Project-based learning that freely crosses disciplines provides an education superior to the traditional “maths at age nine, history at ten, literature at eleven” structure. Examples of projects applicable to the here and now are as follows: Soil Superheroes Project King Middle School, Maine African Wildlife DNA Project High Tech High California Seventh graders learn about soil bacteria (细菌) by creating multimedia information brochures. They consult professional microbiologists and cartoonists, conduct research, and then distribute their works to local garden centers and flower shops. An eleventh grade biology class uses DNA to help protect African wildlife. The students share their findings with wildlife-protection officials and have traveled to Tanzania to lead bushmeat-identification workshops. Water Wheel Project Ferry way School, Massachusetts Bridge Project Kentucky Elementary School, Ohio Fifth-graders explore history, science, technology, and engineering by designing their own water wheels. By the time they visit the nearby Saugus Iron Works, which dates back to the 1640s, they’ve already tested and mastered the centuries-old technology. Students conduct surveys, do research, build models and take field trips with the goal of determining the best kind of new bridge to build over the Ohio River. Students don’t restrict themselves to one discipline but rather look into maths, literature, history, science — whatever is appropriate to the study. 1. What is the characteristic of project-based learning? A. Following strict disciplines. B. Engaging in real-world issues. C. Starting subjects at different ages. D. Adopting teacher-centered class modes. 2. Which project includes a field trip to a historic site? A. Soil Superheroes Project. B. African Wildlife DNA Project. C. Water Wheel Project. D. Bridge Project. 3. What is highlighted in Bridge Project? A. Convenience. B. Integration. C. Efficiency. D. Popularity. B Last summer, 17-year-old Li Mei from Chengdu stepped off the plane in Paris, carrying her beloved erhu - a traditional Chinese two-stringed instrument that was passed down from her grandmother. As part of a youth cultural exchange program, she had dreamed of this moment for years, yet the weight of representing her heritage in a foreign land left her palms sweaty. Little did she know that this trip would spark an extraordinary musical creation. During a workshop at a local art school, Li met Pierre, a French violinist who was fascinated by her instrument’s attractive sound. “It’s like the voice of ancient China,” he remarked with excitement, gently plucking (拨) the erhu’s strings. Inspired by each other’s music, they decided to mix the soulful melodies of the erhu with the dynamic range of the violin for a performance at the upcoming Bastille Day celebration. As they practiced in a sunlit studio overlooking the Seine, Li taught Pierre how to imitate raindrops with quick bow movements on the erhu, while Pierre showed her how to weave Western harmonies into the Chinese folk tune “Jasmine Flower.” The integration created a charming soundscape that neither had imagined possible. On the performance night, their piece “Silk Road Echoes” received thunderous applause. The audience were amazed at how the erhu’s sad tones danced with the violin’s vigorous melodies (旋律). What began as a summer experiment blossomed into lasting friendship and something far greater. Today, Li and Pierre co-teach virtual music classes, connecting students in Chengdu and Lyon through weekly “global jam sessions.” Their students cooperate on pieces that mix erhu with guitar or Peking opera with jazz. Li often tells her pupils, “Music has no borders; it’s a language that turns differences into harmonies.” When traditions meet with open hearts, they don’t conflict, they compose something entirely new. 4. Why did Li Mei bring her erhu to Paris? A. To share Chinese music culture. B. To give it to her friend as a present. C. To display it at a local studio. D. To teach students full-time. 5. What contributed to the lasting cooperation of Li Mei and Pierre? A. Their common and deep love for traditional Chinese music. B. Their successful performance and inspiration from each other’s music. C. The opportunity to participate in the Bastille Day celebration together. D The desire to teach music in a virtual way to students around the world. 6. Why was “Silk Road Echoes” well received by the audience? A. It reflected the beauty of nature wonderfully. B. It featured traditional Chinese folk performance. C. It was a musical handshake between civilizations. D. It was an excellent musical instrument exhibition. 