Jim Johnson, a mail carrier was an institution in the leafy Westmoreland, Westhaven and Westover Hills neighborhoods, just north of downtown Wilmington, where he delivered much more than the mail. He knew all the kids and their pets by name; he carried in the groceries; he took note of unlocked doors, offered gardening advice, and taught more than a few young boys the art of the curveball. When he wasn’t doing all that, Jim was running across a checkerboard of green lawns (草坪) to ensure the local postal service did not fall short of its daily promise.
Though the postal service is often disparaged now, the trust in local postal service lives on. In many communities, that trust is won every day when life-saving medicine, greeting cards, social security checks, college acceptance letters — even the bills — appear in mailboxes in front of the houses.
After more than three decades, Jim approached his final days on the job much like any other. He drove a boxy postal truck to North DuPont Road for the first unofficial stop of the day. Butch, a dog who belonged to one of the neighbors, was waiting just like every day before. And just like every day before, he got into the jump seat and they were off. On the route, Jim and Butch had become inseparable. Now, the dog and the mailman would ride off to retirement together. At every stop, Jim accepted the parting good wishes of families that had become his own. There were tears and laughter, and hugs filled with warm memories.
It’s been 33 years since Jim left the route, but we are still reminded of the deep bond established between community and letter carrier. That’s what the postal service means to us.
4. What do we know about Jim Johnson from the first paragraph?
A. He’s open-minded. B. He’s sharp-eyed.
C. He’s warm-hearted. D. He’s strong-willed.
5. What does the underlined word “disparaged” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Refused. B. Criticized. C. Investigated. D. Stopped.
6. What did Jim do besides daily delivery on his final days of work?
A. He drove Butch to its owner. B. He sent presents to his friends.
C. He prepared a retirement party. D. He said goodbye to the neighbors.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To remember a respected mail carrier.
B. To record an unforgettable experience.
C. To raise funds for the postal service.
D. To call for harmony in the community.
C 5. B 6. D 7. A
根据第一段中“He knew all the kids and their pets by name; he carried in the groceries; he took note of unlocked doors, offered gardening advice, and taught more than a few young boys the art of the curveball. When he wasn’t doing all that, Jim was running across a checkerboard of green lawns (草坪) to ensure the local postal service did not fall short of its daily promise. (他知道所有孩子和他们宠物的名字;他把杂货搬进来;他注意到那些没锁的门,提供园艺方面的建议,还教了几个小男孩曲球的艺术。当他不做这些事情的时候,吉姆会跑过棋盘状的绿色草坪,以确保当地的邮政服务不会达不到每天的承诺)”可推知,Jim Johnson是一个热心肠的人。故选C项。
【5题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第二段中“Though the postal service is often (虽然邮政服务经常)”及“the trust in local postal service lives on. (人们对当地邮政服务的信任仍然存在)”可知,前后句是转折关系,后半句说对当地邮政服务的信任依然存在,那么前半句应该是说邮政服务现在常被批评。由此可知,划线词disparaged与选项B意思相近,意为“批评”。故选B项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“At every stop, Jim accepted the parting good wishes of families that had become his own. There were tears and laughter, and hugs filled with warm memories. (每到一站,吉姆都会接受那些已经成为他自己的家人的告别祝福。有泪水,有欢笑,有充满温暖回忆的拥抱)”可知,Jim在工作的最后几天除了每天送货外,还向邻居们告别。故选D项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章大意以及最后一段“It’s been 33 years since Jim left the route, but we are still reminded of the deep bond established between community and letter carrier. That’s what the postal service means to us. (Jim离开这条路线已经33年了,但我们仍然记得社区和邮递员之间建立的深厚联系。这就是邮政服务对我们的意义)”可知,文章主要讲述了Jim Johnson这位邮递员在工作中热心帮助邻里,与大家建立了深厚感情,在他退休33年后,作者依然记得他,表达了对他的怀念。由此推知,作者写这篇文章的目的是纪念一位受人尊敬的邮递员。故选A项。
C
Most of us know that eating too much sugar isn’t good for us. Because of a close connection between its consumption and health dangers like obesity, fatty liver disease, type 2diabetes, heart disease and cancer, sugar is high on the lists of bad habits worth giving up.
It turns out that reducing sugar intake (摄入) not only helps you avoid the harm of overconsumption, it can also bring surprising results you won’t have to wait long to benefit from. “These include improved mood, skin health, dental hygiene, cognitive function, and even athletic performance,” says Amy Goodson, a nutritionist and registered dietitian.
The first thing to understand is that not all sugar is bad for you because there’s a big difference between natural sugars and added sugars.
Natural sugars like glucose in bread, fructose in fruit and many vegetables, and lactose in milk are natural. They not only provide energy but also offer sweetness to encourage us to eat the foods that contain something important for our health.
Added sugars are what are introduced to foods or drinks during processing, cooking, or at the table. There are more than 260 names for various added sugars, which are added, most commonly, to sweeten or improve the taste of often unhealthy and over-processed foods. Worse, foods with added sugars don’t provide meaningful amounts of nutrition.
The harm connected with eating or drinking too many added sugars is big and includes an increased risk of developing autoimmune disorders such as Crohn’s disease and higher blood pressure, and increased risk of different cancers. A 2023 BMC Medicine study also shows that even a five percent increase in added sugars comes with a six percent higher risk of heart disease and a ten percent higher risk of stroke.
“Such harm occurs in part, because any consumed sugar that isn’t used for energy is stored as fat, which results in increased weight gain, leading to diabetes, obesity, and related bad results,” says Elaine Hon, a clinical dietician and education specialist at Stanford Health Care.
8. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Results of overconsumption. B. Possible sugar-connected problems.
C. Benefits of eating less sugar. D. Tips on how to reduce sugar intake.
9. What does the text say about natural sugars?
A. They help us eat more healthy foods. B. They should be consumed properly.
C. They provide little energy for bodies. D. They are always in processed foods.
10. What do the numbers in paragraph 6 show?
A. Giving up sugar is a must. B. Added sugars are harmful.
C. A balanced diet is important. D. The 2023 study is unbelievable.
11. What does Elaine Hon try to do in the last paragraph?
A. Call for an action. B. Raise some questions.
C. Give an explanation. D. Offer practical advice.
C 9. A 10. B 11. C

