Jamey Turner often performs to large crowds in Old Town, Alexandria, Turner plays an unusual musical instrument, the glass harp (竖琴). It is made up of different drinking glasses, each filled with water. He makes music by running his fingers over the tops of the glasses. By doing so, each glass makes a different musical sound. Turner is 78 years old, He has been playing the glass harp for 50 years. He became interested in it at the age of six, when he heard his father playing with a glass of water at the dinner table.
Today Turner puts together his instrument by placing 60 different glasses on a wooden soundboard. He holds the glasses in place with rubber bands (橡皮图) which keep them from breaking. He then adds different amounts of water to each one to create different musical notes. Adding or taking away just a little water will change the sound. Adding water to a glass will make a lower sound. The smaller glasses of water produce a higher sound, while the larger ones produce a lower, deeper sound.
Turner uses low-priced glasses because they sound better than costly crystal (水晶). Before buying new glasses, he will test them in stores by rubbing his finger over the tops of them.
The glass harp gained popularity about 300 years ago. The composers like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote music for the instrument, There have been about 400 musical compositions written just for the glass harp. But Turner plays all kinds of music, even popular music from China.

Long believed to have little social structure, giraffes actually are socially complex, University of Bristol scientists suggest. Their social organization is comparable to that of elephants, dolphins and whales.
Lead author Zoe Miller started research work on giraffes in 2005. “I had noticed that giraffe population numbers were decreasing, and I realized that the tallest of all land animals had hardly had any scientific work done on them, which I just found unbelievable. I decided to devote my career to understanding this species better,” said Muller.
Muller and her team looked at research work done in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Researchers then considered giraffes very unsociable and that they formed no long-lasting relationships. “However, this was not what I saw in Africa, and I started to question why they were described as having ‘little or no social structure’ when I could clearly observe them always together,” Muller said.
Muller was based in Kenya for five years, conducting research on giraffes and their social organization. She and her team found that giraffes are actually a highly complex social species that may live in matriarchal (母系的) social systems and include shared care of their young.
“Giraffes may take part in shared parenting of the young, and remain in groups of related females. These types of social organization are well-known in other species, for example elephants and whales, but nobody has ever before suggested that the same could be true for giraffes,” Muller said.
The grandmother giraffes stay in their family groups, passing on survival benefits in tough times to the younger members of the group. For example, they may know where there is water or where they can find food. “This is important information, as this means we should focus on protecting the older adult females, since they are important members to aid the survival of younger generations,” explained Muller.
8. What did Zoe Muller think of researchers’ work done in the 1950s-1970s?
A. Questionable. B. Inspiring. C. Reliable. D. Creative.
9. In what way are giraffes similar to elephants according to the text?
A. Their population numbers are dropping.
B. They remain in groups of related males.
C. They have been well protected in the wild.
D. They take part in shared raising of the young.
10. Why are older female giraffes particularly worthy of protection?
A. They can help keep the balance of nature.
B. They can help researchers learn about giraffes.
C. They can pass on life skills to the younger generations.
D. They can help younger giraffes get on well with each other.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Secrets of Giraffes: The Older, The Smarter
B. Social Structure: A Gap in Animal Research
C. Giraffes: More Socially Complex than Imagined
D. Survival of Giraffes: The Role of Older Members

Urban green spaces, such as parks, gardens, and tree-lined streets, have long been recognized for their aesthetic (审美的) and environmental benefits. However, recent research highlights their significant impact on mental health, particularly in densely (密集地) populated cities. A study conducted by researchers at the University of Cambridge analyzed data from over 10,000 urban residents across 15 cities worldwide, revealing a strong correlation between access to green spaces and improved mental well-being.
The study found that individuals living within 500 meters of a green space reported lower levels of stress, anxiety, and depression compared to those without such access. Researchers attribute (归因于) this to several factors. First, green spaces provide opportunities for physical activity, such as walking, jogging, or cycling, which are known to reduce stress hormones and boost mood. Second, exposure to nature has a calming effect on the brain, reducing mental fatigue (精神疲劳) and improving concentration. Third, green spaces foster social interactions, creating a sense of community and belonging that can alleviate feelings of loneliness.
Interestingly, the study also revealed that the quality of green spaces matters more than their size. Well-maintained parks with diverse vegetation, seating areas, and recreational facilities had a greater positive impact than larger but poorly maintained areas. This suggests that urban planners should prioritize the design and upkeep of green spaces to maximize their mental health benefits.
Despite these findings, the study also identified challenges. In many cities, green spaces are unevenly distributed, with wealthier neighborhoods having better access than low-income areas. This inequality highlights the need for policies that ensure equitable (公平合理的) access to green spaces for all residents.
The researchers recommend several strategies to address these issues. These include increasing investment in urban green infrastructure, integrating green spaces into urban planning, and promoting community involvement in maintaining local parks. By prioritizing green spaces, cities can not only enhance mental health but also address broader environmental challenges, such as air pollution and climate change.
12. What did the study find about individuals living near green spaces?
A. They had higher levels of stress. B. They preferred indoor activities.
C. They were less physically active. D. They enhanced mental health.
13. What does the underlined word “alleviate” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Reduce. B. Increase. C. Ignore. D. Create.
14. How is the text mainly developed?
A. By narrating personal experiences. B. By criticizing urban planning policies.
C. By comparing different types of green spaces. D. By presenting research findings and their effects.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Designing Effective Urban Green Spaces
B. The Multifaceted Benefits of Urban Green Spaces
C. Green Spaces: A Key to Enhancing Mental Health
D. Strategies for Equitable Access to Urban Nature