7. What does the story mainly convey? A. Music is the source of lasting friendship. B. Mastering an instrument requires practice. C. Traditional music resists modern influences. D. Cooperation across cultures generates innovation. C Artificial intelligence (AI) tools designed to operate at human levels have greatly expanded in popularity over the past year. These include OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s AI-powered search engine Bing. Such tools, also known as chatbots or generative AI, are computer-powered systems. They are designed to interact smoothly with humans and perform high-level writing and creative work. In recent months, these tools have demonstrated an ability to produce high-quality work. This has led some technology experts to warn that generative AI systems could end up replacing workers in many industries. This year, researchers at Harvard Business School and other organizations carried out an experiment. It aimed to test how well AI tools could help workers perform their usual duties or tasks. It involved more than 700 business advisors, called consultants, from Massachusetts-based Boston Consulting Group. Harvard Business School recently published the results from the experiment in a working paper. The main findings suggest that AI tools like ChatGPT can greatly improve worker performance. For example, researchers found that, on average, workers who used OpenAI’s latest ChatGPT 4 tool completed 12 percent more tasks than non-ChatGPT users. Tasks carried out with help from the AI technology were completed 25 percent faster. And the team found the quality of work performed by consultants using ChatGPT 4 increased by about 40 percent. However, the paper also noted areas where the performance of consultants using ChatGPT 4 dropped. The researchers said this was especially true with tasks the AI tool was not good at completing. “Of tasks the AI was good at, the experiment showed it significantly improved human performance,” the paper said. “But for tasks ChatGPT 4 was not right for, humans relied too much on the AI and were more likely to make mistakes.” The team suggests one of the biggest barriers to companies effectively using AI is not knowing which tasks can be completed best with the technology. Finding this out will require businesses to carry out thoughtful research and training efforts in order to find the right mix of AI and human-level work. 8. What is a purpose of designing AI tools according to the text? A. To perform low-level writing. B. To replace technology experts. C. To finish high-quality work. D. To improve interpersonal communication. 9. Why does the author mention ChatGPT 4 in paragraph 4? A To explain the disadvantages of AI tools. B. To show how well AI tools could help workers. C. To forecast changes in the future working environment. D. To compare the work performance between humans and AI tools. 10. What can be learned from the last paragraph? A. Companies need to balance the work of AI and humans. B. It is useless to train so many workers to learn to use AI. C. It is easy to find the right mix of AI and human-level work. D. Research on using AI effectively has been made by businesses. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. ChatGPT Can See, Hear and Speak Now B. Ways to Improve Your Performance at Work C. The Fast Development of Artificial Intelligence D. AI Tools Help but also Harm Worker Performance D On a hot summer afternoon, a child eagerly watched as their grandmother sliced a sun-ripened tomato topped with sugar—a refreshing summer treat. The sandy, sweet-sour juice with melted sugar always made one lick plates clean. Decades later, that same child, now an adult, finds disappointedly supermarket tomatoes firm to the touch, pale in colour, and totally lacking in the rich flavor. Beyond a mere loss in our childhood memory, the shift is a measurable decline rooted in the farming changes and modern needs. The decline in modern tomato flavor results from disturbed sugar-acid balance. Traditional varieties had higher sugar levels balanced with moderate acidity. A recent study by Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences (SAAS) shows alarming trends: pink tomatoes lost over 26%sugar-acid ratio, while red types dropped 22%, coupled with rising organic acids. This imbalance creates sour-dominated flavors with weakened sweetness. The situation is made worse by the loss of special taste