Every Christmas, Hovis’ family would drive from DeKalb to Rochelle, where she and her mom would join her grandma in the kitchen. The rest of the family would hang out in the living room where they could smell the sweet treats as they waited to bite into the crispy cookies. Grandma died when she was 13, but the krumkake tradition didn’t end then. This Christmas, Hovis is headed to her aunt’s house where she plans to make krumkake with her two nephews (侄子). “I’ll be able to share that with them and tell them the story of their great-grandmother,” Hovis said. “Hopefully they will have an interest in continuing that ... so the recipe and the tradition can carry on.” Krumkake Ingredients ● 3/4 cup sugar ● 1 cup flour ● 3 eggs ● 1 teaspoon vanilla ● 1 cup heavy whipping cream ● a little of salt Instructions ● Stir sugar and eggs well. ● Add half the cream to the sugar and egg mixture and mix well. ● Mix in the flour and stir until very smooth, then add the rest of the ingredients. Keep the mixture thin enough so that it spreads easily when poured. ● Pour on a very hot iron and press until browned. Bake each side of the cookie for about 30 seconds. ● Remove and immediately roll onto a stick until cool. A knife or a fork comes in handy to help you get the cookie off the iron. Enjoy! 1. It’s not the house that is, special, but rather the person who lives inside, I met Jenny about 45 years ago when she was my sister’s kindergarten teacher. I remember looking into her classroom, wishing I were her student. Jenny created a safe place where we could be whatever we wanted to be during the time. My parents told me I could start school when I was 4. However, when I turned 4iin the spring, I couldn’t understand why I had to wait until: September. For as long as I can remember, I always wanted to be a teacher. When I graduated, I couldn’t wait to invite Jenny to my classroom. She arrived one day, and I saw joy on my students’ faces when they sang the same songs I sang with her as a child. As a new teacher, I was amazed at how she connected with children. For years, Jenny volunteered in my classroom. Over the years we have shared each other’s ups and downs. She asks me for updates about my family and friends, and she tells me about hers. I am here for her no was the time to sell her house is near. I bring up boxes from her basement. We go through every painting a student has given to her, every thank-you note a parent has written and her teaching aids. I find papers featuring the letters of the alphabet. I find my own name printed in a green card. Suddenly, my mind goes back to Room 3. More than 40 years ago, Jenny sat on the carpet at her feet. We learned about the letters and their sounds. Now, Jenny sits on her rocking chair, and I find myself sitting at her feet. Over tea, we talk for hours. I listen carefully because I know I still have more to learn from her. Our friendship is one that neither one of us expected. Educators know teaching is a profession devoted to the development of young individuals. The lucky ones get to see what their students have done with their lives. The exceptional ones never leave their students’ hearts. 4. How can we best describe Jenny? A. Skilled in her teaching but impatient with her students sometimes. B. Considerate and often paying a visit to the parents of her students. C. Easy-going and good at communicating with her students. D. Generous and ready to help poor students. 5. What can we infer about the author and her teacher from the text? A. They are unwilling to visit each other. B. They usually have nothing new to share. C. They are always concerned with each other. D. They have lost contact with each other by now. 6. Why does the author take boxes from Jenny’s basement? A. Jenny’s house is to be sold. B. Jenny wants to find her teaching aids. C. Jenny expects to show her achievements in education. D. Jenny intends to offer the papers with the letters to the author. 7. What kinds of educators can be called fortunate ones? A. Those who can be devoted to the development of young individuals. B. Those who can see how their students experience their lives. C. Those who can be appreciated for their hard work. D. Those who can get in touch with their students. C 5. C 6. A 7. 根据第二段中“Jenny created a safe place where we could be whatever we wanted to be during the time. (幸运的人可以看到他们的学生在他们的生活中做了什么。)”可知,幸运的教师能看到学生们生活中的成就和经历。故选B项。 C Three paralysed (瘫痪的) men, who were told they would spend the rest of their lives in a wheelchair, are able to walk again, thanks to an electrical device, which was placed around the men’s spines (脊柱) and boosted signals from their brains to their legs. The first patient to be treated was 30-year-old Swiss man David M’zee, who suffered a severe spinal injury several years ago in a sporting accident. David’s doctor said he would never walk again. However, thanks to the electrical device developed by a team at a public research university in Lausanne, Switzerland, he agreed to take part in a trial led by Dr. Courtine at the university. “I came with my daughter, Charlotte, who was one month old at the time. As we approached David, he looked her in the eye and said, ‘I will walk before you,’” Dr Courtine recalls. “When Charlotte took her first step she was 14 months old, by which time David was walking by Lake Geneva. He said to her, ‘I have beaten you.’” David can now walk up to eight paces when the device is switched off and this is the first time that this has been recorded in a chronic (慢性的) spinal injury. However, out of the lab, in the real world, it is hard for David to walk more than a few paces. The signals from the device soon become uncomfortable and so can’t be used all the time. The system is also expensive and not reliable enough to be used out of the laboratory for day-to-day use, so it’s far from a cure. David is the first of three patients who have benefited from the first wave of the treatment. Two other men have also managed to walk again, to various degrees. The researchers plan to begin larger trials in Europe and the US in the next few years. If these go well, the researchers are confident the system could become more widely available. 