Live with roommates? Have friends and family around you? Chances are that if you’re looking to live a more sustainable lifestyle, not everyone around you will be ready to jump on that bandwagon.
I experienced this when I started switching to a zero waste lifestyle five years ago, as I was living with my parents, and I continue to experience this with my husband, as he is not completely zero waste like me. I’ve learned a few things along the way though, which I hope you’ll find encouraging if you’re doing your best to figure out how you can make the change in a not-always-supportive household.
Zero waste was a lifestyle movement a few years back. I remember showing my parents a video of Bea Johnson, sharing how cool I thought it would be to buy groceries with jars, and have so little trash! A few days later, I came back with my first jars of zero waste groceries, and my dad commented on how silly it was for me to carry jars everywhere. It came off as a bit discouraging.
Yet as the months of reducing waste continued, I did what I could that was within my own reach. I had my own bedroom, so I worked on removing things I didn’t need. I also offered to cook every so often, so I portioned out a bit of the cupboard for my own zero was te groceries. Perhaps your household won’t entirely make the switch, but you may have some control over your own personal spaces to make the changes you desire.
As you make your lifestyle changes, you may find yourself wanting to speak up for yourself if others comment on what you’re doing, which can turn itself into a whole household debate. If you have individuals who are not on board, your words probably won’t do much and can often leave you feeling more discouraged.
So here is my advice: Lead by action.
4. What does the underlined phrase “jump on that bandwagon” in the first paragraph mean?
A. Join you in what you’re doing. B. Share an apartment with you.
C. Help you to make the decision. D. Transform your way of living.
5. Why did the author show her parents a video of Bea Johnson?
A. She wanted to change her parents.
B. She disagreed with her parents.
C. She was favorable to buy groceries with jars.
D. She tried to explain what zero waste was.
6. What can we infer about the author?
A. She enjoys cooking very much.
B. She tries her best to achieve her goals.
C. She wants to be a responsible housewife.
D. She only cares about her own business.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. How to have your own personal space at home.
B. How to live in harmony with other family members.
C. How to live a zero waste lifestyle in your household.
D. How to persuade others through your own actions.

(乐山市2023-2024学年高二下学期期末)Jennifer Destefano answered a call from a number she did not recognize. “Mom, these bad men have me,” her daughter’s voice told her, crying. A man continued to demand money, or he would drug her daughter and leave her in Mexico. But while she kept him on the phone, friends managed to reach her daughter, only to discover that she was free and well on a skiing trip in Arizona. The voice used on the phone was a fake (冒充品).
In fact, voice cloning has far-reaching influences. A brief sample of a particular individual voice can be used to train an AI model, which can then speak any given text sounding like that person. The feature is to be included in iPhone’s new operating system IOS 17 to help people who may be in danger of losing their voices. ElevenLabs, an AI startup, offers users the chance to create their own clones in minutes. When generating a recording, the system also offers a controller that allows users to choose between variability, a lifelike intonation (语调), and stability, similar to a calm newsreader, both accurate.
With cloning coming, voices claiming to be someone may prove to be fakes. That disturbs financial industry (金融业), which uses voice as an important identification. In journalism, fewer people will trust news based on recordings. The opposite problem will arise when public figures refuse to admit their genuine recordings. Now, ever more people caught up in illegal behaviors will be attracted by the defence, “It wasn’t me.”
Creative industries could face challenges too. Voice actors’ skills, trained over a lifetime, can be taken away in a matter of seconds. The Telegraph recently reported on actors who had mistakenly given up rights to their voices, making it possible to clone them for nothing. But as the old saying goes, a coin has two sides. Val Kilmer, who has lost much of his voice to throat cancer, was delighted to have his voice restored for Top Gun: Maverick. And some others may be spared heading to the studio for retakes.
32. Why does the author talk about Destefano’s experience?
A. To explain why Destefano was cheated. B. To praise a mother’s love for her daughter.
C. To teach people how to recognize fake voices. D. To draw readers’ attention to voice cloning.
33. What can be learned from Paragraph 2?
A. Cloning voices can be variously styled. B. IOS trains people disabled in speaking.
C. Cloning one’s voice is time-consuming. D. AI learns human voice from texts.
34. What impact may voice cloning make?
A. Financial industry will abandon voice identification.
B. Broadcasting will disappear in journalism.
C. Criminals use it as an excuse to escape punishment.
D. Public figures dare not make recordings.
35. What is voice cloning’s influence in creative industries?
A. Disastrous. B. Double edged. C. Beneficial. D. Short-termed.

