Module2 Unit3 Festivals and customs Extended Reading:A precious family dinner 1、 Teaching aims: By the end of this section, students will be able to: 1. understand the content of the article;grasp the structure and writing skill; 2. know more about the customs of the Chinese New Year; 3. understand the deep meaning of the family dinner on the Chinese New Year’s Eve; 二、Key points and difficult points: 1. Master the time line and the structure of the feature article; 2. Understand the reasons why Luo Yan and his parents attach so much importance to this family dinner; 3. Strengthen the patriotism of the students and improve their pride and confidence in our nation. 三、Teaching methods: communicative approach, situational approach ,group work and pair work. 四、Teaching procedure: Step1:Review and lead-in Look at the pictures and answer the three questions. 1.When do we put it up on the wall and on the window? 2.When it comes to the Spring Festival, how do your family celebrate it ? 3.What is the main activity during the Spring Festival? Teaching aim:To arouse the students’ interest in the passage and lead in the topic of the passage. Step2 Fast reading: 1. Prediction According to the title and pictures of the text, answer the following questions: Q1:Who might be the readers? Q2:What is the main idea of this article? Teaching aim: To let students have a brief understanding of the passage. 2. Read for structure and figure out the main idea of each part. According to the time line, the article can be divided into three parts. before dinner at dinner after dinner (para3-4) (para1-2) (para5-6) Teaching aim: To let students know the structure of the passage. Step3 Detailed reading 1. Before dinner(Paras3-4): Read paras3-4 and answer the following questions: Q1:What is the change in Luo’s journey back home? What does this change imply? Q2: What symbols of the Spring Festival can you find in Para.4 ? And what do they represent? Everything represents joy, luck and happiness. Watch a video about the origin of Spring Festival. Q3: What does the fish on the plate mean? Can you give more examples like this ? Yu (鱼—余) 2. During dinner(paras1-2) Q1:What food does Luo’s family serve on the table? Chicken, duck, pork, fish, vegetables and soup. Q2: Can you find any words and sentences in Para.2 that can describe the family’s happy atmosphere? Watch a video about it. 3. After dinner(paras5-6) Q1. List their family entertaining activities after dinner. Q2.What is Luo Yan’s hope ?What is home in his mind? Q3. What are they celebrating? They are celebrating their good fortune,their family’s togetherness and their nation’s strength. What is the meaning of the Spring Festival in your view? Teaching aim: To let students know the detailed information of Spring Festival, and analyse the deep meaning of it to Chinese. and strengthen the patriotism of the students and improve their pride and confidence in our nation. Step4 Critical thinking:(group work) Why do the Chinese people attach so much importance to reunion during the Spring Festival? The answer to this question is deeply rooted in the traditional Chinese culture, which is characterized by a sense of family, or a sense of belonging. The concept of family has a great influence on the Chinese people, and three generations living under the same roof is good proof of a thriving family. Teaching aim: To let students know the traditional concepts behind the Spring Festival.
