B Dad’s comb(梳子)was jade green. I heard he bought it when he married Mum, which made the comb two years older than I was. Every night, he would smile, hand me the comb and say, “Be a good girl and help Daddy clean it, Ok? ” I was more than happy to do it. At age five this simple task brought me such joy. I would excitedly turn the tap(水龙头)on, then brush the comb with a used toothbrush as hard as I could. Satisfied that I’d done a good job, I would proudly return the comb to Dad. He would smile at me and place the comb on top of his wallet. About two years later, Dad left his sales job and started his own wholesale business. I started primary school. That was when things started to change. He didn’t come home as much as he used to — just a couple of times a week. And when he did come home, it was always late and I’d already be in bed. I started to get mad. I stopped waiting for him to come home, and stopped going downstairs to check on him. Today, I’m no longer a kid. I’ve graduated from college and got a job. Dad’s business has got back on track. Things are better now. Yet the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me persisted. Two days before my birthday last year, Dad came home early. As usual, I helped him carry his bags into his study. When I turned to leave, he said, “Hey, would you like to help me clean my comb?” I looked at him a while, then took the comb and headed to the sink. I passed the clean comb back to Dad. He looked at it and smiled. But this time, I noticed something different. My dad has aged. He has wrinkles next to his eyes when he smiles, yet his smile is still as heartwarming as before. The smile of a father who just wants a good life for his family. Dad carefully placed his comb on top of his wallet. After so many years, he still organizes his personal items in the same careful way. I guess some things never change. And for that, I’m glad. 4. What caused the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me? A. My ignorance of Dad. B. Dad’s absence from the family. C. Generation gap. D. Dad’s failure in business. 5. Which of the following can best describe Dad? A. Humble and realistic. B. Demanding but patient. C. Gentle but strict. D. Hardworking and caring. 6. Why did Dad ask his daughter to clean his comb before her birthday? A. To follow his old habit. B. To praise her helpfulness. C. To give her a lesson. D. To fix their relationship. 7. Which saying concludes the text best? A. Some things never change. B. Like father, like daughter. C. Yesterday once more. D. Let bygones be bygones. C Laurie Santos, the psychology professor behind Yale University’s most popular course, recently started a free six-week class aimed at teenagers, called “The science of Well-Being for Teens”. It was developed to address rising rates of anxiety and depression among teenagers between 9th and 12th grade. She says in Lesson No. 1, one of the course’s pre-recorded lectures: Your brain lies to you about what makes you happy. “For adults, this may mean pursuing money or success at work, and for teens this might mean focusing on the perfect grades and getting into the best colleges,” Santos says. “The problem isn’t that you’re not putting work into feeling better — it’s that you’re doing the wrong things, prioritizing (优先考虑) the wrong behaviours.” Instead of focusing on reaching a financial goal or perfect grade, you should aim to programme your brain with thoughts and behaviours that make you feel better, Santos recommends. Regularly connecting with friends, taking care of your health and learning how to accept negative emotions all contribute more to your happiness than having the right job, car or relationships, she adds in a lecture. This teen-specific course, which already has at least 17, 000 members, is remarkable. More than a third of teens self-report experiencing poor mental health, and nearly half feel constant sadness or hopelessness, according to a Centres for Disease Control and Prevention survey that covered students through mid-2021. Those numbers had already increased by 40% from 2009 to 2019. Santos says she wants to help change those numbers by making the science of happiness accessible. “Happiness isn’t just about enjoying your day-to-day life,” she adds. “It helps you land jobs and live longer, contributing to your success when you’re not really running after it.” 8. Why did Laurie Santos start the class? A. To encourage young children to get a perfect grade. B. To help high schoolers reduce anxiety and depression. C. To assist college students in finding a good job. D. To promote a popular class in Yale University. 9. Which of the following shows Laurie Santos’ opinion? A. Rich people know how to accept negative emotions. B. People today know well how to be happier. C. Today’s people don’t pursue happiness correctly. D. Adults do better in pursuing happiness than teens. 10. What do the numbers Paragraph 4 mainly indicate? A. Teens were unhappier before mid-2021. B. This course gets widely popular now. C. Teenagers’ mental health issues are on the rise. D. Many teens aren’t aware of their mental problems. