Sparks grew up mainly in north-central California, where his family moved when he was eight. He attended the University of Notre Dame on a track scholarship, but an injury ended his athletic career and led him to write his first unpublished novel. In 1988, he graduated with a major in business and held a variety of jobs. In the early 1990s, he and his wife, Cathy Cote, settled in North Carolina, which later provided a setting for his novels. While working his day job, Sparks continued to write. He cooperated with former Olympic runner Billy Mills on Wokini: A Lakota Journey to Happiness and Self-Understanding. The book, which was inspired by a Native American legend, was published in 1990. Determined to become a professional writer, Sparks spent several months working on The Notebook, his first published novel, which hit The New York Times best-seller list immediately after it reached the public in 1996. By the time the film adaptation (改编) was released in 2004, Sparks had published seven more novels. Although Sparks’s fiction usually involves love stories, he rejects the suggestion that he is a “romance novelist”. His supporters agree that Sparks explores more-serious subject matter, such as loneliness, sadness, and loss, and that many of his books feature less-than-happy endings. That is also evident in his only nonfiction work, Three Weeks with My Brother, in which he and his brother, Micah, share their own emotional responses to the deaths of their parents and sister. Sparks has devoted much of his time and literary profits to writing programs at Notre Dame and to charitable causes, most notably the Nicholas Sparks Foundation, which he and his wife established in 2011. 4. What led Sparks to write his first novel? A. A scholarship. B. His marriage. C. An accident. D. His major. 5. What do we know about The Notebook? A. It arrived in cinemas in 2004. B. It was written by two authors. C. It became a hit due to a report. D. It was Sparks’ nonfiction work. 6. Why isn’t Sparks a romance novelist? A. His stories have nothing to do with love. B. He prefers to record real events in lives. C. His books never end with happiness. D. He pays attention to various themes. 7. Which words can best describe Sparks? A. Lucky and careful. B. Tough and caring. C. Honest and brave. D. Tolerant and calm. C 5. A 6. D 7. 根据第二段中“He attended the University of Notre Dame on a track scholarship, but an injury ended his athletic career and led him to write his first unpublished novel.(他凭借田径奖学金进入圣母大学,但一次受伤结束了他的运动生涯,并促使他写出了第一部未出版的小说)”可知,一次受伤(即意外事故)促使Sparks写了他的第一部小说。 根据第三段中“Determined to become a professional writer, Sparks spent several months working on The Notebook, his first published novel, which hit The New York Times best seller list immediately after it reached the public in 1996. By the time the film adaptation was released in 2004, Sparks had published seven more novels.(决心成为一名职业作家的Sparks花了几个月时间创作了他的第一部出版小说《恋恋笔记本》,该书于1996年面向公众发行后立即登上了《纽约时报》畅销书排行榜。到2004年电影改编版上映时,Sparks又出版了七部小说)”可知,《恋恋笔记本》于2004年被改编成电影上映。故选A项。 根据第四段中“Although Sparks’s fiction usually involves love stories, he rejects the suggestion that he is a ‘romance novelist’. His supporters agree that Sparks explores more serious subject matter, such as loneliness, sadness, and loss, and that many of his books feature less than happy endings.(虽然Sparks的小说通常包含爱情故事,但他不认同自己是“言情小说家”这一说法。他的支持者们一致认为,Sparks探讨了更严肃的主题,如孤独、悲伤和失落,而且他的许多书都以不太圆满的结局收尾)”可知,Sparks不仅仅关注爱情故事,还关注各种不同的主题,所以他不是言情小说家。故选D项。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“He attended the University of Notre Dame on a track scholarship, but an injury ended his athletic career and led him to write his first unpublished novel.(他凭借田径奖学金进入圣母大学,但一次受伤结束了他的运动生涯,并促使他写出了第一部未出版的小说)”和第三段“Determined to become a professional writer, Sparks spent several months working on The Notebook, his first published novel, which hit The New York Times best seller list immediately after it reached the public in 1996.(决心成为一名职业作家的Sparks花了几个月时间创作了他的第一部出版小说《恋恋笔记本》,该书于1996年面向公众发行后立即登上了《纽约时报》畅销书排行榜)”可知,Sparks在受伤结束运动生涯后,没有放弃,而是坚持写作并取得成功,体现了他的坚韧。再根据最后一段“Sparks has devoted much of his time and literary profits to writing programs at Notre Dame and to charitable causes, most notably the Nicholas Sparks Foundation, which he and his wife established in 2011.