In a workshop in Yingshan County, central China, German scholar Fabian Schrodt carefully pressed paper onto inked clay (黏土) blocks, 18 (recreate) an 11th-century invention from ancient China — Bi Sheng’s movable type printing.
His hands-on experience at the Bi Sheng Memorial Hall brought to life the ingenuity of the Song Dynasty inventor. Bi Sheng’s clay-type system, which predated (早于) German printer Johannes Gutenberg’s metal press 19 400 years, 20 (recognize) as the earliest recorded movable type printing in human history.
Thousands of miles away in Mainz, Germany, visitors to the Gutenberg Museum have also encountered a similar sense of historic 21 (innovate).
While Gutenberg’s 15th-century metal type printing press famously 22 (revolutionize) Europe, Ulf Sölter, director of Mainz’s Gutenberg Museum, acknowledges an 23 (early) pioneer. “Bi and Gutenberg’s inventions were conceptually similar — namely, breaking down individual works into their individual components — but Bi came up with 24 idea long before Gutenberg,” said Sölter.
For Schrodt, who spent an afternoon learning from Wang Kui — an intangible cultural inheritor of Bi’s movable type printing — such preservation is extremely 25 (value). “Technological advancements can lead to a degradation (退化) of collective knowledge,” Schrodt noted. “Wang’s dedication to 26 (preserve) Bi’s legacy serves a crucial purpose: ensuring that humanity does not reach a point 27 we possess the technology for interstellar travel but cannot rebuild it once lost, simply because no one knows how.”
The Hedgehog’s Dilemma (刺猬困境) is a concept that explores the tension between the desire for close relationships and the risk of emotional harm. Schopenhauer, a German philosopher, used the metaphor of hedgehogs seeking warmth on a cold winter day: they crowd together for comfort but soon feel the pain of each other’s quills (刺). They separate, only to feel the cold again, eventually finding a suitable distance that allows warmth without pain. 1
So that’s the theory, but what does this look like in our everyday lives? 2 But should we let these experiences block us from letting our guard down in the future? Schopenhauer’s advice would probably be “yes”. 3 For example,a review, which analyzed 148 studies involving 308,849 participants, found that individuals with strong social connections have a 50% increased likelihood of survival. Additionally, the National Institute on Aging reports that the health risks of long-term isolation are equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
4 Psychological therapist Hilary Sanders explains chat behaviors like isolation or anger can serve as survival strategies during childhood. While these defenses may provide short-term protection, they can block meaningful connections if they persist.
In conclusion, the natural longing for connection drives us to seek out meaningful relationships, even when we know that weakness can lead to emotional pain. Yes, there are risks in exposing our true selves and emotions, but unlike hedgehogs, humans don’t come with the quills built in. 5 So when we learn to lower our defence for safe people, there’s a chance we actually can have it all — the warmth of genuine relationships without the fear of being hurt.
A.This shows the importance of adaptability in nature.
B.However, modern research offers a different perspective.
C.Most of the defensive reactions originate from early experiences.
D.These experiences can make it difficult to trust others in the future.
E.This reflects humans’ struggle to balance closeness and self-protection.
F.Many people share experiences of emotional pain from close relationships.
G.We have the capacity to choose whom we trust and how we protect ourselves.

Tyler Morgan is vice president of engineering for a company named Trivie. For the last few years, Trivie has worked with the American Heart Association to develop an app that offers training reinforcement (强化) for CPR and other lifesaving skills.
Before the launch of the app, Tyler had to review the app to ensure that everything looked good and was performing well. As part of his evaluation, Tyler went through every screen many times. This included reviewing many questions about first aid, such as the correct positions for giving chest compressions (按压) and rescue breaths. At the time, his only focus was making the app work perfectly. At least, he thought that was his only focus.
From testing and using the app, Tyler gained a great deal of first-aid knowledge, which is crucial information for saving people's lives in emergencies. Little did he know that these skills he had picked up by chance would soon become crucial in an unexpected moment of crisis.
The Morgan family were at a social gathering one day when little Beckham, Tyler’s son, saw a foam noodle (泡沫条) floating in an Olympic-sized pool. Because of lightning, the pool was off-limits, and saw little foot traffic. With no one looking, the boy went in after that foam noodle. He walked down a couple of steps and reached out for it. Instead, his little hand pushed it away. Beckham chased after the foam noodle again, only this time in water deeper than he could handle.
A teenager was the first to notice Beckham floating face down. She jumped in, pulled him out and placed him on his back alongside the edge of the pool. His body was lifeless, his face purple. She started screaming.
From about 30 feet away, Tyler heard a chilling scream off to his right. He turned towards it. Because of people in the way, all he could see was a pair of tiny legs wearing black swimming shorts and black shoes. Recognizing those shorts and shoes all too well, Tyler raced over.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

