The yin and yang symbol is important in the imagination of many architects. It has provided inspiration for everything from a house to an enclosure for panda preservation in Copenhagen, and now influences the overall form of an eye-catching museum by MUDA-Architects.
Covering an area of 13,000 sq. m, the Tianfu Museum of Chinese Medicine is located between a lake and a major road in Chengdu, Sichuan. The project is part of a larger development push in the area by local authorities to promote traditional Chinese medicine. Indeed, its extensive landscaping will actually include a selection of herbs.
The yin-yang symbol-shaped museum features curved perforated aluminum panels (曲面穿孔铝板) on its west side to prevent solar heat gain from warming the inside. The east face of the building which faces the lake, however, has a large double-curved glass section to increase natural light inside. There are also skylights to maximize daylight.
The building doesn’t only look like the Taiji diagram but is also designed carefully to reflect the structure of Chengdu’s city flower — hibiscus (芙蓉花). When seeing from a long distance away, one can imagine a lovely hibiscus flower floating on a water body. The Tianfu Museum of Chinese Medicine is well integrated with the lakeside site, seeming like large petals (花瓣) gradually unfolding to open themselves up to the natural surroundings. Each petal houses a group of exhibition areas in the museum.
“We designed it for the Tianfu Museum of Chinese Medicine that brings opposing forces together in harmony and balance. The design represents the essence of traditional Chinese medicine and harmoniously integrates its underlying ancient philosophy into its architecture, landscape, and nature, as well as material design and inside spaces,” said MUDA-Architects.
24. What does the underlined word “enclosure” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Exhibit. B. Group.
C. Research. D. Reserve.
25. What is the primary purpose of the Tianfu Museum of Chinese Medicine project?
A. To improve transportation facilities.
B. To promote traditional Chinese medicine.
C. To conserve endangered wildlife species.
D. To create a modern museum in Chengdu.
26. What is the function of the curved perforated aluminum panels?
A. To collect rainwater for landscaping.
B. To provide structural support for the roof.
C. To reduce solar heat entering the building.
D. To enhance the building’s artistic appearance.
27. What is the architects’ attitude toward the museum’s design?
A. Critical of its complicated composing structure.
B. Proud of its harmony with philosophical principles.
C. Doubtful about its impact on environmental protection.
D. Delighted with its cultural symbolism of Chinese pandas.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary puts it simply: “birdbrain: a stupid person”. Well, some birds are having the last laugh with that one.
For animals, the ability to solve problems with multiple tools is a rare talent, which was reported only in chimpanzees. But now, a study conducted by Osuna-Mascaró’s team addsGoffin’s cockatoos (美冠鹦鹉) to the“Dean’s List”, too. Inspired by the chimpanzees which fish for white ants via tools, the team tasked the cockatoos with fishing for a kind of nut in three experiments.
Firstly, the researchers made a box containing a nut which was covered by a transparent membrane Once a cockatoo broke it through with a sharp stick, the bird would need to use a straw (麦秆) to reach the nut. The birds were supplied with the two tools. Seven of the 10 cockaloos figured it out, with two completing the task within 35 seconds at their first attempt! Since the cockatoos don’t have similar foraging (觅食的) requirements in the wild, there is no chance that they can adapt their tool-using strategies to the task naturally.
Next, the team mixed up the boxes and randomly presented each bird with a box with the membrane or a box without. The birds were given the same two tools. As a result, all the cockatoos mastered the test quickly and were able to recognize when a single tool was sufficient and when two tools were required. However, the birds showed an interesting behavior beyond the researchers’ expectations. “When they chose between which tool to use, they were picking one up, releasing it, then picking up the other one, and so on,” says Osuna-Mascarσ. “It is worthwhile to figure this out in future.”
Afterwards, the researchers evaluated the birds’ transportation ability while carrying tools in different situations. Most cockatoos carried the two tools together when they were presented with a box having the membrane. “I’ ve seen birds combining objects playfully, but they rarely transport more than one object together in their normal behavior,” says one biologist. “We feel that, in terms of technical cognition and tool use, birds have been underestimated. Maybe it’s time for dictionary editors to justify birds.”
