Zhang Lin is a Junior 3 student in Shijiazhuang, Hebei. Earlier this month, Zhang and his classmates stood on the street with a box asking people for donations(捐款). Later they gave the money they got to the poor students in their school.
Many Chinese students raise money to help people in need. Most of the time, they hold a box and ask for donations on the street or in the park. Or they sell things like old books and CDs. Those students have done a great job so far. The money helps the students in poor areas like Yunnan and Gansu with new clothes, pens and pencils.
Teenagers in the US make donations, too. But they raise money in a different way—they raise money by doing something for others. For example, they sell homemade food or play musical concerts in their neighborhood to raise money.
“Chinese students like to wait for people to donate, or sell things that they buy with their parents’ money,” says Guo Daoshun, an expert(专家).“While US kids get donations and give people something useful in return.”
He says Chinese teenagers should learn to raise money in the US kids’ ways. “That way, they can show their talents and practice communication. More importantly, they can learn every coin counts(有价值). They have to work hard to get a donation.”

For only 20 yuan, Fang Wenjing could buy her lunch at a community canteen (社区食堂) in Hangzhou. She had a meat dish, a vegetable dish and a bowl of rice—all very healthy. “The dishes have a home-cooked taste.” said Fang.
Community canteens have become more and more popular in China recently. They were made for the old people at first. It can be difficult for some old people to cook on their own, so the canteens offer help. They can have lunch and dinner within a 10-minute walk, or community workers can bring the dishes to them. Zhang Suxia, a worker at a community canteen in Hangzhou, said that the cooks made special meals for the old. The food is soft and has less oil.
Now, the community canteens are bringing in more young people. For those who don’t want to order takeout meals or eat at restaurants, they can have healthier and cheaper dishes in the canteens.
This also encourages community canteens to think of creative ways to serve food and make things easier for people. A canteen in Beijing’s Lugu Community brings out buffet-style (自助模式) dishes. The dishes are sold at 2.48 yuan per 100 grams. The price is lower than those of restaurants close by.
There wouldn’t be so many community canteens without the work of local governments. They give subsidies (补贴) for building the canteens as well as the dining cost of the old people. There are now more than 6,700 community canteens in China, according to Tianyancha.
1.Who were the community canteens first built for? (不超过3词)
2.What is special about the food for the old according to Zhang Suxia? (不超过8词)
3.Why do more and more young people turn to the community canteens? (不超过12词)
4.How much should you pay if you buy 500 grams food in a canteen in Beijing’s Lugu Community? (不超过2词)

Have you ever imagined traveling to space as easily as taking a vacation? With the development of the technology, scientists believe that space travel might become a part of our lives sooner than we think.
Right now, only astronauts and a few very rich people can go to space. But companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin are working hard to make space travel cheaper and safer. Some experts predict that by 2050, common people might visit the Moon, Mars, or even stay in space hotels!
What could future space travel look like?
Space Hotels: Imagine floating in zero gravity (引力) while watching Earth from a window! Orbital hotels could offer special experiences like spacewalks or growing plants in space.
Moon Bases: Scientists plan to build research stations on the Moon. These bases might become stepping stones (垫脚石) for deeper space exploration.
Mars Colonies: Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, dreams of building a city on Mars. But living there need to solve challenges like radiation (辐射), extreme cold, and lack of air.
Is it good for everyone?
While space travel sounds exciting, there are some different ideas. Some people worry about:
-Environmental problem: Rocket launches produce pollution.
-Cost: Will only the rich enjoy space vacations?
-Safety: Space is full of dangers like radiation and debris (碎片).
What do YOU think? Will space travel become as common as airplane trips? Or should we focus more on solving Earth’s problems first?
1.According to some experts, what might common people be able to do by 2050?
2.How many kinds of future space travel are mentioned in the passage?
3.What is the advantage of the Moon Bases for humans?
4.What are the problems about future space travel according to the passage?
5.Do you think space travel will be helpful for us? Why?

