One summer night, a boy felt himself lifted from bed by his father. Dazed with sleep, he saw stars
flashing across the heavens. "What is it?" the child whispered. "Shooting stars. They come every year in
August." Decades have passed, but I remember that night still, because I was the fortunate boy whos
father believed a new experience was more important than an unbroken night's sleep.
Some parents like my father have the gift of opening doors for their children. This art of adding
dimensions to a child brings the reward: the marvelous moment when the spark bursts into a flame tha
will burn brightly on its own one day. At a Golf Association tournament, a ten-year-old girl played
creditably. "How long have you been interested in golf?" someone asked. "I got it for my ninth birthday,'
she said. "Your father gave you a set of clubs?" "No," she said, "he gave me golf."
I have a friend, a psychiatrist, who says there are two types of people: those who think of life as
privilege and those who think of it as a problem. The first type is enthusiastie and energetic. The othe
type is suspicious and self-centered. And he adds,"Tell me about your childhood and I can tell you which
type you are likely to be."
The real purpose, then, of trying to open doors for children is to build eager and outgoing attitudes
which is the most valuable legacy we can pass on to the next generation. But why don't we work harder
at it? Probably because sometimes we don't have the awareness or the selflessness or the energy. And yet.
for those of us who care what becomes of our children. the challenge is alwavs there but the opportunities
also come repeatedly. Many years have passed since that night. And next year, when August comes with
its shooting stars. my son will be seven.

The male western tanager (唐纳雀) looks like a little flame, while females are less showy, a dusty
yellow. In the spring, they prepare to move thousands of miles to the Mountain West of Central America.
flying through grasslands, deserts, and occasionally, suburban yards
To fuel them on their lengthy journey, western tanagers fill up on insects and berries. But as globa
climate change causes spring to start earlier, birds such as western tanagers are arriving at their destination
after what's known as "green-up", when flowers begin blooming and insects emerge. According to a study
published in early March in the jounal PNAS, this kind of timing mismatch between migrants (迁移动
物) and their food sources, which is happening across North America, could have serious consequences
for migratory birds' survival. "In discussing climate change, we often focus on warming," says Scott Loss.
a co-author of the study. "But the length and timing of seasons -like when winter ends and spring begins
-are some of the most dramatic effects of climate change."
Loss and his colleagues used satellite imagery from 2oo2 to 2021 to calculate the average start of
spring green-up along the typical migration routes of 15o North American bird species, then compared
that timing with the current green-up. They found that spring is indeed beginning earlier along birds
migration routes. "By contrast, previous studies have mainly focused on songbirds in Eastern North
America." says Morgan Tingley, an ornithologist at UCLA, "but this new investigation shows that bird
species in the West and at different levels of the food web might be iust as yulnerable (弱的).'
"Part of it is knowing which species are vulnerable to various threats," Loss says. "This adds to the
knowledge about yulnerability of a wide range of bird species." And he hopes that the information wil
serve to highlight the urgent need to lower greenhouse-gas emissions as fast as possible. "It's really
important. if we can't address climate change immediately, to try to stop habitat loss as much as we can.'
28. What may pose a direct threat to western tanagers' survival?
A. Global warming.
B. The duration of changing seasons.
C. Loss of habitats due to human activities. D. Decreased access to foods during migration
29. What is unioue about the new study on birds like westerm tanagers?
A. It covers a wider geographic range.
B. It reveals the decline in bird populations.
C. It centers on the adaptation of bird species.
D. It ensures the existence of a timing mismatch

30. What does Loss suggest we do to safeguard migratory birds?
A. Lessen the effects of climate change.
B. Preserve ecosystems for bird species.
C. Address emissions and habitat loss.
D. Expand research on threats to birds
31. Where is the text most likely from?
A. A. popular science magazine
B. A bird-watching guidebook

D. A paper about wildlife conservation.
Beethoven is a giant of classical music. And the one with the most influence at least when it comes
to piano compositions. That's according to a study in the journal EPJ Data Science
If you're wondering how data analysis could determine something as abstract as cultural influence
it's worth remembering the great thing about music: it's the most mathematical of the art forms we actually
can deal with because a lot of it is symbolic. The music is written in symbols that are connected in time
Juyong Park is a theoretical physicist at the Korea Advanced institute of Science and Technology.
Park and his colleagues collected 9oo piano compositions by 19 composers covering the Baroque.
Classical and Romantie periods, from 17o0 to 1910. Then they used that mathematical quality to thei
advantage by dividing each composition into what they called "code words," a group of notes played at
the same time-in other words, a chord. They then compared each chord to the chords that came before
it. "Our computer model allows us to calculate the degree of shared melodies between past and future
works."said Park
The composer with top marks for novelty was Rachmaninoff. But when the researchers looked at
those chord transitions across all 19 composers, it was Beethoven who was most heavily borrowed from-
meaning, at least among the composers in this analysis, his influence was the largest
Their study comes with a couple caveats. The researchers only considered piano compositions in this
work-not orchestral works. And by only studying chord transitions, their conclusions wouldn't capture
artists who had influence in other ways. "It's well understood that Mozart's contribution to music mainly
comes from the musical forms that he devised. That was not very well captured by our mathematica
modeling."
32. How did the researchers conduct the study
A. They turned music compositions into written symbols
B. They looked at how chords differed from previous ones.
C They collected 9oo pieces from contemporary composer.
C. They calculated the number of chords in each music piece.
33. What can be known from the rescarch findings?
A. Beethoven was best at coming up with new chords
B. Beethoven borrowed heavily from another composer
C. Rachmaninoff's chords were most unlike previous ones
D. Rachmaninoff's chords were copied by future composers
34. What does he underlined word "caveats" probably mean?
C. costs
B. henefits
A.wamings
D. proofs
35. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?
A. Beethoven Regarded as a Giant of Classical Music
B. Similarity between Music and Math Investigated.
C. Beethoven's Major Musical Contribution Confirmed
D. Computer Analyses Confirm Beethoven's Influence.