components. These elements work together to create a rich flavor. They can make our brain sense more sweetness even when the sugar level stays the same. However, in modern farming, people have accidentally removed the genes (基因) for these taste components while focusing on higher output and disease resistance. Commercial pressures also play a role. For easier shipping, tomatoes are harvested before they are mature and subjected to cold storage. These practices unintentionally affect how flavor-giving chemicals are released, leaving tomatoes structurally undamaged but flavorless. Hope however, lies in the gene pool of traditional and wild tomato varieties. A 2019 comprehensive study on genes, analyzing over 700 tomato types, identified 4,873 previously undocumented genes, including rare genetic variations that improve flavors. By reintroducing these “lost” genetic elements through scientific methods, scientists aim to balance marketability and taste quality. The challenge remains complex, yet the solution is clear: to rediscover the flavors in our childhood memory, we must first understand the genetic codes (密码) left behind in the drive for progress. 12. Why does the author mention the tomato experience in paragraph 1? A. To explain the health benefits of fresh tomatoes. B. To show the change in tomato flavor over time. C. To highlight the significance of a family tradition. D. To illustrate the disappearance of a summer delight. 13. What does SAAS’s recent study find? A. Higher sugar levels in modern tomatoes. B. More organic acids in traditional tomatoes. C. The loss of sweet-sour balance in tomatoes. D. Taste difference between pink and red tomatoes. 14. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The advantages of gene selections. B. The roles commercial practices play. C. The challenges tomato farming faces. D. The reasons behind less-flavored tomatoes. 15. Which is a potential solution to the core problem discussed in the text? A. Discovering highly productive genes. B. Analyzing different types of tomatoes. C. Introducing disease-resistant elements. D. Using rare genes in wild tomato varieties. In every culture throughout time, the kitchen has had a powerful influence. Thanksgiving meant four days off. Driving from Ohio to Minnesot a took one day, so she could spend two whole days with Emily. Ashley hadn’t seen Emily for five months — not since Ashley had moved to Ohio. It felt like forever. Over the phone, Emily talked a lot about a girl named Isabella. Was Isabella Emily’s new best friend? No, Ashley decided. She couldn’t be. Only Ashley knew how to make Emily’s favorite dessert — strawberry-apple pie. Ashley couldn’t wait to get back to Minnesota. She ran into the living room. “Can I start packing the car? We said we’d leave by 4:00.” Mom glanced up from her computer. “There’s a good chance of snow.” “The forecast must be wrong. I promised Emily I’d come,” Ashley said. Mom pushed her chair back and sighed, “We’ll hope for good weather but we’ll stop if it snows.” “I’ll keep my fingers crossed,” Ashley said, “Nothing will go wrong.” But everything did go wrong. Snow began to fall. Little flakes at first, then big clumps. The freeway had no place to stop. The windshield wipers (雨刷器) could hardly keep up. Mom pulled into a rest area. “We’ll stay here until the roads are clear.” “It’s Thanksgiving. I brought Emily’s favorite pie. She’s counting on me.” Ashley felt her tears welling up in the eyes. Mom squeezed (攥紧) Ashley’s hand. “I’m sorry, sweetie. We can eat pie tomorrow.” “Where will we stay?” Mum replied, “The rest stop has a hall. We can sleep on the floor. Grab your blanket and pillow. It’ll be fun, like camping.” Ashley hurried out of the car and followed close behind Mom. They stumbled into the hall.Ashley stamped her feet, and snow slipped onto the floor. In the middle of the hall, a man sat between two little boys on a blanket. A girl sat with her parents on another blanket next to them. “Hello,” said Mom. “Hi,” said the girl. “Welcome. Come to share our Thanksgiving dinner,” said the father of the two young boys. He pulled sandwiches out of a cooler and set them on the blanket. Para. 1:“Beef soup and stuffed dumplings,” the girl pointed to their food on the blanket, inviting them to join. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Para. 2: On hearing her new friend’s wish, Ashley thought about Emily’s strawberry-apple pie in the car. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 培英高级中学2024-2025学年度第二学期期中考试 高二英语 本试卷共8页,满分120分。 