Each fall, many trees turn red and orange, then begin to slowly lose their leaves. The ginkgo tree stands out. Its fan-shaped leaves are a bright golden yellow and often they’re still hung on the tree. That’s because ginkgo leaves fall all at once, sometimes in just one or two hours! How do ginkgoes know when to drop their leaves? That’s one of nature’s mysteries.
The ginkgo, which comes from the Japanese words, is among the oldest trees on earth. Scientists believe its leaves were a favorite snack for some ancient animals more than 200 million years ago! In both China and Japan, ginkgoes are considered as the symbol of long life.
Did you know that ginkgoes, in nature, are either male or female? You can tell the females because when they drop their leaves, they also lose their fruits.
You might think that people could avoid this problem by planting only male ginkgoes. But guess what? The amazing ginkgo can change from male to female! Being able to change from one to the other helps the ginkgo to live on.
Ginkgo leaves are used in Chinese medicines. In some areas of Asia, parts of the fruits are eaten. In Japan, the leaves have been used as bookmarks.

Hi, I’m David House, a writer to solve readers’ problems. I hope I can help with yours.
Hi David,
After reading a book named What Is Mathematics, I have become interested in math, and I even dream of being a mathematician (数学家) like Chen Xingshen. But the expected results are difficult to get. Every time I don’t do well in math, I feel sad and can’t help crying. What should I do?
Eason
Hi Eason,
It’s sad when we don’t do well in something we really want to be good at. But if we calm down, we may find that crying will do little. It’s actually more important to think about what can be done to get the results we want and how we can fix the problems.
In my opinion, much of math is about logical (逻辑的) thinking. Maybe you can try thinking in a logical way. It’s also about trial and error (不断摸索). Instead of being sad, learn from your mistakes. Think, “OK, where did I go wrong? What are my weak points and where do I need more practice?” Make a habit of practicing math out of school every day. Many online math programs are interesting and useful to help with your math. And I’m sure if you talk to your teacher, they can also help you.
You want to do math, which means you are motivated (有积极性的)! That’s already half the success.
David
66.What made Eason become interested in math?
A.A book about math. B.Advice from David. C.Help by Chen Xingshen.
67.Why did Eason write the letter?
A.He had difficulty in doing math well.
B.He wanted to be a top student in his class.
C.He would like to ask some math questions.
68.How does David feel about crying?
A.Harmful but important. B.Normal but useless. C.Necessary and helpful.
69.What does David suggest Eason do?
A.Ask classmates for help.B.Shut down online courses. C.Learn from the mistakes.
70.What does the last paragraph mean?
A.Eason has already done a good job.
B.Eason still has a long way to go.
C.Eason should have more motivation.

Huang Xuhua, the main designer of China’s first-generation nuclear submarines (核潜艇), passed away on February 6th, 2025, in Wuhan, Hubei. Huang was born in March 1926 in a doctor’s family in Guangdong. Growing up during the war, Huang entered Shanghai Jiao Tong University to study shipbuilding. He expected to use his knowledge to protect the country. After graduating in 1949, he joined the Communist Party of China and started his work in China’s shipbuilding industry.
Huang began working on the top-secret “09 Project” in 1958 to develop China’s first nuclear submarine and became one of its leading scientists. When he joined the project, China had no basic conditions for this high-tech work. The researchers knew nothing about it, and other countries kept the technology secret. Huang and his team worked hard to make it. In 1970, they built China’s first nuclear-powered submarine—Type 091. China became the fifth country to have one. While some media called him “the father of China’s nuclear submarines,” Huang said, “China’s nuclear submarines were the result of the teamwork efforts. I was simply doing my duty.”
▲ From 2017 to 2020, he was awarded national-level honors three times by President Xi Jinping. He cared a lot about the future of science and technology in China, as well as the growth of young people. He donated over 20 million yuan to support scientific research, education, and the spread of scientific knowledge. He spent his whole life developing China’s nuclear submarine industry and strengthening national defense (国防), which encourages us to try our best to make the country stronger.
“We are deeply sorry for his passing. But we must tell our children about Huang’s story, helping them remember history and inspiring (激励) them to fight for our country,” said Mr Wang, who came to mourn (哀悼) Huang with his children.

E-waste means old electronics like computers, phones, and TVs that people throw away. When new electronics come out, many old ones are thrown away. These old electronics have harmful materials inside. They can hurt the environment if they get into the ground or water.
Electronics need special metals that are hard to find. Getting these metals from the earth can cause a lot of pollution. As we make more electronics, these metals become even harder to find. However, we can recycle these metals from old electronics instead of digging for new ones.
A group called WEEE is trying to show how serious the e-waste problem is. WEEE says thrown-away e-waste like rare (稀有的) metals is worth $57 billion each year. Also, UN researchers studied “invisible” e-waste, which people don’t notice much. They found that 1/6 of all e-waste is “invisible” and worth about $9.5 billion a year. Even though it’s called “invisible,” it’s a lot, weighing about 19.8 billion pounds.
Surprisingly, toys lead the “invisible” e-waste group, according to the study. In all, toys make up about 35% of the “invisible” e-waste. Every year, about 7.3 billion electronic toys are thrown away worldwide. But the problem is far larger than just toys. Home alarms, smoke alarms and power tools also lead to “invisible” e-waste.
WEEE is hoping that as more people and governments pay attention to e-waste, they will make a much greater effort to make good use of old electronics before they are thrown away. After all, there are many valuable parts in them.

【答案】66.A 67.A 68.B 69.C 70.A
【导语】本文主要讲述了Eason因为读了一本关于数学的书而对数学产生了兴趣,甚至梦想成为数学家,但他在数学上表现不佳,感到难过,于是写信向David求助,David则给他提出了一些建议。

69.细节理解题。根据David回信中的“Instead of being sad, learn from your mistakes.”可知,David建议Eason从错误中学习。故选C。
70.推理判断题。根据David回信的最后一段“You want to do math, which means you are motivated (有积极性的)! That’s already half the success.”可知,David认为Eason有做数学的积极性,这已经是成功的一半了,言外之意是Eason已经迈出了成功的一步,做得很好,但还有很长的路要走,不过他已经有了良好的开端。对比选项,A选项“Eason has already done a good job.”(Eason已经做得很好。)与David的言外之意相符,即Eason已经迈出了成功的一步,表现不错。故选A。

How to be a Better Teenager
Hello, everyone! Today I’d like to share my ideas about how to be a better teenager.
Firstly, it’s of great importance to develop healthy living habits, which lay a solid foundation for our overall well-being. We should maintain a balanced diet by consuming various nutritious foods such as fruits and vegetables. Regular exercise, whether it’s jogging in the morning or playing badminton after school, can strengthen our bodies and improve our mood. Moreover, getting sufficient sleep, without which we can’t concentrate well in class, is also crucial.
Secondly, when it comes to study, we need to make a well-structured study plan that suits our own learning pace. Once we’ve made the plan, we must take action immediately. We should actively solve problems that we meet during study instead of avoiding them.
Lastly, being friendly to others is vital. We should always wear a smile and offer help to those who are in trouble. By building good relationships, we can create a harmonious and pleasant environment.