(Sparks将大量的时间和文学收益投入到圣母大学的写作项目以及慈善事业中,其中最著名的是他和妻子在2011年成立的Nicholas Sparks基金会)”可知,他很有爱心,愿意为慈善事业付出。所以“Tough and caring(坚韧且有爱心)”最能描述他。故选B项。 C One of the biggest projects to handle plastic pollution in the UK began on 15 May. In the first Million Mile Beach Clean, around 50,000 volunteers armed with buckets and litter pickers cleaned up beaches across the UK. The volunteers hoped to remove rubbish and litter from thousands of miles of the coastline and areas of the countryside in seven days. The campaign wants to address the “crisis” of plastic waste in the ocean that affects sea creatures and harms the environment. It is thought that at least eight million pieces of plastic are washed into the world’s oceans each day. These items can take hundreds of years to break down. Surfers Against Sewage, an environmental charity based in Cornwall in England, organised the project. Hugo Tagholm, the head of the charity, said, “We are hoping the campaign will give people the opportunity to reconnect with nature and boost (提升) well-being, as well as having a positive impact on our oceans and wildlife.” The clean-up not only focused on beaches but also on streets, country lanes, parks and local waterways. There are nearly 600 registered clean-ups taking place and anyone can join in with them, or even start their own “mini clean” with fewer than 10 people. The campaign’s website beachcleans.org.uk has a list of all the cleaning that is taking place around the country, including in parks, rivers and streets. It also explains how you can start one in your own community. George, an 11-year-old volunteer from Bristol, told The Week Junior that he’s been helping to clean up his local river. “It makes me sad to see rubbish polluting the river, which is why I’m looking forward to taking part in the clean,” he said. “I also like to compete with my sister to see who can pick up the most litter and fill the most bags!” 8. What can we infer from the second paragraph? A. White pollution takes hundreds of years to stop. B. White pollution is very severe in the world. C. Sea creatures have a good effect on plastic pollution. D. Many sea creatures die of plastic pollution every year. 9. What does “It” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to? A. The list of all the cleaning. B. The campaign. C. The campaign’s website. D. The community. 10. What’s George’s attitude towards to the clean-up campaign? A. Unconcerned. B. Positive. C. Disappointed. D. Negative. 11. What’s the passage mainly about? A. A meaningful campaign will take place. B. Plastic pollution is worse and worse. C. Volunteers deal with plastic waste. D. The coastline clean-up is very necessary. B 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第二段“It is thought that at least eight million pieces of plastic are washed into the world’s oceans each day. These items can take hundreds of years to break down.(人们认为,每天至少有800万件塑料被冲入世界海洋。这些物品可能需要数百年才能分解。)”可知,从第二段我们可以推断出白色污染在世界上非常严重。故选B。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第五段“The campaign’s website beachcleans.org.uk has a list of all the cleaning that is taking place around the country, including in parks, rivers and streets. It also explains how you can start one in your own community.(该运动的网站beachclean.org.uk列出了全国各地正在进行的清洁活动,包括公园、河流和街道。它还解释了如何在你自己的社区中创建一个。)”可知,本段的it指代的是该活动的网站。故选C。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段““It makes me sad to see rubbish polluting the river, which is why I’m looking forward to taking part in the clean,” he said. “I also like to compete with my sister to see who can pick up the most litter and fill the most bags!”(他说:“看到垃圾污染这条河让我很难过,这就是为什么我期待参加这次清洁活动。”“我还喜欢和我妹妹比赛,看谁捡的垃圾最多,谁装的袋子最多!”)”可知,乔治对清理运动的态度是积极的,故选B。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“In the first Million Mile Beach Clean, around 50,000 volunteers armed with buckets and litter pickers cleaned up beaches across the UK. The volunteers hoped to remove rubbish and litter from thousands of miles of the coastline and areas of the countryside in seven days.(在第一届“百万英里海滩清洁”活动中,约5万名志愿者带着水桶和捡垃圾的人清理了英国各地的海滩。志愿者们希望在七天内清除数千英里海岸线和农村地区的垃圾和垃圾。)”可知,本文主要讲的是志愿者们参加英国为应对塑料污染而开展的一项大型环保项目,因此主旨是C选项“Volunteers deal with plastic waste.(志愿者处理塑料垃圾。)”。故选C。 