China’s capital city of Beijing is all set to host an interesting half-marathon that will set thousands of human runners against dozens of bipedal (双足行走的) robots developed by some of the world’s leading robotics companies.
This coming April, the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (E-Town) will be hosting an interesting running event for both humans and human-like robots. 12,000 people are expected to take part in the event alongside dozens of bipedal robots developed by major robotics companies, making this one of the strangest half marathons in history. Participating robots will need to have a human-inspired appearance, be between 0.5 and 2 meters tall (so no giant robots are allowed), and have the ability to run or at least walk on two legs. The winners, whether humans or robots, will receive prize money depending on their performance.
Do the robots have a chance to win against humans? Well, we’ll have to wait until April to find out, but experts say seasoned human runners still have an edge over bipedal robots. The robots’ speeds reportedly range from 8 to 12 km/h, whereas finishing a 21.1-kilometer half-marathon in an hour and a half requires an average speed of 14 km/h. Plus, battery autonomy is likely to be a major factor, as organizers have already announced that battery swapping mid-race is allowed.
This won’t be the first time robots compete in official running events. Last year, Laibo 2, a quadruped (四足的) robot became the first robot to ever complete a full marathon on a single charge. Sadly, it won’t be able to take part in April’s half-marathon, as the event is only open to bipedal robots.
Recently, the humanoid robot “Tiangong” in Beijing cheered for the runners of the Yizhuang Half Marathon and even crossed the finish line together with them. However, its brief appearance left many people craving or more. In April, Tiangong will be at the starting line.
4. What do we know about the half-marathon to be held in Beijing?
A. It is open to quadruped robots. B. It uses a human-like robot as the host.
C. It encourages more people to participate. D. It features robots and humans competing together.
5. What is the primary challenge for bipedal robots in the half-marathon?
A. The restriction on their height. B. The limitation of their speed.
C. The requirement for their appearance. D. The difficulty in maintaining power.
6. What will happen to the robot “Tiangong” in the race in April?
A. Its role will undergo a transformation. B. Its speed will be faster than humans.
C. Its functions will be expanded. D. Its shape will be different.
7 What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The future technology: robots in half-marathon
B. The ultimate race: humans vs robots in half-marathon
C. Beijing E-Town’s human-robot running challenge
D. Bipedal robots to compete in Beijing’s half-marathon
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. A 7. C

You do not have to search for long on a networking site for people at work to find “inspirational” content. Much more practical insights can be found in a forthcoming book called Inspire, by Adam Galinsky, an academic at the Columbia Business School.
Lots of firms use a series of boringly abstract words to convey their goal, such as “change”, “innovate”, “connect” and so on. The result is less a mission than a mood board. Professor Galinsky cites an experiment that showed the effect of more concrete language. In it, teams were asked to design toys and given a vision statement to guide their behaviour.
Teams who were handed a statement with more visual language—to create toys that make wide-eyed kids laugh and proud parents smile—produced more engaging toys than teams who were given something more generic (通用的).
Galinsky also points to the power of counterfactual (反事实的) thinking to inspire a sense of meaning. Participants were asked to reflect on important events in their lives, such as their choice of college. Some were also asked to think about how things would have turned out if this event had not taken place. This group ascribed greater meaning to the event in question, whether because they concluded fate had played a part in it or because it forced them to think through its consequences more clearly.
This type of counterfactual thinking can also be used to strengthen employees’ ties to firms; motivating people to imagine a world in which their company does not exist seems to increase a sense of attachment.
Perhaps the most striking idea in Galinsky’s book is that, instead of bosses motivating people from above, individuals can do it for themselves. One example is a piece of research. In this research some Swiss citizens who had newly registered with a government employment agency were asked to undertake a 10- to 15-minute exercise in which they reflected on values that mattered to them. They were three times more likely to find a job than those who did not do the exercise.
Inspiration can be bottom-up and top-down. Don’t just tell your team what inspirational figures said. Ask why their jobs matter to them.
