really fun digital games to play. Our eldest, Liam, really enjoyed this zone. The middle child, Chloe, preferred the Yellow Zone, where she can create animals and flowers, and bring them to life on a digital dance stage! Lunch at the MINI CHEF restaurant was a totally unique experience. We had to “build” our order using LEGO bricks, which was so fun. The food itself was surprisingly delicious, and our order was delivered by the cutest LEGO robots! Tomorrow, we’re off to the original Legoland theme park. We’d love to take you with us, so don’t forget to subscribe!

Like many PhD. students, I have numerous sources of stress. I tried to lower levels of the stress hormone by following the conventional wisdom: get some exercise, get enough sleep, maintain a healthy work-life balance. But following this prescription only works during the least stressful times.
I’m a lifelong novelty seeker. What I enjoyed included hitchhiking across the state and going for a bungee jumping. This penchant served me well in my second year of graduate school. As the pressure to pass my qualifying exam was mounting, I needed some kind of release. So, I invited one of my fellow graduate students to come swimming with me — in a river, in the middle of winter.
The moment I plunged into the freezing water I immediately felt a surge of energy and fear. Quickly coming back the surface, I gulped cold air and slowly got into amore focused state. I stayed in the water as long as I could, my skin burning from the cold. My friend and I agreed it was a real rush and that we would come back the next weekend.
And so it became our weekly routine. Although the energizing rush of adrenaline (肾上腺素) was the initial pleasure, I found the plunge had other unexpected benefits, too. Stimulating my sympathetic nervous system in the short term had a comforting effect in the long term. I noticed I was approaching my work with a calmer state of mind and taking the failures easier.
The seasons changed and the water was no longer cold, but the stresses of graduate school remained. I began to explore other types of activities that would have the same effects I had felt from the cold winter swims. Among my adrenaline-inducing activities now are mountain biking, rock climbing, or listening to metal music on my walk to work. If it is really necessary, merely taking a cold shower can do the trick. Long after I return to the lab, my focused, energetic mindset persists.
Regular adrenaline-inducing activities can be an invaluable tool. After long hours of lab work, it is hard to motivate myself to sit down to write my thesis. So before I get started, I should probably take a cold shower for my healthy dose of adrenaline.
24. What does the underlined word penchant probably mean?
A. Thought. B. Fondness. C. Prescription. D. Combination.
25. What sport functions best to energize the rush of adrenaline?
A. Road biking. B. Pool swimming. C. Park jogging. D. Bungee jumping.
26. Which of the following best describes adrenaline-inducing activities?
A. Intense. B. Changeable. C. Relaxing. D. Innovative.
27. Which of the following can be the best title?
A. Adrenaline, fuel of soul B. Adventure, door to happiness
C. Hormone, wing of growth D. Exercise, recipe for success
B 25. D 26. A 27. A
根据划线词上文“I’m a lifelong novelty seeker. What I enjoyed included hitchhiking across the state and going for a bungee jumping.(我是个永远乐于尝试新事物的人。我曾喜欢的事情包括徒步穿越整个州以及尝试蹦极运动)”可知,此处指作者爱好尝试蹦极运动。故划线词意思是“爱好”。故选B。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“What I enjoyed included hitchhiking across the state and going for a bungee jumping.(我曾喜欢的事情包括徒步穿越整个州以及尝试蹦极运动)”以及第三段中的“ And so it became our weekly routine. Although the energizing rush of adrenaline ( 肾上腺素 ) was the initial pleasure, I found the plunge had other unexpected benefits, too. Stimulating my sympathetic nervous system in the short term had a comforting effect in the long term. (因此,这成为了我们每周的固定活动。虽然最初让我感到愉悦的是肾上腺素激增带来的兴奋感,但我也意外地发现,这种冷水浸泡还有其他意想不到的好处。短期内对交感神经系统的刺激,在长期来看反而带来了令人安心的效果。)”可知,具有刺激性的运动会激发肾上腺素的分泌,由此可知,缆绳蹦极属于最能激发人体内肾上腺素的分泌。故选D。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Although the energizing rush of adrenaline (肾上腺素) was the initial pleasure, I found the plunge had other unexpected benefits, too.(虽然肾上腺素带来的兴奋感是最初的愉悦,但我发现这种下水的体验还有其他意想不到的好处)”可知,激发肾上腺素分泌的活动是剧烈的。故选A。
根据最后一段“Regular adrenaline-inducing activities can be an invaluable tool. After long hours of lab work, it is hard to motivate myself to sit down to write my thesis. So before I get started, I should probably take a cold shower for my healthy dose of adrenaline.(经常进行能刺激肾上腺素分泌的活动是一种非常宝贵的工具。在长时间的实验室工作之后,很难让自己坐下来撰写论文。所以在开始之前,我或许应该冲个冷水澡,让自己获得适量的肾上腺素刺激)”可知,A选项“肾上腺素,灵魂的燃料”最符合文章标题。故选A。

Research shows that middle-aged women do more exercise than their daughters. A study conducted by Vitality UK polled 6,000 pairs of mothers (aged 45-59) and daughters (aged 20-29) on how often they exercised including walking, gym classes or team sports. 27% of the mothers said they exercised at least five times a week, compared with only 19% of their daughters.