Dogs named Hero and Tora saved their owner’s life in March. They remained by his side through two cold nights, fought coyotes (土狼), and waited for help.
Their story has won the respect of the world. A charity donation campaign was launched by the victim and the local shelter Taber Lost Paws Society to help the injured dogs.
The story began with an attack. When a passerby named Curtis Dahl was walking his dog in a field of muddy grass near the sugar factory in the town of Taber, an area that is quite remote, not well-traveled, and quite cold in March. Suddenly, Hero came running up and bit his dog around the neck. Dahl claimed he fought with Hero for ten minutes, trying to get him off his dog, and his finger was hurt by the end of it. Calling police and animal services with a complaint, he told them about Hero’s presence, but when the officers arrived and saw Hero lying down there, badly hurt and tired out, they suddenly heard a cry for help.
Arriving, they found a man lying on his back in a ditch (沟渠), trembling and unable to move. He told police he is 61 and lives alone and that he was walking his two dogs Hero and Tora when he fell down. He’d been stuck there for two days and his dogs protected him.
The man said that when he fell down, Tora and Hero stayed with him to keep him safe and warm for some time, and then Tora ran off. “I know she went home to find some help for me, but every time she came back, very sad,” said the man.

根据第一段“Jennifer Destefano answered a call from a number she did not recognize.
根据第二段中“When generating a recording, the system also offers a controller that allows users to choose between variability, a lifelike intonation (语调), and stability, similar to a calm newsreader, both accurate. (当生成录音时,系统还提供了一个控制器,允许用户在可变性(逼真的语调)和稳定性(类似于平静的新闻播音员)之间进行选择,两者都很准确。)”可知,生成的录音可以由用户自己选择可变性和稳定性,由此可知,克隆语音可以有多种风格。故选A项。
根据第三段中“Now, ever more people caught up in illegal behaviors will be attracted by the defence, “It wasn’t me.” (现在,越来越多被卷入非法行为的人会被“不是我”的辩护吸引。)”可知,克隆语音可能导致罪犯用它作为逃避惩罚的借口。故选C项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Creative industries could face challenges too. Voice actors’ skills, trained over a lifetime, can be taken away in a matter of seconds. (创意产业也可能面临挑战。配音演员的技能,经过了一辈子的训练,可以在几秒钟内消失。)”和“But as the old saying goes, a coin has two sides. Val Kilmer, who has lost much of his voice to throat cancer, was delighted to have his voice restored for Top Gun: Maverick. And some others may be spared heading to the studio for retakes.

Tora went back and forth from the site where her owner was and her home several times. By the time Dahl walked by and rescuers arrived, Tora had just gone back again.

The man recalled how Hero and Tora protected him from coyotes. When they stayed by his side to keep him warm, two hungry coyotes emerged. The coyotes eyed them hungrily and slowly walked closer. The dogs sensed the danger immediately. Facing the frightening coyotes that bared their sharp teeth, Hero and Tora didn’t back down. They barked loudly and engaged in a fierce battle, never letting them get close to him. After a tense and intense struggle, the dogs, though badly injured, finally managed to drive the coyotes away, protecting him from being harmed. Meanwhile, what made him moved was what Dahl did.
Knowing what happened, Dahl held no ill feelings toward Hero. Although Hero bit his dog’s neck and injured his finger, he now understood why Hero did so. Hero thought they would harm its owner. Therefore, Dahl chose to forgive Hero. Not only that, as the victim, he also launched a donation campaign with the local animal shelter to take good care of these three injured dogs. In less than 48 hours, they received a donation of $3,000. Dahl said that dogs are loyal friends of humans, and at all times, we humans should protect them and live in harmony with them.
