My mother called and said that dad fell and broke his arm while herding sheep on the mountain. An hour later, I hurried to the hospital and saw dad who was still under anesthesia (麻醉) after the surgery.
“Your dad didn’t want me to tell you this before he went into the operating room, afraid that you would worry, but I couldn’t hold it in... When your dad wakes up, you should avoid him. Go out and make a casual phone call...”
I nodded, but at the same time, I saw several people in the same ward whispering to each other.
After a while, dad seemed to be waking up, so I quickly left the ward.
About ten minutes later, I dialed dad’s phone.
“Dad, what are you doing?” I asked, suppressing my choked voice.
“Ah...” Dad’s voice was a bit slow, “Playing cards with your uncles...” Dad’s voice became lively as he said this.
“Did you win or lose?” I asked
“Ah... I lost. You fellow, why did you call me when my luck was bad?” Dad joked with me, trying his best to make me feel that everything was normal with him.
“I don’t believe you.” I don’t know why, but I just went along with dad and kept asking questions like a child. But then I regretted it. How could dad prove it to me when he was in the hospital ward?
“Lao Gu, it’s your turn to play...” I recognized the voice of one of dad’s fellow patients in the ward. Dad hesitated for a moment, then shouted to me, “I can’t talk to you now. Jordan had his eye on a scoring record as he stood in the doorway of the old gym, ready for the championship game of the city’s youth basketball league. It was a special anniversary (纪念日), marking 50 years since the league’s first title game.
Jordan’s father had played in that game when he was young, and Jordan was determined to make history himself. As he warmed up with his team, the Badgers, he couldn’t help but feel the weight of the moment.
The game was intense, with both teams giving their all. The Lions took the lead by halftime, but Jordan’s confidence never wavered. He scored multiple baskets in the second half, including a game-tying shot late in the fourth quarter.
With the score tied in the final seconds, Jordan knew he had to make a play. As the Lions held the ball for the last shot, Jordan succeeded in blocking their attempt, giving his team a chance to win.
With eleven seconds left on the clock, Jordan dribbled (带球) up the court, looking for an opportunity to score. “Four... three... two.”
His dad, in the stands, signaled for him to take the shot. Jordan rose to shoot. As the Lions rushed toward him, he bounced the ball in to his teammate Devin — wide open near the basket.
Devin turned and shot. The ball fell cleanly through the hoop for the winning points.

It was the day before Thanksgiving and Kaleb Benham was wandering around outside his home in Noring California. His 90-pound pit bull (斗牛犬), Buddy, was playing around nearby, doing what dogs do: getting into trouble. And this time, Buddy was getting into a whole lot of trouble.
The unmistakable sound that no one wants to hear alone in the woods caught Benham’s attention. It was the deep, strange roar of a black bear. Benham wheeled around to see the beast, which Benham figured weighed around 350 pounds, some 100 feet away. In an instant, the bear fastened on to Buddy’s head and started dragging him away.
Benham, a thin, fit, 24-year-old, took off after them. “Honestly,” he told CBS13, “the only thing I could think of was ‘save my baby’.” He lowered his shoulder and ran quickly towards the bear. But it only seized Buddy tightly. Benham grabbed the bear by the throat. Nothing. He tried getting its mouth open but the jaw was locked tight. Benham resorted to street fighting —punching the bear over and over around its mouth and nose. It worked. The bear dropped the dog and ran off into the woods.
Buddy was in bad shape. His face was bloodied. He had a bite mark clear through his lip and one that barely missed an eye.
“My first thought was that I was going to lose him,” Benham said. He picked up Buddy, put him into his car, and sped off to a nearby veterinarian. Buddy’s surgery took nearly four hours. Benham watched the procedure through a window, waiting for a miracle.
This was the second time Benham had rescued Buddy, says CBS13. The first was from a shelter a few years ago. “If it was your kid, what would you do?” he asked. Nodding toward Buddy, he added, “That’s my kid.”

