It was a busy morning. At around 8:30, an elderly man came to the hospital. I heard him saying to the nurse that he was in a hurry for an appointment (约会) at 9:30. The nurse let him sit in the waiting area, telling him it would be at least 40 minutes before the doctor would be able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch again and again. Then I decided to examine his wound first, since one of my patients didn’t appear at the appointed time.
While taking care of his wound, he told me that he needed to go to the nursing home to have breakfast with his wife. I then asked about his wife’s health condition. He told me that she had been ill for some time and she had a special disease. I asked if she would be angry if he was a bit late. He replied that she didn’t know who he was—she had not been able to recognize him for five years. I was surprised and asked him,“And you still go there every morning, even though she doesn’t know who you are?”
With a big smile, he said, “She doesn’t know me, but I know who she is.” I had to hold back my tears as he left.
Now I realize that true love is accepting everything. The happiest people don’t necessarily have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything they have. Life isn’t about how to live through the storm, but about how to dance in the rain.

Birds are building their nests with rubbish, according to a new study. The rubbish includes cigarette butts (烟头) and plastic bags.
A group of European scientists looked into about 35,000 studies on bird nests. They found that birds used man-made things in nests almost everywhere on Earth except Antarctica.
Some rubbish seems to be helpful. This is why birds “like” putting it in their nests. For example, cigarette butts have some chemicals, so they can keep insects away and protect the chicks (雏鸟). Plastic bags are useful in keeping the animals warm, and other hard things, such as paper cards, can make nests stronger.
However, the rubbish may bring more harm to birds. The toxic (有毒的) chemicals in cigarettes hurt the chicks. The chicks may get sick and have shorter lives because of the toxic chemicals, according to a study.
To make matters worse, if the cigarette is still burning when the bird brings it back to its home, it may set fire to the nest. Pieces of fishing net may trap (缠住) birds, and it’s impossible for them to get out by themselves. If the chicks eat other kinds of rubbish by accident, they will also get hurt. Our friends in the air are experiencing the bad effects of humans’ polluting the environment.
43. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The rubbish. B. The nest.
C. The bird. D. The study.

Two brave girls blew our minds in 2023. Zhen Xin, from Beijing, born in 2007, completed the “Five Great Mountains Challenge” in August, 2023—in only five days. She became the youngest person to do it. The other girl, Xu Zhuoyuan, from Changsha, successfully reached the top of Mount Qomolangma on May 15, 2023, and she has become the youngest Chinese person to reach the top so far. Let’s come to Zhen Xin today!
It takes climbers much energy to climb, and sometimes climbing is dangerous and full of challenges. The “Five Great Mountains Challenge” is about climbing China’s five greatest mountains—Mount Taishan in Shandong, Mount Huashan in Shaanxi, Mount Songshan in Henan, Mount Hengshan in Shanxi, and Mount Hengshan in Hunan—in 100 days.
Because of the hot weather in August, Zhen did most of her hiking at night. “When you can’t see what’s coming next, many of your fears and worries go away, and you’re less likely to back down,” Zhen explained.
Zhen said the key to hiking was one’s mentality (心态). She always looked for something special on her way, for example, a strange tall tree. Then she would remind herself to carry on until she saw the next one. And whenever she felt she was about to give up, she would give herself a prize, such as a drink or some snacks.
Of all the mountains she climbed, Mount Huashan stood out as her favorite because of its steep (陡峭的) roads. She told China Daily, the more dangerous it was, the more concentration (专注力) she would have. However, she thought the most difficult hike was climbing Mount Taishan. It was not for its height, but for the largest tourist rush she met. “We could only move up one step every five minutes or so,” she said.
Zhen decided to climb the five great mountains when she finished middle school. “I wanted something that would allow me to truly see my growth and changes over time. As I grow older, I want something to share with others,” she said.

Tea is a wonderful drink that can make you feel energetic and happy. Many tea drinkers enjoy a condition known as being tea drunk or tea high, which changes how people feel in their body and mind.
In fact, being tea drunk isn’t hazardous like being drunk on alcohol (酒). It’s simply a feeling of being very relaxed and joyful. It’s helpful for people to have fun talking with their friends or just to think by themselves. Many tea drinkers also feel more focused (注意力集中的) when working in a tea drunk state.
To experience the feeling of being tea drunk, you should drink good tea and eat some light snacks, such as biscuits and fruit. Before drinking tea, make sure you don’t eat too much or too little. If you’ve just had a full meal, the tea will not work well on you. On the other hand, if you haven’t eaten anything, it will easily make you feel sick.
Being tea drunk can last from four to six hours. Many tea drinkers will enjoy spending the time with close friends in relaxing environments. A quiet tea house and a comfortable living room are both great places for an enjoyable time.

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said, “I’m blind. Please help.”
There were only two coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and put them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words on it.
He gave the sign back to the boy and everyone who walked by would see the new words. Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people gave money to the blind boy. That afternoon, the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were going.
The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, “Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?”
The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I wrote what you wanted to express, but in a different way.”
What he had written was, “Today is a beautiful day but I cannot see it.”
Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing?
Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply told people to help him by putting some money in the hat.

A. Because of the hot weather.

D. Because of the shortage of money.

A. Young and friendly. B. Talented and creative.

Are you getting interested in being tea drunk? Why not give it a try?

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said, “I’m blind. Please help.”
There were only two coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and put them into the hat. He then took the sign turned it around, and wrote some words on it.
The second sign told people that they were able to enjoy the beauty of the day, but the boy could not enjoy it because he was blind. The first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people they were such lucky people.
