“I can’t connect with your characters.” I kept hearing the same feedback and was unable to understand why and not sure what to do. I was a character-driven writer. How could I mess up the one thing I was supposed to be good at? I was determined to tell my agent that these characters were real. After all, I knew they were real. My main character Lotus had lived inside me for years. I just needed to describe her on the page.
I wrote and edited for a year, trying to respond to this agent’s feedback. But Lotus’ personality began to disappear. I tried to have her make “better” decisions, wear smarter fashion, and have more friends, as my agent said she acted “childish” and was “lonely”. And when this agent finally parted ways with me, I felt like I had failed. Now with time and distance, I realize I tried to fit Lotus into a normal style to please my agent. And as a result, Lotus lost her personality.
When that agent discouraged me from writing Lotus as autistic (自闭的), he said that would make Lotus seem more “vulnerable (脆弱的)”. I didn’t want Lotus to seem vulnerable. Lotus’ autism is what makes her powerful, I tried to explain. But from a normal perspective, Lotus’ autism could only be seen as a weakness.
Unsure of how to tell my agent of the strength and power autistic women hold, I began to write Lotus as “normal”. And I failed. After all, what do I know about being normal? My whole life, autism was my nature. Not being diagnosed until 2020, I thought the way I saw the world was “normal”.
My current agent encourages me to write from my neurodivergent (神经多样性的) experience. With this invitation, I revisited Lotus and saw her the way I first wrote her. And when I did, the characters and the story began to make more sense.
Knowing my characters as neurodivergent not only gives me joy as a writer, but it has produced my strongest writing. For so long, I’ve fought against the advice to “write what I know”, partly because I didn’t know what I actually knew. I didn’t know I was neurodivergent. But as I explored my life experience, my writing is stronger.
There is a power to our life experience. It’s not a limitation on our craft, but a swinging open of the gates.
4. How did the author feel when receiving the repeated response from the first agent?
A. Indifferent. B. Confused.
C. Removed. D. Desperate.
5. Why did Lotus’s personality lose?
A. Because Lotus no longer lived inside the author.
B. Because Lotus was considered childish and lonely.
C. Because the first agent failed to sympathize with Lotus.
D. Because the author attempted to make the first agent satisfied.
6. What do we know about the author?
A. She regretted parting with the first agent.
B. She owed her success in life to autism.
C. She knew about her autism in early years.
D. She was inspired by her autistic experience.
7. What does the author want to express in the last paragraph?
A. Hold your dream regardless of discouragement.
B. Following authority is the barrier to success.
C. Be honest to yourself and write from your heart.
D. Living with a disease inspires masterpieces.
C
Why are some of us good at math, or writing, while others excel at art or basketball? What causes the differences? Are they largely determined by the genes (nature) we inherit (遗传) from our parents? How much does the social environment (nurture) have to do with it? If you were a scientist interested in these questions, wouldn’t you love to study identical twins?
Over the last 10 years, a team of scientists led by psychologist Thomas J. Bouchard Jr. has studied about 65 pairs of identical twins who were raised apart. The scientists bring each pair of twins to the University of Minnesota for a week of intensive testing. They record the twins’ height, weight, eye color, ear shape, and head length. Meanwhile, they give the twins IQ and personality tests.
Bouchard’s team has been startled by the similarities between twins raised apart. The twins often have surprisingly similar gestures and postures, for instance. And they have led remarkably similar lives. Adult identical twins also tend to have similar medical histories, developing the eye disease glaucoma at the same time, for example.
“The coincidences are not surprising,” some critics of the Minnesota study say. They argue that everyone’s life has so many details that a number of coincidences are bound to exist. What’s more, for every coincidence discovered by a pair of identical twins raised apart, the critics could point to a vast number of undiscovered differences.
According to Bouchard, they find that genes play a big part in shaping our personalities-helping to determine whether we respect tradition and like to follow rules or not. The team has reported that intelligence also seems to be influenced much more by genes than by environment. Despite being raised by different families, separated identical twins earned identical or nearly identical scores on adult intelligence tests.
Other scientists, however, disagree. “How can you study whether intelligence is inherited when there are so many different ways just to define intelligence?” The problem applies to other traits (特征), they say.
Bouchard himself makes the point that even the most closely matched twins are different from each other. So even though genes may have a strong influence over our lives, they’re not the only influence. Our day-to-day experiences help to shape us too.