28. What common feature do animals in the “Dean’s List” have?
A. Possessing the intelligence to use tools.
B. Displaying exceptional social behaviors.
C. Being highly adaptable to the environment.
D. Exhibiting a great ability to identify objects.
29. Why did the researchers use the the membrane in the experiments?
A. To pose a challenge to the cockatoos.
B. To prevent the nut falling off the box.
C. To encourage the cockatoos to compete.
D. To increase the visual appeal of the box.
30. What are the cockatoos capable of doing according to the second experiment?
A. Memorizing the location of every nut.
B. Identifying the order of different boxes.
C. Adjusting tool use based on the situation.
D. Prioritizing the boxes without the membrane.
31. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Why used we to underestimate birds’ intelligence
B. How do Goffin’s cockatoos use tools in the wild
C. Goffin’s cockatoos beat chimpanzees in employing tools
D. Goffin’s cockaloos break down the “birdbrain” prejudice

In the online world of social networking, a number of connections made through sites such as MyLife, MySpace, and Facebook bear out the theory of “Six Degrees of Separation” — any two people in the world are connected to each other by no more than six connections or relationships. These sites have changed the way we connect and communicate with others, breaking down geographical barriers and allowing individuals from different corners of the world to establish virtual connections.
In order to see how connections are made between individuals online, Steve Jackson created a group on Facebook called Six Degrees and invited all of his friends to join it. Initially, only 20 friends joined his group. However, within days, things changed quickly. As those friends invited their friends, who also invited their friends, Jackson had 30,000 friends soon. Before long, he had over 2 million friends. Clearly, the Internet could help prove the theory of “Six Degrees of Separation”.
We’ ve talked about the evidence for the theory of “Six Degrees of Separation”. Now let’s explore another aspect related to this theory — the role of acquaintances in human relationships.
An acquaintance is someone between a stranger and a close friend. They are outside a person’s inner circle of close friends and family, but not as completely unknown as strangers. Acquaintances might include people we frequently encounter — people we see daily at the coffee shop, people with whom we take a class at our local community college, or even people with whom we share details of our personal lives.
Our acquaintances tend to have different social circles from ours. However, in comparison, our friends’ knowledge and social ties tend to largely overlap (重合) with ours. In consequence, our friends can help us spread a message in the same communities we occupy. Sometimes, acquaintances can help us spread a message beyond our reach. Therefore, we should admit that acquaintances play a big role in connecting people with others.
32. How does the author support his/ her opinion on “Six Degrees of Separation”?
A. By providing statistical data from scientific studies.
B. By citing views of administration staff in social media.
C. By describing the technical features of some websites.
D. By quoting some examples of social media platforms.
33. What do the figures in Paragraph 2 show?
A. Online social media can do more harm than good to us.
B. The Internet helps make people’s friendships last longer.
C. Online social media can help us connect with more people.
D. Facebook plays a significant role in people’s everyday lives.
34. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. Different types of relationship in social circles.
B. The definition and examples of acquaintances.
C. The impact of acquaintances on our daily lives.
D. The importance of close friends in social lives.
35. What can we learn about acquaintances from the text?
A. They will eventually become the closest friends of ours.
B. They usually have the same social ties as we do in daily life.
C. They may not be as reliable as the friends we really have.
D. They can expand our social relationships in different circles.

If you are extremely anxious about the question “How do l make a good impression in an interview?”, read on.
To come off well in an interview, the first objective is to project an expression and manner that is nonthreatening, trustworthy, and competent. ____36____ Scientists have shown that facial expressions interpreted as fear or anger will stimulate an observer’s alarm and suspicion. Scholars have likewise proved in experiments that people with expressions seen as happy are judged to be more trustworthy and competent than those seen as bothersome.
____37____ The goal is to model what researchers call the Duchenne smile, which is associated with actual happiness. Not only does smiling like this indicate a positive mood to others, but it also, scholars have shown, can reduce stress in you.
