Dear Editor,
With the rapid development of science and technology, AI is becoming more and more popular in our daily life.
AI brings both benefits and challenges. It improves efficiency in tasks like data analysis, but may reduce human employment opportunities. Personally, I use AI for homework research and language learning. It helps me understand complex concepts quickly. However, I hope future AI development will focus more on assisting humans rather than replacing us. Ethical guidelines should be established to ensure AI serves humanity positively.
Looking ahead, I’m excited about AI’s potential in education and healthcare, where it can make knowledge more accessible and improve medical diagnoses.
Yours,
Li Hua

The Secret Garden, published in 1911, inspired Britain’s gardening culture. Today, even with limited space in cities, their love for gardening remains strong. Around half the population spend free time gardening. In British cities like London, creative ways of gardening like rooftop gardens and rented (租赁) land plots are popular.
Similarly, in China, the “gardening DNA” runs deep. Many schools now include gardening in labor classes to bridge textbook knowledge with hands-on experience. Students take turns to care for class vegetable plots and record plant growth. “Digging soil, planting seeds, and removing pests (害虫) help students understand life and responsibility,” says Ms. Li, a biology teacher.
Gardening is not just a hobby for Chinese. For example, many Chinese families grow scallion (香葱) because they are important to our diet. In a Hangzhou neighborhood, an old parking lot was turned into a community garden where elders teach kids to recycle kitchen waste.
Research shows that 15 minutes of daily gardening can reduce stress by 20%. Scientists say gardening is a good way to unwind after busy work or study. When we plant a seed, we grow hope and create a peaceful “mind garden”. As The Secret Garden says, “Where you tend a rose... A thistle (蓟草) cannot grow.”

At Tradewinds Middle School in the US, you can see a very special school garden. Green vegetables, strawberries and other plants grow out of plastic bottles hanging along a fence.
In order to encourage students to take part in the Green Schools Recognition Program and create a nice environment, the school asks the sixth, seventh and eighth graders to grow different kinds of plants in their classrooms. Then they will move the plants to the campus. At the same time, students need to collect and analyze data (分析数据) of the plants. Surprisingly, they are very happy to do the job.
Lauren Butcher, the Green Schools Recognition Program organizer, says students learn more than just the skills of gardening. They learn a bigger-picture lesson, too. They discover that they can have an effect on the world around them. “Students see that their learning matters and that their action counts,” Butcher adds. “And it’s just not that they will help one day, but they are having an influence right now.”
At Tradewinds, students who labour in the school garden enjoy eating mulberries (桑葚) right off the bushes, giggling (咯咯笑) about the juice that turns their hands and clothes pink. “When you go to the store, you say, ‘Oh, buy this.’ But you don’t really understand where it comes from,” says seventh grader Sabrina Swayne, 13. “But when you grow it yourself, you get satisfaction from what you have done. You’re eating, saying, ‘Wow! We did so much for it, so we can eat this!’”
What’s more, while undertaking the careful process of growing plants, students can learn about how human development impacts ecosystems (生态系统). It makes them realize the importance of protecting the earth and inspires (激励) them to do something useful for the world.
18.Why is the school garden at Tradewinds Middle School very special?

Deep down, we all want to connect with each other. And Rose shows us how this can be done, with her positive energy. She is a real bridge between two different cultures. People see her as “the foreign wife who most understands Chinese worldly wisdom (人情世故)” in China.

阅读下面短文,用英语回答短文后的问题。
The book I would like to talk about is The Merchant of Venice (《威尼斯商人》). The book is a dramatic work by Shakespeare, a famous English writer in the16th century. It tells the story of conflicts and deals between merchants in Venice. The main characters are Bassanio, Portia, Shylock and Antonio.
The drama begins with Antonio, who helps Bassanio borrow money from Shylock, and then brings out other stories. Bassanio is a poor merchant. He needs money to follow his dream to marry Portia—a wealthy and beautiful lady. He asks his friend Antonio, also a merchant in Venice, for help. Antonio borrows the money from Shylock, a Jewish moneylender. Shylock is a little mean and loves money very much. Antonio promises he will pay the money back in three months, otherwise Shylock will be allowed to cut one pound of flesh from his body.
Bassanio successfully wins Portia’s love but soon discovers that his friend Antonio cannot return the money to Shylock on time. Bassanio rushes back to Venice and joins the trial (审判). The reason why Antonio couldn’t return the money was that his ships were destroyed in a storm.
Portia, dressing up as a young lawyer, argues that Shylock’s contract (合同) allows him to take “one pound of flesh” but not a drop of blood. She points out that Shylock is only allowed to remove flesh, but not any blood, which is impossible.

The Secret Garden, published in 1911, inspired Britain’s gardening culture. Today, even with limited space in cities, their love for gardening remains strong. Similarly, in China, the “gardening DNA” runs deep. Many schools now include gardening in labor classes to bridge textbook knowledge with hands-on experience.

At Tradewinds Middle School in the US, you can see a very special school garden. Green vegetables, strawberries and other plants grow out of plastic bottles hanging along a fence.