8. How does the electrical device help the paralysed walk again? A. By straightening the spines. B. By making the brains recover. C. By signaling the legs to move. D. By making use of a wheelchair. 9. Why does Dr. Courtine mention his daughter? A. To point out David’s weakness. B. To explain David’s failure to walk. C. To show the speed of David’s recovery. D. To prove his daughter’s athletic ability. 10. What is the problem with the device? A. It is hard for typical patients to operate. B. It is unreliable when used out of the lab. C. It always makes patients uncomfortable. D. It sometimes sends wrong signals to legs. 11. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. The device can cure paralysis. B. The device has been widely used. C. The device will be tested globally. D. The device has a potential market. C 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第一段“thanks to an electrical device, which was placed around the men’s spines (脊柱) and boosted signals from their brains to their legs. (多亏了一个电子设备,它被放置在患者的脊柱周围,并增强了大脑到腿部的信号。)”可知,这个电子设备是对腿部发出信号,支持腿活动, C项“通过指示腿部移动”符合题意。故选C项。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“he looked her in the eye and said, ‘I will walk before you,’ 他看着她的眼睛说,“我会在你之前走路。”)”以及“by which time David was walking by Lake Geneva. He said to her, ‘I have beaten you.’ (到那时,David已经在日内瓦湖边走路了。他对她说,“我已经打败了你。”)”可知,Dr. Courtine列举他女儿作为例子的原因是为了展示David的康复速度,C项“展示David恢复的速度”符合题意。故选C项。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“The signals from the device soon become uncomfortable and so can’t be used all the time. (设备发出的信号很快就会变得不舒服,所以不能一直使用。)”和“The system is also expensive and not reliable enough to be used out of the laboratory for day-to-day use(这个系统也很昂贵,并且不够可靠,不能在实验室外日常使用)”可知,这表明设备在实验室外使用时存在可靠性问题。 根据最后一段“The researchers plan to begin larger trials in Europe and the US in the next few years. If these go well, the researchers are confident the system could become more widely available. (研究人员计划在未来几年在欧洲和美国开始更大规模的试验。如果这些试验进展顺利,研究人员相信这项系统可能会更广泛地得到应用。)”可知,这项设备具有潜在的市场前景。D项“设备具有潜在市场”符合题意。故选D项。 D For so long, failure has been pictured as something negative, something to be ashamed of and something to be kept a secret. But a Swedish psychologist, Samuel West, has decided to put our worst fears on the table. He is opening a museum -- the Museum of Failure -- in Helsingborg, Sweden, this June. Instead of showing successes as museums usually do, the Museum of Failure will display over 60 “failed” products from big-name companies such as Nokia, Apple and Coca-Cola. “I really hope you see that these mega-brands that everybody respects, they screw up too,” West told The New York Times. “I hope that makes you feel less nervous about learning something new.” West’s opinion isn’t a new one. Albert Einstein once said, “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” And this idea has been embraced by lots of companies in the US. Silicon Valley, for example, is the home of some of the world’s most creative companies, yet its slogan turns out to be, quite surprisingly, “Fail fast, fail often.” However, there are reasons for this. “The best companies are those that encourage failure, embrace out-of-the-box thinking, and allow employers to make mistakes and see what happens,” wrote Simon Casuto of Forbes. But some people are doubtful of this so-called “culture of failure”. They are worried that if failure becomes a “symbol of honor”, as Wired magazine put it, it may even be seen as “uncool” when someone tries to reduce the risk of failure. This may push people to care too little and try too little. “Sometimes people hid behind failure, when they could have prevented it,” wrote Anna Isaac of The Telegraph. So it’s important that you set apart the two kinds of failure—the kind that makes you a loser and the kind that takes you forward. The key is whether you’ve learned something from your mistakes. “Learning is the only process that turns failure into success.” West said The Guardian.” If you don’t learn from your failures, then you’ve really failed.” 12. What does the underlined phrase “screw up” in the second paragraph mean? A. Make a profit. B. Make a mess. C. Make a highlight. D. Make a risk. 13. What messages does the slogan “Fail fast, fail often.” convey? A. The more failure, the better. B. Accept failure, and try new things. C. The more you fail, the less success you achieve. D. Failure is more important than success. 14. Which magazine shows doubt about the culture of failure? A. The New York Times. B. Forbes. C. Wired. D. The Guardian. 15. What’s West’s opinion about failure? A. Failure’s value lies in learning from it. B. If you fail, you are a loser. C. It’s not necessary to try to reduce the risk of failure. D. Failure is the key to put you forward. B 13. B 14. C 15. 根据文章第二段“Instead of showing successes, as museums usually do, the Museum of Failure will display over 60 “failed” products from big-name companies such as Nokia, Apple and Coca-Cola.(与博物馆通常展示成功产品的做法不同,“失败博物馆”将展示60多件来自诺基亚、苹果和可口可乐等知名公司的“失败”产品。)”可推知,划线词所在句子““I really hope you see that these mega-brands that everybody respects, they screw up too,” West told The New York Times.” 根据文章第二段““I hope that makes you feel less nervous about learning something new.”(“我希望这能让你在学习新东西时不那么紧张。”)”