There are around 11, 200 charity shops in the UK. You can find quite a few of them on every high street. They are selling mainly second-hand donated goods (商品) to raise money for their parent charities.
Charity shops are a good idea. Every year, charity shops raise more than £295 million. The money goes to help medical research and environmental protection, support sick and poor children, the homeless, mentally and physically disabled people, and many others. Selling second-hand goods prevents them going to landfill (垃圾填埋场). That’s good for the environment. Besides, they provide people chances to work as volunteers. Volunteers in shops can make new friends and learn new skills as they get work experience.
People support charity shops in three ways. Four out of five people have donated to a charity shop. Around two out of three people have bought from a charity shop. And there are about 130, 000 volunteers working in charity shops.

2.Why are charity shops set up?
3.Who is part of the money used to help? (举三个例子)

①Journey to the West was “hot” again last year. The Chinese video game Black Myth: Wukong made the classic story Journey to the West popular around the world in 2024. In fact, people around the world have loved the story of the monkey Sun Wukong (Monkey King) for a long time.
②British sinologist (汉学家) Arthur Waley brought the story to many English people in the 1940s. Later, Japan showed Sun Wukong to the world through a TV show Saiyuki in the 1970 and 80s. And many more works followed.
③But what makes this story so popular around the world? People everywhere can understand Sun Wukong, who breaks the rules of Heaven and tries to get free from the hand of the great Buddha (佛). As the writer Li Tianfei told China Daily, the experience of Sun Wukong and his friends is more than a Chinese classical story. “At its heart, Journey to the West is about growing up and being free,” Li said.
④Sun Wukong’s journey is a lot like the stories of heroes in Western cultures, such as Spiderman from Western classical stories. These stories show heroes who might make mistakes but become better over time, just like today’s superheroes. What’s more, before Superheroes appeared, Sun Wukong knew that people with power should help others.
⑤Sun Wukong’s story never gets old because everyone can understand it. His story shows us about being brave and doing the right things—things all people understand and love to see. This is why people all over the world like to create new stories about Sun Wukong. Now, through games, books and TV, young people still love the Monkey King. After all, everyone loves a hero who isn’t afraid to fight for what’s right!

I’d like to share a little story with you about something that happened when I was four. I remember it clearly. Our loving family dog was nearing the end of his life. My father picked him up and put him in a little bed we had made for him. Our dog, my friend, whom we had cared for, bit (咬) my father when he tried to help him. How could he? Why? I couldn’t understand it. I didn’t like him anymore.
I hadn’t thought about that story for a long time, but something that happened last week brought it back to me. I went to visit a friend of mine. When I knocked on the door, I met an angry look and a few unkind words. When the door was slammed (砰地关上), I stood there shocked, and suddenly, I was reminded of my dog. The same feeling of hurt brought that story back.
Both stories taught me something the next day. When I got up in the morning and was told my dog had died, it became clear to me that he must have been in great pain. Much the same for the other story when I learned that my friend had just lost his job the day before.
We are all living in our environments, our opinions and feelings. And all of those things can cause you to say and do things that can’t be understood by those who are not in the same situation with you.
If you meet someone either behaving out of character or acting in a way that doesn’t seem to fit the situation, put out your hand and be patient. Maybe he or she was in great trouble at that time. You may turn around a story that has a sad ending simply by your actions.
1.How old was the writer when his pet dog was nearing the end of his life?
2.What made the writer bring back the story of about 20 years ago?
3.Why did the writer’s friend say unkind words?
4.What does the writer tell us?

Do you have exam stress (压力)? Exam time is the most stressful time of the year. You have worked all school term and now it’s time to prove what you have learned. In fact, it’s common for most of us to have exam stress. A little bit of stress can be a good thing. If we have proper (适当的) stress, we can think actively and work harder. Besides, it can help us to focus (集中) on the preparation of exams. However, if we can’t deal with stress well, we may make things worse.
When I was in school, I used to get very stressed because of my exams. So did my friends. Some of them stopped eating and others ate too much! Some gave up and others burned themselves out! But the most important thing to remember while studying is not to feel frightened! Stay calm, eat healthily and get a rest. Pushing yourself too hard is just as dangerous as not studying enough. A tired and overworked brain is just as useless as a lazy and empty one!
So, what should you do? Set a time each day for study and a time for relaxation. You may have less time to relax than usual, but you still need to let your brain rest for a few moments. If you are tired, information will not stick in your memory. Finally, eat healthy foods for enough energy.
It is bad for you to think too much about your exams. Some students may think that the rest of their life depends on exams. That’s not true. Instead, just regard the exams as another difficulty you will overcome (克服). You have overcome all kinds of difficulties in your life so far. With the right amount of work and focus, you will pass your exams with flying colors!
1.When is the most stressful time of the year for the students?
2.What is the most important thing to remember while studying?
3.Why should we get enough sleep during exam time?
4.What do you think of exam stress? What should students do to deal with exam stress? (Give at least two points.)