8. Why are scientists so interested in studying identical twins raised apart in different environments?
A. Because it can be studied with a week of intensive testing.
B. Because this group of twins have the most striking similarities.
C. Because it is a good way to measure the effects of nature and nurture.
D. Because there has already been a lot of research on identical twins raised together.
9. What does the underlined word “excel” probably mean in Para.1?
A. shine. B. sink. C. resolve. D. consist.
10. Which of the following statements would Bouchard agree to?
A. Similarities go hand in hand with differences.
B. Nature has a notable influence over our lives.
C. Intelligence is something inherited rather than acquired.
D. Environment plays a bigger part in personal development.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Inherited Genes Favor Twins
B. Environment Tells Apart Twins
C. Science Looks Twice at Twins
D. Physical Traits Come to Twins

Researchers at the University of Sussex have used AI to look at online records from Facebook, Twitter, Google, and Bing to see how much hunting and trading of bats is happening around the world. They want to use this information to help protect bats better.
The team developed an automated system which allowed them to conduct large scale searches across multiple platforms. With the help of AI, they sorted through many results to find important details. Any stories or examples of people using bats were used to create a big list of “bat use records. ”
To better understand threats to bats, the team compared online records with academic records, knowing that data and information shared online is influenced by factors including global events and where people have access to the Internet.
Lead author, Bronwen Hunter at the University of Sussex says: “Using data sources like this provides a low-cost way to help us understand threats to wildlife globally. AI allowed us to access the data and complete a global analysis, which isn’t something we would have been able to achieve using traditional field studies. ”
“Another benefit of using online data combined with automated data filtering is that more information can be got in real-time, ensuring that we can keep up to date with current threats. ”
Bats are about one-fifth of all mammal species in the world and play a very important role in nature. They help plants grow by spreading seeds, and they also eat pests. More than half of bat species are thought to be in danger of extinction or we don’t have enough information about them, according to the International Union for Nature Conservation(IUCN). We know less about how hunting and trading affect bats compared to other animals. However, their low reproductive rates and relatively short lifespans keep them at a risk of survival crisis to a degree more commonly seen in much larger mammals such as chimpanzees, bears, or lions.
Using information from the Internet to learn more about how bats are being used can help us find out which bat populations need the most help. This information can also be used to update global assessments, like the IUCN Red List.
12. How did the team use AI to gather relevant data for their study?
A. By conducting interviews with experts in the field.
B. By manually searching through social media posts.
C. By sorting through results across different platforms.
D. By using research data only from academic records.
13. Which is the advantage of using online data according to Bronwen Hunter?
A. It reduces the cost of conducting wildlife studies. B. It allows for real-time updates on wildlife threats.
C. It enables the data collection from remote areas. D. It increases the accuracy of the field studies.
14. Why might bats be easily endangered by threats?
A. They are easily hunted for economic value. B. They are more affected by natural disasters.
C. They have a lower birth rate and lifespan. D. They depend on some specific habitats.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Bats lives are in greater danger. B. Bats hunting should be banned.
C. AI provides help to wildlife protection. D. AI helps identify global threats to bats.

My brother Jack and I went to visit my Aunt, who lived very near the beach. I was just 15 then and Jack 5. We loved going to the beach but normally always went with mom or dad. On our way back, we decided to walk along the beach instead of taking the taxi back home. We did not tell our aunt about all this, as she might refuse.
So off we ran to the beach, where we played happily on the sand, making little sand castles and collecting sea shells. We wrote our names on the sand only to be erased by the coming waves. We splashed (泼) water on each other’s faces, running and laughing. We had so much fun. Time passes so quickly when one is happy. Our games continued. The tide (潮水) was coming in but we were just unaware of anything.
It was beginning to get dark and we decided to move on. At one point we were shocked to see that we could not go any further as the waters had covered the place ahead. With fear we turned back. But to our surprise, the waters behind us had also touched the shore. Now we were left on a small dry patch (片) of land surrounded by water on all sides. We could not move forward, nor go back. Our only hope was a tall wall with huge rocks nearby. Climbing over it, we could get onto the road and take a taxi home.
Despite the fear, we didn’t give up, though. I decided to get Jack across the wall first. I picked him up and tried my best to get him across the wall, but we slipped (打滑) and fell from the rock into the water. He cried in pain and fear. I realized that on our own, we could never cross that big wall. Now only help from outside could save us. The ever rising water was making us frightened more and more.

B
C She knew about her autism in early years.
