Ancient Chinese painting, with a long history, developed from simple patterns to diverse styles across dynasties. Known for its precise techniques and detailed descriptions of nature, figures, and landscapes, it highlights the talents of Chinese artists.
Five Oxen
Five Oxen was painted by Han Huang from the Tang Dynasty. It shows five oxen (牛) in various postures, with their muscles and bones delicately illustrated, including the tiny hairs around their mouths and on their heads. It’s one of the earliest surviving paper paintings in China.
Travelers Among Mountains and Streams
Fan Kuan, a famous Song Dynasty landscape painter, created Travelers Among Mountains and Streams. Its power lies in showing man’s co-existence with nature. Now, new filmmaking techniques are employed to bring the painting to life.
A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains
Wang Ximeng, at just 18, created A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains, a huge 11-meter silk scroll (卷轴) painting. Using rare colors like malachite green and azurite blue, it vividly displays a peaceful and rich landscape. This great work also shows the painter’s deep respect for nature’s beauty.
Along the River During the Qingming Festival
Along the River During the Qingming Festival by Zhang Zeduan is set in Bianjing (now Kaifeng) during the 11th—12th centuries. The 5-meter-long scroll features over 800 people, animals, boats, and buildings, describing both rural and urban scenes. It has inspired modern works like the digital animation (动画) River of Wisdom.

I often wake up to my alarm after a short night and step out of bed to a day I’ve fought through countless times. I rush my morning routine and run to my car. My radio switches to my favorite song, but I have to listen to an audible book for an assignment due tomorrow.
When I get to school, I start with Spanish, my hardest class. Despite being around all year, I have no clue what’s going on. I then walk to my English class, in which I was stuck in the language rules. The assignments take much energy that my perfectionist nature is unable to take on in school, so I save them for later, most probably late at night.
This is my reality as a student with dyslexia, a learning disorder in reading and spelling: assignments that take three times as long as they’re meant to, late nights and early mornings to even slightly keep up with my classes.
I was told that Advanced Placement U. S. History would be my hardest class. But here, I am in my element. Despite being three assignments behind, I’m actively engaged. Yes, my passion for history heightens my focus, but my teacher’s willingness to work with me is what allows me to fly high.
Teachers need to offer alternative structures that make learning more accessible. I’ve had teachers who teach lecture-based classes where students are expected to take notes and listen. As a student with dyslexia, this doesn’t work. A fix for that is as simple as providing alternative resources: a slide show students can go back to after class, or perhaps even an activity that further plays with the concepts.
Now, many schools are shifting to approaches that meet the needs of all kids. However, advocacy work can still be done to support students with dyslexia. If school systems are willing to provide support and education by creating an accessible class structure from the start, students won’t be stuck into academic tracks that don’t push them to their full potential.
24. Why does the author have to do his homework late at night?
A. He is assigned extra homework.
B. He needs time to do it well enough.
C. He fails to manage his spare time.
D. He dislikes tasks related to languages.
25. What does the underlined part “in my element” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Burning the midnight oil.
B. Feeling like a fish in water.
C. Having butterflies in my stomach.
D. Biting off more than I can chew.
26. What does the author think of lecture-based classes?
A. Uninteresting. B. Convincing. C. Demanding. D. Rewarding.
27. What does the author advise schools to do for students?
A. Offer classes with alternatives.
B. Ask educational experts to give lectures.
C. Advocate out-of-class activities.
D. Get teachers trained in special education.

