I was born in 1990-the year of the white horse. A girl born under this zodiac(生肖) is believed to have a wild, steed-like(骏马般的)spirit that will block her fortunes, bringing her family trouble. These beliefs were planted in my mind as a girl growing up in South Korea. I was repeatedly told to fight against my steed-like spirit and instead try being still, gentle, and quiet.
Actually, when I was young, I loved exploring the mountainous trails behind our house, examining the various soil layers in nearby fields, and generally running wild outdoors. I often returned home with soiled clothes.
In high school, I settled on a quiet career choice: I would become a lawyer. However, when I was accepted into a pre-law program, I found the courses boring. That’s when a teacher said, “You could always get a science degree, and go back into law. ”
I took her advice and landed in the United States to study geology(地质学). Shortly thereafter, though, culture shock set in. I was not ready for the intense physical requirements of my field courses. One 6-week summer course required strenuous(费劲的)hikes, camping in extreme heat, and heavy lifting. My cultural upbringing had discouraged such “wild” activities and I had never gone on extended hikes or camps before. But other women in my program were an inspiration. I saw beauty in their strength, and I wanted to be like them.
By the end of my undergraduate degree, I had fully accepted my love of being a tough girl. And I’d given up on the idea of becoming a lawyer. My parents didn’t quite know what to make of my adventurous field life. But they were supportive when I told them about the change in my career direction.
I’m now a postdoc with years of experience collecting samples in challenging field environments, and I’m thankful I resisted the cultural expectations placed on me. My wild, steed-like spirit wasn’t something to suppress(压制). Instead, it led me to a career that’s a perfect fit for me.

A. She was not used to doing strenuous activities.

What comes into your mind when you think of British food? Probably fish and chips, or a Sunday dinner of meat and two vegetables. But is British food really so uninteresting? Even though Britain has a reputation for less-than-impressive cuisine, it is producing more top class chefs who appear frequently on our television screens and whose recipe books frequently top the best seller lists.
It’s thanks to these TV chefs rather than any advertising campaign that Britons are turning away from meat-and-two-veg and ready-made meals and becoming more adventurous in their cooking habits. It is recently reported that the number of those sticking to a traditional diet is slowly declining and around half of Britain’s consumers would like to change or improve their cooking in some way. There has been a rise in the number of students applying for food courses at UK universities and colleges. It seems that TV programmes have helped change what people think about cooking.
According to a new study from market analysts, 1 in 5 Britons say that watching cookery programmes on TV has encouraged them to try different food. Almost one third say they now use a wider variety of ingredients (配料) than they used to, and just under 1 in 4 say they now buy better quality ingredients than before. One in four adults say that TV chefs have made them much more confident about expanding their cookery knowledge and skills, and young people are also getting more interested in cooking. The UK’s obsession (痴迷) with food is reflected through television scheduling. Cookery shows and documentaries about food are broadcast more often than before. With an increasing number of male chefs on TV, it’s no longer “uncool” for boys to like cooking.
8. What do people usually think of British food?
A. It is simple and plain. B. It is rich in nutrition.
C. It lacks authentic tastes. D. It deserves a high reputation.
9. Which best describes cookery programme on British TV?
A. Authoritative. B. Creative. C. Profitable. D. Influential.
10. Which is the percentage of the people using more diverse ingredients now?
A. 20%. B. 24%. C. 25%. D. 33%.
11. What might the author continue talking about?
A. The art of cooking in other countries. B. Male chefs on TV programmes.
C. Table manners in the UK. D. Studies of big eaters.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. D 11. B

【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的最后一句“With an increasing number of male chefs on TV, it’s no longer “uncool” for boys to like cooking.”(随着电视上出现越来越多男性厨师,男孩子喜欢烹饪不再是一件“不酷”的事了。)可知,接下来,文章应该具体介绍电视上的男性厨师,从而与上文形成语义连贯。故选B项。

