It grows fast and is very thin. The oak is a tree. It grows slow, straight and strong. It’s even thought to be a symbol of strength. A few years ago there was a big storm in Britain. It destroyed many old oaks that people thought could never be destroyed. There were also some bamboo trees at a zoo in Britain but they survived. The British were surprised. How could thin, fragile (脆的) bamboo trees survive a big storm when strong oaks could not? The reason is flexibility (柔韧性). The oak trees fought against the wind with their strength but the wind turned out to be stronger. The bamboo trees didn’t. Their flexibility allowed them to bend and let the wind pass by. Life is full of changes and we really can’t stop them. Recently some students at my school were upset when they got a new English teacher. They liked their old teacher and they didn’t like the new one who had a different personality and a different style of teaching. Some students behaved (表现) like oaks. They refused to change and just stopped learning. Other students behaved like bamboo. It’s no surprise that the marks of the “oak” students went down but the marks of the “bamboo” students went up. When change comes into your life, don’t fight against it and break like an oak. Bend a little like bamboo and you will achieve success. 1.What is the oak thought to be? 2.What did a big storm do to many old oak trees in Britain a few years ago? 3.Does the underlined word “survived” in Paragraph 2 mean “continued to live” or “stopped growing”? 4.How did bamboo trees show their flexibility in a storm? 5.What job does the writer probably do? 6.Why didn’t some students like the new teacher? 7.Are you an “oak” student or a “bamboo” student? What do you do when you meet change in your life? We all know that trees are really important to us. They give us oxygen (氧气) , which we need to breathe (呼吸) . Trees are also our friends because they can make our lives more beautiful. There is an interesting thing about trees in Changchun. As the cold season arrives, people in Changchun start wearing sweaters and warm jackets. To people’s surprise, some large roadside trees also “wear” colorful sweaters. On Dongsi Road, trees were dressed in colorful sweaters. With bright colors, the tree sweaters have become popular among citizens (市民) and tourists (游客). Many people visit this road because they want to take photos. The sweaters warm not only the trees but also people’s hearts. We should plant more trees and take care of them to make our world more beautiful. 根据短文内容,回答下列问题。 1.What do trees give people? 2.Which road are the dressed trees on? 3.Do citizens and tourists love the trees in colorful sweaters? 4.Why do many people visit this road? 5.What should we do to make our world more beautiful according to this passage? 二、U5单元话题期末热点预测:野生动物现状 There are many different kinds of animals in the world. Some customers say they do not go there to drink coffee. Instead, they want to enjoy the “special” service. In 2013, when Zhang Lili was working in her first café, a customer gave her a note. It read, “I’m deaf. I can’t hear anything but I really love coffee. Would you give me the chance to become a barista (咖啡师)?” And the rest, as they say, was history. This person became the first deaf barista in that cafê. And there started Zhang’s story with the deaf community (社区). In 2019, Zhang and her husband started Lili Time. Over the past few years, it has become a place filled with love. After winning hearts in the deaf community with creative ideas, this café now attracts new crowds, shining like a lighthouse. Some other cafés also have deaf baristas, but they use QR codes (二维码) to help with ordering. Lili Time does not. People need to order their coffee by talking to their baristas, even though they speak slowly and sometimes not clearly enough. But this is Zhang’s plan. She wants deaf people to talk to others and be more confident. She doesn’t sell coffee by delivery service, either. She wants there to be communication between her customers and her baristas. At the same time, Lili Time provides a space for people to teach others skills. Some may teach how to take photos, for example; people from other countries may teach English, French, and so on—all for free. They come here every week. They just love helping others. Now, Zhang is thinking about opening more cafés. She has come to know a lot about children who have other problems. And she thinks that her new cafés may help these children in one way or another. Many Shanghainese believe this is a special café. 1.How did Zhang Lili’s story with the deaf community begin? She 2.Lili Time uses QR codes for ordering, doesn’t it? 3.Whom does Zhang Lili hope her cafés will help? 4.