Amsterdam is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, famous for its beautiful canals, top art museums, cycling culture and so on. It is the capital city of the Netherlands and often referred to as the “Venice of the North” because of its expansive system of bridges and canals. Here are some of the key points to remember as you plan your trip to Amsterdam.
Must-See Attractions
Most visitors begin their Amsterdam adventure in the Old Centre, which is full of traditional architecture, shopping centers, and coffee shops. You’ll also want to check out Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter in the South District, which is great for shopping at the Albert Cuyp Market and having a picnic in the Vondelpark. The top museums to visit there are the Rijksmusuem, the Ann Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum.
If You Have Time
There are several other unique districts in Amsterdam, and you should try to explore as many of them as time allows. The Canal Ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was originally built to attract wealthy home owners and is a center for celebrity spotting and nightlife today. The Plantage area has most of the city’s museums and the botanical gardens.
Money Saving Tips
●Unless you really want to see the tulips(郁金香) blooming, avoid booking between mid-March and mid-May. This is when hotel and flight prices rise.
●Look for accommodations in Amsterdam’s South District, where rates are generally cheaper than in the city center.
●Buy train tickets at the machine instead of the counter to save a bit of money.
●Instead of hiring a tour guide, hop on a canal boat. They’re inexpensive and will give you a unique point of view of the city.
Check out our homepage to view price comparisons for flights, hotels, and rental cars before you book.

My parents never once spoke of the stress of having to pay for college, but I knew enough to appreciate that it was there. Therefore, when my French teacher announced that she’d be leading an optional class trip to Paris over one of our breaks for those who could come up with the money to do it, I didn’t even bother to raise the issue at home.
Yet one evening my parents sat me down, looking puzzled. My mom had learned about the France trip through my friend’s mom.
“Why didn’t you tell us?” she said.
“Because it’s too much money.”
“That’s actually not for you to decide, Michelle,” my dad said gently, almost offended.
“And how are we supposed to decide, if we don’t even know about it?”
I looked at them both, unsure of what to say. My mother glanced at me, her eyes soft. My father had changed out of his work uniform and into a clean white shirt. They were in their early forties then, married nearly twenty years. Neither one of them had ever vacationed in Europe. They never took beach trips or went out to dinner. They didn’t own a house. We were their investment, me and my brother. Everything went into us.
A few months later, I boarded a flight to Paris with my teacher and a dozen or so of my classmates from Whitney Young. We would stay in a hostel, tour the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. We’d buy snacks from stands on the street and walk along the banks of the Seine. We’d speak French like a bunch of high school kids from Chicago, but we’d at least speak French.
As the plane pulled away from its gate that day, I looked out my window and back at the airport, knowing that my mother stood somewhere behind its black-glass windows, dressed in her winter coat and waving me on. I remember all the details. I remember the jet engines firing, shockingly loud. And then we were rattling down the runway and beginning to tilt upward as the acceleration seized my chest and pressed me backward into my seat for that strange, in-between moment that comes before finally you feel lifted.
4. Why didn’t the author tell her parents about the France trip?
A. She didn’t get on well with her parents.
B. She thought her parents couldn’t afford it.
C. She wanted to save money for her college.
D. She had already had plans for the vacation.
5. What are the author’s parents like?
A. Strict and ambitious. B. Devoted but stubborn.
C. Loving and supportive. D. Caring but picky.
6. What would the author do in Paris?
A. Visit a few tourist sites. B. Take French courses.
C. Practice French with local kids. D. Go on a boat tour on the Seine.
7. What does the author want to show by mentioning the take-off of her flight?
A. The eagerness of pursuing her dream.
B. The sadness of leaving her mother.
C. Her nervousness about the future.
D. Her deep impression of the experience.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. A 7. D

