A great-grandfather has spent half a century drawing almost his entire village on a 100ft scroll (长卷纸) he bought for 10 shillings back in 1969. The 30m scroll now features 320 pencil and ink drawings of buildings from his hometown Aldridge. It includes images of lost hotels, shops and streets as well as drawings of how this British town still looks today.
Maurice Ivor Birch bought the long sheet of paper from a car boot sale. He said, “We went to a sale in Cannock when my son was around four in 1969 and I spotted this great big roll of paper. I thought I could have that because I used to do little cartoon sketches (素描) of animals for my son to colour in and it seemed perfect.” After doing about 80 sketches, the self-taught artist thought about what else he could do.
Later, he started drawing buildings of Aldridge where he has lived all his whole life. “A lot of the buildings have gone. I managed to draw some from what I remembered while others were from old photographs and history books. Each sketch probably took me about eight hours. It’s just been a hobby that has continued to grow for over half a century,” Maurice said.
Maurice’s scroll features Aldridge’s former railway station and the old Avion Cinema. He added, “I have managed to sketch the whole of the old high street, which is unrecognizable today. I have seen this village change greatly over the years. This is a great way to mark its past. Hopefully, it will be a legacy (遗产) showing the way Aldridge used to be. I’ve always wished my children could see Aldridge as it was and this way they sort of can. It’s a nice little piece of memory to leave for my kids and grandchildren.”
24.What does the scroll primarily represent about Aldridge?
A.A guide to recent village attractions.
B.An exploration of modern buildings.
C.A study on its rapid business development.
D.An artistic record of its changes over time.
25.Why did Maurice buy the scroll?
A.To use it for creative art.
B.To satisfy his son’s expectations.
C.To start a family tradition.
D.To take up a new hobby.
26.How did Maurice try to recreate the images of Aldridge?
A.By communicating with known historians.
B.By learning traditional photography skills.
C.By relying on memory and related sources.
D.By visiting cultural sites and local citizens.
27.What does Maurice expect to do with his drawings?
A.Educate children about the power of creativity.
B.Keep Aldridge’s history for future generations.
C.Decorate Aldridge’s railway station walls.
D.Support the effort to repair old buildings.

Every year, over 3,000 dogs from Chihuahuas to Great Danes gather in New York City for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, the oldest dog competition in the world since 1877. While audiences enjoy watching well-trained dogs showcase their skills, Paul Campanella works tirelessly backstage as the event’s chief organizer.
As senior director, Campanella manages every detail from scheduling to safety. His team transforms venues like Madison Square Garden into canine competition spaces, coordinating lighting, decorations, and TV broadcasts. Planning for next year’s event begins immediately after the current show ends, with budget management being crucial. As a nonprofit organization, the club must carefully track every dollar spent on this four-day spectacle (精彩演出)。
Campanella’s journey with dogs began unexpectedly. Starting as part-time security in 2001while working as a police officer, he later created new competition categories after joining fulltime in 2013. His childhood passion for dogs — sparked by his first basset hound Starr — now fuels his work judging competitions and showcasing his own fox terrier Nigel.
Organizing live events requires quick thinking and adaptability. “You must solve unexpected problems instantly,” Campanella explains. He emphasizes that success requires strong organizational skills, teamwork, and financial management abilities. Though he studied criminal justice, he recommends business education for event planning careers.
What makes his challenging job rewarding? “Working with dogs daily combines my professional skills with lifelong passion,” Campanella smiles. From nervous first-time competitors to crowd-cheered champions, every wagging (摇晃) tail reminds him why careful preparation matters. His story shows how combining practical skills with personal interests can create dream careers.
28.Why is budget management crucial for the event?
A.The club aims to earn maximum profits.
B.Television broadcasts require special funding.
C.Venues like Madison Square Garden are expensive.
D.The Westminster Kennel Club is a nonprofit organization.
29.What motivated Campanella’s passion for dogs?
A.His police officer career. B.His first basset hound Starr.
C.Winning dog competitions. D.Television broadcasting.
30.What is Campanella’s attitude towards the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show?
A.Supportive but impatient with details.
B.Dismissive and passively prepared.
C.Stressed yet satisfied with the outcomes.
D.Enthusiastic and deeply committed.
31.Considering a career in event planning, which of the following does Campanella suggest?
A.Studying criminal justice. B.Pursuing business education.
C.Working part-time in security. D.Owning multiple dog training skills.

