If you always sit indoors for too long, putting on weight may become a trouble. Tired of all that fat? If so, these sports can help you burn the most calories.
Running
“Running is one of the best calorie burners out there,” qualified personal trainer Daniel Saltos says. An average person can burn anywhere from 500 to 1000 calories in one hour of running. “Speed, pace, and tolerance are all factors that can impact this range. But running uses every muscle group in the body, allowing you to burn more calories.”
Swimming
“Swimming is a workout that produces the lowest impact on body while it still can burn 500 to 600 calories in just 30 minutes,” Saltos says. Swimming also improves heart health and increases strength—all great reasons for playing in the water.
Boxing
Not only is boxing a great way to release energy, but it also helps improve balance, builds up tolerance and strengthens the upper body and core. “Boxing helps you get a good calorie burn, too, with the average person burning up 400 to 800 calories in an hour session,” Saltos says.
Rowing
The pushing and pulling motion of rowing machines targets multiple muscle groups including the arms, core, and back, helping you to burn more calories. “An hour of rowing will burn 400 to 600 calories on average,” Saltos says.

Pat Smith, a 70-year-old grandmother, has become a famous environmental activist. She spent one year cleaning up litter from 52 beaches on the UK’s south coast.
Smith set out on her task in January to carry out her New Year’s resolution (决心) of making her community a better and cleaner place. The great goal came to her after watching a documentary on plastic pollution the previous year, and she knew she couldn’t just do nothing.
Over the year, Smith cleaned beaches from Coverack on the Lizard Peninsula to Blackpool Sands in Devon. Often, volunteers would join her in her efforts. During her beach cleans, Smith was sometimes mistaken for doing community service that have been ordered by court as a punishment. She said:“People don’t understand I’ve been doing this voluntarily. We should all take responsibility for picking up the litter as well as ensuring we don’t drop litter in the first place.”
She manages to make her hometown an example for the plastic-free movement in the United Kingdom. In order to help achieve this goal, she founded The Final Straw (吸管). “I founded the Final Straw to try and raise awareness of the very harmful damage we are doing to our oceans from our using single-use plastics. I feel I have a responsibility to my children and grandchildren to do something about it,” she said.
Her resolution year may be over but this grandma continues her pursuit (追求). “A lot of the rubbish I have picked up is everyday items,” said Pat. “These things are used by all of us and it is shocking to find them polluting our beautiful beaches. Please let’s try to be morel thoughtful in this coming year. I’m driven to try and protect our living planet for my children and grandchildren and I will continue to do everything in my power to achieve that.” It’s particularly heartwarming to see more and more people taking part in it and learning about how plastic affects our world, as this gives us all a lot of hope for the future.

A Community service.
B. A film or television program.

Joy Harjo’s Poet Warrior is a wonderful book that mixes memoir (回忆录), poetry, songs, and dreams into something that opens a window into the most important events of Harjo’s life and invites readers to reconnect with themselves.
Poet Warrior is a spiritual companion to Crazy Brave, Harjo’s first memoir, but it operates alone and reading the first memoir isn’t a requirement in order to enjoy Poet Warrior. Rather than a memoir following a strict time order and detailing all major events, this book focuses on the role of poetry, art, and music in Harjo’s life and her development as an artist. This is also a book about pain and growth. Harjo talks about the significance of our ancestors’ stories and lessons, discusses the music that shaped her childhood in a broken home, and shares her understanding —and conversations—with other artists, her family, snakes, birds and plants. But the simplicity with which Harjo writes about deep things makes this a beautiful book.
Poet Warrior is also a guide to life for those willing to listen. She writes, “We are all here to serve each other. At some point we have to understand that we do not need to carry a story that is unbearable. We can observe the story, feel the story, let the story go and forgive the story. Then we can use the materials of it to build a house of wisdom.”
Joy Harjo is more than a poet, painter and musician; she is a spiritual being aware of the meaning of everything we can see as well as the things around us that are usually invisible. And Poet Warrior is an invitation to open our eyes and see it all with hers.
8. Which of the following best describes Poet Warrior?
A. It is too difficult to be enjoyed by readers.
B. It has to be read together with Crazy Brave.
C. It describes Harjo’s life in a strict time order.
D. It is closely related to Harjo’s first memoir.
9. What does Harjo suggest we do with our painful past?
A. Learn from it. B. Ignore it.
C. Cover it up. D. Bear it silently.
10. What does the word “invisible” underlined in the last paragraph mean?
A. Ordinary. B. Rare. C. Hidden. D. Important.
11. From which is the text probably taken?
A. A biography. B. A book review. C. A short story. D. A writing guide.
D
Reading can be a social activity. Think of the people who belong to book groups. They choose books to read and then meet to discuss them. Now, the website Book Crossing.com turns the page on the traditional idea of a book group.
Members go on the site and register (登记) the books they own and would like to share. Book Crossing provides an identification number (识别码) to stick inside the book. Then the person leaves it in a public place, hoping that the book will have an adventure, traveling far and wide with each new reader who finds it.
Bruce Pederson, the managing director of Book Crossing, says, “The two things that change your life are the people you meet and books you read. Book Crossing combines both.”
Members leave books on park benches and buses, in train stations and coffee shops. Whoever finds their book will go to the site and record where they found it.
People who find a book can also leave a journal entry describing what they thought of it. E— mails are then sent to the BookCrossers to keep them updated about where their books have been found. Bruce Pederson says the idea is for people not to be selfish by keeping a book to gather dust on a shelf at home.
Book Crossing is part of a trend (趋势) among people who want to get back to the “real” and not the virtual (虚拟).The site now has more than one million members in more than one hundred thirty—five countries.
12. Why does the author mention book groups in the first paragraph?
A. To explain what they are. B. To introduce Book Crossing.
C. To stress the importance of reading. D. To encourage readers to share their ideas.
13. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. An adventure. B. A public place.
C. The book. D. The identification number.
14. What will a Book Crosser do with a book after reading it?
A. Keep it safe in his bookcase. B. Mail it back to its owner.
C. Meet other readers to discuss it. D. Pass it on to another reader.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Online Reading: A Virtual Tour B. Electronic Books: A New Trend
C. A Book Group Brings Tradition Back D. A Website Links People through Books