Meanwhile 78% daughters didn’t participate in sport because they feared being judged on their figures. Besides, 70% of them said that poor mental health such as depression or anxiety stopped them from exercising.
The motivations for exercise also changed as women aged. Nearly half of the daughter group said that weight management was their main reason to exercise while the percentage was less than 30% in the mother group. Mothers were more motivated by preventing heart disease and maintaining muscle mass.
Overall, the study showed that women were less active at every stage of life — with only one in four meeting recommended physical activity guidelines. Stephanie Hilborn, the chief executive of Women in Sport, said, “A lot need to be done to boost women’s physical activity, such as allowing them enough time and providing more help. Experts from Vitality said the sports industry as well as workplaces should promote women’s fitness by providing safer outdoor spaces and flexible working hours, and encouraging ‘exercise snacks’ throughout the day, such as lunchtime yoga, or walking meetings. Meanwhile the National Health Service is being urged to prescribe exercise classes to women, and to ensure they are not given outdated guidance, like discouraging exercise at pregnancy stage”.
“Our cultural norm that women prioritize caregiving over self-care should also be changed. But a shift in how women perceive exercise should top our agenda: to move the focus away from weight loss to health improvement,” Hilborn stressed.
28. What most likely prevented young women engaging in sports?
A. Heart disease. B. Figure anxiety.
C. Weight problem. D. Psychology issue.
29. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. Requirements of activity guidelines.
B. Reasons for women’s poor health.
C. Significance of regular exercise.
D. Suggestions to promote women’s fitness.
30. Which of the following can be called “exercise snacks”?
A. Wall sits. B. Weight lift. C. City walk. D. Street dance.
31. According to Hilborn, what is the most urgent matter?
A. Time guarantee. B. Motivation change.
C. Facility improvement. D. Cultural identity.
B 29. D 30. A 31. B
根据第二段“Meanwhile 78% daughters didn’t participate in sport because they feared being judged on their figures.(与此同时,78%女儿不参加体育运动,因为她们害怕别人对她们的身材评头论足。)”
根据第四段“A lot need to be done to boost women’s physical activity, such as allowing them enough time and providing more help. Experts from Vitality said the sports industry as well as workplaces should promote women’s fitness by providing safer outdoor spaces and flexible working hours, and encouraging ‘exercise snacks’ throughout the day, such as lunchtime yoga, or walking meetings. Meanwhile the National Health Service is being urged to prescribe exercise classes to women, and to ensure they are not given outdated guidance, like discouraging exercise at pregnancy stage(要促进女性的体育活动,还有很多事情要做,比如给她们足够的时间,提供更多的帮助。来自Vitality的专家表示,体育产业和工作场所都应该通过提供更安全的户外空间和灵活的工作时间来促进女性的健康,并鼓励全天的“碎片化运动”,比如午餐瑜伽或步行会议。与此同时,英国国民健康服务体系被敦促为女性开设运动课程,并确保她们没有得到过时的指导,比如不鼓励怀孕期间的运动)”可知,第4段主要讲促进女性健身的建议。故选D。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Experts from Vitality said the sports industry as well as workplaces should promote women’s fitness by providing safer outdoor spaces and flexible working hours, and encouraging ‘exercise snacks’ throughout the day, such as lunchtime yoga, or walking meetings.(Vitality 公司的专家表示,体育行业以及职场应通过以下方式促进女性健康:提供更安全的户外活动空间、推行弹性工作制,并鼓励全天开展“碎片化运动”(即‘exercise snacks’),例如午间瑜伽或步行会议。)”
根据最后一段“But a shift in how women perceive exercise should top our agenda: to move the focus away from weight loss to health improvement(但改变女性对运动的看法应该是我们的首要任务:把重点从减肥转移到改善健康上)”可知,最紧急的事情是动机的变化。故选B。
D
Our common sense is that professional excellence requires formal training, but excellence in the rest of life does not. Work demands discipline and training; leisure is easy and enjoyable and comes naturally.