A In a growing number of schools, educators believe that having students take part by starting with practical problems is a great motivator. Project-based learning that freely crosses disciplines provides an education superior to the traditional “maths at age nine, history at ten, literature at eleven” structure. 根据Water Wheel Project部分“By the time they visit the nearby Saugus Iron Works, which dates back to the 1640s, they’ve already tested and mastered the centuries-old technology.(当他们参观附近可追溯至17世纪40年代的索格斯钢铁厂时,他们已经测试并掌握了这项有数百年历史的技术。)” 根据Bridge Project部分“Students don’t restrict themselves to one discipline but rather look into maths, literature, history, science — whatever is appropriate to the study (学生们不局限于一门学科,而是研究数学、文学、历史、科学——任何适合该研究的学科)”可知,该项目强调多学科整合。故选B。 B Last summer, 17-year-old Li Mei from Chengdu stepped off the plane in Paris, carrying her beloved erhu - a traditional Chinese two-stringed instrument that was passed down from her grandmother. A. To explain the disadvantages of AI tools. B. To show how well AI tools could help workers. C To forecast changes in the future working environment. AI Tools Help but also Harm Worker Performance 【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. 根据第一段“They are designed to interact smoothly with humans and perform high-level writing and creative work.(它们被设计成能与人类流畅地互动,并能执行高水平的写作和创造性工作。)””及第二段“In recent months, these tools have demonstrated an ability to produce high-quality work.(最近几个月,这些工具已经证明了产生高质量工作的能力。)”” 根据第四段“The main findings suggest that AI tools like ChatGPT can greatly improve worker performance.(主要研究结果表明,像ChatGPT这样的人工智能工具可以极大地提高员工的绩效。)”” 根据最后一段“The team suggests one of the biggest barriers to companies effectively using AI is not knowing which tasks can be completed best with the technology. Finding this out will require businesses to carry out thoughtful research and training efforts in order to find the right mix of AI and human-level work.(该团队表示,企业有效使用人工智能的最大障碍之一是不知道哪些任务可以用这项技术完成得最好。 故选A。 通读全文,尤其是第一段“They are designed to interact smoothly with humans and perform high-level writing and creative work. 和第五段“But for tasks ChatGPT 4 was not right for, humans relied too much on the AI and were more likely to make mistakes.(但对于ChatGPT 4不适合的任务,人类过于依赖人工智能,更容易出错。)” D。 D On a hot summer afternoon, a child eagerly watched as their grandmother sliced a sun-ripened tomato topped with sugar—a refreshing summer treat. Hope, however, lies in the gene pool of traditional and wild tomato varieties. 13 What does SAAS’s recent study find? 15 Which is a potential solution to the core problem discussed in the text? A. Discovering highly productive genes. B. Analyzing different types of tomatoes. C. Introducing disease-resistant elements. D. Using rare genes in wild tomato varieties. B 13. C 14. D 15. 根据文章第一段“On a hot summer afternoon, a child eagerly watched as their grandmother sliced a sun-ripened tomato topped with sugar—a refreshing summer treat. The sandy, sweet-sour juice with melted sugar always made one lick plates clean. Decades later, that same child, now an adult, finds disappointedly supermarket tomatoes firm to the touch, pale in colour, and totally lacking in the rich flavor. Beyond a mere loss in our childhood memory, the shift is a measurable decline rooted in the farming changes and modern needs.(在一个炎热的夏日午后,一个孩子眼巴巴地看着祖母切开一颗在阳光下成熟的西红柿,上面还撒了些糖——这可是夏日里令人神清气爽的美味。 根据文章第二段“A recent study by Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences (SAAS) shows alarming trends: pink tomatoes lost over 26%sugar-acid ratio, while red types dropped 22%, coupled with rising organic acids. These practices unintentionally affect how flavor-giving chemicals are released, leaving tomatoes structurally undamaged but flavorless.(特殊风味成分的缺失让情况变得更糟。 根据文章最后一段“A 2019 comprehensive study on genes, analyzing over 700 tomato types, identified 4,873 previously undocumented genes, including rare genetic variations that improve flavors. By reintroducing these “lost” genetic elements through scientific methods, scientists aim to balance marketability and taste quality.(2019年一项关于基因的全面研究,分析了700多种西红柿品种,发现了4873个此前未被记录的基因,其中包括能提升风味的罕见遗传变异。 In every culture throughout time, the kitchen has had a powerful influence. Where can we get it?” the girl sighed. Ashley thought about Emily's strawberry-apple pie in the car. “Mom, do you think Emily would be OK if I shared the pie today?” Ashley whispered to Mum. Mum softly cupped Ashley's confused face in her hands. “I think Emily would understand, honey. Best friends always listen. ” Ashley nodded, feeling a little better.