8. What can be inferred about the toy design experiment?
A. Powerful language skills drive success.
B Emotional appeal outweighs functional design.
C. Parents involvement inspires high-quality toys.
D. Specific instructions yield better creative outcomes.
9. What does the underlined word “ascribed” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Owed. B. Added. C. Exposed. D. Devoted.
10. What’s the effect of counterfactual thinking on employees?
A. It helps build a strong relationship.
B. It reduces workplace decision-making time.
C. It increases their sense of belonging.
D. It teaches them the significance of attachment.
11. What does the example of Swiss citizens suggest?
A. The importance of government employment agencies.
B. The effectiveness of self-motivation techniques.
C. The impact of reflection on job search success.
D. The role of universities in career development.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. B
根据第三段“Teams who were handed a statement with more visual language—to create toys that make wide - eyed kids laugh and proud parents smile—produced more engaging toys than teams who were given something more generic (通用的).( 拿到更具画面感表述指令(即制作出让眼睛睁得大大的孩子们欢笑、让自豪的家长们微笑的玩具)的团队,比那些拿到更为笼统指令的团队,制作出的玩具更引人入胜)”可推断,具体的指示能带来更好的创意成果。故选D。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“whether because they concluded fate had played a part in it or because it forced them to think through its consequences more clearly.(也许是因为他们认为命运在其中起了作用,也许是因为命运迫使他们更清楚地思考它的后果)”可知,这组人因为某些原因,认为所讨论的事件有更重大的意义,所以这里 “ascribed” 意思是 “归因于,认为…… 具有”,与 “owed” 意思相近。故选A。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段 “This type of counterfactual thinking can also be used to strengthen employees’ ties to firms; motivating people to imagine a world in which their company does not exist seems to increase a sense of attachment.(这种反事实思维还可用于强化员工与公司之间的联系;促使人们去想象一个他们公司不存在的世界,似乎会增强他们的归属感)”可知,这种反事实思维对员工的影响是增加他们的归属感。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段“Perhaps the most striking idea in Galinsky’s book is that, instead of bosses motivating people from above, individuals can do it for themselves.(也许加林斯基书中最引人注目的观点是,激励并非只能由上司从上至下推动,个体也可以自我激励)”和“Some Swiss citizens who had newly registered with a government employment agency were asked to undertake a 10 - to 15 - minute exercise in which they reflected on values that mattered to them. They were three times more likely to find a job than those who did not do the exercise.( 一些刚在政府就业机构登记注册的瑞士公民,被要求进行一项时长 10 到 15 分钟的活动,在此活动中他们思考对自己重要的价值观。相较于未进行该活动的人,他们找到工作的可能性是其三倍) ”可知,提到瑞士公民通过反思对自己重要的价值观(即自我激励),找到工作的概率提升三倍,是为了说明自我激励技巧的有效性。故选B。
D
Small wild birds have an ability to recall what they ate, where they found it and when, a new study has shown. Researchers at the University of Cambridge and the University of East Anglia in the UK studied the feeding habits of blue tits (山雀) and great tits.
In the experiments, researchers set up automated food containers and a software program that created unique experiences for individual birds and tracked their behavior. The birds were fitted with radio frequency tracking tags on their legs. When they landed on the feeder’s special stand, their tag was read, and food was either released or not through an electronic door. Feeders were loaded with sunflower seeds, which the birds prefer — and peanut pieces — a food less favored. Both of them ran out in the experiments and were refilled at different rates.
“All else being equal, birds prefer to eat sunflower seeds,” said researcher Gabrielle Davidson. “But once a bird starts to eat them, they become unavailable two hours later.” The experiments showed that when birds came back to the feeders more than two hours later, they directly went to the peanuts, even though those are not their favorite food. These findings provide the first evidence for episodic-like (情景式) memory in the wild and show that these birds are more intelligent than they’ve been given credit for.
Previous studies on episodic-like memory have involved bigger-brained bird species. This study focuses on smaller-brained, more adaptable bird species that don’t hide their food. “The birds were behaving naturally in a familiar environment, so we captured something more realistic than if they had been captive (被圈养的),” Davidson added.