根据最后一段““Such harm occurs in part, because any consumed sugar that isn’t used for energy is stored as fat, which results in increased weight gain, leading to diabetes, obesity, and related bad results,” says Elaine Hon, a clinical dietician and education specialist at Stanford Health Care.(斯坦福医疗保健中心的临床营养师和教育专家伊莱恩·汉说:“造成这种伤害的部分原因是,任何摄入的不用于能量的糖都会以脂肪的形式储存起来,从而导致体重增加,导致糖尿病、肥胖和相关的不良后果。”)”

The rapid growth in skyscrapers worldwide, most of which have large windows, has led to a high demand for window washers. Though the job is well-paid, it is dangerous and accidents are not uncommon. However, if Skyline Technologies has its way, the dangerous job may soon be done by Ozmo, an intelligent window cleaning robot, with humans monitoring from the safety of the ground.
Much like humans, Ozmo, sitting on platforms hanging from the buildings, uses its arms and brushes to clean the dirt on the glass. A 3D map of the building’s surface programmed into its system allows the robot to skillfully deal with any obstacle it is likely to meet, as it moves up and down the buildings. The robot will self-correct and move around every obstacle that it might have met so as not to break a window.
Unlike present window washers, the robot cleaner does not require soap to clean the glass. Instead, it just uses distilled (蒸馏的) water to do the job. Yaron Schwarcz, CEO of Skyline Robotics, explains, “We are environmentally friendly.” Ozmo is also expected to be much more efficient than its human counterparts. While it presently takes three cleaners 480 hours each to clean windows of a 40-storey glass building, the robot will be able to do it in 80 hours. However, unlike other robots, Ozmo will not replace human workers, and only make their jobs safer by making them supervisors, who will be controlling the operation from the safety of the ground.
Whether Ozmo, which is still being tested, does as good a job as humans is not clear. If things go well, its creators have much bigger ambitions for Ozmo. Schwarcz told Forbes Magazine, “Window cleaning is just the tip of the iceberg. We plan to replace all tasks that are dangerous and dirty.”
12. Which statement about Ozmo is true?
A. Ozmo lacks the ability of dealing with obstacles.
B. Ozmo’s efficiency is based on high quality of soap.
C. Ozmo can do the cleaning task totally independently.
D. Ozmo works with the assistance of a 3D map of the building’s surface.
13. Why is Ozmo friendly to our environment?
A. It depends on solar energy. B. It uses less soap than other robots.
C. It consumes nothing made from chemicals. D. It makes our ecosystem more balanced.
14. What do the Schwarcz’s words mean?
A He has confidence in Ozmo. B. He is doubtful of Ozmo.
C. Ozmo costs too much. D. Ozmo has replaced humans.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Robots make a difference. B. Meet Ozmo, window cleaning robot.
C. Humans are free from cleaning. D. Intelligent Ozmo, known worldwide.
D 13. C 14. A 15. B