This month in Travellers’ Corner there are three teenagers’ experiences in year-abroad programmes.
Mariko Okada (from Tokyo)
My year abroad in the United States was a fantastic (奇妙的) experience. I’m not a shy person, and was very comfortable while speaking to everyone, so I got lots of speaking practice. I also learned lots of interesting things about American culture. When I got home, my friends all said that I had improved so much! I hope to go back again in the future.
Carla Fonseca (from Rio de Janeiro)
I spent last year studying English in London. I’m from a small town and London is a very big city. Sometimes I felt it was too big. There were so many people to talk to, but I always felt bad about my English. I missed my family and I really missed my two cats. My roommate was always using our telephone, so I hardly had the chance for a nice long talk with my parents. I think that it was a good experience for me, but I’m glad to be home!
Alvin Chen (from Hong Kong)
Studying in New Zealand was a fun experience for me, but it was also lots of hard work! I had English classes six hours a day, five days a week — with lots of homework. I also kept a diary of my experience. I like to write and I wrote two or three pages in my diary every day. On Saturdays, my home-stay family took me to lots of interesting places and showed me so many wonderful things about the local culture. I’m really glad that I went!

2.Why did Mariko Okada get much speaking practice?
3.Who didn’t really enjoy the stay in a foreign country very much?

What type of book do you like? I prefer the book about Chinese culture. Here is an excerpt (选段).
The dragon is a great animal in Chinese culture. It brings the wind and rain. It is said that every year on the second day of the second lunar (阴历的) month, the dragon wakes up from its winter sleep and raises its head. Because of this, the day is called “Dragon Head-raising Day” (Longtaitou). This year, it falls on February21.
Old people believed that after Longtaitou, there would be more rain. And rain is very important to farming. So they thought Longtaitou was the start of spring and farming.
People have many ways to celebrate the Longtaitou festival. The most popular one is to have a haircut. Many believe that a haircut during the first lunar month may bring bad luck to your uncles—mainly your mother’s brothers. They hope getting a haircut on Longtaitou gets rid of (摆脱) bad luck.
Among Chinese people’s festival traditions, there is always a place for food. During the Longtaitou festival, people eat food named after dragons. Noodles are called dragon’s beard (longxu). Dumplings are dragon’s ears (long’er). And spring rolls are dragon’s scales (longlin).
People also hold activities like dragon dancing on the day. In some places in Shandong province, people make dragon lanterns too. Small reed (芦苇) boats go down the rivers and carry the lanterns, which stand for people’s best wishes and good luck.

One day they were resting under a tree. The fox said, “If a dangerous animal wants to kill us, what can we do?” The cat said he only knew one way. The fox laughed at once, “Just one way! I know a thousand ways. I can understand it is hard for you to learn more ways, because you are not clever enough.”
The cat felt upset and said, “I have been using the same way till now to help me out of danger.”
Suddenly, a lion ran towards them. Both the cat and the fox got scared and knew if they didn’t find a way to escape (逃离), it would kill them right there. The cat climbed on a tree quickly. Feeling joy is good for you and not just because you feel happy in the moment. You can save it up and use it again.
A joy journal is a special place for you to record anything and everything that brings you joy—what you like, what and who you appreciate (欣赏), what makes you laugh and feel happy. It’s your journal, so you can include whatever you like in it. Taking time to record what’s giving you joy helps you focus on that experience and draw even more happiness from it.
Chartered psychologist (心理学家) Reading says your joy journal can help you remember happier times when you’re feeling a bit sad, lonely or worried. “Turning the pages can help those same feelings of joy flood back, helping you feel better. It can remind you that this moment will pass and joy will come again soon.” Reading also explains, “By recording your joyful moments you can return to them whenever you need a little encouragement and relive them in the future.”
“I like drawing so I would draw pictures of me and my friends in my journal because they make me happy. I’d stick in my favourite chocolate wrappers. My dad tells funny jokes so I could write the best ones in my journal too. I always record what makes us all happy and share them with my families too.”—Tanesha, aged 9.