If this behavior doesn’t come naturally, here’s a trick: Before your interview, spend a few seconds in the restroom with a pencil gripped (紧咬) between your molars (后牙). ____38____
This is not a global solution to a successful first impression, however. Research shows that although a relaxed smile is great for interviewing, it does not necessarily work for dating. Scholars’ writing in the journal Emotion in 2011 found that although men judge a happy expression as the most attractive way for a woman to look, women say that it is one of the least attractive looks for a man. ____39____
In general, when first meeting someone, question the signals you’re getting from your brain about the interviewee. ____40____ Giving that extra consideration is the right thing to do — and you might discover a star whose reserved manner made others overlook their talent.
A. So smile.
B. How to control the impression you make?
C. Fortunately, a handy way to do just this is simply to look happy.
D. By this advice, I don’t mean you should smile like Jack Nicholson.
E. At a first meeting, then, men need to be sure whether they’ re after a job or on a date.
F. If something feels off, specifically ask yourself whether this person might be nervous or shy.
G. This will bend the muscles around your eyes, where happiness is actually seen when you smile.

On a sunny Saturday morning, the small town of Greenfield was busy with activity. The annual community fair was taking place in the town square, an event that everyone looked forward to. Local sellers were selling everything from handmade crafts to delicious homemade treats. Children were running around, their laughter echoing through the streets.
Among the crowd was 16-year-old Flora. She was volunteering at the fair, helping with various tasks. Flora was in charge of the art booth (摊位), where kids could come and create their own masterpieces. As she was setting up the paints and brushes, she noticed Mr. Brown,a long-time resident of Greenfield, sitting on a bench nearby, looking a bit lost.
Flora walked over to him with a friendly smile. “Hello, Mr. Brown! Are you enjoying the fair?” she asked. Mr. Brown looked up at her and sighed. “I used to love these community events, but now that my wife is gone, it just doesn’t feel the same.” Flora’s heart sank. She couldn’t imagine how lonely Mr. Brown must feel. She knew she had to do something to make him feel part of the community again.
After a while, Lily had an idea. She gathered some of the children who were painting excitedly at the booth and explained her plan to them. The children were immediately on board, their eyes shining with excitement.
They all set to work, each child putting their heart into creating a special gift for Mr.Brown. Some painted pictures of the town square, filled with people laughing and having fun. Usually, what's happening in the ground under an ice sheet plays a key role in deciding the ice flow. As the ground of Greenland is covered with ice around two point five kilometers thick, it's difficult to know what is happening deep underground. In two thousand nine, a number of stations were built across screen land to study the ice flow. However, the stations offered little information. Recently, a new study made an important discovery. The researchers are able to map out what is happening deep down by measuring waves from earthquakes. These waves travel along the earth surface. By measuring the speed, shape, Anderson of the waves, researchers are able to work out what material they are traveling through. The high resolution images of the rocks underneath the ice sheet help identify which areas are most likely to have faster ice flow. IT will give us a Better understanding of the processes that contribute to increase dice flowing into the ocean and the sea level rise. That's all for today's program. Thanks for listening.
