Karen was 84 years old and depended on a wheelchair to get around because she was missing a leg. Her son, Johnny Lauder, tried repeatedly to get her to leave, but she refused. Johnny and his whole family live within a few blocks of one another. They kept in touch with Karen as the storm continued violently (猛烈地) outside, watching the water rising dangerously all around them. When Karen reported that the water in her house had reached her bottom, Johnny knew he had to take action. First, Johnny ensured his sons and their pets were taken care of. Then, he jumped out of a window and began to swim. Johnny used to work as a rescue swimmer. He is obviously a strong swimmer, but the flood water was filled with dangerous materials. There was also a strong current (水流), and he had to swim against it for most of his trip to Karen’s. As he made his way through the water, Johnny stopped periodically to snap selfies (自拍) to show his worried family that he was okay. Johnny was racing against the clock. He knew he only had a short period of time to get there before the water rose above Karen’s head. It took him 40 minutes to swim four blocks. The sound of Karen shouting inside was music to his ears! “If it would’ve been 20 minutes later, she wouldn’t be here,” Johnny said. “She’s never been happier to see me.” Karen is now safe, although she is in the hospital being treated for infections (感染) she got in the water. The family have all lost everything they owned, including their houses, but they’ re grateful just to be here. 1. Why did Karen refuse to leave her house when the hurricane came? A. She was too old to move. B. She missed one of her legs. C. She thought the storm was not violent. D. She lost her wheelchair and was unable to leave. 2. What challenge did Johnny face while swimming to his mother? A. Strong current. B. Sharks in the water. C. Cold temperature. D. Lack of swimming skills. 3. Why did Johnny take selfies along the way to Karen’s home? A. To record his swimming trip. B. To report his safety to his family. C. To warn other rescuers of danger. D. To show off his swimming skills. 4. What was the family’s attitude after losing everything? A. They were angry. B. They were depressed. C. They were bitter about the loss. D. They were thankful to be alive. B “Nearly 2.5 billion people worldwide will be living with some degree of hearing loss by 2050. At least 700 million of those people will require access to ear and hearing care and other rehabilitation (康复) services unless action is taken. Untreated hearing loss can have a destructive impact on people’s ability to communicate, to study. It can also impact on people’s mental health and their ability to maintain relationships,” said Dr Tedros, WHO Director-General. The report, launched ahead of World Hearing Day on 3 March, stressed the need to rapidly step up efforts to prevent and solve hearing loss by investing (投资) and expanding access to ear and hearing care services. Investment in ear and hearing care has been shown to be worth it. Lack of accurate information about ear diseases and hearing loss often keeps people from accessing care for these conditions. Even among health-care providers, there’s often a lack of knowledge about prevention, early identification and management of hearing loss and ear diseases, preventing their ability to provide the care required. In children, almost 60% of hearing loss can be prevented through measures, such as immunization (免疫接种) for prevention and early management. In adults, noise control and safe listening together with good ear health can help maintain good hearing and reduce the potential for hearing loss. Identification is the first step in dealing with hearing loss. Clinical screening at strategic points in life ensures that any loss of hearing and ear diseases can be identified as early as possible. Once checked, early prevention is the key. Medical and surgical treatment can cure most ear diseases, potentially reversing (逆转) the associated hearing loss. However, where hearing loss is irreversible, rebabilitation can ensure that those affected avoid the negative effects of bearing loss. 5. What can we learn from Dr Tedros’ words? A. Hearing loss only influences people’s physical health. B. Nearly 2.5 billion people are suffering from hearing loss. C. Untreated hearing loss can affect people’s daily life seriously. D. Nearly 700 million people can have access to hearing care now. 6. Why are health-care providers mentioned in paragraph 3? A. To stress the importance of doctors and nurses. B. To show the absence of awareness about prevention. C. To call on people to respect them. D. To introduce the topic of hearing loss. 7. What can be concluded from the last two paragraphs? A. Rehabilitation services can reverse hearing loss. B. Most hearing loss in children can be cured. C. It is important to prevent hearing loss and ear diseases early. D. Few ear diseases can be cured by medical and surgical treatment. C Last summer, two nineteenth-century cottages were rescued from remote farm fields in Montana, to be moved to an Art Deco building in San Francisco. The houses were made of wood. These cottages once’ housed early settlers as they worked the dry Montana soil; now they hold Twitter engineers. The cottages could be an example of the industry’s unusual love for “low technology”, a concept associated with the natural world, and with old-school craftsmanship (手艺) that exists long before the Internet era. Low technology is not virtual — so, to take advantage of it, Internet companies have had to get creative. The rescued wood cottages, fitted by band in the late eighteen-hundreds, are an obvious example. Other companies are using a broader interpretation (阐释) of low technology that focuses on nature. Amazon is building three glass spheres filled with trees, so that employees can “work and socialize in a more natural, park-like setting.” At Google’s office, an entire is carpeted in glass. Facebook’s second Menlo Park campus will have a rooftop park with a walking path. Olle Lundberg, the founder of Lundberg Design, has worked with many tech companies over the years. “Our tech engineers are the ones who feel impoverished, because they’re surrounded by the digital world,” he says. “We’ve found that introducing real crafts is one way to regain their individual identity.” This craft-based theory is rooted in history. William Morris, the English artist and writer, turned back to pre-industrial arts in the eighteen-sixties, just after Industrial Revolution. The Arts and Crafts movement defined itself against machines. “Without creative human occupation, people became disconnected from life.” Morris said. Research has shown that natural environments can restore our mental abilities. In Japan, patients are encouraged to “forest-bathe”, taking walks through woods to lower their blood pressure. These health benefits apply to the workplace as well. Rachel Kaplvin, a professor of environmental psychology, has spent years researching the restorative effects of natural environment. Her research found that workers with access to nature at the office-even simple views of trees and flowers-felt their jobs were less stressful and more satisfying. If low-tech offices can potentially benefit the brains and improve the mental health of employees then, fine, bring on the cottages. 8. Why does the writer mentions the two nineteenth-century cottages? A. To show Twitter is having a hard time. B. To show old cottages are in need of protection. C. To show us early settlers once suffered from a dry climate in Montana. D. To show Internet companies have rediscovered the benefits of low technology. 9. Low technology is regarded as something that ______ A. is related to nature B. is out of date today C. uses too much energy D. exists in the virtual world 10. What is the writer’s attitude to “low technology”? A critical B. positive C. worried D. doubtful 11. What can be the best title for the passage? A. Past Glories, Future Dreams B. The Virtual World, the Real Challenge C. High-tech Companies, Low-tech Offices D. The More Craftsmanship, the Less Creativity 第二节 七选五(共5题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 As you get older, you’ll meet a wider range of people from diverse cultures. ____12____.