D One aspect of the clean-energy change will happen inside buildings. Many homes and businesses burn natural gas for heating and cooking. Natural gas gives out greenhouse gases as well as other pollutants that can harm health. Gas appliances (家用电器) can be replaced by electric versions and tap into clean electricity. Panama Bartholomy is the director of the Building Decarbonization Coalition. His group, based in Petaluma, Calif., focuses on limiting gas emissions indoors. “We assume the electric grid (输电网) is getting cleaner over time, which it is. So, we want more and more of our heating to come from electricity.” It’s much easier to make these types of transitions when governments recommend them, says Beth Miller. She is an ecologist and consultant with Good Company. Based in Eugene, Ore, it helps companies and communities reduce their carbon footprint. Some states are already taking steps to make these changes. On September 22, for instance, California decided it would ban the sale of gas-fired space heaters and water heaters by 2030. After homes and businesses make the switch to electric alternatives, they will be more comfortable, says Bartholomy. They will be safer and cleaner, too, he adds. Instead of a gas furnace (燃气炉), an electric heat pump could both heat and cool a home. Gas heaters and stoves won’t be pumping pollution into a home’s air. And cooks will have even more control on a modern electric cooker than on a gas stove says Bartholomy. Getting natural gas out of your home is probably the largest positive impact you can have for the planet, Bartholomy says. “We all need to fight for a livable climate. There is no way to meet our climate goals while still burning gas in buildings. For a livable future, we must take measures to stop burning natural gas, though we know we have a long way to go.” And the bonus: It now looks like doing that should also save people a lot of money. 12. What is the clean energy change? A. Using electric cookers at home. B. Using natural gas to boil water. C. Using natural gas for heating. D. Using electric lights inside buildings. 13. What does the underlined word “transitions” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Promises. B. Changes. C. Plans. D. Decisions. 14. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4? A. Cooks prefer to use traditional cookers. B. Gas stoves will be replaced soon. C. Homes’ air will have more pollutants. D. Homes will be safer after the switch. 15. What is the best title of the text? A. Save Your Money at Home B. Electricity Use C. Make Use of Natural Gas D. Clean-energy Change inside buildings 【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. 根据第一段“One aspect of the clean-energy change will happen inside buildings. Many homes and businesses burn natural gas for heating and cooking. Natural gas gives out greenhouse gases as well as other pollutants that can harm health. Gas appliances (家用电器) can be replaced by electric versions and tap into clean electricity.(清洁能源变化的一个方面将发生在建筑内部。许多家庭和企业烧天然气取暖和做饭。天然气释放出温室气体以及其他有害健康的污染物。燃气家用电器可以被电动家用电器取代,并利用清洁电力)”可知,使用电动家用电器就是在使用清洁能源。故选A。 根据第二段“We assume the electric grid (输电网) is getting cleaner over time, which it is. So, we want more and more of our heating to come from electricity.(我们假设电网会随着时间的推移变得越来越清洁,事实也确实如此。所以,我们希望越来越多的供暖来自电力)”可推测,划线句子意思是:Beth Miller说,在政府的推荐下,进行这类转变要容易得多。由此可知transitions意为“转变”,和B选项同义,故选B。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“After homes and businesses make the switch to electric alternatives, they will be more comfortable, says Bartholomy. They will be safer and cleaner, too, he adds. (Bartholomy说,在家庭和企业改用电力替代品之后,它们会更舒适。他补充说,它们也会更安全、更清洁)”可推知,家将会更安全。故选D。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其第一段“One aspect of the clean-energy change will happen inside buildings. Many homes and businesses burn natural gas for heating and cooking. Natural gas gives out greenhouse gases as well as other pollutants that can harm health. Gas appliances (家用电器) can be replaced by electric versions and tap into clean electricity. Left-handed people make up around 12% of the global population. One really interesting fact that I picked up was from a scientist who believed that left-handed people tended to be more independent as a result of having to adapt to a world that is largely built for right-handed individuals.___16___! More likely to have allergies and sleep disorders A study found that left-handed people were 11 times more likely to suffer from allergies than right-handed folk.