It was a week before I saw Captain Nemo again. Every morning, I noticed fresh air coming into the rooms and I knew that the Nautilus had come to the top. I would go out and see the sunrise.
Then I received a note from Captain Nemo. He invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island. Ned was excited because he thought there he could find a chance to run away. When I saw Captain Nemo the next day, I asked him why he was so interested in Crespo Island. “I thought you preferred the sea.”
“I do,” replied the Captain. “But these forests are under the sea.” During breakfast, he explained, “I have made diving suits that used special air tanks before I sent you the note. These tanks would allow us to stay under the water for ten hours. Wonderful, isn’t it?” He said he had also made lights that worked in electric batteries. When Ned realized that we were not going onto land for our hunting trip, he decided not to come at all.
Conseil and I put on our diving suits, and so did Captain Nemo and one of his men. We stepped into a room and closed the door. The room was filled with water, and another door opened. We went through it, and we were on the sea floor. It was an amazing experience.
We were about ten metres under the water. The light from the sun reached us. Everything looked very colourful. We walked over the fine sand and enjoyed the colours of the shells, fish and seaweed. Conseil and I followed Captain Nemo and his man as they crossed a large grassy area. We were going deeper and deeper.
As we were a hundred metres under the water, we could still see quite well. Captain Nemo stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The “trees” there were giant seaweed, and all their branches were vertical (垂直的). We could not stop looking at them. Fish swam around the branches like birds in a forest. Small bushes grew under the large seaweed trees.
Three hours later, we lay down to rest. I was not hungry, but very sleepy. We all slept, and when we woke up, we explored further.

Passage 5(2023-24·广州白云区期末考)
Benjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six years of age. But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one. In those days, a brush was made from camel’s hair. There were no camels nearby. Benjamin decided that cat hair would work instead. He cut some fur from the family cat to make a brush.
The brush did not last long. Soon Benjamin needed more fur. Before long, the cat began to look ragged (蓬乱). His father said that the cat must be sick. Benjamin was forced to tell his father what he had been doing.
The cat’s situation was about to improve. That year, one of Benjamin’s cousins, Mr. Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed with Benjamin’s drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes. He also sent six engravings (版画) which were drawn by an artist. These were the first pictures and first real paint and brushes Benjamin had ever seen.
In 1747, when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr. Pennington returned for another visit. He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift. He asked Benjamin’s parents if he might take the boy back to Philadelphia for a visit.
In the city, Mr. Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began a land-scape (风景) painting. William Williams, a well-known painter, came to see him work. Williams was im-pressed with Benjamin and gave him two classic books on painting to take home. The books were long and dull. Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said, “Those two books were my companions (伙伴) by day, and under my pillow at night.” While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. The nine-year-old boy decided then that he would be an artist.
33. What is the passage mainly about?

B. Williams’s influence on Benjamin.
C. The beginning of Benjamin’s life as an artist.

Passage 6(2023-24·深圳龙华区期末考)
Zhang Fubai, 70, is a follower of sugar painting-the intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in Tianjin. He received the sweet business from his father, who was also a sugar painter.
“When I was a little boy, the children in the neighborhood would ask my father for sugar paintings.” he said. At 9, he began to copy the flowers and insects his father painted, and would even try to create sugar paintings himself. “I thought it was fun, but I never hoped to become a sugar painter myself.”
In 1966, he finished middle school and became a carpenter (木匠) and part-time tailor (裁缝), and worked on all kinds of drawings. He didn’t make up his mind to join the family business until 1980. In the following years, he would spend days seeing small animals in the fields and rivers. The time he spent on watching these things and years of experience as a carpenter and tailor helped him improve his painting skills.
Zhang is never short of buyers because he has created close to 200 sugar painting styles, and he creates new styles every one or two years. If his buyers ask him for something he doesn’t know, he will search on the Internet and try to design the styles in his head.

Passage 10(2023-24·番禺区期末统考)
Recently, I asked a seeing friend who had just walked in the woods what she had noticed. “Nothing special,” she replied.
How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I who cannot see find hundreds of things to interest me only through touch. If I can get so much pleasure from touch, how much more beauty must be found by sight (视力)? And I have imagined what I should most like to see if I were given the use of my eyes for just three days.
On the first day, I should want to see the people who have made my life worth living and the books which have been read to me. In the afternoon, I should take a walk in the woods and admire the beauties of nature. That night, I should not be able to sleep.
On my second day, I should go to the museums to see man’s progress. I should try to explore the spirit of man through his art. In the evening, I should spend at the movies.
The following day, I should spend in the world of common people going about the business of life. At midnight permanent (永久的) night would close in on me again, and I should realize how much I had left unseen.
I who am blind can give one suggestion to those who see: Use your eyes as if tomorrow you would be blind. The same is true of other senses. Hear the songs of birds, as if you would be deaf tomorrow. Smell the flowers, as if tomorrow you could never smell again…But of all the senses, I’m sure that sight must be the most pleasant.

Passage 2

Li Hua from Huadu was once having his holiday in Italy, but he could not speak Italian. One day he went to a restaurant and sat down at a table. When the waiter came, Li Hua opened his mouth, put his fingers in it and took them out again. In this way he wanted to say “Bring me something to eat”. The waiter soon brought him a cup of tea. Li Hua shook his head and the waiter understood that he didn’t want tea. So he took it away and brought him a glass of milk. Li Hua shook his head again. He was very hungry then and looked sad. He was just going to leave the restaurant when another man came in. When this man saw the waiter, he put his hands on his stomach. In a few minutes, there was a large plate of bread and meat on the table in front of him.
Li Hua saw how the other person easily showed he was hungry by touching his stomach, and then got a big meal quickly. Li Hua thought this was a good idea. So he pointed to the other man’s food and smiled at the waiter. The waiter understood and soon gave him a similar meal. Li Hua deeply knew how important it is to communicate without words. Even though he couldn’t speak Italian, he still could tell people what he wanted by using gestures.