“Tiki!” I yelled loudly.
Our little white dog, Tiki, had slipped out the door earlier that evening while I was carrying groceries into the house. Now I was searching the neighborhood trying to find him. My seven-year-old son, Jordan, and my three-year-old daughter, Julia, were with me.
The last few months had been difficult. After getting divorced, I could no longer afford our house in Indianapolis. The kids and I moved in with my parents in northern Indiana,150 miles away from the city. Change was easier for Julia at her age, but Jordan missed his friends and his old school. Losing his childhood dog was the last thing he needed.
We called out Tiki’s name and knocked on neighbors’ doors until it was too dark to see. We were forced to return home empty-handed.
“Mom, it’s all new here. What if Tiki can’t find Grandma’s house?” asked Jordan.
“It’s okay, baby,” I said, “He’s wearing his collar and dog tags, so if someone finds him, they’ll call me, and we’ll get him back.” It was at that moment that I realized with horror that Tiki’s tags listed our address and phone number in Indianapolis. If someone found him, they’d have no way to reach me. I felt sick to my stomach.
The kids were heartbroken, especially Jordan. When his teacher asked the kids to write about their wishes, Jordan wrote, “I wish my dog would come home.” and the papers were hung in the hallway.
Coincidentally, when the school custodian (管理员) was mopping the hallway, he spotted Jordan’s paper and thought of the dog his grown daughter had found two weeks before. When he asked his daughter about the lost dog, she said that the dog had Indianapolis tags on it and that the number was not available.

Later that week, Jordan went to school in his old T-shirt from his old school back Indianapolis and was seen by the custodian.

The smaller glasses of water produce a higher sound while the larger ones produce a lower, deeper sound.

【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. C

推理判断题。根据第三段“Muller and her team looked at research work done in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Researchers then considered giraffes very unsociable and that they formed no long-lasting relationships. “However, this was not what I saw in Africa, and I started to question why they were described as having ‘little or no social structure’ when I could clearly observe them always together,” Muller said.(穆勒和她的团队研究了20世纪50年代、60年代和70年代的研究工作。研究人员认为长颈鹿非常不爱交际,它们不会形成长期的关系。“然而,这不是我在非洲看到的,我开始质疑为什么他们被描述为‘很少或没有社会结构’,而我可以清楚地看到他们总是在一起,”穆勒说)”可知,佐伊·穆勒质疑研究人员在20世纪50年代至70年代所做的工作。故选A项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段““Giraffes may take part in shared parenting of the young, and remain in groups of related females. These types of social organization are well-known in other species, for example elephants and whales, but nobody has ever before suggested that the same could be true for giraffes,” Muller said.(“长颈鹿可能会参与共同抚养幼崽,并留在有关系的雌性群体中。穆勒说:“这些类型的社会组织在其他物种中是众所周知的,例如大象和鲸鱼,但以前没有人认为长颈鹿也可能如此。”)”可知,长颈鹿和大象的相似处在于它们共同抚养孩子。故选D项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“The grandmother giraffes stay in their family groups, passing on survival benefits in tough times to the younger members of the group. For example, they may know where there is water or where they can find food. “This is important information, as this means we should focus on protecting the older adult females, since they are important members to aid the survival of younger generations,” explained Muller.(雌性长颈鹿会留在自己的家庭中,在艰难时期将生存利益传递给群体中的年轻成员。例如,她们可能知道哪里有水或哪里可以找到食物。穆勒解释说:“这是重要的信息,因为这意味着我们应该把重点放在保护年长的成年雌性上,因为她们是帮助年轻一代生存的重要成员。”)”可知,年长的雌性长颈鹿可以把生活技能传授给年轻一代,所以特别值得保护。故选C项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Long believed to have little social structure, giraffes actually are socially complex, University of Bristol scientists suggest. Their social organization is comparable to that of elephants, dolphins and whales.(布里斯托尔大学的科学家们认为,长颈鹿长期以来被认为没有什么社会结构,实际上它们的社会结构很复杂。它们的社会组织与大象、海豚和鲸鱼相当)”以及纵观全文可知,本文主要讲述了长颈鹿实际上有着复杂的社会结构,所以C项“Giraffes: More Socially Complex than Imagined(长颈鹿:比想象中更复杂的社会)”是本文最好的标题。故选C项。

【36题详解】
考查介词。句意:赵文瑞是一位来自中国的年轻美术老师,他因在黑板上花费三个月时间创作《清明上河图》而受到表扬。be praised for是固定短语,表示“因……而受到表扬”,故填for。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
After getting divorced I could no longer afford our house in Indianapolis.

After contacting the custodian’s daughter, the kids and I piled into the car and rushed over.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Later that week, Jordan went to school in his old T-shirt from his old school back in Indianapolis and was seen by the custodian. He then asked Jordan about his T-shirt. Jordan answered that they had just moved here from Indianapolis. The custodian seemed to understand immediately when he put Jordan’s paper and his old T-shirt together. The next day, the custodian called, telling us that his daughter had found a dog and that he thought it might be ours. He gave us his daughter’s number and address, She lived more than two miles away from my parents’ house.
Paragraph 2:
After contacting the custodian’s daughter, the kids and I piled into the car and rushed over. Two miles might be a long way for Tiki, but a short way for our car. Minutes later, we arrived, and in no time my kids were sitting on the floor in the custodian’s daughter’s kitchen, laughing while Tiki was licking their faces. “Thank you for taking care of him,” I said, “It is really a miracle. This lucky coincidence gave me new hope for our future life.