Kenya’s wildlife officials have made a free mobile phone app, Makenya, to help track wild animals in the country.
Kenya is home to nearly 400 species of mammals (哺乳动物). Officials say it is getting more difficult to protect them, as climate change and human activities damage their natural environment.
The app lets any user who sees a wild mammal identify (识别) it and give its location . Users can also give other details. “You can also add the behavior. When you see those animals, what are they doing? Are they resting? Are they running away? Are they feeding? What are they doing at the moment you see them? " said Dr. Simon Musila, a wildlife researcher.
According to Musila, there is a need to have more people use the app to get more information about the animals. This can help the small number of mammal experts in Kenya. The experts have kept records of the animals’ changing environments and living conditions. Many people, including safari (游猎) guides, visitors, students or anyone who goes out and sees the animals could also use the app. They can upload images and add details such as the number of mammals and their exact locations.
Samson Onyuok, one of the app users, said he is proud to help protect animals in his country. As a Kenyan, that is his way of contributing to the conservation initiatives. Users like him have reported more than 2, 500 mammal sightings in two months.
Experts say that while Africa is not the cause of much climate change, it is badly affected by it. Dr. Philip Muruthi, vice president of the African wildlife Foundation said that the birth rate of rare mammals and the survival rate of young ones are dropping.
“It is very hard to benefit or manage what you don’t know,” he said. “That is why this is so important. It is going to tell us which species we have, where they are, and maybe which ones are highly endangered, what we need to do about them. And especially not just the big things but also the small things, like the bats.”
8. What are users of Makenya advised to do?
A. Keep the running animals in sight
B. Feed the hungry animals in the wild
C. Upload the details of the spotted animals
D. Take a picture with the spotted animals
9. Which of the following can best describe Samson Onyuok?
A. Hardworking B. Responsible C. Careful D. Patient
10. Why does Dr. Philip Muruthi consider the app significant?
A. It is internationally supported B. It costs Kenyan users just a little
C. It is developed by Kenyan officials D. It presents overall cases of animals in Kenya
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. Endangered animals in Kenya B. Research on animal tracking
C. High-technology for animal protection D. Ways to protect animals
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. C

D
It was in a large fish market northwest of Mumbai. Shark fins were sent onto tables. Tens of millions of sharks are killed for the fin trade every year, and a quarter of the world’s sharks, rays, and ghost sharks are in danger. The international trade in many animals is not allowed, but it can be nearly impossible for wildlife officials to tell whether the fins here are from protected animals.
The samples could be sent to a lab for DNA testing, but the test would take a full day. But Shaili Johri, a biology researcher at San Diego State University, had a handheld device that can say what animals a part belongs to in a short time, using only a small tissue (组织) sample. The gene sequencing (基因测序) done by the MinION device, which she was testing out at the fish market, is a promising new tool to help fight the illegal shark fin trade.
Johri published a study with another author in the journal Scientific Reports detailing the first use of the new device for keeping sharks and other wild animals safe from attacks. The smartphone-sized device is made by UK-based Oxford Nanopore Technologies. It has been used for the recognition of Ebola virus. It is also likely to help prevent wildlife crime.
It requires a small tissue sample and a laptop. It can show the result in three or four hours. But it has one downside. The device itself costs $1,000, including two initial cartridges (盒). Every subsequent sequencing cartridge, which can do 12 samples at once, costs an extra $500. That’s a roughly $42 per sample. The traditional DNA analysis method costs as little as $ 5 a sample.
Hollie Booth, a sharks and rays advisor, says the MinION could have lots of practical uses, including controlling wildlife trade across countries or illegal fishing in markets. And the possibilities of this device aren’t just limited to sharks. It could be used to recognize elephant ivory, pangolin scales (穿山甲鳞片) and various other wildlife.
12. What did Johri use the MinION for at the fish market?
A. Saving sharks from losing their fins.
B. Discovering sharks’ gene sequences.
C. Collecting tissue from endangered fish.
D. Recognizing whether a fin belongs to a shark.
13. What does the study mainly tell us about the MinION?
A. How it can help reduce wildlife crime.
B. Its use for wildlife protection purposes.
C. How it was developed by a UK company.
D. Its influence on different scientific fields
14. What is a disadvantage of the MinION?
A. It is expensive. B. It requires more time.
C. It makes mistakes at times. D. It is inconvenient to use.
15. What does Hollie Booth probably think of the MinION?
A. It will save many kinds of animals.
B. It should be used after further research.
C. It must make technological improvements.
D. It needs more support from wildlife officials.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. A
根据第二段“But Shaili Johri, a biology researcher at San Diego State University, had a handheld device that can say what animals a part belongs to in a short time, using only a small tissue (组织) sample. The gene sequencing (基因测序) done by the MinION device, which she was testing out at the fish market, is a promising new tool to help fight the illegal shark fin trade(但圣地亚哥州立大学的生物学研究员Shaili Johri有一个手持设备,只需使用一个小的组织样本,就可以在短时间内识别出这个部位属于什么动物。她正在鱼类市场测试的MinION设备进行的基因测序是一种很有前途的新工具,有助于打击非法鱼翅贸易)”可知,Johri在鱼市上使用MinION辨别鱼鳍是否属于鲨鱼。故选D项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Johri published a study with another author in the journal Scientific Reports detailing the first use of the new device for keeping sharks and other wild animals safe from attacks(Johri在《科学报告》杂志上与另一位作者发表了一项研究,详细介绍了首次使用这种新设备来保护鲨鱼和其他野生动物免受攻击)”可知,这项研究主要告诉我们MinION被用于保护野生动物。故选B项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“The device itself costs $1,000, including two initial cartridges (盒). Every subsequent sequencing cartridge, which can do 12 samples at once, costs an extra $500. That’s a roughly $42 per sample. The traditional DNA analysis method costs as little as $5 a sample.(该设备本身售价1000美元,包括两个初始测试盒。每一个后续的测序试剂盒,一次可以做12个样本,都要额外花费500美元。也就是每个样本大约42美元。传统的DNA分析方法每个样本只需花费5美元)”可知, MinION的缺点是价格高。故选A项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Hollie Booth, a sharks and rays advisor, says the MinION could have lots of practical uses, including controlling wildlife trade across countries or illegal fishing in markets. And the possibilities of this device aren’t just limited to sharks. It could be used to recognize elephant ivory, pangolin scales (穿山甲鳞片) and various other wildlife.(鲨鱼和鳐鱼的顾问Hollie Booth说,MinION可能有很多实际用途,包括控制跨国的野生动物贸易或市场上的非法捕鱼。而且这种设备的可能性并不仅仅局限于鲨鱼。它可以用来识别象牙、穿山甲鳞片和其他各种野生动物)”可推知,Hollie Booth 认为MinION将拯救很多种类的动物。故选A项。

