Once upon a time, there was a farmer. He had two sons. When they were old enough to get married, he told them, “Each of you must cut down a tree. Walk in the direction it points, and you will meet your future wife. ”
The elder brother knew whom he wanted to marry, so he made sure his tree fell in the direction of her house. Mikko, the younger brother, did not have this skill. His tree pointed to the forest. Mikko walked through the forest and didn’t stop until he saw a house. He went inside, but the house was empty. “I’ll never find my wife, ” he said.

Andersen was born in Denmark in 1805. When he was still a young boy, he was already very clever and imaginative(富有想象力的). He created a small toy theater and made clothes for his puppets(木偶). He also liked reading.
In 1816, his father died and he learned to be a tailor(裁缝). Later he worked in a factory. At the age of fourteen, Andersen moved to the capital of Denmark to become an actor and gave performances in the Royal Danish Theater. However, his voice changed when he grew older, so the job had to stop. Then he began to write poems and fairytales.