B 5. D 6. D 7. C
根据第一段中“I kept hearing the same feedback and was unable to understand why and not sure what to do. (我不断听到同样的反馈,却不明白为什么,也不确定该怎么做)”可知,作者收到首位经纪人反复的反馈时感到困惑。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Now with time and distance, I realize I tried to fit Lotus into a normal style to please my agent. And as a result, Lotus lost her personality. (现在随着时间推移和冷静思考,我意识到我试图让Lotus符合一种常规风格来取悦我的经纪人。结果,Lotus失去了她的个性)”可知,Lotus失去个性是因为作者试图让首位经纪人满意。故选D项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Unsure of how to tell my agent of the strength and power autistic women hold, I began to write Lotus as “normal”. And I failed. After all, what do I know about being normal? My whole life, autism was my nature. Not being diagnosed until 2020, I thought the way I saw the world was ‘normal’.(我不知道如何告诉我的经纪人自闭症女性所拥有的力量和力量,我开始把Lotus写为“正常”。我失败了。毕竟,我怎么知道什么是正常人呢?在我的一生中,自闭症是我的天性。直到2020年才被确诊,我认为我看待世界的方式是“正常的”)”、第五段中“My current agent encourages me to write from my neurodivergent (神经多样性的) experience. With this invitation, I revisited Lotus and saw her the way I first wrote her. And when I did, the characters and the story began to make more sense. (我现在的经纪人鼓励我从我的神经多样性经历中进行写作。在这个启发下,我重新审视了Lotus,看到了我最初塑造她的样子。当我这样做时,角色和故事开始变得更有意义)”和第六段中“Knowing my characters as neurodivergent not only gives me joy as a writer, but it has produced my strongest writing. (了解到我的角色具有神经多样性,不仅给我作为作家带来了快乐,还让我写出了最出色的作品)”可知,作者根据自己神经多样性经历进行写作,从自己自闭的经历中获得了灵感。故选D项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“There is a power to our life experience. It’s not a limitation on our craft, but a swinging open of the gates. (我们的生活经历蕴含着一种力量。它不是我们写作技巧的限制,而是一扇敞开的大门)”可知,作者鼓励读者认识到自己的生活经验的力量,并从中汲取创作的灵感。因此,作者想要表达的是要对自己诚实,从内心出发写作。故选C项。
The twins often have surprisingly similar gestures and postures for instance.
C 9. A 10. B 11. C

根据第一段“Why are some of us good at math, or writing, while others excel at art or basketball? What causes the differences? Are they largely determined by the genes (nature) we inherit (遗传) from our parents? How much does the social environment (nurture) have to do with it? If you were a scientist interested in these questions, wouldn’t you love to study identical twins?(为什么我们中的一些人在数学或写作方面表现出色,而另一些人在艺术或篮球方面表现出色呢?
根据划线词前的并列连词while及前面分句“Why are some of us good at math, or writing(为什么我们中的一些人在数学或写作方面表现出色)”可推测,划线词与be good at意思相近,是“擅长,在……方面优秀”的意思,此处在举例说明人们所擅长的方面是存在差异的,有的人擅长数学或写作,而有的人擅长美术或篮球。shine也可表示“出色”的意思。故选A项。
根据第三段“The twins often have surprisingly similar gestures and postures, for instance. And they have led remarkably similar lives. Adult identical twins also tend to have similar medical histories, developing the eye disease glaucoma at the same time, for example.(例如,这些双胞胎常常有着惊人相似的手势和姿势。他们的生活轨迹也非常相似。成年同卵双胞胎还倾向于有相似的病史,例如同时患上青光眼)”,第五段“According to Bouchard, they find that genes play a big part in shaping our personalities-helping to determine whether we respect tradition and like to follow rules or not. The team has reported that intelligence also seems to be influenced much more by genes than by environment.(根据布查德的说法,他们发现基因在塑造我们个性方面起着重要作用——帮助决定我们是否尊重传统以及是否喜欢遵守规则。该团队报告称,智力似乎也更多地受到基因的影响,而不是环境)”及最后一段“So even though genes may have a strong influence over our lives(因此,尽管基因可能对我们的生活有很强的影响)”可知,Bouchard认为基因天性对人们的生活有着极其显要的影响。故选B项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Over the last 10 years, a team of scientists led by psychologist Thomas J. Bouchard Jr. has studied about 65 pairs of identical twins who were raised apart. The scientists bring each pair of twins to the University of Minnesota for a week of intensive testing. They record the twins’ height, weight, eye color, ear shape, and head length. Meanwhile, they give the twins IQ and personality tests.(在过去十年中,由心理学家托马斯·J·布查德(Thomas J. Bouchard Jr.)领导的科学家团队研究了大约65对分开抚养的同卵双胞胎。
D
C 13. B 14. C 15. D
根据第二段“The team developed an automated system which allowed them to conduct large scale searches across multiple platforms. With the help of AI, they sorted through many results to find important details. Any stories or examples of people using bats were used to create a big list of “bat use records. (该团队开发了一个自动化系统,使他们能够在多个平台上进行大规模搜索。在人工智能的帮助下,他们对许多结果进行了分类,以找到重要的细节。人们使用蝙蝠的任何故事或例子都被用来创建一个“蝙蝠使用记录”的大列表。)”可知,团队利用 AI 在不同平台筛选结果来收集相关数据。故选C。