D 25. B 26. C 27. B
根据文章第二段中“The project is part of a larger development push in the area by local authorities to promote traditional Chinese medicine.(该项目是当地政府在该地区推广中医药的更大发展规划的一部分。)”
根据文章第三段中“The yin-yang symbol-shaped museum features curved perforated aluminum panels on its west side to prevent solar heat gain from warming the inside.(阴阳符号形状的博物馆在其西侧设有曲面穿孔铝板,以防止太阳热量的增加使内部变暖。)”
根据文章最后一段中““We designed it for the Tianfu Museum of Chinese Medicine that brings opposing forces together in harmony and balance. The design represents the essence of traditional Chinese medicine and harmoniously integrates its underlying ancient philosophy into its architecture, landscape, and nature, as well as material design and inside spaces,” said MUDA-Architects.( MUDA-Architects说道:“我们的设计将对立的力量与和谐平衡统一起来。这一设计体现了中医药的精髓,并将古老的哲学和谐地融入建筑、景观、自然以及材料设计和内部空间中。”)”可知,建筑师表示他们的设计将古老的哲学和谐地融入建筑、景观、自然以及材料设计和内部空间中,由此可推断出建筑师对博物馆设计的态度是对其与哲学原理和谐统一的自豪。故选B。
C
A 29. A 30. C 31. D
根据第二段“For animals, the ability to solve problems with multiple tools is a rare talent, which was reported only in chimpanzees. But now, a study conducted by Osuna-Mascaró’s team addsGoffin’s cockatoos (美冠鹦鹉) to the “Dean’s List”, too.(对于动物来说,使用多种工具解决问题的能力是一种罕见的天赋,此前只有黑猩猩被报道具备这种能力。但现在,奥苏纳 - 马斯卡罗团队的一项研究也将美冠鹦鹉列入了这份“优秀名单”)” 可知,能进入 “优秀名单” 的动物的共同特征是具备使用工具的智慧。故选A。
根据第三段“Firstly, the researchers made a box containing a nut which was covered by a transparent membrane (透明薄膜). Once a cockatoo broke it through with a sharp stick, the bird would need to use a straw (麦秆) to reach the nut.(首先,研究人员制作了一个装有坚果的盒子,坚果被一层透明薄膜覆盖。一旦美冠鹦鹉用一根锋利的棍子打破薄膜,它就需要用一根麦秆够到坚果)” 可推断,研究人员使用透明薄膜是为了给美冠鹦鹉设置难题,让它们需要使用多种工具来获取坚果。故选A。
根据第四段“Next, the team mixed up the boxes and randomly presented each bird with a box with the membrane or a box without. The birds were given the same two tools. As a result, all the cockatoos mastered the test quickly and were able to recognize when a single tool was sufficient and when two tools were required.(接下来,研究小组把盒子混在一起,随机给每只鸟一个有薄膜的盒子或一个没有薄膜的盒子。给鸟儿们同样的两种工具。结果,所有的美冠鹦鹉都很快掌握了测试内容,并且能够识别什么时候用一种工具就足够了,什么时候需要两种工具)”可知,在第二个实验中美冠鹦鹉能够根据情况调整工具的使用。故选C。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“The Merriam-Webster dictionary puts it simply: “birdbrain: a stupid person”.(韦氏词典简单地将“birdbrain”定义为:“愚蠢的人”)”,说明人们对鸟类存在 “愚蠢” 的偏见。而后文通过研究表明“For animals, the ability to solve problems with multiple tools is a rare talent, which was reported only in chimpanzees. But now, a study conducted by Osuna-Mascaró’s team addsGoffin’s cockatoos(美冠鹦鹉) to the“Dean’s List”, too.(对于动物来说,使用多种工具解决问题的能力是一种罕见的天赋,此前只有黑猩猩被报道具备这种能力。但现在,奥苏纳 - 马斯卡罗团队的一项研究也将美冠鹦鹉列入了这份“优秀名单”)”证明美冠鹦鹉具备高智商,能使用多种工具解决问题,打破了之前人们认为鸟类愚蠢的偏见。D选项“美冠鹦鹉打破了“笨鸟” 偏见”适合作为文章标题。故选D。
D
D 33. C 34. B 35. D
根据第一段“In the online world of social networking, a number of connections made through sites such as MyLife, MySpace, and Facebook bear out the theory of ‘Six Degrees of Separation’.(在社交网络的在线世界中,通过 MyLife、MySpace和Facebook 等网站建立的许多连接证实了‘六度分隔理论’。)”
第二段“Initially, only 20 friends joined his group. However, within days, things changed quickly. As those friends invited their friends, who also invited their friends, Jackson had 30,000 friends soon. Before long, he had over 2 million friends.(起初,只有20个朋友加入了他的小组。然而,几天之内,事情很快发生了变化。当这些朋友邀请他们的朋友时,他们也邀请了他们的朋友,杰克逊很快就有了3万个朋友。不久,他就有了200多万个朋友。)”这些数字表明,通过互联网社交平台,人际连接的数量呈指数级增长,从而证明了互联网帮助人们与更多人建立联系,印证了六度分隔理论的有效性。故选C。
【34题详解】
主旨大意题。第四段首句指出“An acquaintance is someone between a stranger and a close friend.(泛泛之交是介于陌生人和亲密朋友之间的人。)”,随后通过举例说明泛泛之交的具体类型,如“people we frequently encounter — people we see daily at the coffee shop, people with whom we take a class at our local community college(我们经常遇到的人——每天在咖啡店见到的人、在当地社区大学一起上课的人)”。
根据最后一段“Our acquaintances tend to have different social circles from ours.(我们的泛泛之交往往拥有与我们不同的社交圈。)”和第四句“Sometimes, acquaintances can help us spread a message beyond our reach.(有时,泛泛之交可以帮助我们将信息传播到我们无法触及的范围之外。)”