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. A Free Course about Happiness for Teens B. Anxiety and Depression of Today’s Teens C. The Reason for an Unhappy Life D. The Best Way to Live a Happy Life D What is our purpose? What aims should we pursue to live a rewarding life? There is no more important topic than the meaning of our life. Among many books which help us find the meaning of life, Man’s Search for Meaning is at the top of my list. It was written by Austrian psychiatrist (精神病学家) Viktor Frankl, who lived from 1905 to 1997. Frankl argues that our primary task in life is to provide it with meaning, whatever form this may take. In the deeply moving book, Frankl relates that those who managed to stay in touch with what made their life meaningful in the Nazi extermination camps were more likely to survive. Their personal meaning took many different forms. It could be a strong desire to return to a beloved person, or complete a creative or intellectual project, or simply the strong wish to help others. If there is a powerful “why” that drives us, Frankl declares, we can tolerate almost any “how”. Frankl believes that we can discover the meaning of life in three main areas-by doing a deed or creating a work;by meeting with someone or experiencing something;by the attitude we take towards unavoidable suffering. The meaning of our life can be creativity in the broad sense of the word. This includes not only creative works but also merely making something, learning something, or being productive. Meaning can also be found in the experience of love and the appreciation of beauty, excellence, culture and nature. More importantly, Frankl argues that meaning has to be located outside ourselves. It has to be discovered in the world rather than in our own souls. “Being a human being,” he writes, “always points and is directed to something, or someone, other than oneself-be it a meaning to achieve or another human being to meet.” Frankl’s existentialist (存在主义的) approach, then, invites us to let go of our obsession (迷恋) with ourselves and values such as self-realization, self-improvement, and happiness. Instead, he urges us to focus on the meaning that lies outside the boundaries of our own souls. 12. What does Frankl mean by saying the underlined words? A. We are guided by the purpose of life. B. We are encouraged by many questions. C. We are forced to do something unusual. D. We are urged to find the secret of success. 13. What is the third paragraph mainly about? A. How to define the meaning of life. B. Why the meaning of life is important. C. How to find the meaning of life. D. Why we need the meaning of life. 14. What should we focus on according to Viktor Frankl? A. Finishing an ambitious project. B. Making a difference to others. C. Pursuing great success. D. Struggling for happiness. 15. What is the text? A A news report. B. A short story. C. A diary entry. D. A book review. Do you feel energized when you see red? The moment he arrived at a small town lying along a clear and sweet river a feeling of ease and comfort embraced him. The peaceful night fell, appealing to the young musician. He was casually (随便地) out walking and passing a cottage with the door open, when he heard someone inside playing the piano. Though it didn’t go smoothly, he was sure that it was just one of his compositions. The musician stopped to listen, but the music stopped too. He got closer and overheard a conversation going—“It is too difficult! I can never play it well by myself! I’ve only heard someone else play it several times. It’s far from enough. How I wish I would gain a chance to attend a concert! What if it is played by the musician himself?”—a girl murmured (低语) and sighed. A man continued, “I can’t agree more, but we can’t afford to attend a concert. We are so poor.” “Sorry, Brother,” explained the girl, “Please let it go. I didn’t mean to. I was just kidding.” Though she tried to keep a calm tone, both the brother and the young musician could tell how much she wished to hear a real musician play it properly. The young musician pushed the door and got into the house. With a single candle, a man was making shoes while a young lady was sitting at the piano. Nothing inviting was in sight except the old piano. What was unexpected was that the beautiful young lady was blind. The brother was too astonished to pronounce a word. Kind but embarrassed, he smiled at the stranger. The musician smiled and nodded, approaching the piano slowly. Nervous and frightened, the brother dropped the shoe he was working on, jumped to his feet and rushed to protect his sister. “What are you doing? Keep off my sister!” The young lady was alarmed at the noise. She got off the piano, with head hanging and shoulders shaking. Not until then did the young musician realize he was misunderstood. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ He played so well that all of them were soaked (沉浸) in beautiful music. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 试卷类型:A 高二英语试题 2025. 04 注意事项: 1. 例 :How much is the shirt? But this time I noticed something different. 6. The Best Way to Live a Happy Life 【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. A We are guided by the purpose of life. A. A news report. B. A short story. C. A diary entry. D. A book review. 12. A 13. C 14. B 15. The moment he arrived at a small town lying along a clear and sweet river, a feeling of ease and comfort embraced him. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Not until then did the young musician realized he was misunderstood. He held back his feet and explained politely, “I am a tourist here and I happen to play the piano well. I am familiar with what the young lady was playing just now. Would you mind me playing for you?” Although they didn’t know who the stranger was, they were glad to listen to him play for them. He sat down and began to play. With the music going, the sister and the brother got relaxed and began to enjoy it. He played so well that all of them were soaked (沉浸) in beautiful music. Even when the lone candle in the room went out and the moon sent its lovely beams shining into the room, he still played! When he left, it was deep night. He was so inspired by the appreciation of his music by the young lady and the beauty of the atmosphere in and outside the room. Never had the poor sister and brother had such a splendid night. It was music that brought happiness to them all! 词汇激活 行为类 ①熟悉:be familiar with/familiarize ②开始做某事:begin to do sth./start to do sth. ③欣赏:enjoy/admire 情绪类 ①高兴的:glad/happy ②快乐:happiness/pleasure 【点睛】[高分句型1].
