One day in September 2020, Liu Ailun met two little girls in Laos. They were sitting in a tuk-tuk, a common form of public transportation in Southeastern Asia.
Captivated by their cheerful smiles and bright eyes, the 31-year-old Chinese photographer asked their father, who was the driver, if he could take photos of them.
While chatting, Liu learned that the two sisters were of school-age, but their family couldn’t afford their school fees. Liu offered to provide financial support for their education and arranged to meet them the next morning, but the father didn’t show up.
Determined, Liu managed to locate the family by the end of the day, but they were initially hesitant to trust him. With a local friend vouching for Liu, the family eventually accepted his generosity. Just four days later, the sisters were enrolled in a primary school.
“I found comfort and inner happiness in helping the girls, so I didn’t want to stop,” Liu said.
In October 2020, Liu initiated a long-term public welfare project called Hope Vision under his own photography brand - “Hope” is also his daughter’s name. The project cooperates with a center for disabled children called Hands of Hope in Vientiane, the capital of Laos.
Each month, Liu gathers a group of volunteers to visit the hearing-impaired children at the center, providing both material support and emotional companionship. They bring items such as stationery, drinks, food, toys, and other necessities. They also spend half the day engaging with the children by playing games, attending classes, or “chatting” with them using sign language.
When the Songkran Water Festival approaches, they would buy a water gun for each child. “This idea came from my daughter and son, who enjoy playing with the kids there,” Liu said.
In fact, Liu and his two children have set up a family project called Pay it Forward. Occasionally, they help one person in need and suggest that this person also help someone else in whatever way they can, ensuring that the kindness continues and doesn’t stop with them.
4. Which is most likely the reason why “the father didn’t show up” in Paragraph 3?
A. His tuk-tuk broke down.
B. He didn’t believe in Liu Ailun.
C. He had no time to meet Liu Ailun.
D. He didn’t need Liu Ailun’s help at all.
5. What does the underlined word “initiated” in Paragraph 6 mean?
A. started. B. connected.
C. avoided. D. remembered.
6. Which of the following can best describe Liu Ailun?
A. Honest and daring.
B. Brave and generous.
C. Kind and caring.
D. Compassionate and tolerant.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Framing futures: one photographer’s journey of hope
B. Hope Vision: a project to help disabled children in Laos
C. Hope Project: the bond of friendship between China and Laos