1.由上文“The Hedgehog’s Dilemma (刺猬困境) is a concept that explores the tension between the desire for close relationships and the risk of emotional harm. (“刺猬困境”是一个探讨亲密关系渴望与情感伤害风险之间矛盾的概念。德国哲学家叔本华用刺猬在寒冷冬日寻求温暖的隐喻来阐释:它们为了取暖而挤在一起,却很快因彼此的刺而感到疼痛;分开后又会再次感受到寒冷,最终找到一个既能取暖又不被刺伤的合适距离。)”可知,本空应总结刺猬困境所体现的人类情感困境。E选项“This reflects humans’ struggle to balance closeness and self-protection. (这反映了人类在亲密与自我保护之间的挣扎。)”能承接上文,符合题意,故选E。
2.由上文“So that’s the theory, but what does this look like in our everyday lives? (这就是理论,但在我们的日常生活中,这看起来是怎样的呢?)”以及下文“But should we let these experiences block us from letting our guard down in the future?(但我们应该让这些经历阻止我们在未来放松警惕吗?)” F选项“Many people share experiences of emotional pain from close relationships. (但我们应该让这些经历阻碍我们在未来放下戒备吗?Schopenhauer的建议可能是“是的”。)”和下文“For example,a review, which analyzed 148 studies involving 308,849 participants, found that individuals with strong social connections have a 50% increased likelihood of survival. (例如,一项对涉及308,849名参与者的148项研究的分析发现,具有强大社会联系的人的生存几率增加了50%。)”可知,本空应与上文形成转折,说明尽管有情感痛苦的风险,但现代研究提供了不同的视角,即社交联系对人类的重要性。B选项“However, modern research offers a different perspective. (然而,现代研究提供了不同的视角。)”能承上启下,符合题意,故选B。
4.由下文“Psychological therapist Hilary Sanders explains chat behaviors like isolation or anger can serve as survival strategies during childhood. (心理治疗师Hilary Sanders解释说,孤立或愤怒等聊天行为在儿童时期可以作为生存策略。)”可知,下文提到了一些防御性的反应,本空需总述防御反应的起源。C选项“Most of the defensive reactions originate from early experiences. (大多数防御性反应都源于早期经历。)”引出了下文对防御性反应的解释,符合题意,故选C。
5.由上文“Yes, there are risks in exposing our true selves and emotions, but unlike hedgehogs, humans don’t come with the quills built in. (是的,暴露真实的自我和情感是有风险的,但与刺猬不同,人类并不是天生就有刺的。)”可知,本空应强调人类与刺猬不同之处。G选项“We have the capacity to choose whom we trust and how we protect ourselves. (我们有能力选择信任谁以及如何保护自己。)”是对上文的解释,符合题意,故选G。
二、读后续写
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

Nobody knew what to do, except Tyler. Tyler reached his unconscious son and knelt down to perform CPR. Tyler was very nervous, but he knew he must do everything he could. He pushed hard and fast in the centre of his son’s chest, and also gave him rescue breaths. The brave teenage girl who pulled Beckham out of the water called for an ambulance. A few cycles later, Beckham suddenly coughed and started breathing again. Slowly, colour returned to the young boy’s face.
The ambulance arrived. Tyler helped the responders carry his son to the nearest hospital, where Beckham received a checkup. The doctor was amazed and happy to inform Tyler that Beckham didn’t suffer any lasting injuries and would recover soon. The boy was still frightened, and Tyler did his best to comfort him. Besides his family and friends, Tyler also shared the good news with the teenager and thanked her sincerely. Everyone was relieved to know that Beckham was safe and sound.