We live in a switched-on world in which it’s almost unthinkable to be without social media for so much as a day. All is designed to keep us addicted. ___16___ An increasing number of studies indicate that social media can have a negative impact on our relationships IRL (that’s “in real life” for non-techies). The good news is that you don’t have to go backwards to avoid the dangers of social media. ____17____

I chewed on my pencil as I walked back and forth across my bedroom What was I going to do? It was bad enough that I was the new kid. But now I was sure to get laughed right out of fifth grade. How could my first homework be such a disaster?
“My name is Anna, and this summer I——”I stopped. How could I stand in front of my class and say that I’d spent the entire summer handling something that most people don’t even like to talk about? Poop (粪便). I’d spent three months shoveling (铲), collecting, and analyzing co w poop on my grandparents’ farm. I tried to think of a different adventure I could share. Maybe I could say I’d spent the summer on the Weather Control Team preventing floods.
“Time for dinner,” my mom called.
I walked slowly down the stairs and slid into my chair.
“You’ve been in your room since you came home from school,” Mom said. “What are you working on?”
I sighed. “I have to tell the class what I did this summer.”
My younger brother, Seymour, began to laugh uncontrollably. “No one will want to sit next to you after they hear you were covered in cow poop all summer!”
“OK, that’s enough, Seymour,” Dad said.
“Anna” said Mom, putting green beans in a bowl, “be proud of the work we did this summer. Our planet would be in sad shape without scientists like your grandfather.”
It’s true that my grandfather does important work. He developed an easy way to use poop as a source of fuel. Using the poop is now easy, economical, and environmentally safe.
“I know, Mom,” I said, staring at my meatloaf. “But it’s not exactly something people want to hear about before lunch.”
That night I dreamed about more splendid adventures: cave diving in Mexico; hiking through the Amazon rainforest.
At school the next day, I bent over my desk, listening to each kid speak. My palms were sweaty, and the knot (结) in my stomach grew tighter.
“And that was my journey to Mount Everest,” Ember Adams said, finishing her report. She bowed and took her seat.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
“It’s your turn, Anna,” Ms. Hammond said.

A A biography. B. A book review. C. A short story. D. A writing guide.

Members leave books on park benches and buses in train stations and coffee shops.

【答案】Dear Anna,
I am so glad to learn that you are going to enter a Chinese character writing competition. But you seem to be a little worried about it and I have some advice for you.
As is known to all, a positive attitude to the competition contributes greatly to excellent performance. Therefore, keep calm and confident before and during the process. Secondly, when writing Chinese characters, employ the correct gesture of holding the pen, which to some extent, determines the structures of your characters. Thirdly, everybody has his or her own style of writing. It is this personal feature that says a lot about you, thus probably enabling you to stand out among the competitors.
Hopefully the suggestions above will do you some good. And I do believe that, through your constant efforts, you will achieve success eventually. Best wishes for you!
Yours,
Li Hua

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I chewed on my pencil as I walked back and forth across my bedroom. What was I going to do?
“Anna,” said Mom, putting green beans in a bowl, “be proud of the work we did this summer.
注意:

【答案】
“It’s your turn, Anna,” Ms. Hammond said. Taking a deep breath, I stepped to the front of the room and cleared my throat. “This summer I-well, I...” I stared at the floor. This was my last chance to save my dignity with a tale of fake adventure. Then I thought about how hard Grandpa worked to save our planet. Gathering my courage, I described the process of collecting and analyzing cow poop and how it was transformed into sustainable fuel. Surprisingly, my classmates listened attentively. As I concluded my sustainable adventure, I gracefully bowed to them.
The class cheered as I returned to my desk, and some of my classmates approached me with admiration in their eyes. Ember Adams, who had just shared her journey to Mount Everest, clapped me on the back. “That’s so cool, Anna! Turning poop into fuel? That never crossed my mind!” she exclaimed. Soon, others joined the conversation, intrigued by the unusual nature of my summer experience. A sense of relief, joy and pride overwhelmed me. Instead of being the target of laughter, I became the center of attention. My seemingly “stinky” summer vacation was actually not only a fabulous planet-saving adventure but also opened a door to my friendships with my new fifth-grade peers!