Scientists have long known that plastics are damaging the oceans. However, they were not sure where all the plastic waste came from. A new study shows that much of it is floating in the air.
A team of scientists from the United States and Denmark recently published their findings. They discovered that small pieces of plastic, called microplastics, are floating in the air all over the world. These tiny plastic particles (颗粒) are so small that they can be breathed in by humans.
The researchers collected air samples from 11 locations around the world. They used special equipment to filter (过滤) the air and collect the microplastics. They found an average of 1,000 pieces of microplastics per cubic meter of air. In some places, the number was even higher.
The sources of these microplastics are not completely clear. But the researchers believe that they come from a variety of sources, including plastic bags, bottles, and synthetic (合成的) clothing. When these plastics break down, they release small particles into the air.
The presence of microplastics in the air is a concern because they can be harmful to human health. When people breathe in these particles, they can cause problems in the lungs and other organs. The researchers also said that microplastics in the air can be carried long distances by the wind. This means that they can spread to areas where there is little or no plastic production.
32.What did the new study find?
A.There is more plastic waste in the air than in the ocean.
B.Microplastics are floating in the air all over the world.
C.The sources of plastic waste are clear.
D.Microplastics are too big to be breathed in by humans.
33.How did the researchers collect air samples?
A.By using special equipment.
B.By using plastic bags.
C.By using bottles.
D.By using synthetic clothing.
34.What is the main concern about microplastics in the air?
A.They can cause air pollution.
B.They can be carried long distances by the wind.
C.They can be harmful to human health.
D.They can spread to areas with no plastic production.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.The Damage of Plastics to the Oceans
B.The Sources of Plastic Waste
C.Microplastics in the Air
D.The Effects of Microplastics on Human Health

Collapsed on the sofa, eyes half-closed, one part of your brain screams that you should be sleeping, but the other is whispering just one more episode, one more level on that game. 36 As defined by researchers Kroese, it is the habit of needlessly and voluntarily delaying going to bed, despite foreseeably being worse off as a result.
Why do we keep stuck in the cycle of bedtime procrastination (拖延)? The answer, it turns out, is a mix of digital distractions and our own psychological tendencies. 37 Besides, when we’re dealing with negative emotions, it’s appealing to drown them out with some entertainment until we’re too tired to feel anything.
How can we break the bad cycle and get back our good night’s sleep? Here are some practical strategies.
Establish a consistent bedtime routine. Think back to your childhood. Many of us had bedtime routines that included a set sleep time, a story, or perhaps a bedtime song. As adults, we can benefit from the same consistency. 38
Manage digital distractions. 39 They entertain, educate, and connect us, but they also distract and keep us awake. Try to make special tech-free times or zones in the bedroom. Use apps or tools that limit screen time or switch your device to nighttime mode to reduce blue light exposure.
40 When those negative emotions keep us up, we need to address them directly. Relaxation exercises, such as deep breathing, yoga, or meditation, can help calm our minds and prepare us for sleep.
Above all, breaking the cycle of bedtime procrastination won’t happen overnight, but every effort you make, every new habit you form, is a step in the right direction.
A.Our smart devices are double-edged swords.
B.So what exactly is this bedtime procrastination?
C.Identify the causes of it and start making changes.
D.Master stress and anxiety management techniques.
E.We can set a regular sleep schedule and try to stick to it.
F.As life goes tech-driven, we spend more time on screens.
G.What distracts us when we’re supposed to be concentrating?

In Los Angeles, California, there was an aquarium (水族馆) called “Ocean Wonders Aquarium, “located along the scenic coastline. The aquarium was home to a wide variety of ocean creatures, attracting countless visitors who were amazed at the colorful tropical (热带) fish, slow-moving seahorses, graceful jellyfish, and intelligent dolphins. However, the aquarium had to go through a major restoration, and as of December 1st last year, it closed its doors to the public. The construction was expected to last until the summer, with the entire project taking more than six months to complete.
Without visitors, the aquarium grew extremely quiet and felt like an empty space. The animals, who were used to human interaction every day, now saw very few human faces, only the familiar caretakers. Something strange began to happen. The dolphins, once energetic and lively, seemed tired, lacking the usual enthusiasm they had for play.
One morning, after the caretaker Amanda threw small fish into the dolphin’s tank, the dolphins swam lazily to the tank walls and barely showed any interest in their favorite meals. They stared blankly into the distance, their usual excitement absent. “Something’s not right,” Amanda whispered to herself
Dr. Harris was called in to investigate. He examined the dolphins and initially suspected digestive issues. “Perhaps we should reduce their food intake,” he suggested. “Give them smaller amounts of food and see if that helps with any potential digestive discomfort. ”
But after a few days, there was no improvement. The dolphins continued to suffer, showing no interest in food or play. Disappointed and worried, John, a senior caretaker, gathered the team. “What should we do?” he asked, his voice filled with concern.
Then, one of the caretakers posed an idea: “Could it be that the dolphins are lonely without the visitors?”