13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“Another benefit of using online data combined with automated data filtering is that more information can be got in real-time, ensuring that we can keep up to date with current threats. (使用在线数据与自动数据过滤相结合的另一个好处是,可以实时获得更多信息,确保我们能够及时了解当前的威胁。)”可知,使用在线数据的一个好处是可以实时获取信息,及时了解当前威胁。故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段“However, their low reproductive rates and relatively short lifespans keep them at a risk of survival crisis to a degree more commonly seen in much larger mammals such as chimpanzees, bears, or lions. (然而,它们的低繁殖率和相对较短的寿命使它们面临生存危机的风险,这种风险在黑猩猩、熊或狮子等大型哺乳动物中更为常见。)”可知,蝙蝠繁殖率低、寿命长的特点使它们更容易受到威胁。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Researchers at the University of Sussex have used AI to look at online records from Facebook, Twitter, Google, and Bing to see how much hunting and trading of bats is happening around the world.
Maybe you are probably getting an earful (训斥) from your inner voice. ___16___. Here are several ways to change your self- talk script and to use your inner voices to perform better.
Listen critically to your inner critic
In high- pressure situations, self- talk is often critical. Instead of thinking deliberately and logically, our inner voices are caused by emotion. That influences everything from how we talk to ourselves to our behaviors. ___17___. And when your inner voices start to fill with words of frustration and discouragement, pause the conversation as you consider ways to change it.
Create psychological distance from yourself
One effective way to manage stress is to create psychological distance. This can be achieved by using second- or third- person pronouns when referring to the situation. Asking yourself,“ Why are you feeling so stressed?” is one way to create the psychological distance you need to regulate emotion. ___18___.
Fit your conversation to your goal
___19___. Instructional self- talk like“ shoulders back” or“ keep the left arm straight” works to improve technique. Motivational self-talk such as“ you’ve got this” or“ keep going” can help with confidence, strength, or endurance. It’s important to be aware of the type of self-talk you are using and make sure it aligns with your goals and needs.
___20___
Demeaning or negative self- talk is only going to increase your stress and hold you back. Instead, speak compassionately to yourself — just as you would to a friend. Recreate negative messages to include positive content. “I am not good at this.” can be changed to“ Relax. You are prepared for this.” “I don’t know what to say.” can be replaced by“ Remember to smile and ask good questions.”
A. Treat yourself as a friend
B. Make as many friends as possible
C. Using instructional language is appropriate
D. Different types of self- talk work best for specific goals
E. So your first step is to listen critically to what you are saying to yourself
F. Often, negative comments in your head make it difficult for you to succeed
G. This way you might find your task an interesting challenge instead of a threat
F 17. E 18. G 19. D 20. A
根据空前句“Maybe you are probably getting an earful (训斥) from your inner voice.(也许你可能听到了内心训斥的声音)”提到你可能从内心的声音中听到了长时间的数落;空后“Here are several ways to change your self- talk script and to use your inner voices to perform better.(这里有几个方法来改变你的自我对话脚本,用你内心的声音来表现得更好。)” F项中的“ negative comments in your head”与空前句中的“ an earful from your inner voice”相呼应,且其中的“ make it difficult for you to succeed”与空后句中的“ perform better”相呼应。 因此,F选项“Often, negative comments in your head make it difficult for you to succeed(通常,你头脑中的负面评论会让你很难成功)”衔接上下文。故选F。
根据后文“And when your inner voices start to fill with words of frustration and discouragement, pause the conversation as you consider ways to change it.(当你内心的声音开始充满沮丧和沮丧时,暂停谈话,考虑改变它的方法)”中提取的关系词“And”可知,设空处与空后句构成并列关系。空前句“In high- pressure situations, self- talk is often critical. Instead of thinking deliberately and logically, our inner voices are caused by emotion. That influences everything from how we talk to ourselves to our behaviors.(在压力很大的情况下,自言自语往往是至关重要的。我们内心的声音是由情感引起的,而不是有意识地、合乎逻辑地思考。这影响了从我们如何自言自语到我们的行为)”与内心的声音的消极影响相关,空后句与应对内心的声音的做法有关。根据设空处与空后句的并列关系可知,设空处锁定在E项。E项还与空前句构成因果关系,且该项中的“critically”是对小标题中的“critically”和段首句中的“critical”的原词及同根词复现。E选项“So your first step is to listen critically to what you are saying to yourself(因此,你的第一步是批判性地倾听你对自己说的话)”符合语境。故选E。