Next time your pet dog start to pant (喘息) and pace (踱步) during a thunderstorm or when you have to leave for a day, you know separation anxiety is about to happen, and you should consider playing some music, but not just any music. According to a new study published in the journal of Physiology & Behavior, dogs prefer the sounds of reggae (雷盖音乐) or soft rock to any other type.
For the study, conducted by the Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA), researchers played five different types of music for shelter dogs. During the study, classical music, soft rock, reggae, pop music and Motown were played. While the dogs were listening, researchers took note of their heart rates, cortisol (皮质醇) levels and behavior.
It turns out that dogs are fans of Bob Marley, just like we do on our beach vacations, as results showed that dogs were less stressed while listening to soft rock or reggae. When they were listening to Motown, their stress levels were higher.
Based on the results of the study, researchers believe that dog owners can play reggae or soft rock music for their dogs during high stress situations. For dogs entering a shelter for the first time, the new surroundings will make them horrified causing them to bark or shake, and dogs living at home can be fearful of loud noises when their owners leave.
This study discovered shelter dogs listening to classical music were more relaxed, barking less and lying down more. Unfortunately, the study also found that by the seventh day of listening to classical music, the dogs returned to restlessness (躁动). This led the researchers to believe that “the animals were getting used to the music, or possibly getting bored. ” Those previous results are what led the researchers to try various types for the new study.
12. What did the researchers do in the study?
A. They measured dogs’ hearing. B. They studied dogs’ separation anxiety.
C. They researched into dogs’ living habits. D. They recorded dogs’ physical responses to music.
13. When listening to soft rock, the dogs _________.
A. got bored easily B. tended to be calmer
C. usually ate more food D. suffered a high stress level
14. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. Dogs’ favorite is classical music. B. Shelter dogs get annoyed more easily.
C. Music may affect dogs’ mood for limited time. D. Researchers are satisfied with the previous results.
15 What’s the text mainly about?
A. How dog lovers comfort their dogs. B. Advice about staying with a pet dog.
C. Why dogs should be free of anxiety. D. A study on music’s influence on dogs.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. D

During my sixth-grade year, my puberty (青春期) came and my voice started changing. Sometimes it’d crack (嗓音变粗). The first time it happened, I was embarrassed. I thought people around me might make fun of me since they didn’t have the same problem of uncontrolled voices.
After my first voice crack experience, trying to prevent it from happening again, I almost stopped talking. If I had to talk, I’d first clear my throat. Limiting my talking and clearing my voice before I spoke made my break and lunch experiences less stressful. Even when my voice did crack, only my closest friends would hear. My biggest fear was having a voice crack during class.
Unfortunately, one day the worst thing I had feared came. It was about halfway through the year when I was happy to have made it so long without a bad voice crack incident.
On the day it happened, everything was the same as always until I got into the classroom. When I walked through the door, the first thing I noticed was that we had a new teacher. For some classmates, seeing a new teacher was a great thing, but for me, it was a problem. Immediately started thinking about how the new teacher would need to take attendance. My previous teacher never had to. Since he already knew each student and where they sat, he just had everyone sit down in their seat, and marked the students whose seats were empty absent.
I started to panic. So many thoughts were running through my mind that I could not think straight. I calmed myself down by telling myself that I only had to say one word:“here”. Wasn’t it easy enough? Well, I thought so too until my name was called. I did my normal routine; I cleared my throat, took a breath, and said, “Here!” The only problem was that while saying this, I had the worst voice crack in the history of my voice cracks.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Before I knew it, the whole class turned to look at me. My face turned as red as a tomato. I felt extremely ashamed and wished I could just disappear from the classroom. Some classmates started to giggle, and I could hear whispers around me. The new teacher looked a bit surprised but quickly regained her composure. She calmly said, “It’s okay. Everyone goes through this during puberty.” Her words made me feel a little better, but I still couldn't shake off the embarrassment. I sat there, keeping my head down, and didn’t dare to look up for the rest of the class.
A break finally came, and I walked out of the classroom in a bad mood. I was still thinking about the embarrassing moment just now. Suddenly, I heard someone calling my name. It was the new teacher. She walked towards me with a kind smile on her face. “Don’t be too hard on yourself,” she said. “Voice cracks are just a normal part of growing up. Everyone will experience it. You don’t need to be so worried.” Her words were like a warm breeze, soothing my wounded pride. I felt grateful to her. From then on, I gradually became more confident and didn’t fear the voice crack as much.

D
15. What’s the text mainly about?
A. How dog lovers comfort their dogs. B. Advice about staying with a pet dog.
C. Why dogs should be free of anxiety. D. A study on music’s influence on dogs.
