Some authors seemed to have a crystal ball (水晶球)! Their books could predict the future! Here are three amazing examples.
The Wreck of the Titan by MorganRobertson
THE PREDICTION
This is a story about the Titan, a giant passenger ship. Everyone says it’s “unsinkable”. But one night in April, disaster strikes. The ship hits an iceberg (冰山) and sinks into the freezing Atlantic Ocean. It gets worse— there aren’t enough lifeboats (救生船). Thousands of people die in the accident.
REAL LIFE
Does the Titan remind you of the Titanic? Fourteen years after the story was first published — on April 10, 1912—the famous ship set sail from England. Everyone thought it was “unsinkable”. But just four days later, it struck an iceberg and sank. And just like in Robertson’s novel, there weren’t enough lifeboats. In the end, more than 1,500 people went down with the ship into the Atlantic.
The MachineStops by E. M. Forster
THE PREDICTION
In this short story, people live underground. Thanks to the large Machine, everything can be done from home. People become afraid to meet each other in person because they rarely leave their rooms.
REAL LIFE
Does this world sound familiar? Yes, The MachineStops predicted life in the internet age. But the book came out in 1909. Television hadn’t been invented yet, and computers and smartphones weren’t even a dream!
The Foundation series by Isaa
THE PREDICTION
This sci-fi series was published in the early 1950s. Asimov invented a science called “psychohistory”. Researchers use societal trends and mathematics to accurately predict future events.
REAL LIFE
Today, “psychohistory” isn’t just science fiction— it’s everywhere. With large amounts of data (数据), AI-powered supercomputers can predict all sorts of things. They know what people like to read and which pizza they’ re going to order. They can even forecast how diseases will spread.

One recent afternoon at our favorite café, my baby daughter called out, “Tata, please bring igraca to folcadan!”
“Oh,” the woman behind us laughed. “That’s a mouthful.”
My husband told her that our daughter was asking him to bring her toys to the bathtub.
“What language is she speaking?” the stranger asked, curious.
I explained that my husband is from Dublin and speaks Irish (爱尔兰语). I was born in the former Yugoslavia and speak Serbian (塞尔维亚语). We met in New York and communicate in English. Now living in Wyoming, we’ re raising our child with all three languages. I’m still surprised at how many people laugh when they hear this. What they mean, I guess, is that neither Serbian nor Irish seems like essential languages for an American-born child. If a language’s value is measured by its global reach, I’m afraid both languages are near the bottom of the list.
But I’ve never looked at languages that way. My mother was born in Sarajevo and raised in Belgrade. She could, and still can, easily switch between Ekavian and Ijekavian, two Serbian dialects (方言). I’ve managed to be fluent in Serbian largely thanks to her belief that one must never lose his or her mother tongue.
As is true for many immigrants (外来移民), our language holds all things home-proverbs, jokes, family stories and even swear words (脏话). They make my mother and me feel whole, yet they are often lost in English translations. Serbian has also served as our secret code. When I want to share something emotional, I often say, “I don’t know how to express this.” My mother would reply, “probaj aternjim”—— try your mother tongue. Often, some long-forgotten word or phrase resurfaces from my memory.
All this has strengthened our relationship. Now I want the same for my daughter and me, and for her and her father. That’s why we’ re teaching her both my language and her father’s.
根据材料内容选择最佳答案。