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph three meaning in Chinese? He visited families there to see what books the children read. Surprisingly, he didn't find any book in their home. And at the home of the headteacher (校长) of their primary school, there were few books. After that, Wu and his friends at Friends Camp, a volunteer organization (志愿者组织), began to give books to the primary school. Also, they started to teach children how to read in poor villages. Wu comes from Foshan, Guangdong Province. In September, 2020, he registered (注册) at Foshan Library as a member of the N-library program (项目). A family can borrow 200 books from the public library (公共图书馆) in Foshan and keep them for one year. And more than 1,000 families registered for the program. For years, Foshan has been helping these poor places. One of the fruits is the first neighborhood library (邻里图书馆) in Muli, Sichuan Province. Did you hear music at any of those places? Today most stores and restaurants play music. You might even hear music in an office or on a farm. Scientists believe that music changes the way people behave. According to some scientists, the sound of Western classical music makes people feel richer. When a restaurant plays classical music, people usually spend more money on food and drinks. When the restaurant plays modern music, people spend less money. Without background music, people spend even less. Scientists also believe that loud, fast music makes people cat faster. It’s interesting that people would like to chew (咀嚼) their food faster when the music gets faster. Some restaurants play fast music during busy hours. This gets people to eat faster and leave more quickly. In this way, restaurants can make more money. Some scientists think that music makes students think and learn better. Young people and older people do not always agree. They sometimes have different ideas about living, working and playing. But in one special programmer in New York State, adults and teenagers live together in a friendly way. Each summer 200 teenagers and 50 adults live together for eight weeks as members of a special work group. Everyone works several hours each day. They do so not just to keep busy but to find meaning and fun in work. Some teenagers work in the forests or on the farms near the village. Some learn to make things like tables and chairs and to build houses. The adults teach them these skills. There are several free hours each day. Weekends are free, too. During the free hours some of the teenagers learn photo-taking or drawing. Others sit around and talk or sing. Each teenager chooses his own way to pass his free time. When people live together, they should have rules. In this programmer the teenagers and the adults make the rules together. If someone breaks a rule, the problem goes before the whole group. They talk about it and ask, “Why did it happen? What should we do about it?” One of the teenagers has said something about it, “You have to stop thinking only about yourself. You learn how to think about the group.” 1.Young people and older people do not always agree with each other, do they? 2.How many people are there in a special work group? 3.What do the adults do in a special work group? 4.Who makes the rules in this programmer? 5.What can the teenagers learn from the talk about the problem in this programmer? Answer the questions(根据短文内容冋答问题) Over a hundred years ago people in London were surprised to see a very unusual boat come sailing up the Thames River. The boat was eighty feet long, flat-bottomed, with big wooden eyes on both sides in the front and was colourfully painted at the back. People came to know that it was a sailing boat from Fuzhou in distant China. The boat had sailed around the Cape of Good Hope, up the western coast of Africa and finally to England. It had covered fifteen thousand miles — more than half of the distance around the world. Although it was unexpected, the Chinese were warmly welcomed. The boat carried goods (货物) such as silk and tea as well as a number of gifts from the Emperor of China for the Queen of England. People had always mistakenly thought of the Chinese as a people who were not used to the sea. However, from centuries of trading and sailing in dangerous seas, the Chinese had learned how to build good boats and sail them well. The coming of this sailing boat to London proved once again the Chinese could sail to distant countries in the world. 1.When did the Chinese sailing boat arrive in London? 2.How long was the boat? 3.How many miles did the boat travel to London? 4.What did the Chinese learn to do at that time? 5.What did the writer want to prove in the passage? Bamboo is just a big piece of grass. Each summer 200 teenagers and 50 adults live together for eight weeks as members of a special work group. Everyone works several hours each day. 【答案】1.More than one hundred years ago. 2.It was 80 feet long. 3.Fifteen thousand miles. 4.To build good boats and sail them well. 5.The Chinese could reach many distant parts of the world by sea.