If you’re a sports fan, you may be familiar with the emotional roller coaster that comes with sports spectatorship. Whether you’re part of a buzzing crowd in a stadium, or just watching at home on TV, it’s easy to get caught up in the highs and the lows when you celebrate or commiserate with your favourite team or athlete. Those feelings are so strong, in fact, that a study from Croatia, published in PubMed, showed that the emotional stress during a football match increased the risk of a cardiovascular incident. But can watching sports be good for you too?
The evidence suggests that people who watch live sporting events experience greater wellbeing than those who don’t. A study published in Frontiers in Public Health by the Anglia Ruskin University in the UK, found sports spectators felt less lonely and had higher scores for life satisfaction. Lead author Helen Keys said in a press release, “Watching live sport of all types provides many opportunities for social interaction and this helps to forge group identity and belonging.” She says this then reduces loneliness and boosts wellbeing.
But, if for any reason you aren’t keen on going to live events, don’t worry! Watching sports on TV or on the Internet may also have positive effects, according to a 2021 study by Tsuji and colleagues. They found that older adults who watched sports were less likely to have depressive symptoms than those who didn’t. On top of that, the sports spectators tended to have richer social networks than non-spectators. The authors suggest that the social networks you gain through watching sports may lower the risk of depressive symptoms.
So, the cheers at a live sports event or even casual chit-chat with friends about your favourite team can bring a sense of camaraderie and may reduce loneliness and depression. It seems the health benefits of sports are not limited to physical activity through participation in them, but that we can make gains in our general wellbeing through social bonding.
8. What can we infer from the paragraph 1?
A. Watching sports may cause harm to your health.
B. Sports fans can get lots of benefits from watching sports.
C. Sports fans love the feeling brought by emotional roller coaster.
D. Watching sports in a stadium makes you get caught up in the highs and lows more easily.
9. What does the paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The loneliness caused by not watching sports.
B. The benefits of watching live sporting events.
C. The life satisfaction brought by watching sports.
D. The opportunities provided by social interaction.
10. Which of the following is not a benefit of watching sports?
A. Higher life satisfaction.
B. Richer social networks.
C. Higher risk of depressive symptoms.
D. More opportunities for social interaction.
11. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. We should strengthen the role of social bonds.
B. Participating in sports is just physical exercise.
C. We must cheer loudly when watching live sports events.
D. Compared to social bonds, participating in sports is not vital.
D
“I’m knackered-have you got any tips for a good night’s sleep?” Not only is sleep a common feature of our small talk, we’ve also spent decades trying to understand and explain it. After all, we spend on average 26 years of our lives asleep. So, what do we know? Here are the highlights of the last decade of research.
One of the most intriguing developments is in the study of lucid (清醒的) dreaming-it seems it’s possible to communicate with people while they’re sleeping. In a study called “Real-time dialogue between experimenters and dreamers during REM sleep”, researchers asked questions to participants in a lucid dream. The dreamers signalled the answers using pre-agreed eye or facial movements. They were accurate, suggesting they could access their cognitive functions such as working memory while sleeping. This interaction between dream world and reality has brought excitement to the sleep science community.
Sleep can also help our memory and problem-solving. A 2023 review of research by Denis and Cairney noted that brain regions that are used to learn new things, are reactivated during sleep. That means while we’re sleeping, our brains replay our memories of what happened during the day, which is believed to be crucial for memory retention. And, if you’ve ever felt it was best to sleep on a tricky problem and solve it in the morning, you might have scientific backing! A 2019 study by Sanders and colleagues found that people were more likely to solve a tricky problem the next day if the problem had been activated in their brains during sleep. So, if you’re stuck, rest up and return to it in the morning.
What if you’re unlucky enough to suffer with sleep deprivation? Unfortunately, you may beat higher risk of negative moods and worse emotional regulation, according to a 2021 meta-analysis called “The effect of sleep deprivation and restriction on mood, emotion, and emotion regulation”. The good news is there are plenty of tips to help you with your sleep hygiene. The UK’s National Health Service recommends having a set time to start winding down, meditation before bed, which they call “beditation” (睡眠冥想), and avoiding caffeine before bed.
12. Which of the following does the author agree with?
A. We spend over 26 years of our lives asleep.
B. People have been studying sleep for many years.
C. Sleep is only a common feature of our small talk.
D. We can’t communicate with people who are sleeping.
13. What do we know about lucid dreaming?
A. Participants can answer questions aloud in lucid dreams.
B. People can access their cognitive functions while sleeping.
C. We can communicate with others easily while they’re sleeping.
D. The dreamers merely use eyes or expressions to indicate answers.
14. What can we learn from the paragraph 3?
A. Sleeping on a problem can help us to solve it.
B. People are sure to solve tricky problems after a good sleep.
C. Brain regions to forget new things are reactivated during sleep.
D. Solving a tricky problem in the morning has had scientific backing.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. The study of lucid dreaming.
B. The tips for a good night’s sleep.
C. The effects of beditation on sleep.
D. The conclusions of research on sleep.

One of the cores of emotional intelligence is self-regulation, an important skill in the workplace. ____16____. Here are four ways you can develop greater emotional self-management.
Pause to Mentally Distance
When you notice your typical physiological experiences associated with strong negative emotion, what should you do? ____17____. Asking yourself any question, or imagining what you might look like to others right now, will do the trick. At that point, although still physiologically keyed up, you will be able to ask yourself, “What is the best course of action right now?” or “What advice would I give someone else who is in my shoes?” Stay focused on coming up with an answer and following through on it.
Take Control of Your Self-Talk
We’re frequently unaware of how much self-chatter is going on in the background of our minds. Such self-talk might not be in fully articulated (铰接式的) words or phrases, but instead little flashes of thought. ____18____. Why is this an important skill to develop? Because it is those background beliefs that fuel our emotional responses. To genuinely ease a strong negative emotion requires tackling the source by examining the underlying belief and how accurate, reasonable, or useful it is.
Seek Support from Partners
Ask others you trust to help you recognize when your emotions seem to be getting the best of you. Explain your developmental goals and sincerely ask for help. Agree on a gesture or word that might serve as a signal that your trusted individual wonders whether you’re riding the led-by-your-limbic-system train. Of course, there will be times they’re wrong. ____19____. Reacting with anything other than gratitude ensures that your partner won’t take that risk again.
____20____
Our brains are wired to draw conclusions and form judgments at lightning speed, and those are frequently the cause of our negative emotions. Those judgments are not necessarily accurate, but we tend to run with them, sparking the self-talk that follows. Generally working to be more curious about other people’s experiences, including their self-identified motives for their behavior, helps avoid making hasty judgments.
A. Cultivate Curiosity
B. Make the right judgments
C. Mentally step out of your immediate experience
D. Becoming aware of your self-talk can be difficult
E. Doing so provides you with choices as to how to act
F. So, it’s important not to respond defensively when you get that signal
G. Like any skill, mastery of emotional self-control requires intentionality and practice