Tricks To Becoming A Patient Person
Here’s a riddle: What do traffic jams, long lines and waiting for a vacation to start all have in common? There is one answer. ___16___.
In the Digital Age, we’re used to having what we need immediately and right at our fingertips. However, research suggests that if we practiced patience, we’d be a whole lot better off. Here are several tricks.
●Practice gratitude (感激)
Thankfulness has a lot of benefits: Research shows it makes us happier, less stressed and even more optimistic. ___17___. “Showing thankfulness can foster self-control,” said Ye Li, researcher at the University of California.
● Make yourself wait
Instant gratification (满足) may seem like the most “feel good” option at the time, but psychology research suggests waiting for things actually makes us happier in the long run. And the only way for us to get into the habit of waiting is to practice. ___18___. Put off watching your favorite show until the weekend or wait 10 extra minutes before going for that cake. You’ll soon find that the more patience you practice, the more you start to apply it to other, more annoying situations.
● ___19___.
So many of us have the belief that being comfortable is the only state we will tolerate, and when we experience something outside of our comfort zone, we get impatient about the circumstances. You should learn to say to yourself, “___20___.” You’ll then gradually become more patient.
A Find your causes
B. Start with small tasks
C. Accept the uncomfortable
D. All this adds up to a state of hurry
E. It can also help us practice more patience
F. This is merely uncomfortable, not intolerable
G. They’re all situations where we could use a little extra patience
【答案】16. G 17. E 18. B 19. C 20. F
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了变得耐心的一些方法。
【16题详解】
根据上文“Here’s a riddle: What do traffic jams, long lines and waiting for a vacation to start all have in common? There’s one answer. (这里有一个谜语:交通堵塞、排长队和等待假期开始有什么共同之处?答案只有一个)”可知,本句说明上文谜语的答案,结合“交通堵塞、排长队和等待假期”这些情况可知都需要耐心。故G选项“在这些情况下,我们都需要一点额外的耐心”符合语境,故选G。
【17题详解】
根据上文“Thankfulness has a lot of benefits: Research shows it makes us happier, less stressed and even more optimistic.(感恩有很多好处:研究表明,感恩让我们更快乐,压力更小,甚至更乐观)”以及后文““Showing thankfulness can foster self-control,” said Ye Li, researcher at the University of California. (加州大学的研究员叶丽说:“表达感激可以培养自我控制能力。”)”可知,上文提到了感恩的诸多好处,可知本句继续说明感恩的好处:它还可以帮助我们练习更多的耐心。E选项中It指代上文Thankfulness。故E选项“它还可以帮助我们练习更多的耐心”符合语境,故选E。
【18题详解】
根据上文“And the only way for us to get into the habit of waiting is to practice. (我们养成等待习惯的唯一方法就是练习)”以及后文“Put off watching your favorite show until the weekend or wait 10 extra minutes before going for that cake. (把你最喜欢的节目推迟到周末再看,或者多等10分钟再去吃蛋糕)”可知,后文列举的事情都是日常的小事,说明要从小事开始练习等待,故B选项“从小任务开始”符合语境,故选B。
【19题详解】
根据本段内容“So many of us have the belief that being comfortable is the only state we will tolerate, and when we experience something outside of our comfort zone, we get impatient about the circumstances. (我们中的许多人都认为舒适是我们唯一能容忍的状态,当我们经历舒适区之外的事情时,我们会对环境失去耐心)”可知,本段提到了舒适是我们唯一能容忍的状态,结合前文的小标题都是祈使句可知,本段的主旨与接受不舒适相关,C选项中uncomfortable对应后文comfortable。故C选项“接受不舒服”符合语境,故选C。
【20题详解】
根据上文“You should learn to say to yourself (你应该学会对自己说……)”以及后文“You’ll then gradually become more patient. (然后你会逐渐变得更有耐心)”结合本段主要说明的是不舒服的状态,可知,本句为对自己所说的话与接受不舒服相关,故F选项“这仅仅是不舒服,而不是无法忍受”符合语境,故选F。

