“Ava, why don’t you read this paragraph for us?” Miss Margaret asked. Ava was nervous, but she stood up and began reading. She was nervous because she stammered (结结巴巴地说), “Em ... Emma was stand ... ing ...” Hearing this, some of the students started laughing.
After class, Ava made her way to the library, hoping to avoid those students and practise reading. She sat in a far corner of the library and started practising. However, after a number of tries, she realized that reading fluently was still too hard for her. She clearly needed a great deal of practice and help.
Aliza, one of her classmates who had been watching her for some time, went over to Ava and offered to help. From then on, every day whenever they had free time, Aliza would go to help Ava with her reading. A few weeks later, Ava began to read better and her confidence grew.
At the end of the semester, Miss Margaret held a reading test. When it was Ava’s turn, to everyone’s surprise, Ava read the paragraph fluently. Miss Margaret praised Ava on her improved reading ability. Aliza felt proud of Ava as well.
Ava and Aliza became good friends after that. Ava was very thankful to Aliza for everything she did. She also came to realize that there are always two types of people in the world: those who make fun of you and those who help you overcome your weaknesses (弱点). In the traditional Chinese farming calendar, the year is divided into 24 solar terms and there are six terms in each season. Grain Rain (谷雨), the sixth and final solar term of spring, usually falls in late April. Its name originates from the ancient saying, “Rain brings up the growth of hundreds of grains”, showing the importance of rainfall during this period for crop growth.
Grain Rain is not just about farming, it is also rich in cultural traditions. In southern China, people enjoy drinking spring tea on this day. The tea is full of vitamins and is believed to help people see better and keep bad luck away. Meanwhile, in northern China, people usually eat Toona sinensis (香椿). This seasonal vegetable is known for being good for the stomach.
Another interesting tradition belongs to coastal fishermen. For thousands of years, they have celebrated the Grain Rain Festival, which marks their first fishing trip of the year. During the festival, they pray for safety at sea and a successful fishing season.
Grain Rain is more than a sign of changing seasons. It also shows the close connection between humans and nature in Chinese culture. As spring turns to summer, people follow old customs while working with nature’s rhythm. This harmony reminds us to respect the Earth’s cycles, just as farmers and fishermen have done for centuries.

27. What is the main idea of the passage?

C The best time to grow crops in China. D. The dangers of fishing in the ocean.

On December 29, 2024, two samples of the CR450 high-speed train were shown in Beijing. This wonderful train can reach a test speed of 450 kilometers per hour and an operating speed of 400 km/h. When it starts to be used for business, it will be the quickest high-speed train in the world, much faster than the CR400 that runs at 350 km/h.
The China State Railway Group, which made this train, said that the CR450 has set new global standards in many important parts like speed, using less energy, making less noise, and braking performance (制动性能). Even though it goes at a higher speed, its braking is as good as the 350 km/h trains. This is because of the great engineering work that keeps the train steady and safe even when it’s fast.
The CR450 also cares a lot about making passengers feel comfortable. By using good noise-cutting technology, the inside of the train is as quiet as the 350 km/h trains. Also, What’s more, its running resistance (阻力) has been decreased by 22 percent and its weight has been reduced by 10 percent, which helps to save energy. The inside has been made again, with 4 percent more room, and there are better places to put luggage.
Two samples were shown on that day. They were made by different companies, but both want to give passengers a nice trip. The China State Railway Group will do more tests to make sure the train is okay for business use.
Since 2012, China’s railway has made many new things, like the Fuxing high-speed train, and has built a whole high-speed rail technology system. The CR450 shows China’s ability to make new things and its science power. It also shows the good points of China’s system, which helps the railway grow.
In the past 15 years, China has built a very big railway network, including the world’s largest and best high-speed rail network, which is very long. The CR450 is an important step in China’s railway growth.
28. We can infer from the passage that the CR450 ________.
A. costs more than the CR400 B. is more popular than the CR400
C. is safer than the CR400 D. has more seats than the CR400
29. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about the CR450?
A. Its braking performance. B. Its ticket price. C. Its energy saving. D. Its noise reduction.
30. Why is the carriages (车厢) of the CR450 high-speed train quieter than that of the 350 km/h trains?
A. Because it travels at a higher speed.
B. Because it uses advanced noise-reducing technology.
C. Because it is lighter.
D. Because it has less running resistance.
31. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The introduction of the CR450 high-speed train.
B. The history of China’s high-speed rail.
C. The comparison between the CR450 and other trains.
D. The future of China’s railway.

Huang Xuhua, a great Chinese scientist, passed away on February 6th, 2025. But his great deeds and strong spirit will always stay in our hearts and keep lighting up China’s way forward.
Huang Xuhua was born in Guangdong Province in 1926. When he was young, he saw the hard times of his country under foreign attacks. These sad memories made him study hard. He made a promise to make the country strong with his knowledge.
In the 1950s, China started to develop nuclear submarines (核潜艇). It was a very difficult job. Huang Xuhua was not afraid and stood up bravely. At that time, there was not much advanced technology or many resources. It was like climbing a very steep mountain. But he and his team took on this challenge. To keep the project secret, they stopped contacting (联络) the outside world, even their families. Huang Xuhua left his hometown for many years.
During the design process they met a lot of problems. For example, designing a nuclear reactor was really hard. They couldn’t get help from foreign experts, so they could only depend on their own research. They used simple tools like abacuses and slide rules to calculate and do experiments with great effort. Another important problem was to make sure the submarine was stable underwater. After many simulations and tests, they gradually overcame these problems.
Finally, in the 1970s, China’s first nuclear submarine was built and tested successfully. This made China one of the few countries that had this ability. 【原文】Cooking should be considered as art, just like any other activity which requires skills and knowledge. The following will explain why cooking should be taught in schools. Cooking helps develop a life skill. Students can depend on themselves when they are at home alone. Also, they can know how to make a living in the future. And cooking helps find future jobs. When schools offer cooking lessons, students will be interested in taking cooking as a job. What’s more, cooking avoids wasting money. Students always used much money to buy ready made food, while they could prepare a nice meal with less cost. Cooking betters math’s learning. Students even learn to cook by following the instructions in a standard. It means there is no more or less.

During the design process, they met a lot of problems.
Huang Xuhua didn’t stop after the big success. He went on to help with the development of submarine technology. His hard work and devotion won him many honors, including the “Medal of the Republic” (共和国勋章) in 2019.

How to Deal with the Exam Stress
We students are very busy with schoolwork and in the face of many exams every school day. Everyone may have the exam stress. A little stress can be good for us. If we have proper stress, we can think actively and work harder. So we can pass the exam easily.
However, if we have too much stress, we can’t sleep well at night and we may feel tired or sleepy in class. We may be afraid of exams too much and fail in the end.
In my opinion, we’d better plan and prepare everything well to deal with stress. We should also have some good habits.
