From baking pumpkin pie to celebrating the moon, here’s how autumn is celebrated across the globe.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the biggest and most widely celebrated harvest festivals in the world. It is held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. In many Asian countries including China, the festival is celebrated as a public holiday, with families gathering and giving thanks for the harvest and full moon.
Oktoberfest is another major autumn celebration that, while originating in Germany, has inspired local versions around the globe. The world’s largest folk festival begins in September and runs for about two weeks, featuring traditional Bavarian food, music, clothing, and most importantly, lots of beer!
Thanksgiving is also an important celebration for Americans that takes place in late November every year, with seasonal dishes like yams smothered and pumpkin pies always having a place at the Thanksgiving dinner table. Walks, hikes and trips to see the changing foliage are also hugely popular, with locations like Asheville and North Carolina, boasting of some of the most beautiful autumn scenery around.
There are also several cultural and religious events that occur throughout October and November. Dia de Los Muertos, on the 1st and 2nd November, is a Mexican celebration that honours the lives of those who have passed away with food, drinks and activities that those loved ones enjoyed when they were alive. Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, is another spiritual celebration of the victory of light over darkness, and good over evil, which falls on 14th November. Lighting candles all around the house and hoping for health and wealth are the chief rituals of the festival.

Climbing in the Clouds
Edmund Percival Hillary was one of the greatest explorers of the twentieth century. He was born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1919. He discovered an interest in mountain climbing while he was still in high school and began climbing New Zealand’s Southern Alps.
Like his father, Hillary earned his living as a beekeeper. However, he continued to climb mountains. His goal was to climb Mt. Everest, which is the highest mountain in the world. By the early 1950s, several expeditions (探险队) had attempted to reach the summit of Everest, but all had failed. Then, in 1953, Hillary and a Nepalese (尼泊尔的) climber named Tenzing Norgay became the first two people to reach the top of the world.
Hillary’s spirit of exploration was not satisfied. He joined an expedition to Antarctica and reached the South Pole in 1958. He also made an expedition up the Ganges River to its source in the Himalayas. Sir Edmund Hillary was a brave adventurer. He went where no man or woman had gone before.
Although Hillary was best known as the young man who climbed to the summit of Mt. Everest in the 1950s, he continued his journeys to far-off places into his senior years. For instance, in his mid-sixties Hillary flew to the North Pole with Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon. Moreover, Hillary authored many books. However, his most lasting gift, perhaps, was the Sir Edmund Hillary Himalayan Trust (信托基金) . It raised millions of dollars and contributed to schools, hospitals and many other public improvements in the Sherpa villages of Nepal. In January 2008, Sir Edmund Hillary died at the age of 88.
Despite being a great adventurer and known for the treasure he left, Sir Edmund Hillary always modestly referred to himself as a simple beekeeper from New Zealand.

C. Money-raising. D. Story-writing.
9. Hillary became well-known because ________.

SHOULD WE FIGHT NEW TECHNOLOGY?
This morning, I saw the shocking headline: “Passenger Dies When Car Crashes in Driverless Mode”. In the article, various people said that the public should oppose the idea of developing driverless cars. They said that some advances in technology were unnecessary and could even be dangerous. Hence, we should stop accepting technology just because it is new. The newspaper reported that the car company had already apologised for the accident, but the families of the dead said it was not enough. Nevertheless, the company still claimed that most people would be travelling in driverless cars one day soon.
On the one hand, there are many different groups of people around the world who live happily without new technology. Probably the most well-known are the Christians living in rural America. They do not own or drive cars, watch TV, or use the Internet. They advocate (提倡) a simple life with an emphasis on hard work, family, and community. They think that is better than caring about luxuries or following the lives of the rich and famous. It could even be argued that the Amish’s, quality of life is better since they live in and appreciate the natural environment rather than living in large, polluted cities.
On the other hand, new technology has provided people everywhere with many benefits over the years. For example, the latest weather-tracking computer programmes give people lots of warnings about potential natural disasters, which saves many lives. Moreover, the Internet has made it possible for friends and family to keep in touch easily even if they are on opposite sides of the world.
Personally, I have benefited quite a lot from technological advances. I found my career as an AI designer through a social media network. My health monitor, which I wear all the time, has also helped me get into the best shape of my life. Of course, when new technology changes the way we live, it can be a scary prospect. However, I will always look on the bright side of change and accept it rather than resist it.

B. Living in mountain areas.
C. Making full use of new technology.

A. To show it is better to use driverless cars.
B. To prove new technology will bring dangers.
C. To advise people to stop traveling in the new way.
D. To discuss the advantages and disadvantages of new technology.