I’m honored to give the speech. With the development of society and economy, the number of private cars is increasing at a surprising speed. As we all know, cars give off carbon dioxide, causing global warming, frequent natural disasters, diseases and so on. In order to protect our environment, it is high time that we should go green.

47. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When Dr. Henderson was assigning (指定) project mates for his psychology class, I secretly hoped he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with. Above all, I hoped he wouldn’t assign me to work with the fiercely competitive and extremely serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match. As fate (命运) would have it, Dr. Henderson very deliberately matched everyone in class and announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.
I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself. He looked at me as though I weren’t there. I felt he treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A in the course. He wasn’t mean or abusive. He just gave me the impression that he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.
Needless to say, I didn’t look forward to an entire team of being brushed off, but I tried to make the best of it and didn’t say anything for fear that I would make things worse.
The project required each team to develop a hypothesis (假说), set up an experiment to test the hypothesis, do the statistical analysis and present the findings. Whatever grade the team received would be shared by both students.
When my teammate and I met to discuss our project, I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student who had a reputation for single-mindedness and good grades—the exact opposite of me. I actually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening out. I decided to stick to it no matter what.
After long discussions, we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well-being of teenagers. I wasn’t sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic.
Para.1 We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans.

Para. 2 Then one day I got word that he was admitted to the hospital for a serious disease.

【答案】范文
Para.1
We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans. Companion as I was in the project, I still had no sense of participating in the project. My teammate kept his brain occupied in developing the hypothesis, setting up an experiment to test it, and running the tests alone, leaving me just standing beside him as if I were a fool. “What a dull project it is!” I murmured to myself. However, something changed gradually, as I became aware what the tactile-kinesthetic perception of space meant. Thanks to the intense, fiercely competitive, singularly serious fellow, the whole procedure went smoothly, close to the final stage.
Para. 2
Then one day I got word that he was admitted to the hospital for a serious disease. Without any delay, I packed up my school bag, took all the experiment statistics and rushed to the hospital. Seeing the pale fellow wearing pure white clothes instead of the annoying dark clothes, I felt a sense of sympathy and mercy welling up in my heart. With his guidance, I finished the statistical analysis and presented the findings. It turned out to be such an amazing and persuasive study that my teammate and I did win the best grade. Now, we have been most reliable cooperative partners ever since!

Amsterdam is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world famous for its beautiful canals, top art museums, cycling culture and so on.

Experts say that while Africa is not the cause of much climate change it is badly affected by it.

Hollie Booth a sharks and rays advisor, says the MinION could have lots of practical uses, including controlling wildlife trade across countries or illegal fishing in markets.
C How it was developed by a UK company.