32.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“They discovered that small pieces of plastic, called microplastics, are floating in the air all over the world.(他们发现,被称为微塑料的小塑料碎片漂浮在世界各地的空气中。)”可知新研究发现了世界各地的空气中漂浮着微塑料,故选B。
33.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“They used special equipment to filter (过滤) the air and collect the microplastics. (他们使用特殊设备过滤空气并收集微塑料。)”可知研究人员使用特殊设备来采集样品,故选A。
34.细节理解题。根据文章第五段“The presence of microplastics in the air is a concern because they can be harmful to human health. When people breathe in these particles, they can cause problems in the lungs and other organs. (空气中微塑料的存在令人担忧,因为它们可能对人体健康有害。当人们吸入这些颗粒时,它们会导致肺部和其他器官出现问题。)”可以推断出,对空气中的微塑料最大的担忧是它们对人们的健康有害,故选C。
35.推理判断题。文章第一段“Scientists have long known that plastics are damaging the oceans. However, they were not sure where all the plastic waste came from. A new study shows that much of it is floating in the air.(科学家们早就知道塑料正在破坏海洋。
【答案】36.B 37.F 38.E 39.A 40.D

36.根据前文“Collapsed on the sofa, eyes half-closed, one part of your brain screams that you should be sleeping, but the other is whispering just one more episode, one more level on that game.(瘫倒在沙发上,眼睛半闭着,你大脑的一部分尖叫着说你应该睡觉了,但另一部分却在低语,只是再多上一集,再上一关)”以及后文“As defined by researchers Kroese, it is the habit of needlessly and voluntarily delaying going to bed, despite foreseeably being worse off as a result.(根据研究人员克罗斯的定义,这是一种不必要的、自愿推迟上床睡觉的习惯,尽管可以预见结果会更糟)”可知,后文在下定义,所以空处应是提出一个相关概念,B项“So what exactly is this bedtime procrastination?(那么睡前拖延症到底是什么呢?)”承接上文,下文则是对此问的回答。故选B项。
37.根据前文“Why do we keep stuck in the cycle of bedtime procrastination (拖延)? The answer, it turns out, is a mix of digital distractions and our own psychological tendencies.(为什么我们总是陷入睡前拖延症的怪圈?事实证明,答案是数字干扰和我们自己的心理倾向的结合)”可知,本段解释了为什么我们总是陷入睡前拖延症的怪圈,是因为数字干扰,所以F项“As life goes tech-driven, we spend more time on screens.(随着生活越来越受科技驱动,我们花在屏幕上的时间越来越多)”是对前文提到的数字干扰的详细解释,而后文“Besides, when we’re dealing with negative emotions, it’s appealing to drown them out with some entertainment until we’re too tired to feel anything.(此外,当我们处理负面情绪时,用一些娱乐来淹没它们是很有吸引力的,直到我们太累了,感觉不到任何东西)”则是对心理倾向的详细解释。故选F。
38.设空位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“Establish a consistent bedtime routine. Think back to your childhood. Many of us had bedtime routines that included a set sleep time, a story, or perhaps a bedtime song. As adults, we can benefit from the same consistency.(建立一个固定的就寝时间。回想一下你的童年。我们中的许多人都有睡前习惯,包括固定的睡觉时间,听故事,或者听睡前歌。作为成年人,我们可以从同样的一致性中受益)”可知,本段主要讲述建立一个固定的就寝时间,所以E项“We can set a regular sleep schedule and try to stick to it.(我们可以制定一个有规律的睡眠时间表,并尽量坚持下去)”符合本段主题,是对前文的总结。故选E项。
39.根据前文“Manage digital distractions.(管理数字干扰)”以及后文“They entertain, educate, and connect us, but they also distract and keep us awake.(它们娱乐、教育和连接我们,但它们也会分散我们的注意力,让我们保持清醒)”可知,后文讲述电子产品有好处也有坏处,所以A项“Our smart devices are double-edged swords.(我们的智能设备是一把双刃剑)”符合本段主题,下文是对本句的解释。故选A项。
40.设空位于段首,为本段中心句,根据后文“When those negative emotions keep us up, we need to address them directly. Relaxation exercises, such as deep breathing, yoga, or meditation, can help calm our minds and prepare us for sleep.(当这些负面情绪困扰我们时,我们需要直接解决它们。放松练习,如深呼吸、瑜伽或冥想,可以帮助我们平静头脑,为睡觉做准备)”可知,本段讲述怎么处理负面情绪,所以D项“Master stress and anxiety management techniques.(掌握压力和焦虑管理技巧)”符合本段主题,为中心句。故选D项。

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】
While everyone was doubtful, they decided to try something. They printed life-sized pictures of human faces, taping them onto the tank walls, creating an odd, makeshift display. It seemed absurd, like crafting temporary “scarecrow” figures, but with no other options, they hoped this would offer some form of interaction. Surprisingly, the dolphins reacted with newfound energy, swimming excitedly to the images and touched them with the noses. It was a small victory in an unconventional approach, but a hopeful sign that their solution was making a positive impact on the dolphins.
As the dolphins started to recover, the staff became more creative in their efforts. They turned to social media, asking followers to send videos of themselves waving and offering wishes to the dolphins, promising to visit once the restoration was complete. These videos were played near the tank, giving the dolphins the illusion of people surrounding them. Their behavior returned to normal, responding with more excitement, as if sensing the love and attention. Everyone realized that intelligent animals also need emotional care to thrive. It was a powerful reminder of the deep connection between humans and animals