和文章第三段“West’s opinion isn’t a new one. Albert Einstein once said, “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” And this idea has been embraced by lots of companies in the US.(韦斯特的观点并不新鲜。 “Fail fast, fail often.” 根据文章第五段“But some people are doubtful of this so-called “culture of failure”. They are worried that if failure becomes a “symbol of honor”, as Wired magazine put it, it may even be seen as “uncool” when someone tries to reduce the risk of failure.(但有些人对这种所谓的“失败文化”表示怀疑。 根据文章最后一段““Learning is the only process that turns failure into success.” West said The Guardian.” If you don’t learn from your failures, then you’ve really failed.”( “学习是从失败走向成功的唯一过程。” 故选A。 Your carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gases that you produce as you live your life. In order to hold the global temperature rise to 2˚C or less everyone needs to average an annual carbon footprint of 1.87 tons by 2050. ____16____ Eat low on the food chain. This means eating mostly fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans. Meat and dairy is responsible for 14.5 percent of man-made global greenhouse gas emissions. ____17____ If you have no meat or dairy every day, you can reduce your carbon footprint by 8 pounds. ____18____ Fashionable, cheap items go out of style quickly and get dumped in landfills where they produce methane (甲烷) as they decompose. Currently, the average American gets rid of about 80 pounds of clothing annually. In addition, most fast fashion comes from Asia, so shipping it to the U.S. requires the use of fossil fuels. Use low energy appliances. Replace traditional light bulbs with LED ones. Though LEDs cost more, they use a quarter of the energy and last up to 25 times longer. Make energy efficiency a primary consideration when choosing a new microwave, air conditioning unit, dishwasher, or refrigerator. ____19____ Choose green travel. An average car produces about five tons of carbon each year. ____20____Take public buses, carpool, or bike to your destination when possible. This not only reduces CO₂ emissions, it also lessens traffic jams. A. Don’t buy fast fashion. B. Never choose quality clothing. C. But people ignore this serious problem. D. Making changes in transport matters much. E. Here are ways to reduce your carbon footprint. F. They are mainly from food production and processing. G. Products with the ENERGY STAR sign have better efficiency. 16. E 17. F 18. A 19. G 20. Suddenly a crow (乌鸦) landed on their window. The father asked his son, “What is this?” The son replied, “It is a crow.” After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this? The son said, “Father, I told you just now. It’s a crow.” After a little while, the father asked his son the same question for the third time, “What is this?” At this time, some expression of anger was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his father. “It’s a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son for the fourth time, “What is this?” This time his son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’? Are you not able to understand this?” A minute later the father went to his room and came back with a diary, which he had kept since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page: Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa when a crow suddenly landed on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I didn’t at all feel angry, but instead felt affection for my innocent son. Paragraph 1: After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears and began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears and began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father. His father would patiently answer the same question all 23 times without feeling irritation while his father asked him the same question just 4 times! The son thought to himself: If I attain old age, how will my son look at me? Will he think of me as a burden? Will he shout at me because of my poor sight, poor hearing or poor understanding? Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father. He made an apology to his father, begging his father to forgive him for his bad behavior. He said aloud, “I promise to make you happy forever, Dad. It is you who have cared for me ever since I was a little child, showering your selfless affection on me. You worked hard to make money so that I could afford to go to university. I will serve you in the best way.” 词汇激活 行为类 ①开始:began/started/initiate ②大喊:shout/yell/bawl/exclaim ③承诺:promise/commit/make a commitment/give one’s word 情绪类 ①热泪盈眶:be filled with tears/cry one’s eyes out/tears well up in one’s eyes ②道歉:made an apology/apologized to sb./said sorry to sb. 【点睛】[高分句型1] His father would patiently answer the same question all 23 times without feeling irritation while his father asked him the same question just 4 times! C They are always concerned with each other. C Three paralysed (瘫痪的) men, who were told they would spend the rest of their lives in a wheelchair, are able to walk again, thanks to an electrical device, which was placed around the men’s spines (脊柱) and boosted signals from their brains to their legs. D For so long, failure has been pictured as something negative, something to be ashamed of and something to be kept a secret. But a Swedish psychologist, Samuel West, has decided to put our worst fears on the table. He is opening a museum -- the Museum of Failure -- in Helsingborg, Sweden, this June. Instead of showing successes, as museums usually do, the Museum of Failure will display over 60 “failed” products from big-name companies such as Nokia, Apple and Coca-Cola. “It’s a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son for the fourth time, “What is this?” This time his son shouted at his father “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