I swung my car into the parking lot before a large store, feeling stressed I had to be in and out quickly. “Don’t look at anything,” I told myself. “Just get the things you need and leave or you won’t be home on time.”
While walking towards the store, I noticed a woman sitting weakly on the cold ground outside the glass door. Shoppers rushed by, trying not to look in her direction. I hurried into the store, and as I traveled up and down the aisles (通道), the picture of the woman stayed in my mind. While picking up my items, I thought how lucky I was to grab anything I needed. I couldn’t help wondering what she needed.
But I wasn’t an outgoing person; I rarely spoke to strangers, and I certainly could not approach a woman like this. She looked strange and different from me. Helping her could be complicated. I just couldn’t do it. Besides, I didn’t have time. And she probably just wanted money to buy alcohol. I paid for my groceries and rushed out the door. But before reaching my car, something inside me said, “Go back.”
I put my purchases in the car. With my heart pounding, I gathered courage and walked back. Maybe I would just hand her some money and leave. That would be fast and easy, I wouldn’t have to say anything. But when drawing near, I met something unexpected. The woman was young, with a baby sleeping inside her clothes. An old stroller (婴儿手推车) wasn’t far away. I hadn’t noticed it earlier.
I caught my breath, saying, “What can I do for you?” “Meal,” she said in a strange accent. “A meal?” I asked. She nodded. “What would you like?” I asked. She looked at the baby and back at me. She spoke another language. After some rough communication, I learned she wanted milk powder for her baby.
“What kind?” I asked. She made a circle with her thumb and the nearby finger.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Oh for a newborn of one month?” I asked.

6. Which of the following can best describe Liu Ailun?

C The life satisfaction brought by watching sports.

【答案】16. G 17. C 18. D 19. F 20. A

Because it is those background beliefs that fuel our emotional responses.(为什么这是一项需要培养的重要技能呢?
根据上文“Agree on a gesture or word that might serve as a signal that your trusted individual wonders whether you’re riding the led-by-your-limbic-system train. Of course, there will be times they’re wrong.(就一个手势或词语达成一致,这可能是一个信号,表明你信任的人想知道你是否在接受边缘系统训练。当然,有时他们会犯错。)”可知,F项“So, it’s important not to respond defensively when you get that signal(所以,当你收到这个信号时,不要做出防御性反应,这一点很重要)”中的“that signal”呼应上文“a signal”,符合语境。故选F。

47. 读后续写

【答案】
“Oh. for a newborn of one month?” I asked. She smiled nodding. “I’ll be back soon,” I said. Thoughts rushed into me as I walked the store’s aisles. She only wanted milk powder. She simply wanted to feed her baby. She was a mother loving her child. While thinking, I picked up the largest size of baby milk powder. Then. I couldn’t resist picking up some soft pink socks, a stuffed rabbit, and a snack for the mother. After paying, I hurried outside. “Is this okay?” I held up the powder to her. She smiled.
“I also got these: socks, toys...” I told her and opened the shopping bag. While looking inside, she admired the things and said “Oh. thank you very much!” A wonderful warm feeling washed over me. I settled back into my car and found she carefully placed her baby and package into the stroller. Then she walked away and disappeared. While driving away, I felt a sense of peace. The stress of the day melted away. With a little courage, I knew I could do this again and gave a large blessing to someone else. It didn’t have to be complicated or expensive.