When our work is most demanding, we typically define leisure as its opposite: complete inactivity. For example, when a burned-out 51-year-old CEO of a $68 billion investment firm abruptly quit his job in 2022, he explained to reporters what he planned to do next: “I just want to go sit at the beach and do nothing.” Even if we’re not finding our work so tiring as his, we still talk about taking a break from work, which allows us to reenergize — in order to work more and better. Either way, we’re defining leisure in relation to work.
I reject this whole way of thinking. Leisure is a valuable, constructive part of life, and we misunderstand leisure when we define it as work’s opposite. We may think that the best way to get happier is, like the CEO, to “go sit at the beach and do nothing.” But researchers have found that this kind of do-nothing leisure, including vacation travel, provides only minor, temporary boosts of happiness. What gives us more sustained well-being are pursuits involving social engagement, personal reflection, and outdoor activities.
As a professor, I want everything I do to be generative, instead of wasting a minute on fruitless pursuits. Leisure is not straightforward or easy. I’d like to use my nonwork activities, as much as my work ones, to become a wiser, happier, more effective person. We must treat leisure with every bit as much seriousness as we do our careers. When we understand and practice leisure properly, we can achieve our best selves — and even our capacity to transform society for the better.
The point here is that just as we should be excellent at our jobs, we should become excellent at leisure. Doing leisure well will generate the sort of growth in our well-being that work cannot provide. If you don’t do leisure well, you will never find life’s full meaning.
32. Why does the author mention common sense at the beginning?
A. To make a comparison. B. To introduce a concept.
C. To present an example. D. To lead in an argument.
33. What does the example of the CEO convey?
A. People should retire when earning enough. B. People should change attitudes towards work.
C. People tend to connect leisure with work. D. People tend to make future plans in advance.
34. According to researchers, what contributes to continuous well-being?
A. Sunbathing on the beach. B. Aimlessly wandering.
C. Community service. D. Playing video games.
35. What is the author’s opinion about leisure?
A. Leisure is opposite to work. B. Leisure is a state of inactivity.
C. Leisure means escaping work temporarily. D. Leisure deserves to be treated seriously.
D 33. C 34. C 35. D

根据第一段“Our common sense is that professional excellence requires formal training, but excellence in the rest of life does not. Work demands discipline and training; leisure is easy and enjoyable and comes naturally.(我们的常识认为,专业上的卓越需要接受正规训练,但在生活的其他方面,卓越并非如此。工作需要纪律和训练;而休闲则是轻松、愉悦且自然而然的)”结合下文对“认真对待休闲”的讨论可知,作者在开头处提及“常识”这一概念是为了引入论点。故选D。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“For example, when a burned-out 51-year-old CEO of a $68 billion investment firm abruptly quit his job in 2022, he explained to reporters what he planned to do next: “I just want to go sit at the beach and do nothing.” Even if we’re not finding our work so tiring as his, we still talk about taking a break from work, which allows us to reenergize — in order to work more and better. Either way, we’re defining leisure in relation to work.(例如,2022 年,一位 51 岁、管理着一家价值 680 亿美元投资公司的高管突然辞职。他向媒体解释了自己的下一步计划:“我只是想去海滩上坐坐,什么都不做。”即便我们并不像他那样觉得工作如此令人疲惫,我们仍然会谈论要暂时放下工作,这样能让我们重新充满活力——以便能更高效地工作。不管怎样,我们都是在将休闲与工作联系起来来定义休闲的)”可知,这位首席执行官的例子说明人们往往会将休闲与工作联系在一起。故选C。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“What gives us more sustained well-being are pursuits involving social engagement, personal reflection, and outdoor activities.(能给我们带来更持久幸福感的,是那些涉及社交互动、个人反思以及户外活动的追求)”推知,社区服务可以促持续的幸福感。
根据最后一段“The point here is that just as we should be excellent at our jobs, we should become excellent at leisure. Doing leisure well will generate the sort of growth in our well-being that work cannot provide. If you don’t do leisure well, you will never find life’s full meaning.(重点是,就像我们应该在工作中表现出色一样,我们也应该在休闲中表现出色做好休闲活动将会带来那种工作无法提供的幸福感的增长。如果你不能做好休闲活动,你就永远无法找到生活的全部意义)”推知,作者认为休闲理应得到应有的重视。故选D。

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Ten years ago I became fascinated by the question: why are some work teams more productive and innovative than others? That began a multi-year research program. We surveyed teams over time — some based in the UK, others spanning other countries. We observed how team members behaved. ____36____ We found productive and innovative teams are “hot spots” of energy. Their magic contains three factors.