The study also might suggest that humans leaving out food for garden birds could be one factor contributing to the evolution of these memory traits. It is in the same way that birds have evolved beak (鸟喙) adaptations in response to increased reliance on garden feeders, researchers said.
12. How did the researchers obtain the experimental results?
A. By observing wild birds’ natural behavior.
B. By trapping the birds when they look for food.
C. By using man-made tools to monitor the birds.
D. By changing food and recording birds’ responses.
13. What can we learn from Gabrielle Davidson’s remarks?
A. Birds’ food preferences are unchangeable.
B. The availability of food affects birds’ choices.
C. Captive birds have memory of food availability.
D. Sunflower seeds are always accessible to birds.
14. What makes the study unique compared to previous research?
A. Observing birds in artificial environments.
B. Studying wild birds with lesser brain capacity.
C. Focusing on birds without food-storing habits.
D. Proving birds use instinct rather than memory.
15. What can be concluded from the last paragraph?
A. Human feeding affects bird evolution.
B. Birds’ memory is unrelated to their food choice.
C Most birds have episodic-like memory.
D. Birds’ adaptive evolution is limited to physical traits.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. B 15. A
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了一项关于山雀的情景式记忆的研究,揭示它们能记住食物位置和时间,并探讨人类喂食可能影响鸟类进化。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。由第二段中“In the experiments, researchers set up automated food containers and a software program that created unique experiences for individual birds and tracked their behavior. The birds were fitted with radio frequency tracking tags on their legs. When they landed on the feeder’s special stand, their tag was read (在实验中,研究人员建立了自动食物容器和一个软件程序,为每只鸟创造了独特的体验,并跟踪了它们的行为。这些鸟的腿上安装了射频跟踪标签。当它们降落在喂食器的特殊支架上时,它们的标签被读取)”可知,研究人员通过自动化设备、软件程序和射频标签等人造工具监测鸟类行为。故选C项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。由第三段中““But once a bird starts to eat them, they become unavailable two hours later.” The experiments showed that when birds came back to the feeders more than two hours later, they directly went to the peanuts, even though those are not their favorite food. (“但是一旦一只鸟开始吃葵花籽,两个小时后葵花籽就没有了。”实验表明,当鸟类在两个多小时后回到喂食器时,它们直接去吃花生,即使花生不是它们最喜欢的食物)”可知,研究中鸟把葵花籽吃完了,两小时后鸟就会吃不喜欢吃的花生,进而推知,食物的可获得性会影响鸟类的选择。故选B项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。由第四段中“Previous studies on episodic-like memory have involved bigger-brained bird species. This study focuses on smaller-brained, more adaptable bird species that don’t hide their food. (之前关于情景式记忆的研究涉及大脑较大的鸟类。这项研究的重点是大脑较小、适应性更强、不隐藏食物的鸟类)”可知,与之前的研究相比,这项研究的独特之处在于它研究脑容量较小的野生鸟类。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。由最后一段“The study also might suggest that humans leaving out food for garden birds could be one factor contributing to the evolution of these memory traits. It is in the same way that birds have evolved beak (鸟喙) adaptations in response to increased reliance on garden feeders, researchers said.(这项研究还可能表明,人类为花园鸟类留下食物可能是导致这些记忆特征进化的一个因素。研究人员表示,鸟类也以同样的方式进化出喙的适应性,以应对对花园觅食者的日益依赖)”可知,人类投喂可能促进鸟类记忆特征的进化,类似鸟喙适应现象,可得出人类喂养会影响鸟类的进化。故选A项。

According to the American Psychological Association, the brain’s volume peaks in the early 20s and gradually declines for the rest of life. But your lifestyle can slow the process. ____16____ Simple behaviour changes can help us stay sharp for as long as possible. What you do or don’t do makes a huge difference to your memory skills.