【16题详解】
根据上文“We all know that honesty is an important value, and that lying is wrong.(我们都知道诚实是一种重要的价值观,而说谎是错误的)”以及后文“Researchers find that we tell on average four lies every day or almost 1,500 every year.(研究人员发现,我们平均每天说谎4次,每年说谎近1500次)”可知,空处内容与上文构成转折,指出人类撒谎的事实。故C选项“然而,我们一直都在撒谎”符合语境,故选C。
【17题详解】
根据本段内容“If people tell lies to make others feel better and won’t bring any negative effect, we call them white lies. On contrary to white lies, which refers to well-intentioned lies, black lies are told to deceive someone else for their own advantage. No doubt that black lies are harmful, but not white lies.(如果人们说谎是为了让别人感觉更好,不会带来任何负面影响,我们称之为善意的谎言。善意谎言指的是善意的谎言,与善意谎言相反,而恶意谎言指的是为了自己的利益而欺骗别人。毫无疑问,恶意的谎言是有害的,但善意的谎言却不是)”可知,本段主要介绍了恶意谎言和善意谎言。故E选项“谎言可以分为恶意谎言和善意谎言”符合语境,可以作为本段的主旨句。故选E。

【20题详解】
根据上文“Anyhow, we should always keep in mind that honesty is the best policy. As a rule, we should try our best to tell the truth and do all times. If there were no lies, could the world be better? 【答案】Dear Editor,
I am Li Hua, a senior student from Hong Xing High School. Nowadays, with the development of our society, more and more cultural relics are facing the danger of disappearing. So we must attach importance to the problem and try our best to protect them.
①As we all know, cultural relics offer us a great opportunity to learn about what happened in the past. ②Only when they are preserved well can we pass on our culture from generation to generation. As students, we can make our own contributions to preserve them. For example, we can make apps or websites about some cultural relics to tell people the stories behind them. Besides, we can call on international cooperation if it is too hard for ourselves to preserve some badly-damaged cultural relics.
I hope more and more people will become concerned about protecting our cultural relics.

Spelling was my favorite subject in fourth grade. Every week I memorized the new words, and by Friday I was prepared to take the spelling test. I usually got all the words right. My teacher, Mrs Casazza, usually wrote “Excellent!”on the top of my paper.
One day, Mrs Casazza announced to the class that we would have a spelling bee (拼字比赛) on Thursday. “Oh, no,” I thought. Last month when I had to stand in the front of the class and give a book report, my arms shook so badly that it was hard to read my paper. I was very conscious of the twenty-seven pairs of eyes on me and all I wanted to do was to run back to my seat. A spelling bee would be even worse. I wouldn’t have a paper to read from!
After lunch on Thursday, Mrs Casazza explained the rules. “Say the word, spell it, and then say it again,” she said. “Be careful not to repeat any letters.” One at a time, she pronounced a word for each student to spell. Two boys made mistakes right away and had to sit down. With sweaty hands, I waited for my turn. After the girl next to me correctly spelled her word, Mrs Casazza called my name and said “Your word is ‘echo.’”
“Echo,” I started. Then my mind went blank. Everyone was looking at me, waiting for me to speak out the first letter. But I couldn’t think. My face got hot and I was unable to finish the word. Mrs Casazza had to let me sit down. Afterwards, Mrs Casazza said it worked so well that she decided to have a spelling bee every Thursday.
Afraid that I’d mess up again, I didn’t want to go to school the following Thursday. “What’s wrong?” my mother asked. I told her about the spelling bee and explained that I was nervous when they were all looking at me. “You’re a good speller and you do so well in your tests, so just believe in yourself,” Mum said.

My mind cleared and I concentrated. Now did the word start with P-I or P-E? I knew this. We’d learned that there is a “pie” in“piece”. “I-E-C-E,” I said. “Piece.”
Paragraph 2:
“Very good,” Mrs Casazza said with a cheerful smile on her face. I did it once, so I knew I could do it again. Throughout the year, I even won a few spelling bees. It worked so well that I had so much fun from the spelling bee and looked forward to it every Thursday. Thanks to my mother, I wasn’t afraid of standing in the front of the class. Now, I have more confidence in myself at school, jumping at the chance to give speeches and book reports.

12. By mentioning driverless cars in Paragraph 1, the author wants to .
A. present an idea B. introduce the topic
C. give an example D. explain the reason
13. Which lifestyle do the Christians living in rural America advocate?
A. Caring about luxuries.
B. Living in mountain areas.
C. Making full use of new technology.
D. Focusing on the interaction between people.
14. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To show it is better to use driverless cars.
B. To prove new technology will bring dangers.
C. To advise people to stop traveling in the new way.
D. To discuss the advantages and disadvantages of new technology.
15. What’s the author’s attitude about technological advances?
A. Objective. B. Negative. C. Positive. D. Doubtful.

Spelling was my favorite subject in fourth grade. Every week I memorized the new words and by Friday I was prepared to take the spelling test.