____37____ It may be a goal or a vision of the future that was so exciting that it really fuels the energy of the team. They all pulled together. Yet this alone is not sufficient. Some of the dull and negative teams also had inspiring objectives, but the culture of the team was such that no one was prepared to work together, they were overwhelmed with competition, fear and mistrust.
In contrast, the more productive teams have a culture of co-operation and trust. Don’t get me wrong. These were not simple-minded teams with everyone agreeing with each other. F 37. A 38. D 39. G 40. B
前文“We observed how team members behaved. (我们观察了团队成员的行为表现)”提到研究团队的行为,后文“We found productive and innovative teams are “hot spots” of energy. (我们发现,高效且富有创新力的团队是能量的“热点”)”提到研究发现,此处需要一个过渡句说明研究方法,因此F项“And we measured the flows of information within and between the teams. (我们测量了团队内部及团队之间的信息流动)”符合语境,介绍数据收集方式,与研究过程逻辑连贯。故选F。
【37题详解】
后文“It may be a goal or a vision of the future that was so exciting that it really fuels the energy of the team. They all pulled together. (这可能是一个激动人心的目的或未来愿景,它真正激发了团队的活力,让所有成员齐心协力)”提到目的或愿景能激发团队能量,此处位于段首,是段落主旨句,应该与团队目标相关,因此A项“Productive teams have a motivating aim. (高效团队有一个激励性的目标)”符合语境,契合后文内容,其中的a motivating aim是后文It指代的对象。故选A。
前文“In fact, the level of disagreement within both the under-performing and the high-performing teams was often the same. (事实上,表现不佳的团队和表现好的团队内部的分歧程度往往不相上下)”提到两种团队内部分歧水平相同,后文“Those in the hot spots teams were more likely to discuss these areas of conflict openly, to understand the perspective of the other, and work together to resolve these conflicts. (那些高效团队中的成员更倾向于公开讨论冲突点,理解对方的立场,并共同努力解决这些分歧)”说明表现好的团队能很好地处理冲突,此处应点明两种团队的差异在于处理冲突的方式,因此D项“What distinguished them was how they handled these conflicts. (区别在于他们如何处理这些冲突)”符合语境,点明核心差异,承前启后,其中的conflicts和前文的disagreement呼应。故选D。
【39题详解】
前文“In our everyday lives we find it easy to work with colleagues who have similar experiences and viewpoints to us. We have so much in common that our interactions go smoothly. (在日常生活中,我们很容易与那些经历和观点相似的同事共事。彼此间如此多的共同点让我们的合作顺畅无阻)”描述与相似同事合作的便利性,后文“We are faced with new and rapidly changing situations where we have limited shared understanding of what to do. (我们面临着瞬息万变的新情况,却对应对之策缺乏共识)”提到环境变化时缺乏共识,此处需要一个转折句,因此G项“However, the disadvantage becomes apparent when circumstances change. (然而,当环境变化时,这种劣势就显现出来)”符合语境,说明与相似同事合作有其劣势,和前文构成转折。故选G。
【40题详解】
前文“This is when diversity of thinking matters. Now there are people with other ways of looking at the world, other experiences and other skills. (这正是思维多样性至关重要的时刻。现在有些人用不同的方式看待世界,有不同的经历和技能)”提到其他视角、经历和技能的人,此处需总结多样性的价值,因此B项“These diverse mindsets will generate new solutions. (这些多样化的思维方式将催生新的解决方案)”符合语境,指出多样性将带来解决方案,承接前文。故选B。

Three years ago, I was invited to join a voluntary activity, where volunteers learned to crochet (钩针编织) blankets that would be donated to a local Charity Center by New Year’s Day. I wanted to participate but I knew nothing about how to crochet. Luckily, a few of the ladies went together and taught me. That’s all I needed. I learned that granny stitch (针脚) and before long I had a blanket made. I was so proud of my little accomplishment and it seemed so important that I made quite a few more that same year. I even included a note in each blanket, as a form of encouragement, which read: Every day is anew chance to embrace life!