I was out for my usual morning run through the late-summer heat. Resting under a bridge for a moment of shade, I saw two homeless men standing next to their sleeping bags. One smiled and gently raised his hand as if motioning (做手势) “hello” but didn’t say a word. He wasn’t asking for anything. I smiled and made the same motion back to him.
As I started back on my run, I thought about how much we all wanted connection. In that moment, this homeless man seemed to want to connect more than he wanted food or money.
We have all had experiences of feeling separate and lonely. Feeling separation doesn’t have anything to do with being alone vs. being with people — it is about the human desire to feel connected by being seen and valued by another person.
We all benefit from connection. That homeless man impacted my day. After encountering him, I felt more grateful-appreciating all that I have. He inspired my compassion — I found myself feeling empathy (共鸣) for him. I had the choice to move towards separation or connection. Were there many ways in which he and I are very different? Absolutely! Are there many ways in which we are alike? Absolutely I can reflect on times in my life that like him, I was in a situation I had never expected, times that I felt broke, times that I felt at a low point. And as he may have been feeling this morning, times when I needed someone to stop and acknowledge me.
We always have a choice as to whether we move towards separation or connection. Separation is looking at the homeless person and focusing on how untidy he looks, and criticizing why he has a cup of fine coffee if he is out of money. Connection is acknowledging that he impacted my day by reaching out to me.
28. Why was the homeless man motioning “hello” to the author?
A. He was requesting for money or food.
B. He was expressing a desire for connection.
C. He was showing he was grateful for the author.
D. He was asking for the author’s help.
29. What impact did the encounter bring to the author?
A. He felt greater pity for the poor people.
B. He felt the loneliness in the homeless man.
C. He felt people’s differences with each other.
D. He felt deeper empathy for the homeless man.
30. What does the underlined word “acknowledge” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Criticize and judge. B. Show pity on somebody.
C. Recognize and accept. D. Help somebody out.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Choosing Connection over Separation.
B. The Morning Run’s Benefits for Health.
C. Holding the Power of Emotion Control.
D. A World of Connection and Separation.

As a student growing up in Pakistan, Riffat Arif, now known to all as Sister Zeph, dreamed of a teacher who gives respect and love to children with no difference. She would be that teacher. So, in 1997, at the age of just 13, she founded a school in the courtyard of her home, free to all. Children were to be treated with love and respect; beatings were not allowed.
Her parents were not in a position to help her. So at 13, she learned to do embroidery (刺绣). That was the first income she started generating to support her cause. She wanted children to be pampered and have a good childhood. They are like rose petals (花瓣), and we should treat them like that.
And now, selected from over 7,000 nominations from 130 countries, Sister Zeph has been awarded the largest annual global prize for teachers, the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2023,S1 million. “Her contribution to education has touched countless lives and earned her numerous awards, recognizing her as a true change-maker and advocate for women’s rights and children’s education around the world,” said the official citation.

My wife and I enjoy a well-built home with a large yard. Our electricity comes from a pole in the street, our water from the city water company, and our natural gas from the natural gas supply company. We live in South Texas, the energy center of the world, so what’s there to worry about?
That’s what a lot of folks thought until a devastating winter storm hit Texas. Many people were left without water, power or gas. Temperatures inside even the best-built homes were dangerously low. Fortunately, our electricity and gas stayed on. Even if they hadn’t, we were prepared for the worst. If we had lost our power and gas, we might have been uncomfortable, but we would have made it through thanks to our proactive preparation and my self- sufficient skill set.
My knowledge of getting through that type of situation comes from a lifetime of surviving in difficult environments. I grew up on a farm in rural Arkansas, where my family was almost totally self-sustaining. Later in life, I lived for three years in Fairbanks, Alaska, where living off the grid (电网) was a normal lifestyle and basic survival techniques were a practiced necessity. So, although my wife and I are currently on the grid, I’m familiar with what it takes to live a comfortable lifestyle when the power is cut off.
Perhaps the most important thing you can do to ensure your success living off the grid is to develop an energy-conscious mindset. Living off the grid doesn’t have to be a minimalist lifestyle like the kind I lived on the farm, but some of the same principles hold true, such as doing away with a clothes dryer and planning your wash days around the weather.
4. What does the underlined word “devastating” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Demanding. B. Disastrous. C. Delightful. D. Developing.
5. What would the writer do if he lost electricity and gas?
A. Generate electricity himself. B. Make proactive preparations.
C. Improve self-sufficient skills. D. Lead a relatively normal life.
6. How did the writer know about living through bad situations?
A. By growing up on a farm.
B. By studying from the books.
C. By living a comfortable lifestyle.
D. By learning from his experience.
7. What is the best way to live off the grid?
A. To be aware of saving energy. B. To adopt a minimalist lifestyle.
C. To wash clothes on a rainy day. D. To buy a high-quality clothes dryer.