Have you ever read Dune (《沙丘》) or watched the film? On the desert planet Arrakis, people wear specially designed suits. These suits collect sweat (汗) and urine (尿) and transform them into clean drinking water. This may sound like magic, but some water-stressed places in the world are already recycling wastewater in similar ways. Astronauts in space rely on recycled water, too.
But what about us?“We don’ t live in space or on a desert planet,”you might say. “Why would we ever need to turn our sweat and urine into drinking water? That’s yucky!”
Well, we might not start by recycling wastewater for drinking, but we can recycle it for other uses. Let’s think about flushing (冲) toilets, for example. Every day, huge amounts of clean fresh water are used to flush away human waste. This doesn’t seem like the wisest use of our limited fresh water, does it?
Some people are already rethinking such practices. They are looking for smarter ways to use water.
I recently visited Jenfelder Au, a new neighborhood in Hamburg, Germany, with an experimental wastewater reuse project. Traditionally, water flows into a city from outside, and wastewater is sent back to treatment plants far away. This new system separates wastewater into three streams to be reused locally.
Rainwater is collected to water the gardens. “Gray water” from kitchenand bathroom sinks is used to flush toilets And “black water” from toilets is sent to a local treatment plant to be turned into biogas (沼气). The system reduces water use by 30 percent and produces electricity for hundreds of homes.
Perhaps all new neighborhoods around the world could follow JenfelderAu’s example. The big challenge lies with old houses. It’s hard and expensive to replace their pipes and systems.
Still, Dr. Upmanu Lall, a water treatment expert from the U. S., holds a strong belief that more and more water will be saved. “It happened with lighting. Most homes and cities have updated to LED,” he said. “We update our homes and cities every 10 to 15 years. We can make use of this cycle and encourage people to try new water technologies. Over time, more and more people will start using water wisely.”

Why Some Trees Don’t Burn
When people think of wildfires, burning trees often come up. If you see a city burning while its trees remain standing, you might wonder if some-thing unusual is happening.
For weeks in January, large wildfires swept through Los Angeles. ____16____ As pictures of the fires spread across the internet, people noticed trees standing next to burned-out homes and cars. Some didn’t believe that a fire would leave trees untouched. “Is there a secret attack on L. A. homes?” they asked.
The simple answer is no. As plenty of pictures and videos from Los Angeles show, trees can and do catch fire. But it’s true that some did not burn. ____17____
It all comes down to moisture (湿度). “It’ s pretty obvious (易理解的) to me,” said Miranda Hart, a biology professor. “Trees are filled with thousands and thousands of liters of water.” ____18____ But if a tree full of water is next to something very dry, the dry thing will burn first and even change the course of the fire. “In that way, you can imagine the fire just going around the tree if there’s enough fuel on either side of it.” Prof. Hart added.
In addition, the tree type also matters. ____19____ Deciduous (每年落叶的) trees, for example, are less likely to burn. That’s because their leaves are moist and they contain less resin (树脂). Conifers (针叶树) like junipers, in comparison, are highly flammable.
In Los Angeles, palms are everywhere. ____20____ But some local fire departments have advised against planting more palms. Without proper care, these trees can become giant torches during wildfires and cause a lot of damage to people and objects nearby.
根据材料内容,从下面五个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项,使文章意思通顺、内容完整。
A. To be clear, trees do burn when fires are big and hot enough.
B. They’ve become a symbol of the city.

D. Certain trees are more likely to catch fire.
E. Scientists say there is a simple explanation for that.

My favorite traditional festival
Out of all the important festivals, the Dragon Boat Festival stands out as my favorite. It falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in memory of the poet—Qu Yuan.
As a traditional festival rich in cultural significance, it has a history of about 2,000 years. People celebrate it in various ways such as participating in or watching dragon boat races and eating the traditional food—zongzi.
From my point of view, we teenagers should make an effort to promote this festival. To begin with, we plan to make a poster about the festival’ s development, and put it up in our library.

As is true for many immigrants (外来移民) our language holds all things home-proverbs, jokes, family stories and even swear words (脏话).

But what about us?“We don’ t live in space or on a desert planet”you might say.
Rainwater is collected to water the gardens “Gray water” from kitchenand bathroom sinks is used to flush toilets And “black water” from toilets is sent to a local treatment plant to be turned into biogas (沼气).

C. They claimed (使丧失) many lives and destroyed a large number of homes.
D. Certain trees are more likely to catch fire.
E. Scientists say there is a simple explanation for that.
