Passage 1
It seems that some animals can know when an earthquake (地震) will come. This can be important, because earthquakes can kill people. If animals can predict the earthquake, they may help save people’s lives. Some animals make a lot of noise before an earthquake. If dogs are usually quiet, they will bark (吠叫) loudly before an earthquake. And you can see some strange things on other animals. Mice leave their homes and run away. Fish jump out of the water.
In Italy, lots of cats ran down the streets together. Only a few hours later, an earthquake came.
In the US, a man had some small pet frogs in his house. One Sunday night, the frogs kept jumping around and made loud noise. This woke up the man. That night, again it was an earthquake and luckily, the man was saved.

Koalas are often called koala bears, but they are not bears. They have small eyes, a big nose and round ears. And they have no tails. They can run as fast as a rabbit. They can also climb trees very well.
Koalas live in eucalyptus trees (桉树) and feed on the tree leaves. They usually sleep about 20 hours a day. The word “koala” means “no drink” because they don’t drink water very often. They get all the water they need from the yummy leaves they eat.
A koala mom usually has one baby at a time. When the baby is born (出生), it is only 2 cm long. It has no hair, no ears, and can’t see anything. It lives in its mom’s pouch (育儿袋), and stays there for about 6 months. That’s when it starts to see and grows ears and hair. After 8 to 9 months, it’s too big to get into the pouch, so it spends all its time on its mother’s back. At about 12 months, it leaves its mom to build its home. Usually, a koala can live for 16 years.
Now koalas are in great danger. Their numbers are dropping every year. A group called Bangalow Koalas started in 2019 to help save them. They’ve planted over 336,000 eucalyptus trees, and they want to plant 500,000 more by 2025. A worker of the group said, “We love the cute animals. We’ll do everything to save them.” In fact, it’s everyone’s duty to save them.