He and I met a few years back at a local Starbucks where I’ve been a regular customer for many years. Over time we got to know each other and got to be good friends. As I recall, he took the first step in inviting my son and me to a full night of country concerts, free of charge.
Since then, we have become each other’s best friends. He could be described in many ways, but the following, is definitely at the top: “Kindness is making someone smile if only for a moment.”
This is him. And... He does it every single day, without fail.
To be completely honest, I could go on talking about him endlessly. However, since I don’t want this story to be too long, I’m going to finish up here with one last thing.
Back in October 2023, I was going through an exceptionally tough time. He helped me to have an incredibly difficult, deeply personal, embarrassing conversation with my parents; truly, without doubt, the most difficult conversation I’ve ever had to have with them. The following are copies of texts he sent me during that time.
“Try calling your parents and having this talk with them. All will work out and I will help you as well by telling you no or think about it first. I love you. You are my best friend.”
“Hey, bro. It’s embarrassing but at least that can start to heal and everyone moves forward.”
“Getting you on track. You can do this and I will walk with you.”
I truly don’t know where I’d be without his kindness and friendship.

A. “Try ignoring your parents and avoiding the conversation.”
B. “Time will heal and you will put joy on your parents’ face.”
C. “It’s not embarrassing at all, and it doesn’t need to be healed.”
D. “No need to worry. Everything will solve itself without action.”

Ieoh Ming Pei, one of the last great modernist architects, was born in Guangzhou, China in 1917 into a wealthy family. His father was a banker. His artistic mother — a calligrapher and musician — had the greater influence on him. Despite not speaking English, he moved to the US at the age of 18 to study at Pennsylvania, MIT and Harvard. He worked as a research scientist for the US government during World War Two, and went on to work as an architect, founding his own firm in 1955. He carried on working well into old age, creating one of his most famous masterpieces — the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar — in his 80s.
Although Pei worked mostly in the United States, he will always be remembered for a European project: his redevelopment of the Louvre Museum in Paris in the 1980s. Pei was the first foreign architect to work on the Louvre in its long history, and initially his designs were strongly opposed. But in the end, the French — and everyone else — were won over. His glass pyramid outside the Louvre, completed in 1989, is now one of Paris’ most famous landmarks.
He has designed buildings, hotels, schools and other structures across North America, Asia and Europe. His other works include Dallas City Hall and Japan’s Miho Museum. His style was influenced by his love of Islamic (伊斯兰) architecture. His favoured building materials were glass and steel, with a combination of concrete.
He won a variety of awards and prizes for his buildings, including the AIA Gold Medal, the Praemium Imperiale for Architecture. In 1983 Pei was given the fifth Pritzker Architecture Prize for giving the 20th century some of its most beautiful interior spaces and exterior forms. He used his $100,000 prize money to start a scholarship fund for Chinese students to study architecture in America.

LOS ANGELES — There are 69,144 people experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles, the most populous county in the United States, according to the results of the 2022 Homeless Count released by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) on Thursday.
The number marks a 4.1 percent rise from the last count in 2020, said the authority, adding that a count was not conducted in 2021 in the county, home to around 10 million people.
The results of the count, conducted over three nights in February, also showed 41,980 people were experiencing homelessness in the City of Los Angeles, up 1.7 percent from 2020. The City of Los Angeles is the part of Los Angeles County and also the biggest city in the county.
LAHSA said in a news release that this year’s homeless count results offer a clear contrast (差距) to the results between 2018 and 2020, when Los Angeles County saw a 25.9 percent increase and the City of Los Angeles experienced a 32 percent increase. The authority noted that “People in Los Angeles need more affordable homes and economic help to prevent future increases in homelessness.”
LAHSA said the agency and its partners have made 84,000 housing placements (安置) over the past five years. Thanks to a 62 percent increase in shelter beds since 2019, more people are in shelter than ever before, said the agency, adding that “shelter is a necessary and key part of our system because bringing people inside protects them from the destructive effects on their health and safety that comes from experiencing unsheltered homelessness.”
Los Angeles has one of the highest rates of unemployment and homelessness in the United States, according to usabynumbers.com. The envelope lies among the branches of the tree on the balcony. It has been a birthday gift for my husband for 10 years. It all began because my husband Mike hated the commercial aspects of celebrating birthday. Knowing he felt this way, I decided one year to stop buying the usual shirts, sweaters, ties and so on. I reached for something special just for Mike. The inspiration came in an unusual way.
Our son Kevin, who was 12 that year, was wrestling (摔跤) at the junior level at the school he attended. There was once a match against a team called Power, sponsored (赞助) by an inner city charity.
As the match began, I was surprised to see that team members of Power were wrestling without headgear, a kind of light helmet designed to protect a wrestler’s ears. It was a luxury the team obviously couldn’t afford. Well, we ended up beating them. And as each of their boys got up from the ground, he walked around with a kind of street pride that couldn’t acknowledge defeat.
Mike, seated beside me, shook his head sadly, “I wish just one of them could have won,” he said. “They have a lot of potential, but losing like this could take the heart right out of them.” Mike loved kids — all kids. He understood kids in competitive situations, having coached little league football, baseball and basketball. That’s when the idea for his present suddenly occurred.
That afternoon, I went to a local sporting goods store, bought varieties of wrestling headgear and shoes and sent them secretly to the inner city charity. On his birthday, I placed the envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Mike what I had done and that this was his gift from me.

