He could move his head and parts of his fingers but nothing else. He had a servant who cut up his food and placed it on a special mechanically powered fork that he would use to eat. He saw me staring at him and invited me to join him at his table. His name was Stephen. For several hours we sat at that table and we got to know each other on a deeply personal level. I had never known a man who was more radiant(容光焕发), more energizing to talk and get to know than Stephen. Stephen used to be a very successful businessman in Denver. He was in the natural gas business. Thirteen years before, when he was forty, he was waiting for news of a natural gas discovery to occur any moment. He said, “I had so much nervous energy. I saw the storm clouds gathering, and I decided to clean out the gutters(屋檐排水沟) rather than sitting around waiting for this gas well to come in.” He climbed up the ladder to clear the piles of pine needles(松针) on the roof. As he backed up, he accidentally fell off the roof. He landed on his back. He was paralyzed(瘫痪) for the rest of his life, except for his head and his hand. I asked him, “How do you do it all? How do you suddenly stop hiking, fishing, and running marathons?” He said, “There are three things you have to do when something like this happens. The first thing you have to do is adjust. The second thing you do is adjust. And the third thing you do is adjust.” He said, “By adjusting to your abilities, Bill, you have to change your self-expectations. If you can’t be a physical athlete any longer, then perhaps you can be a spiritual athlete.” He was. 4. Why was the author staring at Stephen at the coffee shop? A. Stephen took food specially. B. He accepted himself as he was. C. He talked to himself regularly. D. He gave up being an athlete. 7. “A spiritual athlete” Stephen mentioned in the last paragraph might be ________. A. humorous and energetic B. confident and caring C. optimistic and open-minded D. faithful and easygoing C Sea ice is vital for snow crabs (雪蟹). Usually, as winter’s thick sea ice melts (融化), the meltwater settles on the seafloor, producing a pool with temperatures below 2℃. This cold-water pool not only serves as a shelter for snow crabs, but also allows them to grow well on the eastern Bering Sea shelf, Alaska. But a heat wave in the sea in the region in 2018 and 2019 prevented the usual amount of sea ice from forming, and, according to yearly temperature survey data, the cold pool never appeared and then a large number of crabs died. Cody Szuwalski, a fishery biologist at the U. S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, used computer models to analyze temperature data while creating various environmental conditions in the laboratory to observe the crabs’ responses to changes in water temperature, and look for drivers behind the sudden population drop. Data show the crab population initially exploded in 2018 - reaching a historic high. But the crabs occupied a smaller area than normal for some reason. That means more crabs were crowding onto less space on the shelf. Then came the heat wave. The water temperature probably didn’t kill the crabs directly, as snow crabs in laboratories can survive in waters up to 12℃. Higher water temperatures can speed the cold-blooded crabs’ metabolism (新陈代谢). As a result, the crowded crabs probably needed more calories, but because of the smaller area, they had even fewer resources to sink their claws into. Compared with similar-sized crabs from the previous year, those surveyed in 2018 had lower body weights, evidence that starvation played a role in the missing crabs. Scientists can typically use data from the past to help predict and prepare for changes in the future. But the future increasingly holds events that have never happened on record before - like the snow crab population decline - so they’re harder to prepare for, says Christopher Harley, an ecologist at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, because there hasn’t been enough attention to the secondary effects of heat waves in the sea on cold-blooded creatures, such as higher calorie needs and the risk of starvation. 8. Why is sea ice important to snow crabs? A. It shelters them from harm. B. It makes ideal habitats for them. C. It regulates water temperatures. D. It stabilizes the seafloor for them. 9. How did Cody Szuwalski get his findings? A. By observing snow crabs in the sea. B. By launching field investigations. C. By virtual analysis and lab research. D. By integration of other studies’ data. 10. How did the heat wave affect snow crabs? A. It sped up their reproduction. B. It increased their need for food. C. It narrowed their living places. D. It slowed down their movements. 11. Which can be the best title for the text? A. Global Warming Threatens Ocean Life B. Heat Waves Ruin Snow Crabs’ Last Home C. The Number of Snow Crabs Decreases Fast D. The Mass Death of Snow Crabs Is Explained D If your partner gets down on one knee to propose, or you get a call with the job offer, your reaction might be to shout it from the rooftops. But new research suggests that keeping good news a secret before telling someone else could make people feel more energized. “Decades of research on secrecy suggest it is bad for our well-being. However, this work has only examined keeping secrets that have negative effects for our lives. Is secrecy inherently bad for our well-being or do the negative effects of secrecy tend to originate from keeping negative secrets?” asked lead researcher of the latest research Michael Slepian, PhD, a professor of business at Columbia University. In the experiment, some participants were asked to reflect on the good news they kept secret, while others reflected on good news that was not secret, and then rated how energized the news made them feel and whether they intended to share the news with someone else. The researchers