____17____
Everyone learns in different ways. You might find reading enormously effective, while your friend would rather watch a video or listen to a podcast. Each path creates different experiences and memories. ____18____ Others use a combination of different content types — posts, talks, documentaries, hooks (digital and physical) and podcasts. Research shows that each learning style uses different parts of the brain. By involving more of the brain during learning, you can improve your ability to recall information and remember more of what you learn.
Build a broad range of artistic interests.
Pablo Picasso once said. “____19____” Taking up a new hobby or rediscovering an old one can help you improve your focus, mood and memory. Artistic hobbies stimulate the brain to grow new ones by using the senses in new ways. Learning something new requires you to stretch yourself physically, mentally or emotionally. Any hobby that involves a great deal of attention to detail can avoid cognitive decline and improve your memory.
Becoming a lifelong learner can help you maintain a healthy brain.
Lifelong learning — the “ongoing, voluntary, and self-motivated” pursuit of new knowledge, can keep our brains working at optimum levels — which can limit cognitive and memory decline as we age. Lifelong learning is a journey, not a destination — there’s never a shortage of new things to learn. ____20____
A. Accept new learning formats.
B. Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.
C. Hobbies can also bring a sense of fulfillment to our lives.
D. A consistently stimulated interest may be the key to an energetic life.
E. You can preserve and even enhance your mental capabilities as you age.
F. Most people tend to use a dominant style to acquire new knowledge.
G. Choose to learn what you find interesting and the journey will be fun.
【答案】16. E 17. A 18. F 19. B 20. G

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
There was a time when I lived alone in quite a large apartment which was 60 square meters right in the city center. I lived there alone because my former classmate had moved out, and I could afford to keep it. It was nice and had an open-space format. I was something like the first tenant (租户) after it’d been renovated, and it was the envy of many of my friends.
At that time I used to do several two-to-three weeks hitchhiking trips throughout the year, during which the flat was basically empty. My best and closest friend Lucy was living a little ways outside of the city—“outside” in the sense that the bus there took like 40 minutes and it ran something like once every two hours or so. I told her she could have the key when I was gone. I had no plants to take care of, but if she wanted to, she and her friends—whom I also knew—could hang out whenever they liked. I trusted her completely. And so they did.
The day after I returned from one of these trips, I looked around the flat and noticed something… different, I immediately texted my friend.
I asked, “Why are the walls in the flat somewhat whiter than it used to be?”
I immediately got a call back. Lucy said, “I meant to tell you the story, but I haven’t had the chance since you got back.” Apparently, she and two of her friends were hanging out at my place one day, and one of them got a cold can of soda. Can you already see where this is going? The burst got the couch and two large walls in a corner. The girl with the can was shocked by the scope of the devastation she had caused, but Lucy just sighed and told the other two that I had trusted them with the space.

The painter arrived and examined the walls.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Lucy tried to comfort her, saying they’d fix it. She promised to gather her friends and find a way to restore the walls to their original state. They searched online for solutions, and eventually, they decided to hire a professional painter to do the job. Lucy felt guilty about the incident but was determined to make it right. She called me again, explaining everything in detail and assuring me that they would cover the cost of the repairs. I was touched by her sincerity and willingness to take responsibility, so I told her not to worry too much and that accidents happen.
The painter arrived and examined the walls. He assessed the damage and assured us that it could be fixed. Lucy and her friends helped him move the furniture and cover the floor to protect it from paint splatters. The painter worked diligently, applying layers of paint until the walls looked as good as new. Lucy and her friends stayed to help clean up afterward, and they even left a small note of apology on the kitchen counter. When I saw the restored apartment, I was impressed by their efforts and grateful for their friendship. The incident not only strengthened our bond but also taught me the value of trust and forgiveness.

B. Emotional appeal outweighs functional design.

B Studying wild birds with lesser brain capacity.
C. Focusing on birds without food-storing habits.
D. Proving birds use instinct rather than memory.
15. What can be concluded from the last paragraph?
A. Human feeding affects bird evolution.
B. Birds’ memory is unrelated to their food choice.
C. Most birds have episodic-like memory.
D. Birds’ adaptive evolution is limited to physical traits.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