In today’s fast-paced world, joy can often feel hard to find. However, Zadie Smith offers a refreshing perspective on the concept of joy and its significance in our lives, in her essay Joy. Through a blend of personal anecdotes, literary references, and thought-provoking insights, Smith explores the complexities of joy and its relationship to happiness.
Smith explores the definition and perception of joy, distinguishing it from happiness, which originates from internal contentment rather than external circumstances. She finds joy in small pleasures of life, such as interactions with a child or observing daily routines. While society often views joy as short-lived or shallow, prioritizing grand achievements and material pursuits, Smith challenges this notion, arguing that joy in simple things significantly enhances our well-being.
One of the key aspects of Smith’s essay is her exploration of the role of literature in capturing and conveying joy. She claims that by immersing ourselves in the stories and experiences of others, we can broaden our horizons and find joy in the shared human experience. This insight emphasizes the importance of storytelling and the arts in fostering a sense of joy and connection in society.
Smith also digs into how identity shapes our understanding of joy, reflecting on her multicultural background and its influence on her views. She highlights how joy is often rooted in cultural legacy and individual experiences, emphasizing the value of embracing diverse identities.
Furthermore, Smith examines the role of community and social connections in fostering joy. She argues that joy is often connected with our relationships and the sense of belonging we get from them. Sharing laughter or celebrating together with others can make our joy stronger and build a sense of community.
Zadie Smith’s essay Joy offers an exploration of joy and its significance in our lives and encourages us to reevaluate our understanding of joy and seek its presence in our everyday lives.
28. How does Smith think people can find joy?
A. By appreciating ordinary moments of daily life.
B. By achieving great success and acquiring wealth.
C. By seeking contentment in external circumstances.
D. By focusing on personal growth through self-reflection.
29. What role does literature play in pursuing joy?
A. It provides entertainment for society. B. It distracts us from problems.
C. It promotes understanding of others. D. It helps us find life’s meaning.
30. What influences our view of joy according to Smith?
A. Financial status and social recognition. B. Cultural heritage and social relationships.
C. Professional success and personal value. D. Physical health and educational background.
31. What’s the text?
A. A commentary. B. A news report.
C. A book review. D. A personal narrative.

Scientists tell us that when a bird silently nods off, it may dream as its singing muscles make sudden quick movements. Could it be rehearsing (排练) in its sleep?
A substantial part of bird species are songbirds with specific brain regions dedicated to learning songs, according to University of Buenos Aires physicist Gabriel B. Mindlin. His research examines connections between birds’ dreams and song production — particularly in Zebra Finches, which often learn new sounds and songs, and in Great Kiskadees, which possess a limited born song learning capacity.
Scientists had previously observed sleeping birds making movements like lip-syncing (对口型). In earlier work, Mindlin and his colleagues implanted electrodes in two Zebra Finches; for a recent study in Chaos, they did the same for two Great Kiskadees. This let them record and compare neuron (神经元) and muscle activity in the sleeping birds.
When awake, Zebra Finches sing a well-regulated line of discontinuous notes. But their sleeping song movements are disjointed — “rather like a dream,” Mindlin says. A sleeping finch seems to silently practice a few “notes” and then add another, producing a pattern of muscle activity that reminds Mindlin “of learning a musical instrument.”
Such “rehearsing” appears far less likely in the non-learning Great Kiskadees, says study co-author Ana Amador, a neuroscientist also at the University of Buenos Aires. For the new research, the scientists ran this species’ sensor output through a mathematical model Mindlin recently developed to translate muscle movements into hearable sounds. The Kiskadees’ sleeping tune comprised quick, identical note syllables that sounded astonishingly loud and strong — “more like a nightmare than a dream,” Amador says.
University of Chicago neuroscientist Daniel Margoliash says the new results agree with his own observations of sleeping birds’ neurons. But he advises caution in describing this sleep activity as “dreaming.” Future work should more closely examine the sleep states the birds experience during this process, he says — including rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, a sleep stage that is closely associated with dreaming in other animals.
32. What does Mindlin’s study focus on?
A. Singing-learning ability of sleeping birds. B. Song production in birds’ dreams.
C. Birds’ brain operation during sleep. D. Mathematical model development.
33. What did Mindlin’s team do in a recent study?
A. They observed the movement of lip-syncing.
B. They analyzed the birds’ sleeping habits.
C. They tracked sleeping birds’ muscle responses.
D. They compared the singing skills of different birds.
34. How do the studied birds differ in sleep singing?
A. Frequency of electrode implants. B. Brain region activation patterns.
C. Song complexity and continuity. D. Preferred sleeping environments.
35. What can be the best title for this text?
A. The Mystery of Birds Singing B. Muscle Movements in Sleeping Birds
C. Sleeping Like Dreaming D. Musical Rehearsal in Birds’ Sleep