found that the participants who reflected on their positive secrets reported feeling more energized than the participants who thought about their good news that was not secret. The research deepens our understanding of the science of secrets. Negative secrets tend to deplete us and have also been linked to anxiety and depression. Positive secrets, however, seem to have an energizing effect and make people alive. One factor could be that people often have different motivations for keeping good news to themselves. Those with positive secrets were much more likely to keep quiet for internal reasons, not because they felt any outside pressures. “People sometimes go to great lengths to plan revealing a positive secret to make it all the more exciting. This kind of surprise can be intensely enjoyable, but surprise is the most temporary of our emotions,” Slepian said. “Having extra time days, weeks or even longer — to imagine the joyful surprise on another person’s face allows us more time with this exciting moment, even if only in our own minds.” 12. What did Michael Slepian think of the previous research on secrecy? A. One-sided. B. Pointless. C. Convincing. D. Pioneering. 13. In the experiment, some participants were more energized because ______. A. they were free from secrets B. they were optimistic and cheerful C they had shared good news with others D. they had unrevealed positive secrets 14. What does the underlined word “deplete” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Benefit. B. Exhaust. C. Excite. D. Panic. 15. According to the last paragraph, what did Slepian suggest readers do? A. Never reveal a secret casually. B. Let your imagination run. C. Be creative when surprising others. D. Delay sharing a positive secret. 第二节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The iPod Generation Today it is common to see people who walk about with colored wires hanging from their ears wherever they go. I was the fastest runner on my team, and I was supposed to make it into the top fifteen. We had been working towards this race for three years. It was everything to me, and it was everything to my dad. He was a runner and was wild with joy by my success in running. He made it to every race, even flying home early from business trips to see me run. I always listened for his voice, which rang above the crowd-telling me to relax my arms, calling out my time. He pushed me. He cheered for me. He believed in me. We spent countless hours on the sandy canals of Arizona. Breathing in the dust of the desert, the blossoms of the orange trees, and the terrible smell of the dairy farm, we made our way across the city. We pounded miles and miles into our running shoes, marking with every step the path to greatness. It was a journey that was just ours. A dream passed on from one generation to the next. Then the big day came. It was hotter than normal - too hot. My throat felt like a field of cotton, cracked with the summer heat, as I waited for the gun to fire. I gazed out at the crowd; dozens of familiar faces from church and school flickered across my view. They had come for me. They were counting on me. I saw my dad set his watch, worry and excitement etched across his face. With the sound of a gunshot, the race began. For the first two and half miles, I felt great. I had never before been so ready for something. The weeks leading up to the race were filled with hard practices and a strict diet. The scorching sun beat upon my back, blinding me with its brilliance. Nothing was going to stop me, though. 注意: 1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。 However, without warning, my strength was running out. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I whispered, “I’m so sorry I disappointed you, Dad.” ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 芜湖十二中2024-2025第二学期高二期中考试 英语试卷 第一部分:听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项。听完每段对话后,你都有10秒钟的时间来回答有关小题和阅读下一小题。每段对话仅读一遍。 1. We gathered at the school gate and set off at 2 p. m. that day. Half an hour’s walk later, we began to climb the Longquan Mountain standing in the east of the city, covering about eight kilometers in total. To our amazement, none of the students failed to complete the whole journey despite the distance and heat. It was the breathtaking scenery accompanying us along the road that relieved our fatigue. Not only has the activity helped us improve our physical condition, but it has strengthened the friendship among us. All the students consider it meaningful and look forward to such an activity again. 第二节(满分25分) 【47题答案】 【答案】 However, without warning, my strength was running out. My lungs fought to take in enough air, and my feet transformed into cement bricks. Neck and neck with one of my greatest rivals, I could see the finish line. I had begun the final sprint into glory when my knees buckled and my legs gave way. Nothing I could do would make them hold my weight. They were as weak as jelly. Even though I knew my dreams of victory had been destroyed, I had to finish the race. With all of the strength left in me, I got on my hands and knees and crawled, inch by inch, across the finish line. Shame pulsed through my veins as Dad squatted down and pulled me into his arms. I whispered, “I’m so sorry I disappointed you, Dad.” He gave me a gentle smile and said, “You could never disappoint me. Sometimes these things just happen. All that matters is that you did your best.” Lifting my face, I saw my dad’s eyes, in which I saw the sweat, the time, and the work we had put into our dream. The miles we had run together, all for this race, flashed across my mind. “But we worked so hard. What about our dream” I asked. In that second, the world stood still. He reached over for my hand, holding back his own tears, and said, “Don’t you know that you are my dream come true ” 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