Then it was a Saturday afternoon. I was engaged in another volunteer task when my doorbell rang. I hurried to answer it. To my surprise and delight, there stood Karen Sharp, who had been one of my very best friends ever since elementary school. Karen and her family had to move away a few years ago because her husband Jim lost his job. Excitedly, I guided Karen into the kitchen, where I poured a cup of tea for both of us and the conversation began.
To my delight, Karen seemed to be calm, rested and, most of all, self-assured, which were a few qualities that she had seemed to lose during the last few months before they moved away. I wondered what had caused the positive change.
We talked about our happy time in the past. Karen told me that they had a financial problem and life was really tough after they moved away. Besides, she fell ill after and became more and more depressed. And on New Year’s Day, they received a pastel-colored package from the community, containing a hand-crocheted blanket with a little note in it, something really encouraging. Karen’s eyes welled up as she pulled out a folded note from her purse.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
I recognized my note at once.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Inspired, Karen decided to offer her own contribution.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
I recognized my note at once. Staring at the familiar words, I felt a mix of shock and warmth spreading through me. I told Karen that it was I who made the blanket and wrote the note as part of a volunteer activity. Karen hugged me tightly, tears streaming down her face. She said that those words had been like a ray of sunshine in her darkest days, giving her the strength to fight against depression and the courage to face difficulties. That note had convinced her that every day was indeed a new chance, and she gradually regained her hope for life.
Inspired, Karen decided to offer her own contribution. She asked me to teach her how to crochet so that she could make blankets for others in need too. From then on, we spent a lot of time together, with me patiently showing her different stitches and techniques. Karen learned quickly and soon became proficient. She also started writing encouraging notes to accompany the blankets. Together, we made many more blankets and sent them to various charity centers. Our small act of kindness continued to spread warmth and hope, just like the note that had once changed Karen’s life.
Possible version two:
I recognized my note at once. A wave of emotion washed over me as I gently took the familiar slip of paper from her hand. Those were my words, written with hope and care, never knowing who would receive them. And now they seemed to carry a deeper meaning. Karen’s eyes glistened with tears as she explained how that small, kind gesture had lifted her spirits during such a dark time. It felt surreal to know that something so small, something I had made with love, had traveled through life’s twists and turns to find someone I once held so close. We hugged tightly, no words needed, just the warmth of understanding between old friends.
Inspired, Karen decided to offer her own contribution. She asked me to teach her how to crochet, just as those kind ladies had once taught me. “I want to pass on the kindness I received,” she said, her voice filled with determination. Every week, we met to crochet, and with each stitch, she grew stronger — more confident, more joyful. By the next winter, she had made several blankets, each with her own heartfelt note attached inside. Hand in hand, we delivered them to people in need. I watched Karen transform, realizing that a simple act of love can ripple through lives and come full circle in the most unexpected, beautiful ways.

The moment I plunged into the freezing water, I immediately felt a surge of energy and fear.
C
A Time guarantee. B. Motivation change.
C. Facility improvement. D. Cultural identity.
32 Why does the author mention common sense at the beginning?
A To make a comparison.
In fact, the level of disagreement within both the under-performing and the high-performing teams was often the same. ____38____ Those in the hot spots teams were more likely to discuss these areas of conflict openly, to understand the perspective of the other, and work together to resolve these conflicts.
In our everyday lives we find it easy to work with colleagues who have similar experiences and viewpoints to us. We have so much in common that our interactions go smoothly. ____39____ We are faced with new and rapidly changing situations where we have limited shared understanding of what to do. As a result, we simply go back to old solutions. This is when diversity of thinking matters. Now there are people with other ways of looking at the world, other experiences and other skills. ____40____
A. Productive teams have a motivating aim.
B. These diverse mindsets will generate new solutions.
C. The difference lies in the source of their disagreements.
D. What distinguished them was how they handled these conflicts.
E. A unique culture is the key to a productive and innovative team.
F. And we measured the flows of information within and between the teams.
G. However, the disadvantage becomes apparent when circumstances change.