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Society has leaned into the convenience of throwaway culture, with repair skills being lost across generations in favor of simply replacing items when they break. 36 This situation is causing damage to our planet every day. That’s where Repair Cafes come in.
37 The concept is simple: visitors with broken items and volunteer repair specialists come together to repair and learn or just enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. The key purposes are to create opportunities for people from different cultures and generations to meet, learn, and share skills and to prevent stuff going to landfill.
When former journalist Martine Postma created the concept back in 2009, it was simply an experiment to see if the idea could work. 38 Fast-forward to today, the Repair Cafe Foundation reports over 2,200 active cafes in 46 countries worldwide.
These cafes create connection among people who have a genuine love for the planet. 39 A 2021 study found that repair cafes in the Netherlands alone prevented over 800 tons of waste landfill in just 2 years. And those are just the trackable results.
The repair cafes have seen a spotlight recently and the interest looks like it will only follow an upwards trend. 40 As generations are becoming more aware of the dangers the planet faces, people are seeking connection and ways to take care of it. And the repair cafes bring both in abundance. Looking forward, the future continues to look bright.
A. Luckily, the idea took off.
B. Thus, waste is on the rise.
C. So what exactly is a Repair Cafe?
D. They are making a real difference, too.
E. This trend is boosting profits for tourism.
F. She had tested the model in three countries.
G. The popularity signals a reason to be optimistic.

A Life-Saving Hero
My wife’s job took her out of town a lot and I needed some company. So one day, I went to the local animal-rescue center. The little cocker spaniel (可卡猎犬) trembling in a cage caught my eye right away. She had scared eyes and I could tell she longed to be picked up and hugged. I gently petted her soft fur, and to my surprise, she stopped shaking. That was that. I filled out the paperwork and took my new dog—Honey home.
I’d had her only a couple of weeks, but Honey and I quickly became close friends. She followed me like a shadow from the very first day. She loved sitting on my lap. We often went to the backyard, where I picked up a ball and threw it. I sat down to watch Honey race after the ball. We had great fun together.
That October morning last year I decided to take Honey with me while I ran some errands (差事). She jumped in and settled down on the passenger seat. I got behind the wheel and started the car. We lived in a remote area up in the hills outside San Rafael, surrounded by tall redwoods. We had to drive up the mountain at a low speed to get to our driveway, which was barely wide enough for one car and ended at a steep cliff.
I turned around and backed up slowly. Just then, a flash of sunlight blinded me. I put my hand up to protect my eyes. Suddenly, the car slipped in the soft soil and rolled down the valley. I heard a horrible crash. A giant branch plunged (扎进) through the roof and hit my leg. We landed upside down. I was stuck. I looked over to find Honey. She was still in the passenger seat. She seemed scared but was not hurt.

Today, I want to address a serious problem, plastic pollution in our oceans. Did you know that over eight million tons of plastic waste end up in oceans each year? Not only does IT harm marine life, but also affects human health through the food chain. For instance, sea turtles often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish and eat them, leading to deadly lock ages. Recently, some experts visited a coastal town and saw beers covered with plastic bottles and fishing nets. What surprised the most was that, even in remote areas, microplate tics were found in the sand and sea water. Despite this, many communities, like property cycling systems and public awareness remains low. So what can we do to change the situation? First, schools should ban single, use plastic bottle in cafeteria and replace them with reusable containers. Second, local governments are expected to invest more money in waste management facilities. Last but not least, each of us can join the clean coast of volunteer program to remove trash from beaches monthly. By the way, more details about the program, please log into the website. Dear Alice and classmates,
Our group believes AI will transform the job market rather than cause mass unemployment. Here are our reasons.
Firstly, while AI automates repetitive tasks like factory work, it creates emerging fields. For example, AI trainers and robot maintenance technicians – jobs unheard of a decade ago – are now in high demand. Secondly, human skills remain irreplaceable. Professions requiring creativity, emotional intelligence, or complex decision-making, such as teachers and psychologists, will always need human input. Admittedly, some low-skilled workers may face challenges. However, this can be addressed through vocational retraining programs.
Overall, we think AI won't cause mass unemployment. Let us embrace AI as a tool to upgrade our society, not a threat to our future. Thank you. (118 words)
I knew I had to do something to save us. I moved a bit to see if I could unpin myself from behind the wheel but ended up crying out in pain from my leg. I grabbed my cell phone and dialed 911, but I couldn't get a signal at the bottom of this valley. Then, I caught sight of Honey. “At least I could save her”, I thought to myself. Painfully, I reached over, picked her up and gently put her through the hole in the window and gave her a pat. “Go home, baby.” She jumped to the ground and raced up the side of the valley.
As I watched Honey fade out of my view, my thoughts started to wander off. Had Honey found her way home? Would she get help for me like what happened in the movies? With time ticking by my pulse was weakening. I was about to lose consciousness when I heard Honey barking and I saw a man walking towards me. He told me that he was the forest ranger here. It turned out that Honey made it to his house, ran in circles to grab his attention and successfully led him where I was. I was finally rescued. What a blessing to have Honey join in our family!