I would treasure every moment on the hockey arena (冰球场). My dream job would be to become a professional hockey player. I grew up playing hockey in local leagues. I was never the star player on the team, but hockey was always something I eagerly expected every day, simply enjoying the game.
It has been seven years since I last played hockey, and I deeply miss the excitement of driving to the arena with my family, scoring a goal, making an important save (扑救), or simply being part of a team.
Being a professional hockey player makes big money. For example, Connor McDavid signed a $100 million deal with the Edmonton Oilers in 2017. But, in fact, very few people like the career only because of this. The majority of people play it because they love the game. For me, it’s not about the money or the fame (名声). If I were in their skates, I’d treasure every second on the ice.
I’d treasure every step on the ice of famous hockey arenas like Madison Square Garden, Bell Centre, Rogers Arena, and Scotiabank Arena. I’d enjoy every moment sharing the ice with future Hall-of-Farmers like Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin, Patrick Kane, and Carey Price.
I’d feel like the luckiest person alive every time I’m reminded that I’m living the dream—a dream many, like me, would give anything to experience. Twenty-three lucky individuals for each team have the honor to tell the world with pride that they play hockey professionally and support their families. I’d devote myself to anything for the chance to be among them. Yes, professional hockey players earn significant salaries, but if given the opportunity, I wouldn’t ask for a single dollar.
24. What can we say about the author concerning hockey?
A. He showed no interest in hockey. B. He started a local hockey team.
C. He was not good at playing hockey. D. He played hockey due to his family.
25. What inspires many people to be hockey players?
A. The money they make. B. Their love for competition.
C. The desire for fame. D. Their interest in the game.
26. Why does the author mention the famous hockey arenas?
A. To highlight his dream. B. To show hockey is popular.
C. To explain his rich experiences. D. To recommend them to hockey lovers.
27. What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. Gaining success helps become an expert. B. We should stay true to what we run after.
C. Nothing is impossible for a willing heart. D. All things are difficult before they are easy.

My mother called and said that dad fell and broke his arm while herding sheep on the mountain. An hour later, I hurried to the hospital and saw dad who was still under anesthesia (麻醉) after the surgery.

“Ah...” Dad’s voice was a bit slow, “Playing cards with your uncles...” Dad’s voice became lively as he said this.

“Yes!” Jordan shouted. The crowd erupted in cheers. After celebrating with his team, he ran off the court and hugged his parents. “You still have the record,” he told his dad. Dad smiled. “You have something more important. A championship. And great teammates. Congratulations!”

【答案】28. B 29. D 30. C 31. A

【答案】4. B 5. D 6. D 7. A

He and I met a few years back at a local Starbucks where I’ve been a regular customer for many years. Over time we got to know each other and got to be good friends. As I recall, he took the first step in inviting my son and me to a full night of country concerts, free of charge.

In person, Pei was always neatly dressed, good-tempered, charming and unusually humble. In 2019, I. M. Pei, known as the last master of modern architecture, passed away at the age of 102.

The website reported in June that the total number of homeless people in the United States is over 553,000, and that’s 170 out of every 100,000 people experiencing homelessness in the country right now.

C. To explain his rich experiences. D. To recommend them to hockey lovers.
27. What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?
