Everyone needs help sometimes. People depend on (依靠) one another. That’s why communities have special people ready to help people in need.
For example, what would we do without a community fire station? If a home catches fire, as the Jacksons’ place did last week, it might be burned down (烧毁) and people might get hurt…or worse. We’re so lucky to have firemen to come to save people and put out the fire safely.
And what about police officers? They protect our families, our homes and important things. The police have helped so many families this past year, especially saving people and pets and protecting our houses and other things after the heavy rain.
Think about all the other service workers in this community. There are cleaners to collect rubbish and keep our community sanitary. We have road workers and they put up and repair traffic signs and fix holes in the streets to protect not just us, but our cars! And what would this community be without the teachers in our school and the doctors and nurses in our community hospitals?
Think again about what we eat every day and what we wear every day. We cannot produce (生产) them, but we use them all the time. These tireless workers keep our community running.
If someone finds a wallet with lots of money, is he/she likely (可能的) to return it?
A team from the US and Switzerland did an experiment (实验) in forty countries around the world. The scientists took over 17,000 “lost” wallets to different places, such as hotels, post offices and banks. Then they waited to see if the workers in these places tried to call the owner of the wallet.
The wallets were a little special. Most of the wallets had no money, some were as much money as $13. Each wallet had three cards with the information of the owner.
The scientists thought returning a lost wallet was about being honest. They wanted to know how people would act if no one was watching them. Before the experiment started, the scientists hoped that the wallets with money in them would be less likely to be returned. But in fact, it was not true. 51% of the people who found a wallet with money in it tried to contact the owner.
In the US, the UK, and Poland, the scientists decided to have a “big money” test. Some wallets had money worth about $100. In those countries, 46% of wallets with no money were returned, and 61% of those with $13 were returned. And 72% of wallets with nearly $100 were returned.
The scientists don’t know clearly why people are more likely to return a wallet with more money in it. But the act of returning a lost wallet shows a person’s good character (品质). It easily builds a good and close relationship among people.

Now there is something about the food. “This one is not as good as our General Tao Chicken,” says the introduction (介绍) of Orange Beef. Another introduction says, “Don’t let the name fool you. This one is NOT a real Sichuan dish.”
“People often find the right restaurant online. I don’t want them to say, “Oh, it’s one of the best in the neighborhood, ‘but then they come here only to find it’s not so good,” Yang said, “Customers should read more about the food before they order, not only my introductions, but also other customers’ opinions.”

Why do the leaves on trees have different colors? What makes them change their colors?
Leaves use sunlight, water and air to make food for the trees. This way of making food is called photosynthesis Photosynthesis is important to animals as well as plants. Some animals eat plants. Other animals eat these animals.
Summer is playtime. For the leaves of many trees, however, it’s work, work, work! The sun is shining. The leaves are making food for the trees. The trees keep more than enough food deep inside. Leaves are green in summer because they are making food. Leaves also have orange, yellow, or brown colors inside them. During summer, those colors are covered by the green color.
Many places get colder in autumn with shorter days and longer nights. Trees get less sunlight, so photosynthesis slows down. Over time, leaves stop making the green chemical The orange, yellow, and brown colors grow when that happens.
Once it gets cold enough and ice appears at night, the trees drop their leaves. They do this to keep themselves safe. If the leaves are icy while still on the trees, the trees can be hurt. Trees that drop their leaves are bare (光秃秃) in winter. They use the food they save in summer to get through the cold days and nights.
Spring comes before long. Ice and snow disappear and the rains come. The sun shines, and tiny leaves grow from branches. Once again , the leaves use sunlight, water and air to make food. The cycle begins again.

Everyone needs help sometimes. People depend on (依靠) one another. That’s why communities have special people ready to help people in need.

根据“Leaves use sunlight, water and air to make food for the trees. This way of making food is called photosynthesis (光合作用).”可知,光合作用是树叶为树木制造食物的一种方式。故选C。
2.细节理解题。根据“Many places get colder in autumn with shorter days and longer nights. Trees get less sunlight, so photosynthesis slows down. Over time, leaves stop making the green chemical (化学物质).”可知,秋天树木接受的阳光变少,光合作用减缓,树叶停止制造绿色化学物质,所以是秋天阳光变少导致的。故选B。
3.词句猜测题。根据“Once it gets cold enough and ice appears at night, the trees drop their leaves.”和“They do this to keep themselves safe.” 故选A。