I was an eighth-grader without ever really learning how to read. I had no confidence and was afraid of being laughed at. Hopefully, an amazing teacher appeared.
After asking me to read aloud in class. Ms. Powell noticed my nervousness. She quickly let another student do the task and asked me if she could take me to the nurse’s office, saying that I looked a little pale. Even though I was not sick, I followed her.
Ms. Powell never knew reading was a challenge for her husband until two weeks before he passed away. She promised to teach him but he told her, “Teach someone who really needs you.” She looked for that person for some time.
Then she asked a little girl to read and discovered her problem. That girl was me. Meeting me in the hallway, she said, “I’m here to help solve your problem.” Shamefully, I told her I couldn’t read. “There is no need to feel sorry,” she said. She promised me that efforts could solve my problem. Over the course of the next year, Ms. Powell spent her spare time teaching me. It was difficult, but through many tears, I could finally read.

When we talk about idols (偶像), we often think of beautiful girls and cool boys with nice clothes. They stand on the stage. But a new program, Become a Farmer, lets us see idols with fresh eyes. The program is about the stories of 10 young idols farming in Hangzhou.

This kind of program was new in China, so it became popular quickly. At the same time, the idols always tried their best to do everything. They also improved the living conditions by themselves. They sometimes made some mistakes, but their courage deeply touched many people’s hearts. And their stories told us that our hard work would pay off (回报) at last.
What’s more, the program gives more people a chance to learn about the life in villages today. The local people still take their land and farm work seriously. They follow the laws (规则) of nature to do their farm work. At the same time, they make use of technology to improve their work.

People love their cell phones. They use them anywhere and everywhere. They talk in the car or on the bus. They talk in the shop or at the mall. They even talk on their cell phones when watching films.
The growing use of cell phones has also created a growing culture of rude behaviour. People are becoming so used to seeing and hearing cell phones, that some have forgotten proper cell phone etiquette. Yes, there are some dos and don’ts of cell phone use.
One of the worst habits of cell phone users is “cell yell”, or loud conversations in public places. Cell phone users need to respect the personal space of those around them. Loud, long rings are annoying. One should turn down your phone ringer (电话铃声) or better yet, turn it to vibrate (震动).
Remember, if the lights are off, your cell phone should be off too. It is rude to leave your cell phone ringer on in the cinema. It’s even ruder if you answer your phone and talk when watching the film. The same is true for concerts, plays, musicals and lectures. If the spotlight is not on you, you shouldn’t be talking.
Respect the rules of those places that request no cell phone use on their sites. When you make or receive calls, electromagnetic waves (电磁波) are sent through the air. Hospitals and airplanes have many electronic devices (仪器). When electromagnetic waves try to go through them, they sometimes stop working. A heart monitor could fail to work properly. A plane could crash.
The next time you turn on your beloved cell phone, think of those around you. Help create a kinder world, not a ruder one.
1.What is “cell yell”?
2.What does the underlined word “etiquette” mean?
3.How are cell phone calls carried through the air?
4.Why should cell phones not be used on airplanes?
5.What are some good manners of cell phone use?(举两个例子)

There were so many people to talk to, but I always felt bad about my English. I missed my family and I really missed my two cats. My roommate was always using our telephone, so I hardly had the chance for a nice long talk with my parents. I think that it was a good experience for me, but I’m glad to be home!

It is said that every year on the second day of the second lunar (阴历的) month, the dragon wakes up from its winter sleep and raises its head.