___17___. Left-handed people use the right side of the brain the most ___18___, meaning that the right side controls the left side of the body and the other way around. Hence there is a well-known saying “only left-handed people are in their right minds”. The right-hand side of the brain is thought to control the left side of the body and tasks to do with the arts and creativity. Are left-handed people smarter? ___19___! One 2007 study “Effect of handedness on intelligence level of students”shows that lefties are more likely to have higher IQ. However, another 2010 study “The relationship between hand preference, hand performance, and general cognitive ability” suggests the exact opposite! ___20___ Experiments showed that when given two tasks to complete simultaneously (同时), lefties performed best. This is because right-handed people tend to solve problems by breaking them down into parts and analyzing each piece one at a time. While left-handed people tend to look at the problem as a whole and use pattern-matching to try and solve it. A. Better at multi-tasking B. Smarter than the right-handed C. As we know, the brain is cross-wired D. This one varies depending on how dated your source is E. Here are a few more fascinating left-handed people facts F. Mixed-handed children are more likely to experience language issues G. And lefties were two and a half times more likely to suffer from sleep disorders 【答案】16. E 17. G 18. C 19. D 20. 【16题详解】 根据空前“Left-handed people make up around 12% of the global population. One really interesting fact that I picked up was from a scientist who believed that left-handed people tended to be more independent as a result of having to adapt to a world that is largely built for right-handed individuals.(左撇子约占全球人口的12%。我从一位科学家那里发现了一个非常有趣的事实,他认为左撇子往往更独立,因为他们必须适应一个主要为右撇子建立的世界)”可知研究发现左撇子更独立,根据后文“More likely to have allergies and sleep disorders(更容易有过敏和睡眠障碍)”可知接下来文章主要讲的是左撇子的一些有趣的事情,全文是总——分的结构,由此推知,空处承上启下,所以应该讲的是和左撇子有关的一些有趣的事情,E项Here are a few more fascinating left-handed people facts(这里有一些关于左撇子的有趣事实)承接上文,引出下文,符合上下文语境。故选E项。 【17题详解】 根据本段标题“More likely to have allergies and sleep disorders(更容易有过敏和睡眠障碍)”可知本段主要讲的是左撇子更容易有过敏和睡眠障碍,根据空前“A study found that left-handed people were 11 times more likely to suffer from allergies than right-handed folk.(一项研究发现,左撇子患过敏症的可能性是右撇子的11倍)”可知此处讲的是左撇子更容易患过敏症,所以可以推断接下来应该讲的是睡眠障碍问题,G项And lefties were two and a half times more likely to suffer from sleep disorders(左撇子患睡眠障碍的可能性是左撇子的2.5倍)指出了左撇子更容易患有睡眠障碍,符合上下文语境。故选G项。 【18题详解】 根据本段小标题“Left-handed people use the right side of the brain the most(左撇子使用右脑最多)”可知本段主要讲的是左撇子更容易使用右脑,根据空后“meaning that the right side controls the left side of the body and the other way around.(也就是说,大脑的右侧控制着身体的左侧,反之亦然)”可知此处是在对左右脑的交叉控制这一事实进行解释,所以空处应该指出大脑是交叉控制的这一事实,C项As we know, the brain is cross-wired(正如我们所知,大脑是交叉的)符合上下文语境。 可知本段主要围绕着左撇子的是不是更聪明来展开,根据空后“One 2007 study “Effect of handedness on intelligence level of students” shows that lefties are more likely to have higher IQ. However, another 2010 study “The relationship between hand preference, hand performance, and general cognitive ability” suggests the exact opposite!( 2007年一项名为“用手习惯对学生智力水平的影响”的研究表明,左撇子更有可能拥有更高的智商。然而,另一项2010年的研究“用手偏好、用手表现和一般认知能力之间的关系”得出了完全相反的结论!)”可知关于左撇子的智商问题不同日期的研究结果是不一样的。空处位于段首,应是对全段的概括,所以空处应该讲关于左撇子是不是更聪明这个问题的答案与消息来源的日期有关,D项This one varies depending on how dated your source is(这取决于你的资料来源的年代)明确指出关于左撇子是不是更聪明这个问题的答案与消息来源的日期有关,既回答了小标题的提问,同时也概括了全段,而且D项中的This one指代小标题的问题,符合上下文语境。故选D项。 【20题详解】 根据空后“Experiments showed that when given two tasks to complete simultaneously (同时), lefties performed best. This is because right-handed people tend to solve problems by breaking them down into parts and analyzing each piece one at a time. While left-handed people tend to look at the problem as a whole and use pattern-matching to try and solve it.(实验表明,当同时完成两项任务时,左撇子表现最好。 故选A项。 A baby giraffe born with a leg abnormality has been fitted with special leg braces (支架) to help her walk. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do. The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely. Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! C One of the biggest projects to handle plastic pollution in the UK began on 15 May. D One aspect of the clean-energy change will happen inside buildings.