根据第三段中“Unlike present window washers, the robot cleaner does not require soap to clean the glass. Instead, it just uses distilled (蒸馏的) water to do the job. Yaron Schwarcz, CEO of Skyline Robotics, explains, “We are environmentally friendly.”(与现在的窗户清洁工不同,这种机器人清洁工不需要肥皂来清洁玻璃,而是只使用蒸馏水来完成工作。Skyline Robotics的首席执行官Yaron Schwarcz解释说:“我们是环保的”)”可知,Ozmo对环境友好是因为它不消耗任何化学物质制成的东西。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“If things go well, its creators have much bigger ambitions for Ozmo. Schwarcz told Forbes Magazine, “Window cleaning is just the tip of the iceberg. We plan to replace all tasks that are dangerous and dirty.”(如果一切顺利,它的创造者会对Ozmo有更大的野心。Schwarcz告诉《福布斯》杂志:“清洁窗户只是冰山一角。我们计划取代所有危险和肮脏的工作”)”可知,Schwarcz的话意味着他相信Ozmo的能力,对Ozmo很有信心。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是文章第一段中“if Israel-based start-up Skyline Technologies has its way, the dangerous job may soon be done by Ozmo, an intelligent window cleaning robot, with humans supervising from the safety of the ground.(如果以色列的Skyline Technologies能够成功的话,(摩天大楼清洗玻璃)这项危险的工作可能很快就会由Ozmo 完成,一个智能的擦窗机器人,人类在地面的安全监督下)”引出了本文讨论的话题,同时文章主要介绍了Ozmo的工作原理、优势以及它未来的应用计划。

My dad and I had been looking forward to the Stale cross-country race of my senior year of high school which would be the climax (顶点) of my existence.
I was the fastest runner on my team, and I was supposed to make it into the top fifteen. We had been working towards this race for three years. It was everything to me, and it was everything to my dad. He was a runner and was wild with joy by my success in running. He made it to every race, even flying home early from business trips to see me run. I always listened for his voice, which rang above the crowd-telling me to relax my arms, calling out my time. He pushed me. He cheered for me. He believed in me. We spent countless hours on the sandy canals of Arizona. Breathing in the dust of the desert, the blossoms of the orange trees, and the terrible smell of the dairy farm, we made our way across the city. We pounded miles and miles into our running shoes, marking with every step the path to greatness. It was a journey that was just ours. A dream passed on from one generation to the next.
Then the big day came. It was hotter than normal - too hot. My throat felt like a field of cotton, cracked with the summer heat, as I waited for the gun to fire. I gazed out at the crowd; dozens of familiar faces from church and school flickered across my view. They had come for me. They were counting on me. I saw my dad set his watch, worry and excitement etched across his face. With the sound of a gunshot, the race began.
For the first two and half miles, I felt great. I had never before been so ready for something. The weeks leading up to the race were filled with hard practices and a strict diet. The scorching sun beat upon my back, blinding me with its brilliance. Nothing was going to stop me, though.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
However, without warning, my strength was running out. My lungs fought to take in enough air, and my feet transformed into cement bricks. Neck and neck with one of my greatest rivals, I could see the finish line. I had begun the final sprint into glory when my knees buckled and my legs gave way. Nothing I could do would make them hold my weight. They were as weak as jelly. Even though I knew my dreams of victory had been destroyed, I had to finish the race. With all of the strength left in me, I got on my hands and knees and crawled, inch by inch, across the finish line. Shame pulsed through my veins as Dad squatted down and pulled me into his arms.
I whispered, “I’m so sorry I disappointed you, Dad.” He gave me a gentle smile and said, “You could never disappoint me. Sometimes these things just happen. All that matters is that you did your best.” Lifting my face, I saw my dad’s eyes, in which I saw the sweat, the time, and the work we had put into our dream. The miles we had run together, all for this race, flashed across my mind. “But we worked so hard. What about our dream” I asked. In that second, the world stood still. He reached over for my hand, holding back his own tears, and said, “Don’t you know that you are my dream come true ”

My dad and I had been looking forward to the Stale cross-country race of my senior year of high school, which would be the climax (顶点) of my existence.
