Helen Cowan had decided to sit in the garden one evening when she heard a loud noise. As she walked to the front of the house, she saw some people crowding on the sidewalk outside.
As she walked toward the crowd, she saw a boy lying in a pool of blood near a crashed (撞毁的) motorbike. His leg was almost cut off at the knee. Luckily, when Helen asked about his situation, the young man could still talk, even though he was in great pain.
Helen knew about first aid and had first aid training. She ran back inside her home to get several thick towels to stop the bleeding.
As Helen returned to the boy with the towels, someone from the crowd had called an ambulance, but the young man was still bleeding heavily. “On my return, I could see that the other people were afraid to come forward and help. I used the towel as best I could to press the wound (伤口) until help arrived,” Helen said. Then she successfully controlled the bleeding and comforted the young man while waiting for help to arrive. Before long, the ambulance team arrived.
Unluckily, doctors weren’t able to save the man’s leg, but they did save his life—and Helen’s actions played a key role. Without the first aid skills Helen used, the results of this accident could have been far worse.

For the blind, guide dogs are important life partners. But not everyone can get one. In China, there are just over 400 ___36___ guide dogs for almost 20 million blind people.
Luckily, blind people may soon have a new ___37___ —a six-legged robot guide dog. “With six legs, the robot dog has no difficulty ___38___ anywhere. It can go upstairs and downstairs just like a real dog.” says Gao Feng, the head of the research team at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. “With cameras and AI technologies (技术), the robot dog is able ___39___ with people too.”
Gao also points out that training real guide dogs is expensive. ___40___, with the development of China’s robots, it’s possible to make the robot dog in large numbers at a low price.
Some blind volunteers have already tested the robot. Li Fei, a 41-year-old woman, says she feels ___41___ by how helpful it is. “Unlike real guide dogs, a robot guide dog never needs a rest or food. It can understand my requests and even talk to me. Its help may make life much ___42___.” Another volunteer called Zhu Sibin says, “I will probably buy the robot guide dog when it becomes available. Then I’ll do a lot of things ___43___.”
Robot guide dogs can provide help not only for the blind, but also for people with some other ___44___, such as the people using wheelchairs. “We can’t say robot dogs will ____45____ change these people’s lives, but they will play an important role in making the world a better place.” Gao says at last.
Hello, kids. Today we will learn some important rules for communication. Good communication is the secret of making friends and keeping friendship. So, let’s start!
Listen with your ears and your heart. When someone is talking to you, give full attention to them. Look at them, nod your head, and listen with your ears and your heart. ____46____
Think before you speak. Just like you look around before crossing the street, you need to think twice about something before you say it. Ask yourself, “Is it kind? Is it helpful?” ____47____ But if it’s not, keep it to yourself.
Use your words, not your fists (拳头). If you have a problem with someone, don’t solve it with your fists. ____48____ Your words can make a world of difference, while getting physical only makes things worse.
____49____ This rule encourages you to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and consider how you would like to be treated if you were in their position. If you treat others with love, kindness and respect, they will treat you the same way.
Be a friend, not a bully (欺凌者). Bullies are not fun, and they don’t have many friends. Instead, be a friend to others. ____50____ Together, we can make the world a better place.
Remember to put these suggestions into practice, and you’ll be a popular person soon!
A Sometimes fists work better than words.
B. If the answer is yes, feel free to share it!
C. Treat others the way you want to be treated.
D. Instead use your words to explain how you feel.
E. It shows that you care about what they are saying.
F. Stand up for those who need help and always be there to lend a hand.

Huang Xuhua, known as “Father of China’s Nuclear Submarine”, left us on February 6th, 2025 in Wuhan.
Born on March 12, 1926, in Guangdong Province, Huang grew up during the time when China faced many difficulties. This made him study very hard, hoping to use what he learned to make his country stronger. In 1945 he entered Shanghai Jiao Tong University to study shipbuilding. In the 1950s, China started to develop nuclear submarines. It was a very hard job. Huang was not afraid and stood up bravely. In 1958, Huang and his team began working on the top-secret “09 Project”. They were not allowed to keep in touch with anyone outside, not even their families. Huang couldn’t visit her mother for about 30 years. When he finally visited her, she was in her 90s.

At last, in 1970, China’s first nuclear submarine was built and tested successfully, making China the fifth country to own a nuclear submarine. Huang didn’t stop working after this success. Danny, Aunt Amelia’s friend, took us to the Tower of London after school. He told us a story on the way. It was scary and suddenly I felt really cold! We all thought the Tower of London was a great place for visitors. I wanted to take some photos for the competition but I didn’t have my phone. When I got home, I found it in Joe’s room.