根据空前内容“One effective way to manage stress is to create psychological distance. This can be achieved by using second- or third- person pronouns when referring to the situation. Asking yourself,“ Why are you feeling so stressed?” is one way to create the psychological distance you need to regulate emotion.(管理压力的一个有效方法是创造心理距离。这可以通过使用第二人称或第三人称代词来实现。问自己:“为什么你感到这么有压力?”是一种创造心理距离的方法,你需要这种距离来调节情绪)”提到应对压力的一个有效方法是创造心理距离,并举例说明“问自己‘为什么你感到压力如此之大?’”是一种创造调节情绪所需的心理距离的方法。因此,设空处位于段尾,应能承接上文,与空前句提到的创造心理距离的方法相关,G选项“This way you might find your task an interesting challenge instead of a threat(这样你会发现你的任务是一个有趣的挑战而不是威胁)”说明了使用该方法的好处,且其中的“ This way”指代的正是空前句中的“Asking yourself, “Why are you feeling so stressed?””。
因此,设空处也应与此相关,故将答案锁定在D选项“Different types of self- talk work best for specific goals(不同类型的自言自语对特定的目标效果最好)”,其中的“goals”是对小标题中的“goal”的同词复现。故选D。
根据本段内容“Demeaning or negative self- talk is only going to increase your stress and hold you back. Instead, speak compassionately to yourself — just as you would to a friend. Recreate negative messages to include positive content. “I am not good at this.” can be changed to“ Relax. You are prepared for this.” “I don’t know what to say.” can be replaced by“ Remember to smile and ask good questions.”(贬低或消极的自言自语只会增加你的压力,阻碍你前进。相反,你应该同情地对自己说话——就像对朋友说话一样。重新创造负面信息以包含积极内容。“我不擅长这个。可以改成“放轻松。”你已经准备好了。”“我不知道该说什么。可以用“记得微笑,问好问题”来代替)”可知,本段建议人们不要进行贬低性的或消极的自我对话,而要像对待朋友那样对自己说积极的话,A选项“Treat yourself as a friend(把自己当成朋友)”能很好地概括本段主旨。故选A。

When Peter Kahn became an English teacher, he was terrified of teaching poetry.
“Poetry was my least favorite subject as a student, and my least favorite subject to ____21____ as a teacher,” he says. “I was ____22____ at it.” So he asked a friend of his for help, who ____23____ the idea of a poetry competition in which poets ____24____ spoken-word poetry before a live audience.
“The student with the lowest grade in my class ended up winning it,” says Kahn. “And I realized this was something ____25____.”
That was the year 1999. ____26____ by the club’s potential to appeal to students, Kahn created an after-school spoken-word club at a high school. And for over 20 years, the club has created ____27____ for students to participate in storytelling. Many students have gone on to become ____28____ poets, scholars, or even National Youth Poet Winners.
“‘____29____ the microphone’ was something we originally said in the club when people were talking in the audience, and it became a _____30_____ for the club,” says Dan Sullivan, who went from planning to _____31_____ school on his 17th birthday to starring in and helping set up the club in 1999.
For Kahn, the _____32_____ was all about helping students like Sullivan at the time who just didn’t _____33_____ school. Now he hopes the club can take this power of poetry and move it beyond the _____34_____ so that teachers like him who are _____35_____ of poetry will be able to get themselves — and their students — excited about it.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

After saying thanks again and again to the two men, we returned home.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
In despair, we shouted for help, and miracle happened. Two kind men who were passing by heard our cries. They quickly came to our rescue, assessing the situation with calmness. One of them, a tall man with a reassuring voice, said, “Don’t worry, boys. We’ll get you out of here safely.” They found a long branch nearby and used it as a bridge to reach us. The other man, who had a strong build, carefully lifted Jack first and then helped me climb over the wall. Their determination and bravery gave us hope when we thought all was lost.
After saying thanks again and again to the two men, we returned home. To our surprise, we found that our aunt was actually in our house, waiting anxiously. When she saw us safe, she hugged us tightly, tears of relief in her eyes. We told her what had happened and how those two strangers had saved us. She scolded us gently for not telling her our plan but also praised the men’s kindness. It was a lesson I would never forget — the power of kindness and the importance of staying calm in danger.