F. If something feels off specifically ask yourself whether this person might be nervous or shy.
G. This will bend the muscles around your eyes, where happiness is actually seen when you smile.
C 37. A 38. G 39. E 40. F
根据上文“To come off well in an interview, the first objective is to project an expression and manner that is nonthreatening, trustworthy, and competent. (为了在面试中表现出色,首要目标是展现出一种无威胁、值得信赖且有能力的表情和举止。) ”选项承接上文说明到这一目标的方法。故C选项“幸运的是,要做到这一点,一个方便的方法就是看起来很开心。”符合语境。故选C。
【37题详解】
根据下文“The goal is to model what researchers call the Duchenne smile, which is associated with actual happiness. Not only does smiling like this indicate a positive mood to others, but it also, scholars have shown, can reduce stress in you. (目标是模仿研究人员所说的杜兴式微笑,这种微笑与真正的快乐相关。学者表明,这样微笑不仅能向他人表明积极的情绪,还能减轻你的压力。)” 可知,该段围绕微笑展开。故A选项“所以要微笑。”符合语境。故选A。
根据上文“If this behavior doesn’t come naturally, here’s a trick: Before your interview, spend a few seconds in the restroom with a pencil gripped ( 紧咬) between your molars (后牙). (如果这种行为不自然,这里有个技巧:在面试前,在洗手间花几秒钟用后牙咬住铅笔。)” 可知,选项承接上文说明上文做法达到的效果。G选项“这会弯曲你眼睛周围的肌肉,当你微笑的时候,你会看到快乐。”符合语境。故选G。
【39题详解】
根据上文“Research shows that although a relaxed smile is great for interviewing, it does not necessarily work for dating.Scholars’ writing in the journal Emotion in 2011 found that although men judge a happy expression as the most attractive way for a woman to look, women say that it is one of the least attractive looks for a man.
根据上文“In general, when first meeting someone, question the signals you’ re getting from your brain about the interviewee. (一般来说,初次见到某人时,要质疑你从大脑中得到的关于面试者的信号。)”可知,选项承接上文说明如果感觉不对劲,具体的做法。故F选项“如果感觉有些不对劲,那就特别问问自己,这个人是不是可能紧张或害羞。”符合语境。故选F。

Our English class recently held a lively debate on “Brain Power VS AI in English Learning”. Some argued that AI tools like translators and speech apps provide unmatched efficiency, offering instant corrections and personalized practice. Others maintained that human cognition fosters deeper understanding, emphasizing creativity and cultural sensitivity that machines cannot replicate.
Looking ahead, most agreed that the ideal approach lies in synergy. While AI excels at repetitive tasks and instant feedback, human teachers cultivate critical thinking and authentic communication skills.
Others made colorful cards with messages of love and friendship. Flora herself was busy making a small scrapbook (剪贴簿), collecting photos of the community events over the years that she had found in the town library.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Flora led the children towards the bench where Mr. Brown was still sitting. Holding their colorful creations, the kids surrounded him with bright smiles. “These are for you!” one child exclaimed, handing him a painting of the lively town square. Another shyly offered a card with “We care!” written in crayon. Flora gently placed the scrapbook on his lap. As Mr. Brown flipped through the pages, his eyes lingered on a photo of him and his wife laughed at a past fair. “We wanted you to remember all the happy times,” Flora said softly.
Suddenly, a tear rolled down Mr. Brown’s cheek. “Thank you,” he whispered, his voice trembling. “This… this reminds me of how she loved this fair.” Flora knelt beside him. “She’s still part of our community, just like you.” The children hugged him, and nearby residents noticed, gathering to share stories of past fairs. By the end of the day, Mr. Brown was helping at the booth, his laughter blending with the crowd. The square felt whole again — for everyone.
