They come from different parts of America. Country music comes from the southeast of America. But western music comes from the southwest of America. Another difference is the ways of playing them. Country music has a simple way of playing. It uses fewer instruments like guitars and harmonicas(口琴). But western music needs more and bigger instruments like trumpets(小号), trombones(长号)and so on. Country music is folk music. It’s the music that travels in the country. Men and women often play it. However, there is much dancing in western music and men often play it. It’s the capital city of Austria and the center of European classical music. In the 18th century a lot of musicians came to study and work in Vienna. In the Strauss family, there were two composers(作曲家) called Johann Strauss: the father and the son. The father, Johann Strauss the elder, wrote and played music for traditional dances, called the waltz. His dance music made him famous all over Europe. The son, Johann Strauss the younger, was also very successful and popular. He wrote over 150 waltzes. In 1867 he wrote The Blue Danube waltz. Mozart was another very important composer. He was born in Austria in 1756. Before he was six, he played not only the piano but also the violin. His family took him around Europe and he gave concerts in many cities. He wrote hundreds of wonderful pieces of music. But he became very poor and died in 1791 when he was only 35. Like Johann Strauss, father and son, he was a great European musician, and many people still think his music is perfect. 6.From Paragraph 1 we know that Vienna is ________. His mother raised her pale face and said in a weak voice, “Let me see the child, and die.” “You must not talk about dying yet,” the doctor said to her kindly. He gave her the child to hold. Lovingly, she kissed the baby on his head with her cold white lips, then fell back and died. “Poor dear!” said the nurse, without any expressions. The doctor began to put on his coat. The baby is weak and will probably have difficulties. He said. “Give him a little milk to keep him quiet.” Then he looked at the dead woman. “Where did the mother come from?” “She was brought here last night,” replied the old nurse. “She was found lying in the street. She must have walked a long way, for her shoes were worn to pieces. Where she came from, or what her name was, nobody knows.” “The old story,” the doctor said sadly, shook his head and left. And so Oliver was left with only the old nurse. Without clothes, he could have been the child of a king or a beggar (乞丐). But when the woman dressed him later in yellow cotton clothes, he looked exactly what he was an orphan in a workhouse, ready for a poor and hungry life alone. —Taken from Oliver Twist 11.Where was Oliver born? My friends are big fans of operas, rock music or pop music. Unlike them, I like listening to country music. “Country road, take me home, to the place I belong. West Virginia, mountain Mama… Take me home, country road.” This song, called Take Me Home, Country Roads, was by John Denver, a great country singer in the 1970s. My mum was good at singing it. Since I listened to her sing every night, I became good at it too. Later, my mum was ill and passed away. It was I who always sang it before sleeping time. At the age of 18, I entered Minnesota University and left the country, but this beautiful piece of country music always makes me think of those unforgettable days in my village. When I am tired, it takes me away for a while. This type of music is picturesque. The guitars and songs are like cars driving me to mountains and farms, to the everyday life and feelings of my family and friends in the village. I can see them clearly. It’s about love, friends, plants and so on. It’s also easy to understand, just like country people. The life in the country is simple, yet hard. We live in dark houses and eat simple food, so the words in the country music are often sad. Maybe once we sing out the sad things, we feel better. Thanks to the modern technology, we can record (记录) the music and take it everywhere. When the dark side of city life comes into my life, I put on my earphones and let my body and thoughts travel to where I was born, and then enjoy a fresh breath of country. That’s a place hugged by mountains, and touched by my mum, just as John Denver beautifully sang. 16.After ________, I began to sing the song before sleeping time. A.I saw John Denver B.I left the village C.my mum died D.I recorded the song 17.Country music is usually about ________. A.everyday life and feelings B.women’s sadness C.the lives of workers D.plants and animals 18.What does the writer mean by saying “This type of music is picturesque”? A.Only car drivers can listen to it, not anybody else. B.It never makes me tired or sleepy, just like coffee. C.It’s made by a country painter, not a composer or singer. D.It shows what the country looks like, just like a picture. 19.Why does the writer enjoy country music? ①It made him feel better about the hard life. ②It brought him back to his past life in the village. ③It’s easy to understand, just like country people. ④He doesn’t like the life of the modern city at all. A.①②③ B.①③④ C.①②④ D.②③④ 20.Which of the following is the best title for this passage? A.A big fan of John Denver B.My love for country music C.How to record country music D.The story about my family Country western music is very old. It came from the United States, Canada, Ireland and Great Britain. Country western music is a mixture (混合体) of music from all of these places. In the American west, the cowboys had to take care of cattle (牛). They had to watch them day and night, because the cattle were nervous (紧张的) and sometimes ran away. A cowboy’s life was lonely and dangerous. When he was alone in the desert with the cattle, he drank strong coffee to stay awake at night. He sang about the stars and the moon, about his family and his friends. The cattle listened to the cowboy and went to sleep. They did not run away if he sang beautiful music. The cowboys also sang music when they traveled to town. Sometimes they played the guitar. Later, they used violins and other instruments. Country western music describes (描述) life.
